  • In this video I show you how to diy roof ventilation and how to install Cobra rigid vent 3 and why I upgraded my roof ventilation with this product. My home is built in the 40's so by design roof ventilation was not a thing back then. Builders only installed gable vents on sides of houses.

    Great video, thanks. I just re-roofed my house, last step is ridge vent, thought I was nearly done. Just discovered my cap shingles are too narrow for the Cobra 3. Why on earth would GAF make this product to not fit standard cap shingles? It's baffling, and very irritating. In my opinion, architectural shingles don't look good as cap shingles. Now I'm considering custom-cutting my cap shingles, ignoring the perforations.

    • @SplashJohn
      @SplashJohn Год назад

      I have since learned that Cobra vent is also made in a smaller size for smaller cap shingles. Oops.

      Awesome, thats the big question regarding GAF offering a 11 1/2" precut ridge cap. I could not find one. Hopefully someone from GAF will see this video and your question to help us out.

      @@Therealhomeinspectionauthority Sorry, I guess I wasn't clear. GAF makes Cobra Ridge Vent 3 in two sizes: 11.5" (which fits 12" cap shingles) and 9" (which fits 10" cap shingles). Unfortunately, no retailer in my area carries the 9" Cobra, and I didn't have time to get them shipped, so I had to go with the larger size. The manufacturer of my shingles (Pabco) doesn't make 12" cap shingles, so I ended up getting a different brand of 12" cap shingles. Color match wasn't perfect, but close enough.

      You cannot see the top of the cap from the ground so it doesn't matter. But i get your point.

    The video was good until the ridge caps. GAF makes a perforated Seal A Ridge that would have worked perfectly. The laminate shingle is not made to be a cap shingle. I hope you dont have issues with the dragons tooth coming off in high winds. I do suggest removing the whirley bird. That can cause your ridge vent to become an intake vent, and it's not designed for that. 9:57

      Thanks for the input, i was not able to find a ridge cap to fit the width. Do you have any information on what stores may carry that? As for the whirly bird its scheduled for removal.

      @@Therealhomeinspectionauthority Almost any roofing supplier near you will be able to sell a GAF cap shingle for you. That way you cover the ridge vent with a 12" piece that is made for capping homes. Good luck and keep up the content.

    You have multiple exhaust vents now which will short circuit and decrease or eliminate any air flow from the soffit.

      @derek.morrison Месяц назад

      Interesting. So, when using ridge vents, you don't want to have any other separate vents lower on the roof?

    • @uofudavid
      @uofudavid 27 дней назад

      @@derek.morrison You have the air intake as low as possible ~ eaves and the exhauset to be as high as possible ~ ridge.
      But only one source for intake one one option for exhaust unless there is a very good reason then try to place the intakes at similar elevations and the exhausts at similar elevations.

    Great video but get the 12" ridge shingles, they will have the tar strip on them and will do a better job. I've been using this product for years now and I use Owens Corning ridge shingles.

    I have mine installed back 2021 and I just noticed that the plastic part of the vent being chewed up by squirrels. I probably need to replace all the vents and also install the ridge vent guard. Just want to share the information to those who want to install this kind of vents and have trees nearby that squirrels can make damage easily.

    I'm curious why you ended up cutting your own ridge shingle when HD sells the GAF ridge cap shingles that are 11 1/2 - 12 in wide to fit the full width of the cobra ridge vent? Were you not able to find these at your local HD?

    I have monier spanish tile and the ridges are barrel tiles. So who do I use when I slot that ridge. They can just sit over ridge- with a single central nail & will not blow them away- save for a Modesto California Tornado; but I need to seal with strips os something soft to mold the perpendicular flat / ridge roll tiles something breathable also since I can leave it open for all to enter.

    I think stainless steel screws would be much better than nails to fasten the ridge vent down. Pests are amazingly strong and persistent at pulling up things.

      Absolutely, A few days later after the heat of the day passed I put my thermal gun facing the ridge vent and the air escaping thru the vent was 10 degrees hotter than the roof.
