ANNIHILATOR Broadhead Battle: Original vs XL

  • Here is my sharpness scoring scale, using the Edge on Up Sharpness Testing Machine:
    First of all, what are some common scores for other edges? Here are some examples:
    A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the wire.
    A new high end cutlery edge takes approx 375 grams of pressure to break the wire.
    A utility razor blade takes approx 200 grams to break the wire.
    Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
    Out of the Box Sharpness:
    0-200 gr: 10
    201-300 gr 9
    301-400 gr: 8
    401-500 gr: 7
    501-600 gr: 6
    601-700 gr: 5
    701-800 gr: 4
    801-900 gr: 3
    901-1000 gr: 2
    1001-1100 gr: 1
    1101+ gr: 0
    Edge Retention: Sharpness difference after Penetration Test 1:
    10 minus 1 point for every 50 grams of sharpness difference. For example, if the initial sharpness was 400 gr of pressure and the sharpness after Penetration Test 1 was 450, the head would receive a 9 for Edge Retention Score.

    #annihilator
    #staysharpguide
    I've previously tested the Annihilator Original...please check out that video if you've not seen it yet. But my biggest critique of it was its relatively small cutting diameter. Granted, it's design lends it to displacing more tissue than most other fixed blade heads. But the XL has now boosted its value quite a bit by allowing it to cut about 17 % more tissue. That intrigues me.
    But does it fly well? Does it penetrate well? Is it durable enough? These are the questions we must answer.
    In addition to this, I have improved some of my testing procedures...yet again :) I am now using a Sharpness Tester by Edge on Up, to test the factory sharpness as well as the sharpness AFTER Penetration Test 1. This is a bit more objective and accurate than my previous push paper test.
    I'm also testing flight by shooting a group of one field point and two broadheads at 40 yds, to see how well they fly similarly.
    And I've created a new LUSK GRADE for each head, based on how it performs in my testing. It will receive anywhere between 0 and 10 "Golden Arrows."
    I've also demonstrated how the new "344" Broadhead Sharpener by Stay Sharp Guide works by changing the bevel angle of a solid 3 blade head from 60 degrees to 44, thus making it much sharper.
    I have also picked up a new sponsor with my top recommendation for Broadhead Sharpening. staysharpguide.com The support I get for that has helped me improve my channel.
    Also check out detailed vids on how to use the Stay Sharp Guide here on RUclips at: Stay Sharp: / @staysharp6771

    Great video as always! I have the original version and for anyone interested in sharpening these, I found that once finished on my finest diamond stone, they were sharper than they came from the factory. Being somewhat crazy about my personal view of what hunt sharp should be, I pulled mine backwards down a super fine compound loaded strop. My use of the word backwards, I gently held one blade and held two blades on the strop pulling the threaded end down the strop with no downward pressure, just letting the broadhead basically just touch the strop. The tip of the broadhead is the trailing end of this method. This makes these heads SCARY SHARP! I hope this helps anyone interested. John, I absolutely love your videos and always find them helpful and extremely informative.

    Nice video!
    Would love to see an angled penetration test. Something fairly steep, say, 30 or 35dg, that would help weed out some of the BH that are not good with angled shots.
    Really like your changes to the sharpness test, however, we need some type of scale to compare to, such as a razor blade on one end of the scale and, IDK, a butter knife on the other end.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  3 года назад +1

      I used to test angle shots, but they pretty much all did the same on them. On the score sheet I provide my own score of 1-10 for sharpness and edge retention to translate the grams of pressure to a practical broadhead number.

  • @frankrenzoni4240
    @frankrenzoni4240 3 года назад

    In my opinion the previous testing methods were good. However, I think the changes made are a big improvement. The sharpness test looks more accurate and more repeatable. I think the previous accuracy test was very good at providing proof of long range capabilities of the briadheads. The average hunter is probably best served by the new method with the 40 yard range. Many archers can regularly hit targets at 70 yards but having the experience necessary to determine if you should shoot at an animal that far away is best left to the small percentage of hunters capable of not only making the shot but knowing when its appropriate for the given situation. The new broadhead battle convinced me of its ability to not only penetrate but survive penetration in hard mass. I've watched most of your videos and this one was one of my favorites. Great video

    Best scientific testing, this is great. The cost of heads nowadays is very expensive and as a consumer this really helps. I don’t mind spending the money, especially after spending over 1k for just the bow. We should spend appropriately on the broad head as well since it is one of the most important parts of the killing process and as a hunter we owe it to the prey to do it effectively and efficiently. Cost should nit be the inhibiting factor if the broad head is built properly.
    Edit: use a chisel to remove your broad head from the cement, might save it.

    Killed my first archery buck late in the season with a 150 XL. Quartering away, liver shot. He went about 80 yards and was down before I could even get down from my saddle. Upon removal of the intervals, you could see a defined wound channel through the liver, and a whole soup of blood in the torso. Can’t speak to the blood trail, because I could see where he fell, so I didn’t have to track him, but there was a lot where he went down.

      Yeah, I've seen that. Those machines are really pricey and the basic bathroom scales are pretty rough. But honestly, what happens when you push it thru slowly has almost zero to do with what happens when it flies at 280 fps or more. People misunderstand that. Same is true with a 3:1 ratio design--fine for designing optimum angle for a wheel chair ramp, but not very relevant for a high speed projectile.

However I really don't know how "sharp" it is considering there really is nothing to compare it to; where as I can see how well a Broadhead can cut through paper. Hey I wonder if you could repeat the penetration test after using the Stay Sharp Guide and see if there is a measurable increase in penetration?

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  3 года назад

      Well, the sharpness of a head doesn't have as much to do with penetration as people think. I've taken a couple 2 blade heads and dulled one with a steel file--super dull, and the other was razor sharp. The penetration difference was .5" However, I'm sure the sharp one would cut that tissue it passes over much more effectively than the dull one. And that improves bloodletting.

    I also have a SS 344 and use it on most of my heads. I just ordered the Annihilators and was wondering, did you bother to sharpen the back of the blades? How would you suggest it or isn't it necessary?

      Not, that's not necessary at all; that's only of minor importance in pulling the head out of a target or it cutting as it backs out of an animal if it doesn't get a pass thru.

    i have used the original 100g annihilators for a few years. sharpened many times. have had pass throughs several times directly into rocks. have only had one break the tip. other than that, all ive had to do is touch up the blades on some sharpening stones to 6000grit and boom! they are ready to use again. i have absolutely no idea why more people arnt using these! i shot a turkey (and if anyone knows turkeys will often run around or fly off when shot by a mechanical or two blade) and that bird didnt take one single step! dropped in its tracks! only broadhead ill ever use! this year im going to the XL!

      Great question. With it still be a 44 degree bevel, it's going to be very durable; especially with the steel that these heads use. And the cool thing is if you don't like it or are out in the field, you can still just sharpen them back to 60 degrees on any flat surface.

    In my opinion you should dip the heads in olive oil or any oil before you shoot them through the jell to simulate blood and get correct penatration results

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  3 года назад

      Yeah, I've tried different things like that--baby powder, oil, etc. There are two problems: One, most of it comes off in the rubber mat and the MDF, and Two, the rest stays in my gel and hinders the consistency/clarity when I re-melt it. As long as I am consistent with each head, whether I use a lubricant or not, it should still be a fair comparison between the heads.

      Yes, there is. On the last video of 2021, which is a Scoring Summary of 2021, there is a link to a spreadsheet of all the scores. And to your other question, yes, the Deadmeat with its thinner blades is "sharper" than the Annihilator even at the 44 degree bevel. The edge integrity will be MUCH better with the Ann, but the felt sharpness not as good.

Weight of the broadhead and partial arrow shaft alone didn’t even mark the rubber band. Will see how these sharpen up, but very disappointing for a higher than box store priced product.
