I worked at Emery Dayton hub in the 90's. The Emery plane 17:37 was very likely Flight 002 or 004. There were 2 planes daily DAY to LAX. Inbound was 001 and 003 and outbound 002 and 004. Great memories.
Plane spotting is just not the same today. I remember seeing so many incredible planes as a child in the 90’s. I had a relative who lived near SFO and whenever I’d go visit, I loved sitting outside and watching all the wide bodies take off and pass over. The classic 747’s (100’s and 200’s) were my favorite. After awhile, I could distinguish an aircraft sound alone.
@@auerstadt06so unfortunate, they had to dump before getting a final to Halifax, and they ran out of time, they flew to the very end-crew fought all the way
I'm Italian..I remember my first vacation in L.A. back in 1991..I was 11 y.o...we stayed at the Hilton the first night,I couldn't sleep because of the jet lag..I've spent the whole night watching planes landing at Lax ..it was incredible..
Awesome footage. 30 years ago, incredible. What a great catch as well the brand new American A300-600R in the background when they were painted grey and flew to LAX, ORD and DFW. Had a lot of composites so they couldn't figure out how to put the classic AA chrome finish on them until a couple years after this was recorded. So much variety back in the day. Trijets, Boeing, Douglas' and a handful of Airbuses and other European makes like BAe, Saab etc. The 50s and 60s were more glamorous but the 80s and 90s for me was the peak of interesting jets and variety.
I’m from Houston and we always used to connect in LAX when flying to Asia back in the 90s. Sure IAH was big and had international flights but the feeling of seeing all these wide bodies with their own livery paired with hearing different languages really made it feel like you were going out into the world.
Michael W I miss those days. My grandpa worked for Boeing so he’d always take me to the airport and teach me about planes. I feel bad for the kids now who can’t do that.
There are a couple of spots arround El Dorado where you can plane spot quite well. it's outside of the airport ad the police does patrols, so it's relatively safe
At 16:07, this same United B757, N502UA is departing SFO to BOS... today (August 10, 2019) at 13:10. As of today - this aircraft has been used by United for 29 years and 10+ months. Her first flight was on August 30th, 1989. It was delivered to United on September 14th, 1989. Hat’s off to all of the engineers, mechanics... and pilots that made this possible.
Amazing! It must've taken real dedication to be a planespotter back then pre-internet. And, I agree with other commenters, the planes looked so much more majestic back then. Unfortunately, so was the smog.
Great video man! I visited California in 1994 and flew in/out of LAX. Never seen much airside action. So it's nice to see what was happening back then. It's great seeing all the heavies and then a small prop in amongst them :D
Moy Boone - stayed at my Uncle’s house W90th st (north of LAX), I could lie in bed with the (soundproof) window cracked, and clearly hear the spin up and thrust of most heavies departing towards the ocean from the SOUTH runways! Yes, they got more quiet, but they are still not quiet. I do not care, however, as this is my favorite noise in the world!!!
Usually I would be against talking during the spotting video, but man the commentary and regs was pretty cool! Really enjoyed this video thanks for posting!
Yeah some years ago someone was like 'just shut up already' in a comment. It's not like in the 90s I knew I'd be uploading videos for public consumption twenty years hence.
I was a United Airlines Service Director in the 90’s and spent a lot of time training at LAX and virtually lived at the Sheraton La Reina. I would spend most of my free time plane spotting on Sandpiper Rd. It’s a bummer they shut it down.
How I wish I could have had a camera in these days. I may have been a teen but they thats fine. I love your old spotting videos. And that you mentioned avgeek stuff like tail numbers and liveries. Nice.
All of those DC10 and MD-11 passenger jetliners were a lot more common back then. Now, sadly, they are pretty much about extinct, unfortunately, along with the L-1011. I flew on one North West Airlines DC10 from San Fran to Detroit, and a few times each on a Delta L-1011 (ATL-TPA) and on an MD-11 (R/T ATL-LGW and R/T ATL-NRT). I'm so glad I got the chance to fly on those classic historic jets. I even flew on a Continental Airbus A300 one time from TPA to EWR. I flew on a part of history. It's a shame I missed out and blew my chance on the Boeing 707 and DC 8 though. I dilly dallied around and missed the opportunity.
Fun fact: The Swissair MD-11 at 9:40 has the callsign "HB-IWF" (9:49); Which is the same MD-11 involved in the Swissair 111 incident. It crashed into the atlantic ocean killing all 229 passengers onboard.
That area from 11:50 to 15:00 Sandpiper St. Really miss that spot. Still mad they blocked it off after 9/11. It was amazing for catching arrivals to 6L on those rare days when it happened.
wooooooow what a wonderful movie ! today y can only see 787, 380, T73/ER and A350 and other mordern stuff at LAX but that is classic aviation to it`s best !

3:03... Was the SAS's Boeing 767-300ER (probably) able to fly nonstop between Scandinavia and LAX or required stops at the american airports like EgyptAir used to do with their 767?
The end of the Golden Age. The Swissair MD-11 (HB-IWF) at 9:50 was lost off Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia on 2 September 1998 while operating Swissair 111 from JFK to Geneva.

and I thought Alaska Airlines had Abraham Lincoln on vertical stabilizers... and I never understood what connected him with Alaska, particularly :))
a tip: you can watch series at flixzone. Been using them for watching all kinds of movies lately.
@Jeremias Miguel Definitely, I've been using Flixzone for since november myself =)
@Jeremias Miguel Yup, I have been watching on Flixzone for since november myself :D

NZ needs to bring back a retro livery, that teal and navy blue looked so nice!

27 years ago, damn depressing how fast time flies. Honolulu and LAX my two fav airports.
Back then you go in the terminals and plane watch all day for free. No boarding passes, TSA, and no chicken hawking.
Yep, right up until 911.
Yes and if you were flying they let you say good bye at the gate or Walk in tarmac
When I was a kid I would go to the gates and plane watch. They let me board a delta DC-9 and the pilots showed me the cockpit. I miss those days.
all that's out the window now
Chicken hawking?
9:45 this Swissair MD-11 crash on the atlantic ocean in 1998 with 229 kills :'(

Theres the In N Out spot which gets you REALLY close to the planes. Even closer than where they shot this.

The 757 was ahead of it’s time and Boeing is taking forever on the 797. 757s will probably be in the air for 40 years.
