Travis... I like how you and your dad repurpose things, tear them apart... Old school nohow..your a throw back to when people could use their hands and fix things...loved hiw you drilled out the wiper motor...i would have done the same thing...your dad raised your right.... You guys are a great team.... You dad reminds me of Sam Elliott....great job guys....

Great repair on the floor! This project just amazes me. The paint restoration is truly a work of art. Travis, you and Rick have a connection and comradery that I never had with my Dad. That, my friend, is both a blessing and a treasure for each of you. You guys have my utmost admiration. Your channel is one of the best anywhere, in my opinion.

I'm with you I prefer steelies, every time. Steelies & bias plys. Man I swear in every sharpie there's a timer that starts as soon as you open the package and ends right after the third use. First person camera mode is new, nice! Rick always cracks me up "don't make me come in here and do this...'cause I will!" lol. Truck is a gem, crazy what a little elbow grease can achieve.

Jackpot. I really like how you’re not a “parts changer”. Those original parts are so well made and, it’s so interesting to see how you and your Dad do the refurbishments. I worked as a machinist for 20 years , and I loved refurbishing old car parts and such. Y’all are starting to motivate me.

    • @mtrgv

I concur. The wiper motor not turning was caused by the excessive rust flake build up. You don't know what's wrong with a part till you take it apart and inspect it.

I really would like to see those fender turn signals work. If you remember radio shack they did sell 12 volt miniature bulbs. The bulb was the size of a grain of rice and there were two lead wires attached. I needed some bulbs this size on my heater control on my 05 grand prix. Dealer only sold the whole heater so I wired these in and they have worked well. I'm sure you could find bulbs like those online. Maybe led now. Take them apart and tinker with them. And truck is looking good so far.

My Dad had a 74 king cab in Bronze. He loved that thing and washed and waxed it every weekend. One day he was using the buffer and I was bugging the crap out if him to let me give it a try. He finally let me have a go and I rewarded him by going strait trough the paint on the ridges of the hood. I thought he was gonna strangle me with the cord

Since the truck was built in Michigan and sold to the buyer in California, either the Dodge dealer or the buyer deleted the OEM mirrors and installed (what you have)…which are called “West coast mirrors” they were quite advantageous for towing RV’s or equipment trailers that were slightly wider than the truck.

My OPINION, those '94 up wheels look bad in '73-'93 trucks.
    YOU'RE right about original wheels.
I'd paint the front and rear hubs black.
    Wish I had your forklift!
Love the receiver hitch in the front. GOOD old man mod.

If you move that voltage regulator to the fender well, away from the area where the "bird bath" hoid dumps water on it everytime you open it, it'll last FOREVER.
Mine's 31 years old now on my '91.5 Cummins.
On them the heat from the head cooks them. ANOTHER reason to move it.

It's hard to believe that '73 is 50 years ago. Time flies. A friend of Dad's was a small local Dodge dealer, and in his driveway, he had what I would assume would have been a brand-new 1978 version of that truck. SMH. . . that was 45 years ago.

Since you have that paper tag, I would think keeping the camper top on would be a good idea to keep it original. I hope whoever buys it keeps the top.

Travis, if you can afford to. Get yourself a can of Eastwood Seam Sealer (grey or black). It's Titanium Dioxide & Carbon Black (& a couple packs of acid brushes). This sealer is amazing for filling & covering body welds. Never cracks or shrinks, paintable in 1 hour. With just half the welds & this sealer. You can fill a panel in half the time. VERY versitile product, & a can will last you a very long time/maybe a dozen projects. Worth every penny!

So far I've sealed both Rocker Panels & floor patches on a '92 Nissan D24 Pickup. An inner Fender cut/weld to graft a used front corner & Rad Support on a '91 Toyota P/U. And just sealed my new Gutters, 6 End Caps with Eastwood Seam Sealer. There's still more than half the can left. Fill the air space in the can with Propane Gas to store the product. It'll never skin over or harden, (this works for Brake Fluid too! No air inside. No spoiled Fluid!).

When I started working for a Chrysler/Jeep/AMC Dealer back in '79 when I got out of the Army, we could rarely send an Alternator, starter motor, and a few other choice pieces back to Chrysler without tearing apart first and try and repair them! By the 1080's, that was too expensive and labor cost more than time, so we started R & R the items for a faster fix rate, especially on warranty jobs.

Some notes... not hating or trying to get thumbs down or people telling me I'm wrong. I love your channel. I have a 1987 Ram W150 that I got in great shape that the previous owners didn't know anything about cars and were building contractors so they were cheap. They would use it in the summer only during the day and then park it under a canopy during the winter. 1) if you're going to sell it to someone, you should probably figure out why the floor rusted out. The first generation Rams are very well known for leaking water from somewhere that I've been unable to find through exhaustive efforts. It didn't rust because of neglect, I guarantee it rusted from water sitting under the carpet. It will happen again and if you sell it to someone who parks it outside in the rain, they will be cursing you every time they open the door to find a puddle on the floor. And you will have wasted the extra money you spent on a new carpet kit. You can totally water test it if you want to prove it doesn't leak, but I would bet it does from somewhere. If you find it, please let me know so I can fix mine. 2) these trucks are also famous for not only not charging batteries , but draining them. I've gone through several batteries in two years of owning it. it's probably why your truck keeps trying to die at idle. In my truck, I can see a shiny new voltage regulator and the battery gauge has clearly been disconnected since it always sits at the middle. My next move is to replace the alternator, again cheap ass previous owners. It's almost like the more electronic load you put on the truck, the more it tries to stall due to weak spark? If you figure that out too, I would love to know so I can fix mine to drive at night with headlights 3) the wipers are also a huge mess. You said it was never the linkage but the motor, but you should have replaced the linkage bushings while you were in there. The refreshed motor will most likely destroy what little life is left in the bushings. I also heard Dad mention something about a new wiper motor costing something like $120 to replace. Not my experience on Rock Auto. But you serviced your motor. I bought a new one from rock auto because mine is so noisy and I have to replace my linkage bushings. Hope this all helps a bit but also really hope you're able to chase down all my issues. Specifically how you would replace all those stupid bushings because most RUclips videos just edit the hard parts out. Id be a fan for life if you and your Dad tackle that project. The bushings are like only a few bucks. Huge fan please keep it up! P.s. if you ever feel the need to come out to Western WA, i have a 2004 4.7 Ram that has been sitting behind my house for seven years now and just needs some love and attention and help to get her running again. Could be some good content lol.

Your 100 percent right dad. It's not dead till you look more.
Or make a tool. To do a job.
Or for me the tip. Or garbage place was my shop for free. Make things work. Think out of the box.
Yes dad I agree. Mick Australia 👍

I was so happy to see that camper shell come off. My grandfather had a 1970s Chevy pickup when I was growing up, it had a camper shell and I hated it. I had always wished he’d take it off and show off the nice truck.

I’m prob your dad’s age or older, but I’m w/you about the wheels. White steel wheels and dog dish caps will look classic. Those chrome ones look kinda dated. Thats just my 2 cents though.

Your vacuum gauge isn't reading miles per gallon, that's inches of mercury. It's measuring vacuum in inches, not mpg. Vacuum is useful for tuning a carb, adjust the idle mixture screws for the highest vacuum reading at idle.

If you do finishing sanding, using a block so you easily keep track of how much paint you remove will prevent burning through, even new paint that’s much thicker then an old paint job is always blocked out with no orbital being used because it’s just to much too fast. 💯

Too bad that early truck 230-1 400 block is missing. They have Thick webbing and are awesome with a stroker crank.

It's awesome to find the original build sheet for the truck. I'd have blurred the original owner's name and address though. Although he's an old man by now, he may still be alive and living at that address. People are crazy these days, you just never know.

My late mother would have loved the color; coffee with milk in it. Anytime she came to my aunt and uncle 's house, she would have a huge Dunkin' Donuts coffee cup with her. She however always called it Drunken Do Nots.

If you want to try to get those fender/signal lights working, you might be able to convert them to yellow LED's.

Great work and I love watching old school hacks/repairs to components like the heater blower and wiper motor. All the really nice work is great. The only thing I would have done which you may have done was scrub down the cab before you put the gas tank back in.

26:37 would you suggest spraying WD-40 to clean it? I have a similar build, and I am going through the same situation.
