I haven't tried the M3, but I have taken deer with the Montec. Here's what I do. I use Montecs early season, when leaves are thick. The penetration is just unmatched. They will pass through like they didn't even slow down. About mid November I switch to Swhakers. If I had to pick one....I'm going Montec. It does what it says on package. And if you buy the sharpening G5 sharpening tool, reusabilty is top notch. G5 does NOT make a bad product.
As someone who used the Montec for a few years, I found the Montec made more noise going through the air because of its open design. They were accurate, but I believe the noise they made flying through the air did affect how animals such as deer reacted to the shot at longer distances of 35+ yards.
We were there for the Simmon's Tent Sale, and Riley was trying to sell me these broadheads, and I mentioned I was waiting for the Lusk Review. If you get a chance to go by Simmon's, Fantastic Store it is worth the drive, and Riley knows his stuff.
Shot several mature bucks and does with montecs , 430grain total. From a 62 lb SR6. All pass through all found within 80 yards. Been fortunate to have made clean shots. Resharpen reuse.
Montec is still my go to head in areas I hunt that regulate a 3 blade heads. But was I stuck in the woods with either I would cry about it. Top job as usual John.
Lusk, one thing I've often wondered is the difference in penetration between a broadhead right out of the package versus a broadhead that has been sharpened with the Stay Sharp Broadhead system. Could be a cool video just saying. Love your videos!
That's a great question. I am going to address that in an upcoming vid called Broadheads & Bloodtrails. In short, sharpness does not affect penetration nearly as much as people think. But it does affect how effectively it cuts tissue, veins, and arteries. So all other things equal, a sharper head will draw more blood than the less sharper head.
@@LuskArcheryAdventures Yes this makes a lot of sense. You want those veins and arteries to slice cleanly. I've been getting my sevr broadheads to shave hair with the stay sharp broadheads system. Can't wait to see what they do.
Those are some awesome tests to really push their limits. I figured that you would give the slight “edge” to the M3 since it had better edge retention at 425 vs 550. I actually have used the Montec before but never on an animal sadly. I went away but came back last year with the Montec CS 100 grain. I won a 6 pack of 100 grain M3s a few months ago, but haven’t tried them out yet. I would have picked the 125s if they had them available at the time.
@@LuskArcheryAdventures 1/16 of an inch is virtually imperceptible to the eye and probably would have no impact on catching a vein or artery. I would agree they overall should be a tie but I would take the M3 for say an elk because of the edge retention and really wouldn't worry about penetration as evidenced by the same number of layers in the cardboard.
I've been watching you for years now and love the videos!! I have a theory about quite broadheads. I used to shoot the blackhornet, great broadhead but noise. I could hear it all the way to the target but sence switching to the Kudu my arrow is dead quite. I'd love to see some take on that challenge. Yes game can react to our bow noise but the longer the shot i think the more they react to the noise of the arrow. Thanks for all the cool content, I'm also a broadhead nut. ; )
Yeah, I've read a lot about that and tested it quite a bit myself. I've just never seen an animal react to arrow noise--and that includes up to a 100 yd shot on an elk and multiple 50+ yd shots on whitetail. A moving noise could be a bird flying by or a bug zipping by. But a static , pinpointed bow shot noise is completely different. Arrow flight could be an issue, but I've just never seen it.
Thank you. With the score sheets of each head, you can always compare one head to another. But when the specs are almost identical, I like doing these Battles.
Amazing comparison. Somehow I ordered M3s from Walmart and cost me only $15 but I will see what I can get. The other sellers posted it about $44. They look like great especially after watching your comparison video. All the best!
I shot montecs years ago and they were a pita to sharpen. Never really got em as sharp as I wanted. Maybe they make em different now. I’m gonna try some m3’s from my recurve. Thanks !! Great review.
Thanks for sharing that Tom. A 60 degree bevel like they have, will only get "so sharp." That's where the Stay Sharp Guide 344 sharpener comes in--it changes the bevel to 44 degrees and thus makes them MUCH sharper.
I love the Montec. First broadhead I ever used. Fortunately, it was also head that made me discover Dr. Ashby after I hit a doe shoulder and just stopped on a quartering towards. Got one lung I am sure but she was tough and got back into the woods. Next morning i found where she initial laid down, but the coyotes pushed her further north and got her. I found her later picked apart. Never did find the broadhead. Hopefully one of those yotes got a surprise in their bite. I have long since updated my arrow system and heads, but still think the Montec is a solid head.

I’ve hunted several years now with both the Montec and the m3 from both compound and traditional equipment. The m3 is without a doubt quieter in flight than the montec and has become my go to broadhead, the montec is however still a very good broadhead as well.
If you want to keep doing this your going to have to break down Pastor and get a Hooter Shooter. That would prove way more in terms of accuracy. That’s next level stuff. And needed in my opinion. Love the videos!
Man, I've already looked into getting one. The challenge is the price is about $3500 and then they're not easy to move around. I know my "margin of error" is getting bigger as I get older :)
I wonder about an audible difference. I know that I was using Montec's last season and they have a noticeable sound as they almost whistle through the air. I am guessing that this is why G5 came out with the M3- to avoid the noise created by the openings in the Montec.
M3 wins because its definitely quiter. Would you rather have a quite bow and a quite arrow? I would,as we all know in archery every little advantage helps.
Yeah, all other things equal, I'll take a quite flight arrow. But arrow flight is not a big concern to me if all things are not equal. I use Blazers with a 4 degree helical and they're pretty loud as it is.
for the sharpness test, at what point would the broadhead be unacceptable to shoot effectively. For example what is the most grams or score would you not shoot at an animal.
That's a good question, and one that's really difficult to answer. It largely depends on the steel being used and the blade geometry, not just the initial sharpness. Many heads that have thinner blades, gradual bevels, and cheaper steel are super sharp out of the box, but lose that sharpness after passing thru hide--so for most of the animal, they are really "dull." But all that being said, sharpness has little to do with penetration anyway. It does affect the effectiveness of the cutting, but not so much the penetration. And if you push anything with a decent size cut thru an animal, it's going to die.
Both held up very well the m3 won but they are the exact same head 1 simply sacrificed length and width to fill in the open areas. But overall fantastic job.
Well, if you want a larger cut than 1 1/16, they're not the exact same head :) Personally, the M3 is way too small of a cut for deer hunting, in my opinion. The Exodus for example has a 1 1/4" cut, and penetrates much deeper, is sharper, and more durable.
I bought the Montec g5 based on this video and man these broadheads are soooo dull out of the package. They will not even cut paper. I bought the sharpener and it help a tad but still so dull. Is it still reasonable to use such a dull head on white tail? I am a newer hunter and don’t have a ton of experience.
Sometimes a one piece three blade Broadhead can feel pretty dull, because of the 60° bevel on them. A great way to get them sharp is to get the stay sharp guide 344. That changes the bevel from 60° to 44° and makes them quite a bit sharper.
Thank you! Your content is great and helped me buy a bow, arrows, and heads. Do you think a 27 inch draw length, and fixed Montec g5 is a good setup for whitetail inside 40 yards.
I was once told that if you could get a BH that would cut the animal in half… that’s what you should shoot. Neither of these had much penetration in your gel test and despite pretty marked post shot sharpness tests they had equal penetration thru the layers of cardboard. Neither would make my cut!
I used the montec last year and had a nice 1” entrance & exit on a whitetail This year I’ll be trying mechanicals for the first time. Sevr 1.75. Fingers crossed.
That's a good one! M3 looked like it had better groups. M3 had better edge retention. Montec has a bigger cut and has good groups. Man the both sunk deep into that cinder block! I definitely think between the two it doesn't matter. I would definitely say it's a draw. If you want a bigger cut, go for the montec, if you don't care as much, m3 is your guy. Great battle!
I wonder if that was a tougher than normal mdf board. They didn't get nearly as penetration as I would have thought. I am interested in a G5 fixed due to their ballistic match point system. Judging by this test they penetrate as well or less than my Sevr 1.5 and 1.7's
They’re pretty standard. I even cut them from a much larger piece of MDF. Due to their length they have a bit of drag that impedes penetration in mediums like these, that don’t peel back when cut. Meat does tend to peel back when cut-but bone does not.
Cool battle but so similar that I can't really pick a winner either. I've got a set of 125 gr Montecs that shoot beautifully but because I've heard/read so many mixed reviews I've never hunted with them. After getting the QAD Exodus heads I just never pulled out the Montecs again. Should there ne a G5 Montec vs QAD Exodus video both in 125 gr??
Well, the Montec is 1 1/8" and the Exodus is 1 1/4", so I don't do a Battle any more if the specs are different. But you can compare the scores of each and see the "battle" cause the tests are identical. And in that comparison, there is ZERO comparison. The Exodus is sharper, holds its edge better, more durable, flies better, penetrates deeper and has a larger cut. I can't understand anyone choosing a Montec or M3 over an Exodus.
@@LuskArcheryAdventures One reason someone might choose a Montec over a Exodus is local laws. In Idaho the QAD Exodus is illegal because it is considered to be barbed. I was wanting to switch to those after all your positive comments about them but after looking into it I found out both versions of them are illegal here. That said if there are no restrictions QAD Exodus seems like the one to use (although I haven't used either myself).
Thank you. There are so many great ones. I think some of the best all round fixed blade head in the normal price category are the Exodus and Tooth of the Arrow.
The m3 shoots about 5” high from my field points. My micro hades hit right with my field points. I think the solid construction just planes bad with my setup
I wasn't surprised that the 125 Montec curled on the tip. I failed to notice that a buck a few years back had his offside leg back a little. Double lunged him but the movement after the shot curled the tip. Huge pressure from the large bone @ the top of the leg where it meets the shoulder. I was never able to get the Montecs scary sharp like u can with the Bishop Holy Trinity. However I lost 1 of them when a doe turned & quartered away as I released my arrow. The arrow stopped after going through the whole body cavity & jammed in her brisket/leg pit. I did find the hair covered in blood from the exit wound. The coyotes got her. My neighbor with greenhouses was happy I took her out. Would have been nice to recover her. She caused alot of trouble for him. I wonder how the Deepower would compare to that M3?🤔
Please review the carbon steel head, much more durable than the original Montec and holds its edge much better….while still offering the same amazing flight characteristics
Judging by your scores, the edge retention should probably have been the deciding factor. The M3 (from your testing) definitely edged out the Montec. I'm completely unbiased because I have not shot either. But it seemed pretty clear that that M3 just beat the Montec. It's all good though! Great job as always John!! Good luck this season. What head(s) will you be using this season and what weight will they be? -Love from NH
Well, the M3 was better in edge retention, but neither were super sharp and it was slightly better in penetration in one of the mediums. But the Montec has a larger cut, so that evened it out in my mind. If I were hunting deer with either head (which I won't be) I would choose the Montec just based on having a larger cut.
@@LuskArcheryAdventures definitely. My uncle and his son both use the Montec. They like the way it flies compared to their practice tips. To each their own. What you do makes a difference. Everyone is able to make a more informed decision. I really appreciate it. Thank you.
@@LuskArcheryAdventures sweet I'll get them out to you. I have the 125 grain version. They are on sale at Midway USA for 18 bucks so I bought a bunch of them.
I wish I could put 100 likes to this!!!! Less than 2 min in andm curious…Edited after watching full vid? Original montec a tried and true Bh for many years!!!Awesome comparison Mr Lusk
Honestly I’m disappointed in both heads penetration. Unless John got some new MDF that inhibits penetration or something, I thought they both should have went to at least 8 inches.
James, you're correct--and same MDF. They don't penetrate as well as many other heads--at least in these mediums. Less surface area usually creates deeper penetration, again, at least in these mediums.
Sure. I understand that. The purpose of my testing is to provide comparative data points to see the outer limits of what a head can endure. An angled shot on heavy bone is much more damaging than steel plate or concrete, head on
Well, thanks for watching. But pointless? Not at all. The goal of these tests is to provide data points for how each head performs in a consistent test. The tests reveal the limits of what a head can do; it's strengths & weaknesses. Pretty much any broadhead can kill an animal with a well placed shot. But there are some that perform much better than others and thus stack the odds of success more in your favor. By comparing the data points, you can find the head that works best for you and your hunting set up and the animals you're pursuing. For example, if one head loses a blade on one shot thru the steel plate and another looks brand new after 5 shots--all other things equal--wouldn't you rather hunt with the head that could handle that kind of impact?
I haven't tried the M3, but I have taken deer with the Montec. Here's what I do. I use Montecs early season, when leaves are thick. The penetration is just unmatched. What is your favorite 3 blade? I'm looking for a wider three blade
Hard to beat the Exodus.
I’ve hunted several years now with both the Montec and the m3 from both compound and traditional equipment. The m3 is without a doubt quieter in flight than the montec and has become my go to broadhead, the montec is however still a very good broadhead as well.
Thanks for sharing that experience.
@@LuskArcheryAdventures wow!!! I’m sorry man, I had NO idea they were that expensive…. Still great videos man!
@@LuskArcheryAdventures a crossbow is MUCH cheaper and same basic principle as a hooter shooter when benched on sand bags.
I wonder about an audible difference. I know that I was using Montec's last season and they have a noticeable sound as they almost whistle through the air. I am guessing that this is why G5 came out with the M3- to avoid the noise created by the openings in the Montec.
Yeah, I commented on that in the conclusion. One of the big advantages of the M3 is the quietness in flight--if that matters to you.
Thanks for your input, appreciate all you've done for the archery world.
for the sharpness test, at what point would the broadhead be unacceptable to shoot effectively.
The real challenger for Montecs is the 'NAP HellRazor'. That would be a true apples to apples comparison.
I need to test that one too
I was once told that if you could get a BH that would cut the animal in half… that’s what you should shoot. Neither of these had much penetration in your gel test and despite pretty marked post shot sharpness tests they had equal penetration thru the layers of cardboard. Neither would make my cut!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. While I understand many people like them, I prefer a wider cut as well.
I used the montec last year and had a nice 1” entrance & exit on a whitetail This year I’ll be trying mechanicals for the first time. Sevr 1.75. Fingers crossed.
& thank you for the best broadhead reviews known to man
Good luck!
They worked great! Heavy 8 pointer! Michigan.
Thank you
I wonder if that was a tougher than normal mdf board.
They both look like great 👍 broad heads. 🏹
Yeah...both can work for sure.
@@LuskArcheryAdventures I see. That all makes sense to me. Thanks
This is awesome. Have you considered a comparison between the original Montec and the carbon steel Monte?
Yeah, that would be interesting to do. If someone sends me a pack of both, I'll gladly do it.
@@LuskArcheryAdventures where do I send them
Well I pick the original montec g5 because I bought 10 packs when Walmart had a clearance at 7.00 for 3 broadheads.
Gotta love those sales!
@@LuskArcheryAdventures Love your videos and I share them often. Keep up the good work.
Hope you get your hands on the Slick Trick Assailant Hybrid and put it through your test.
Yeah, I have a buddy donating me a pack.
Great video sir! What would be your go to non mechanical head?
Thank you. There are so many great ones. I think some of the best all round fixed blade head in the normal price category are the Exodus and Tooth of the Arrow.
I’ve shot the g5 before and it shot strait but dosnt do well gainer shale and dor sharpen to well
Thanks for sharing your experiences.
@@LuskArcheryAdventures no problem man
The m3 shoots about 5” high from my field points. My micro hades hit right with my field points. I think the solid construction just planes bad with my setup
Okay. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Thanks for the comment Joseph.
Bro using the PulsePoint sound clip for your transitions is evil.
:)
Simmons in Bastrop?
Not sure what that means.
@@LuskArcheryAdventures Simmons sporting goods
Please review the carbon steel head, much more durable than the original Montec and holds its edge much better….while still offering the same amazing flight characteristics
Yeah, I'd like to do that. If someone donates a pack, I'll gladly test it.
Metal injection molded? You mean cast?😂
Yep. Thanks
I always use G5 cs over stainless they are harder and sharper best bang for your back
Ok
Thank you.
I have a spare pack of NAP DK4 broadheads if you want to try them out.
Yeah, I've been wanting to test them. Thank you. 6159 Nottingham Dr, Johnston, Iowa 50131 :)
@@LuskArcheryAdventures sweet I'll get them out to you. I have the 125 grain version. They are on sale at Midway USA for 18 bucks so I bought a bunch of them.
Great comparo
Thank you
Either is my vote based on your tests.....
I think user error is the difference
Great comment. I tend to agree with that.
Bro that concert shot hurt to watch
:)
I tested the M3 on an elk last September. Frontal shot at 19 yards, exited through his last rib. #topofutaharchery
Very good. Thank you for sharing that experience.
M3 the only broadhead I will use. It's truly an excellent arrowhead.
Glad to hear your thoughts.
I love this guy my wife would be so pissed if I did this in my basement
Haha. I rule the basement :) She's got the upstairs.
I bagged my first deer with a compound bow using the montec head he went 25 yards that's my pick
Nice!
Came here after watching that Montec rip right through a riot shield lol
Nice
I wish I could put 100 likes to this!!!! Less than 2 min in andm curious…Edited after watching full vid? Original montec a tried and true Bh for many years!!!Awesome comparison Mr Lusk
I'm not sure what you're referencing at the 2 min mark; there was no editing there.
@@LuskArcheryAdventures I meant I edited my comment
Montec’s are great broadheads.
Yep. Tried & true. Wish the had a shorter profile & wider cut though.
420 is what buck knives use in most of their knives
Yep. Most common steel in broadheads.
I killed a bull elk pass through with the m3 100grain
Nice. Thanks for sharing that experience.
One thing I'm sure of is you're a better shot than me with a bow lol
:)
WHY NOT USE BOTH!;!??? 🏹
Sure
M3 is for bigger game like elk or moose. Purely from that extra penetration.
Honestly I’m disappointed in both heads penetration. Unless John got some new MDF that inhibits penetration or something, I thought they both should have went to at least 8 inches.
Yeah, in theory, but the penetration was WAY less than that of the Exodus or Slick Trick SS3 or Tooth of the Arrow
James, you're correct--and same MDF. They don't penetrate as well as many other heads--at least in these mediums. Less surface area usually creates deeper penetration, again, at least in these mediums.
I don't think anyone is looking for a smaller cut...lol
That head is out.
Some people want more penetration ( that's what she said)
Haha. Yeah, neither penetrated very well, compared to the Exodus or SS3 for example.
Have you ever had an animal “jump the string” on you?
Oh yeah. Check out a vid I have, shooting an impala in Africa. It dropped about 18 inches or so. It's in my Africa Bowhunting Playlist.
Montec hands down
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
@@LuskArcheryAdventures I was able to laid down to wild hogs with the same broadhead without sharpening
Lost more deer with that head . Flew great but the penatration was terrible.
Yeah, they didn't penetrate very well in my testing either. Compare them to an Exodus--no comparison.
Who hunts Concrete or Steel! Animals have Soft tissue! Lings & ❤️
Sure. I understand that. The purpose of my testing is to provide comparative data points to see the outer limits of what a head can endure. An angled shot on heavy bone is much more damaging than steel plate or concrete, head on
These are pointless displays dude
