I will never forget this fragment of this documentary. He played a few bars of Rachmaninoff's second concerto, whereas he never played it in public or recorded it. But he did record the third concerto three times. Rachmaninoff said Horowitz played the third one better than he did himself.
Vladimir Horowitz was my great-grand uncle. I was told I met him once when I was very little (early 1970s), but I don't remember. Thanks for posting this.
This is from the movie the last Romantic in which she says that she only got her fathers profile and not his musical greatness. She may have been good but we can't really tell because she never played professionally or anything because she did not want the pressure of the high standard her father set.
I love how Horowitz looks to the casual observer (who isn't familiar with him) in his later years like a decrepit old man, but then he blows your mind with the beauty and delicacy of his playing.
I've watched this a few times because it's so wholesome and I'll get back to it. I get goosebumps even in anticipation of those piano notes. I wish we would never lose legends like him.
Also he modulates from Minor to Phrygian (flamenco scale) in a couple of moments of the 1st and 2nd Symphonies which to the western ear may sound similar to the Double Harmonic. I truly love that touch.
[....he was a nice friend, my BEST friend! ] and then played with full of thoughts, satisfaction and joy. I get tears in my eyes every time I see this short 35 seconds clip... Imagine how beautiful their friendship was! 🥺
I could be wrong and maybe he was incredibly difficult but he always comes across to me as a nice person...which you really dont expect...he seems to have such little ego despite knowing what he was...not my favorite pianist but he was certainly amazing..
There is a video of Princess Diana and Charles doing a state visit in Australia during the 80s and going to a conservatory where they ask if Diana can play the piano. And she sits down and plays this exact same part of Rach#2 as Horowitz here
The Communists came to power in Russia in 1917, and we are still reaping the fruits of this tragedy. How many wonderful people were forced to move to the west.

love the way you put the orchestra over the video and perfectly sync with Horowitz's playing
It was so natural :))
The peak of the orchestra intro hits the "three things at once, and first class all three" point. I nearly swooned.
I cried a bit
Those 2 seconds he played the piano, sounded like an entire concert to me.
Those 2 seconds of playing convinced me that if he recorded the 2nd concerto, it would absolutely make me cry 24 hours.
The guy who could say "Rachmaninoff was my friend, my best friend", and this was real !
Vladimir Horowitz was my great-grand uncle. I was told I met him once when I was very little (early 1970s), but I don't remember. Thanks for posting this.
Amazing!!! How are you related? What a great connection to have! Is your last name Horowitz also?
Any other piano legends in your family that I could recommend my compositions to? Lol
No way! What’s your name?
You're royalty
Daaaang. So.. you are a Horowitz?
It’s an absolute crime that we don’t have a recording of Volodia playing the second concerto
You know Rachmaninoff was so special for Horowitz by just seeing how Horowitz expresses about him with such joy and wonder.
Everybody realize who his wife was?
She was the daughter of Toscanini, and was an accomplished musician in her own right.

They call them "the last two romantics" - in 20 century Rachmaninoff and Horowitz were the same as in the 19-th were Chopin and Liszt
0:06 “My best friend.” The way he said it, made it sound like he really cared a lot for Rach ❤
How magic are this few seconds? Incredible...
Holy smokes .... How in the world can a man of that age coax such marvelous sounds so effortlessly?
It was just in his essence
already the best ever recording of the 2nd concerto and it's barely seconds long
Omg this is so beautifully edited I'm crying 😭
I love how Horowitz looks to the casual observer (who isn't familiar with him) in his later years like a decrepit old man, but then he blows your mind with the beauty and delicacy of his playing.
Those few seconds just transported me to heaven and pulled me back to earth 💀
I love how you included the orchestra

Just reading the comment section here makes me happy. A society of great taste, intellectual, art lovers.
He said it all with his eyes just before he played it.
The algorithm has brought us all here to appreciate the skill and talent on display
The best Rach piano concerto No.2 we could have had!
단 몇 초만의 페시지만으로도 감동스럽다니..
this was so wholesome i cried, no joke
Rachmaninov was deeply influenced by middle eastern/Andalusian themes in his work, those double harmonic minor scales come up a lot
Also he modulates from Minor to Phrygian (flamenco scale) in a couple of moments of the 1st and 2nd Symphonies which to the western ear may sound similar to the Double Harmonic. I truly love that touch.
0:20 Nice timing with the background music! ❤️

@@MaScalo4508 I know, I guess I meant if it was recorded

Just those few notes and it's like being in a dream.
Wow, what a teaser. Would've loved to hear his take on Rach 2 😢

His eyes become so young, boyish almost, when he recounts his friendship with Rachmaninoff. Can't help but tear up a little.
what a gem
RUclips algorithm does it again

"Still great." 🥲
