I have been looking on how to cap my small shed with the shingles I had. You explained the process in working mans terms.
Thank you for taking the time to film this.
Thank you 🙏🏽 so much!
Nice tips. I find it easier for me to cut shingles from the back side using a regular blade; one score and easily snaps off. This causes the least damage to blades and I don't have to fight with the cut by going over it multiple times cutting from the rough front side of the shingle. I use the hook blade when I have to cut from the front side when cutting shingles to edge them at the rake.
Thank you!! I searched forever to find a video on architectural shingles ridge caps. Glad I found this one!! Helping me out big time. I didn't know I could use regular architectural shingles for my ridge cap.
Thank you 🙏🏽 for the love!
You really can't/shouldn't. Look at any roof near you with architectural shingles. They'll almost always have cut up 3 tab, or some kind of custom capping. This is extremely time consuming to end up with improper capping. He didn't finish the capping properly, or nail it properly. But its probably water tight..-Professional roofer
@@chandlermanning332 but you never said what the problem with using architectural these shingles for the ridge cap ????
@@dillwiggle2 I have done this and the roof has been water tight for 10 years.
Excellent, just what I needed to know to finish the roof on my woodshed. I didn't want to buy a whole pkg of special ridge caps for a small roof with no ridge vent. Much appreciated.
I’m glad I could be of help! 🙏🏽😊
You do not want to install architectural shingles over a ridge. The reveal will seperate from the base sheet of the shingle. This is a method that roofers automatically assume you do not know what your doing. Get a matching 3 tab or spend the money on actual hip and ridge.
Thank you sir for your input! Much love and respect 🙏🏽
Have these leaked since installation?
Thank you! Everyone else made it difficult to understand for architectural shingles. Perfect video.
Thank you! Helpful, simple and up to the point.
Architectural shingles for cap? What a hack!
Hell yeah super simple explanation on how to finalize the roof project, thanks for sharing!
Again, another good video. Clear explanations, including the math. I appreciate the effort you make doing these
Thank you so much! Means a lot! 🙏🏽😊
Great video! Thanks. One thing you were doing wrong with this type of shingle was lining up the shingles to the nail line instead of the top of the cut out. I used the same type of shingle and wasn't sure how to do the ridge cap with this dual layer type of shingle, thanks again. Done plenty with the old style of shingles with the slots cut in them, these were new to me.
Super video and good explanation for cutting the tabs at 35 deg angle.
These are the exact shingles I installed yesterday down to the color and was wondering how to do the roof cap with the architectural style shingles. There are all kinds of videos with regular shingles but yours is the only with the architectural style! Very helpful and informative thanks a bunch
Spend the 45 dollars for a bundle of ridge cap, they make it for a reason.
They don’t have videos on it because it is totally incorrect. Architectural style shingles are not meant to be installed over a ridge.
There are no videos since professional roofers don't use architectural shingles on the ridge.
Even knowledgeable diyers don't
I'm sure there is a reason
if you flip the shingles upside down when you cut them it makes it easier and makes your blade last longer! nice tutorial bro
Thank you for the tip! And thank you! 😊
looks really good, thanks for keeping it simple
Thank you! 🙏🏽😊
Thanks your a good man and nicely done video production too.
Thank you so much! 🙏🏽🙏🏽
Great job ,Thanks a bunch .
Thank you 🙏🏽!
This was helpful never used Arch. Shingles to Cap with looks good and will match exact (on my left over cheap shingles i picked up) Thanks
Thanks for the help
This is helpful and simple...Thank you.
Thank you for the feedback! 🙏🏽😊
Great video. Thanks for taking the time to post! Could you use these very same shingles on an actual ridge vent?
Thank you for your help
Thank you for the informative video 👏👏👏👏👏🇨🇦
It was my pleasure Luis! 😊🙏🏽
Great video man. I built a chicken coop a few years ago and ran the shingles all the way to the top but stopped at the ridge since i had never done shingles before. This video helped me be able to finish it up!
You didn’t finish the roof for years?
Thanks sir
Thanks bro
Good job 👍 I think you will love a hook blade ,for your utility knife ,you will love it ✅
I wish I had one at the time. Now I know to get one on the next roof job! Thank you 🙏🏽
Nice explanation.
🙏🏽 thank you! 😊
Thanks man.
You are very welcome 🙏🏽
Thank you
Awesome video bro
Thank you 🙏🏽
Good job, good video ,thanks
Thank you 🙏🏽
Thanks😎👍
Thank you 🙏🏽
I thought about doing the same thing, but the problem is those ridge caps don't have the proper tar located in the proper areas. So eventually they will blow off and will not seal right...
That hammer !!!
I would like to ask you , is there a reason my roofers would not go all the way to the end when doing a ridge cap?
If you cut it from the backside your knife will last much longer. Good video.
I hate to read directions but I was riveted to your video. Thank you for the help
Thank you so much! 🙏🏽😊
Thanks very much for taking the time to create this video, you've saved me a lot of time and effort!
Thank you for watching 🙏🏽
Thanks
Thank you!
Thanks, was able to use this technique for a chicken coop
Here is a tip. I came across this square headed metal working hammer that never dimples the shingles, they sell them somewhere, and they have just the right weight for roofing so your hand never gets tired or injured from over use.
Thanks for the clear explanation. Couple of questions though. Why not use 3 tab or actual cap shingles? Those architectural shingles are not meant to be bent and look like they're ungluing already. Also, why is the roof two different colors? :P
That’s what I’m saying why didn’t you just buy ridge cap your not supposed to use singles on ridges .
@@robertandrade4888 Some shingle companies don't make 3 tab shingles the same color as their Architectural shingles. That's what I'm running into. I have to do mine like this simply because Gaf doesn't make 3 tab shingles in Oyster. Also, you can see that his top shingles are folded over the peak. There's no way water is getting in there. Also, the shingle under the decorative tabs on the architectural shingles are SOLID. So no way water is getting to the peak.
Why does all the roofs I’ve seen and other videos use 3 tab shingles for the ridge cap ? No one has really said why but they never use the archintectural shingle for the ridge cap. Do they start to peel apart maybe after they are bent like that ???
You’re supposed to use three tabs as cap
THIS GUY IS A BUTCHER. THEY WILL DELAMINATE AND LEAK
Good job. Thank you for the video.
Thank you 🙏🏽 so much for the support and for finding it useful
I cut my shingles with a chop saw. I did wear face shielding.
13 year roofer here....don't do this just buy the actual hip and ridge cap. Those shingles will 💯 fail and who knows what damage will come from it. Pay the $50 to get the right stuff before it costs you thousands
How do you hide the nails for the last one
I'm curious why you wouldn't use screws for this or any other part of a roof. Surely screws would increase the ability of the shingles to stay on compared to nails, right?
While I appreciate the video, I wouldn’t even use this method for the 4/12 roof I’m currently shingling for the chicken coop I just built! And yes, I’m using architectural shingles I sourced from the local habitat for humanity store. Special trip to Lowe’s for some close matching 3 tab shingles for the peak and ridge vent.
Never seen homemade caps!
My roofer did my ridge caps the same way with these laminate shingles. He did not use the standard and "nicer looking" "Hip & Ridge" Shingles. Are the hip and ridge shingles just for looks? Do both last just as long? Would you always recommend using the same laminate shingles for the ridge like on your video? Because I have read that you shouldn't but they don't say why.
Hi! Thank you for visiting my channel! You can use the same material just like in my video and with my experience they do the job just as well as long as they are nailed correctly. In my area there not much heavy winds. You should be ok 👍🏽
@@FixThisHouse Thanks!
Thank you 🙏🏽
No that is not correct at all don't listen to this . I've been a roofer for 16+ years find a professional near you it will save you money in the end
Paul Koester what’s not correct about it?
So glad I came across this video. You showed great tips. I have a question for you. How would you install composition over the 2x6 fascia board on a small shed? Would like to give it a cottage dollhouse look at the same time protect the wood a bit longer.
Thank you very simple and easy to understand, your a good teacher. Blessings
Thank you so much 😊!
I dont know why used to work construction Union Labors roofing makes my brain lock up I have no clue why. I need to repair some shingles on my rood that blew off I had a new roof put on in 2018 I went up the other day and tried to pry up the old shingles to remove the nails to put in new shingle and as I went along more shingles broke and it was in the after noon when it was warm before long I had 6 shingles removed because everyone was cracking and then I got up to the ridge cap and stopped I could not get one shingle removed with it cracking no matter how careful I I know basic carpentry and can work on boats and build muscle cars but roofing makes my brain lock up for some reason have no clue why
There's no tar strip on those caps so the wind will eventually pull them off in the right wind storm
Bro there's way more wrong with this video than that. But I guess being good is just when you've done something the wrong way enough times.
The tar is on the front bottom of each shingle not the middle like three tab..
And you might add "architectural style" to the title of your video to make it obvious that you have our answer
Shouldn't the space between the sheathing at the apex require only the ridge vent shingles and not the last row? Wouldn't two layers of shingles compromise venting?
There’s no vent on this ridge
Why would you not buy capping? And i think you are cutting off to much off the back of shingle......each cap only needs 2 nails but 4 hold it down if you only remove a sliver while cutting your capping.
If it's wrong than where do we get the 3 tab roof capping at? There nowhere to be found in the section that the arch shingles are at in the store. And trying to find the same color is nearly impossible, especially 3 tabs! In the end all we got for choice is the architectural shingles! The ridge caps they make specifically for this that are bulky & big are the first thing of the roof that deteriorate & go decades before the shingles see the end of their life! Or is that the selling point them saleguys implement to homeowners thats it's time for a new roof scam?
Their thickness and composition will differ and will not seal the roof ridge properly. Additionally, cutting and refining shingles will loosen the granules and affect their overall integrity and durability.
Architectural shingles not only interwoven at the valleys but then used as ridge caps, lmfao if this roof isn’t already leaking like hell, it will be soon.
I personally would not taper each piece of cap because of more room for wind to get under from the side, and very time consuming!
😂 and thats why your ridge cap would look like crap and not be done right🤷♂️
Use 3 tap or real ridge cap.
You should use 3 tab for this or actual cap shingles this isn't recommended.
Architectural shingles are not meant to use them as cap homie
never cut the face of the shingle. the knife will be ruined. always cut on the back of the shingle.
Thank you for the tip! 🙏🏽😊👍🏽
They make more blades you know... I go through about 3 blades per roof.
Lol DIY if you want leaks in a year.
Man I almost had a stroke watching this crap 😂 just call a roofer and offer a case of beer and BBQ if you want supervision.
Now tell us how to do it properly
Spend the 40 bucks for a bundle of real cap, or you can be like the hack roofers and at least buy a bundle of matching three tabs and cut it into cap, it's good enough but I would just buy the bundle of ridge cap. Using dimensionals for cap is gonna void your warranty and it's gonna leak as I'm SURE you're gonna break your double laminations zone bending it like that.
*The more you know*
@@felipebarcelo811 What in flying hell is going on with that valley at 9:04? Shingling isn't something you do "for fun". it's a very serious trade that ultimately protects the entire home & its occupants. absolutely ridiculous
Huh? Just buy caps or 3 tab shingles the same colour. This is so wrong i dont know what else to say
Why do you do that?
Anyone who uses architectural shingle as ridge cap should not be allowed on a roof
Exactly
This is not correct - buy 3 tab shingles cut to make ridge cap
WTF are you cutting the stone side with a normal knife?
I NEVER see roofers using Architectural shingles for the ridge cap, I see them only using 3 Taps.
If there is any place for a nail gun it is doing ridge caps.
Take this video down bro they make what's called hip and ridge or get three tab shingles cause what your doing those seals will fail
This guy has no clue what he's doing 😳 😂
Then make your own video and show us.
Finish product looks terrible can tell he doesn’t do this for a living
Please remove this video from RUclips. It is absolutely 💯 the wrong way to install ridge caps.
Any DIYer doing this will have to pay a professional like me sooner rather than later to fix this. Hopefully it won’t be after you have several thousand $$$ of interior damage.
Horrible
