  • These videos were taken by my father in the 1960s and early 1970s at Los Angeles (LAX) on Kodachrome film. He recently had them converted to a digital format and I am happy to share them now. I have not edited them at all, other than to splice three separate clips together.
I didn’t want to clutter the screen with some descriptions, but here are some interesting facts about a few of the planes that you can clearly see the registrations on:
N93105, the Trans World (TWA) Boeing 747-131 was the 21st 747 built. It was delivered new to TWA on March 7, 1970.
D-ABUE is a Lufthansa Boeing 707-330. Today that registration belongs to a Condor 767.
SE-DBE is the SAS DC-8-60. It was delivered new to SAS on May 3, 1967 and written off in Rome just three years later (April 19, 1970) after a rejected take-off and resulting fire.
N741PA is a Pan Am 747-121 and the 17th 747 produced. It was delivered to Pan Am on February 28, 1970 and served 20 years with the company before being retired and converted to a freighter. It ended up with Polar Air Cargo.
N4719U is a United Airlines 747-122, delivered on June 26, 1971. This was the 145th 747 to be built.
There is also a quick cameo by a Santa Fe train led by four engines as well as a U.S. Air Force C-47 (DC-3).

Our family also went to that exact same observation location to watch the early 747's taxi for take off West bound from the north runways. Yes, that fence was very low. Outstanding viewing location. In 2019, the best place to view the North runways is from In-N -Out Hamburger at Sepulveda Blvd. and West 92nd Street, and the South runways are viewable from Clutter Park on East Imperial Avenue at Sheldon Street, just above Imperial Highway.

What a treasure trove. The old livery's are such a treat to see, especially the TWA globe.
Amazingly, all of the pilots who were flying these planes are ow retired. Assuming this was shot in 1972 and a pilot was hired on at 22, that would make them beyond the mandatory retirement age now.
What really shocked me was the spot where the film was shot, which appeared to be an observation area off of 96th Street in Westchester (the location of LAX). The fence couldn't have been more than four feet high. Now it would be a fifteen foot, solid metal fence with razor wire - if it existed.

Yeah. In the 1970s was before TWA had their familair 1980s red striped livery and all red tails with TWA in big white letters. It was before United had their familiar late 70s and 1980s yellow and orange color with the big UU on their tails. American though had the same livery here as they did throughout the 80s. They were the 3 big ones, TWA, United, and American, the 3 most popular airlines of the 70s and 80s.
Then there's the old airlines that are no longer around, with TWA, one of the big 3 from the 80s, unfortunately being one of them. Pan Am, Eastern, and Braniff are 3 more long dismissed airlines

These videos bring back a memory. I recall I was on an American 747 from LAX to JFK either in 1970 or 1971. I think it was their inaugural flight. I was young and recall a small ribbon cutting ceremony at the gate as we boarded. I was aghast at the size of the aircraft and recall people waving at us at the end of the runway as we lined up on the the north runway, I think. These vidoes brought all that back. Thank you.

The Halcyon days of Air Travel. Please note about 4:00 all the people watching the planes. Most airports, major airports had an Observation Deck looking over the tarmac where anyone could go and watch planes landing and taking off along with waving to friends or family after they boarded their flight. You could even accompany someone on board to say last goodbye and then exit the plane.
    There was ZERO security.
The train is one that went through Beverly Hills, West Hollywood all the way to downtown. They had a 99 year lease and to keep their route had to travel twice a day. Morning and Night. I often encountered it during its night run.
I believe the Prop planes at the end of the video were DC 4 and a DC 3 which was my first flights from NY/ Florida/ NY. The DC 4 flights NY to LA were about 10 1/2 hours non stop. The first transcontinental Jet Boeing 707 NY/ LA was 1960 about 5.5 to 6 hours. A big difference. But we were treated royally back then. People dressed up for the flight. My mother had special outfits just for air travel as did I. There was also plenty of room. No broken knees or suffocating lack of space as now other than First Class. But even that is not a patch on the service of yesteryear.

Having a 747 in the early '70's seemed to be "in fashion", whether the airline needed them or not! Continental put a piano bar in theirs, knowing they couldn't fill them with people.. Braniff bought 2 that they couldn't even afford to finish painting! If you didn't get on the 747 band wagon; your airline didn't "look good" . Kind of like the 'Polo' & 'Izod' shirts for social climbing mentality of the '80's. American Airlines 747 service was completed in 1984. And the DC-10 still in service on American Airlines until 2000. The 747 is better than the DC-10.

I flew on an American Airlines B747 between Los Angeles and JFK in 1978...those were the days..today AA has no B747s

    •  7 лет назад

No 747's in American Airlines, What a shame, the biggest plane American Airlines currently has in their fleet is the Boeing 777-300ER

supercharged V8 Yes but when you fly to Hawaii from mainland US or Coast to Coast in teh US its mostly narrow bodies today like B737-800s or B757...that was a magic feeling to fly a B 747 or DC 10 coast to coast or United s royal Hawaiian service with air hostesses in Hawaiian dress on a 1973 vintage B 747 back in 1982...I don t feel any magic on the B777 or the Airbus A 330..I don t feel that comfortable crossing the Pacific on a two engine airplane..

Your right, flying back then was an experience, now flying is like taking the city bus. I also don't feel comfortable crossing the ocean on a two engine airplane as well, to bad trijets are long gone like the B-727, DC-10 and the Lockheed L-1011, at least three engines is safer then two, right?

supercharged V8 Absolutely especially with 5 hrs of water from California to Hawaii or 11 hrs from Frisco to Tokyo..I have flown a couple of times on the B 777 whose two engines are extremely powerful ..but to fly on a B 737-800 to Hawaii from say Seattle, no thanks..I hate long hauls on narrow body aircafts
