I had a 73 when I was young, pretty much the same car, loved that car. I commend you boys for trying to save it and put it back on the road. Thank ypu.
That's the year that I've been looking for with the Opera windows. I had one when I was a kid for about a week or two would love to have another one we'll have to keep it this time
43:00 If you rotate the distributor the way it rotates, that is delaying the timing. So, in this case the circular arrow points clockwise from the top so to advance it you have to turn it counter clockwise from the top.
I got a 1972 Dodge charger my grandpa's car and he died a couple years ago car has been sitting in the field ever since and recently made my brother went got it back on Road and your video inspired me😊
I just bought a 74 Charger, the plan was to get it running and then fix it as I drove it but I just found out Monday that I'm being transfered by the Company to Hawaii right after Christmas, so now I'm going to more to it atleast at first, because I'm going to ship it over and I'm going to give my 99 Avenger to my niece as her first car when I leave.
The weak spot of the 318 is the timing cover. It is a cast aluminum piece that goes between the block and the water pump. Water passes through all three in two locations. If that corrodes right where it seals to the block or right where it seals to the water pump, you will lose water into the sump of the engine or squirt it on the ground, respectively. So you will want to inspect that area after you take off the water pump, at least the front.
My buddy in Michigan has this exact car.But has this race semi orange? He has the original 400 cubic inch motor in his garage in a cabinet. But he installed a four forty with a sixpack in it. We ended up cutting out a second hood to install the six pack scoop on Easter of 2012. It has been in the Detroit Autorama 6 times taking 2nd place all 6 times. The car was originally silver, but was painted in 96 and is now Race Hemi orange which has more red in the paint than that of regular Hemi Orange. The car was nice enough to be praised by Chip Foose and George Barris so much that George came to his car 3 years in a raw at the Woodward Dreamcruise in Michigan. I am the only person besides him to be able to drive it, and only 1 of 8 people to ever have my hands working on it and doing restoration work to it. This was known as a "Coke Bottle" body. As with my buddy's car this was produced at the "Lynch Rd. ASSEMBLY PLANT, in detroit. It is a slick ride, and looks sweet!

If you have issues with getting this thing to stay running , it is gonna be your starter relay! The one that you want to go with will not be the blue , the black or the orange you specifically want to use the anodyzed metal one! If you are looking to get interior or trim peices for this model you can inter change most of the 71', 72',73' and 74's With the exception of minor things like the tail lights and Louvered opera window inserts. Those came only in the 73' and 74'. The fender marker lights are also different between the 73 and 74 compared to the flush mount 71 and 72. But interior you can use from those 4 years, unless you have bucket seats compared to a split bench seat. But on the other hand parts are very nilly on these 71-74 B body Chargers.
The rear axle on a 400 car in that year is the much desired 8 3/4, which from the rear has a smooth round center section with no bolts showing. The bolts are on the front side near the universal joint. By contrast, the 8 1/4 axle comes on 318 cars. It has a cover held on by bolts and you can see the bolts from the back of the car. Ten bolts I believe.
Small Block Chrysler LA engine. The 318 cubic inch flavor........Find the build sheet under the back seat. Also the metel card on the driver side under the hood. Also the Electronic ignition and bucket seats with the SE trim package is cool.
I am going to guess that it was always a 318 car. 73 and newer B bodies use a different K member for small block vs big block and it would be rather difficult to swap between them. Also, the engine appears to be decorated exactly as a 318 would be in 1973. A 318 used a shorter trans which would need a different driveshaft. What is the 5th digit of the vin? Also, every Mopar guy expects to see a fender tag. The Vin is repeated on the bottom row of the fender tag. Glad you got the trunk open without drilling the lock. This car is easy to access the lock by going into the trunk from the back seat, so no need to drill or pound out a lock. And the pins can be swapped around in the trunk and door locks, or , better yet, a new key created by a locksmith. Locksmiths are pretty rare these days, but you might find a real one on line.
When you block every vacuum port, it is possible to miss the two most obvious ones. The brake booster and the PCV. I had a brake booster go bad and the car would not idle. I could only drive it home by blocking off the port on the intake. The clue was that the brake pedal went hard as a rock. I have never had a pcv go bad, but it does happen. Also, it can be bad with little way of knowing. The cheap ones sold today at the parts stores are more likely to be bad than 50 year old ones from the factory.

The distributor in the back makes it a small block, most likely a 318. I have a 73 DC SE Brougham with the 400. Love the universe out of those Mopars.
Exhaust manifolds looks like a 360.
I had a 73 SE with the 400-2 barrel.B-5 blue with blue interior. It was ok not a power house by any standards. It drove real well though and I loved it.

Don't be discouraged. I drove a 318 26 foot motor home up the Cajon pass (notorious long 6 percent grade) and it pulled great.

Use scrubbing bubbles spray on interior
Dow Scrubbie bubbles will do wonders on that paint as well.
The key thing is most big block engines has a 4 barrel carb.

wait till you find out the hard way it gets 12 mpg .. thats 240 to a tank full that cost you 80 to fill. it like the car will get old..... quickly.
