T-shaped roofs: Due to pitch, ridge vent should be miter cut at 45 degrees in plan view otherwise it won't lay flat.

I need one of these on a porch but have a doubled up 2 x 10 ridge beam ( 3 inches total width ).Looking at 2:08 at the size of that gap they cut, looks like I could still cut 1/2" on either side and be safe from leakage?

Say no to 50/50. Why? the building is better off with slight positive pressure [a few pascals] in an attic. Go 60/40 [eaves vs ridge]. There is both a very slight difference of air density on account of elevation differential, plus hot air both wants to rise and expand, gaining some velocity. Go look at a set of cylinder heads for an example of proof of concept: intake valve is big, exhaust is small - its worked well for almost a century. You get a little extra help keeping sheathing dry if minor moisture ingress exists, plus it assists against negative ventilation issues inside, which would add to aircon bills and humidity control problems.

over driven nailing in ridge vents must be what often causes them to look so freakin bad as they appear wavy and buckle as mentioned in the vid... maybe its the nailing guns... it would seem hand nailing these carefully would give the better result

At 3:31 did he install the cap shingles upside down? The black strips don't look right.
    Thanks.

Hello, just had my roof re-shingled, should the ridge vent itself always be completely flush against the shingles or is there some allowance for gap variances? I'm assuming the nail(s) penetrated the roof. Since, its not flush. I can see a part of nail between the top of the shingle and the bottom of the ridge vent. I cannot truly say how much of a gap. Took a pic of it from the edge of my roof top of a ladder and was straining to see it. I'm not to anxious to get on the roof. And this is not just one nail, it looks that way pretty much throughout the ridge vent(s).

John Henley that is normal, you will be able to see some of the nails through the ridge vent sides, depending what angle you are at.

Most instructions for these type of ridges show caulking applied to the outer edge of unit. Yet, I never see a single video where someone does this.......?????

that's going to leak, unless you seal the entire length of the sides of the vent, with sealer, like this fella does ruclips.net/video/M74wH5oUGfk/видео.html or like this guy does, seals entire length of vent with GEOCEL sealer. ruclips.net/video/M74wH5oUGfk/видео.html these are the only 2 guys on entire net who so far, know how to seal a ridge vent correctly. better yet, don't use a ridge vent- put the vent under the eaves at the peak area, like the old homes did, and face the vent outlet downward. and shingle the top ridge board solid. all these new ridge vents do, is provide a big, long hole slot, for water and insects to get in. they all eventually leak, and the worst roof leaks I had in my life, were from a ridge vent that leaked along the sides, because the roofer didn't seal the sides with sealer. ever notice how the 20 year shingles on old homes with no ridge vent, last 40-50 years ? my house will not be reshingled for the 3RD TIME since it was built in 1986, that's 3 roofs in 32 years. but my garage and shed, have roofs that are 32 years old, and 22 years old, and no ridge vents, and cheaper shingles, and they don't leak. RIDGE VENTS LEAK ALONG THE SIDES if not sealed with permatex, along the entire length of vent, both sides. and they must be RESEALED every 5 years or so, just like chimney and sewer vent flashings.
