  • Roofing basics how to install ridge cap. Although this is just a simple Gable garage, the hip and ridge basics are pretty much the same. There is a slight difference if you're installing on a ridge that goes into another section, which we hope to cover in a future video.

    I have the utmost respect for you guys, being able to walk around on a pitched roof safely. I used to be able to do that, and now at 72 yrs. years old i am unsteady on a 6' ladder. Stay safe.

    Your one of the good ones however scrap the broom and invest in a blower to finalize the roof. More time efficient and you won’t remove granular.

      Worked with a guy who used a blower, but didn't pick up all the loose nails from the roof beforehand. Drove me insane how I was hearing random dings from the nails that he blew around the house. Annoyed the shit out of me.

    Are the ridge caps a packaged item or do you make them out of a full shingle?
    What’s the repair process for the top row of shingles at the ridge cap?
    Should you expect to remove several caps , replace the dang shingles and install caps removed?
    Lastly, I have a roof where they used staples to install the shingles. What’s your thoughts on staples?

    • @GrandRoofingInc
      @GrandRoofingInc  3 года назад +1

      You can either make ridge cap out of 3 tab shingles or you can buy the actual hip and ridge already made, that you just break into pieces. The hip and ridge that is bought already cut and ready to go is worth it. It is also thicker and will hold up better than a 20-year 3 tab that you cut. If I understand you right, replacing a top row of shingles you will need to loosen and reuse or replace your hip and ridge. As far as Staples they are not good. I would never recommend installing anything with a staple. Its lack of surface area is Like a knife cutting through the shingles. They don't hold. I wouldn't necessarily replace it just because of that but I would never install a new roof with them.

    How often do you find roof leaks as a result of exposed nails or water finding its way to a nail under a shingle? If you don't already have, please do a video with headwall flashing installation and comment on methods of others you find in the fields that have failed. Too many times guys will nail shingles over the flashing to cover it for esthetics.. but then any water that finds its way under the shingles, due to wind or such driven rain, now runs down under the shingles along exposed nails. Also please comment on how long exposed nails covered with some sort of sealant or roofing tar last with such protection? do they last the life of the shingles? do you find leaks where nails have been protected from the elements in such a way? Thanks!

    • @GrandRoofingInc
      @GrandRoofingInc  3 года назад

      this would just answer one of the questions quickly but most of the leafs I find because of nails in the wrong location or more specifically in the key ways. It does take them quite a while, I'm talking like years before the elements rust the nail causing water to drip in. biggest issue I find with endwall flashing is if they did not lap it on top of a shingle. We don't find many if any leaks at all because they hid the flashing. The only leaks we find in that flashing area are when they didn't bring the metal low enough covering the key way of the under lying head lap.

    Maybe a little too fast for my liking. Aren't you supposed to nail down one side and then, with your hand push and press down the whole shingle toward the other side before you nail other side. So as to have a tight fit with no voids??

    What's your take on all the online roofing pay-for-lead company's today? Do you partake, or recommend any specific company like Thumbtack, Home Advisor, Yelp, Angies List...etc?

    • @GrandRoofingInc
      @GrandRoofingInc  3 года назад

      Not a fan of any of them. Definitely not home advisor, they are a huge scam
      Also Yelp. They take leads and sell them too many contractors even after the job is done. I had a friend that was being charged $1,000 a month, it was a nightmare to get canceled. He would tell me he would get the lead call the customer within an hour and a customer would yell at him that he had the job done months ago and to quit calling. My honest opinion is building your own brand, and reviews! Optimize your SEO and customers will find you. I recommend not relying on someone else that could change everything on you with a stroke of a mouse click. I'm sure there probably are some good ones out there but not those current models. There's probably only one that I would even recommend and that would be Roofing insights. Hope that might be helpful information.

    Why do you guys not use ring nails for the final ridge cap piece? I know we try to use them here in Alberta, and when we don't have any on the job site, we'll do what you just did with the regular roofing nails and dabs of silicone.

    • @GrandRoofingInc
      @GrandRoofingInc  3 года назад +1

      Most of the time we typically do ridge vent. The ridge vent normally comes with ring shank inch and 3/4 nails. This lady just wanted a couple Ventsput in, so we just used the coil nails we had.
