  • Foundational aspects of ridge cap installation are covered in this "How to Install Ridge Cap" video. This is a perfect video for a do-it-yourself homeowner and roof installer alike. One of the complicated areas while installing a ridge cap is where the ridge shingles terminate into "slope C" above two valleys. In this video we will illustrate how to do that plus much more.

    Thanks for the video. I just had 20 feet of ridge cap blow off my roof in a tornado. I installed the roof myself 5 years ago; that being my first ever roofing project (owens corning duration). What you showed certainly was not my nailing schedule. I put one on each side like my shop teacher showed me back in '91. And the whole piece lifted off pulling the shingle thru the nail and depositing the shingles in the front yard in one piece. ill be on the roof saturday learning my lesson

    Great video on ridge cap. I have a section of roof that is part of an A-frame with a very steep angle and wanted to know what you would recommend for a shingle (or other type of cover). I think it is 120deg angle and roughly 40ft long. The current shingle is about 18 years old and they used a standard shingle that has held up fine, but not ideal. Thanks again for your help.

      You may want to install a strip of ice and water shield over the ridge before installing the ridge cap. We will generally overlap one of the slopes of shingles over the ridge to provide additional protection in the event of a hailstorm or bad weather.

    Never understood layered layered ridge capping, but it seems to work. My issue is, shingles rely on slope to shed water, but this is a horizontal surface and any wind is going to blow underneath the cap. I'm not saying anything is wrong with the job, but I wouldn't mind some feedback

    • @byron2521
      @byron2521 5 лет назад

      Just guessing, I don't know for sure. But, I bet you are supposed to run the lap edge so it is facing away from prevailing wind? Curious, what do you suggest? Not being a smarty-pants, I really want to know some suggestions. I am replacing my own roof ridge. That is why I am here. I'm guessing there is a better way. Most houses in my area seem to use this shingle ridge method. A solid ridge piece (aluminum, rubber, or vinyl) seems like it might be better. The shingle ridge is likely just done for aesthetics to look consistent with the rest of the roof. I don't care about that crap.... I just don't want the roof to leak.

    • @wikimon
      @wikimon 5 лет назад +1

      if the shingle is flat, wind can get underneath it. if it is curved, it's naturally MUCH stiffer against wind lifting it
      take a piece of paper and curve it down then try to lift up the front edge. take another flat piece and try and lift the front edge
      you will notice a huge difference

    • @IntegrityRoofingandPainting
      @IntegrityRoofingandPainting  6 лет назад +2

      Hello Brusier, sorry that you were impacted by the hurricane. The ridge cap shingles can be be reused, however you will need to apply several quarter size dabs of plastic cement. The old sealant will not reactivate. The new plastic cement will bond the ridge cap together.

    • @bruisermccann
      @bruisermccann 6 лет назад

      Integrity Roofing and Painting is that plastic cement like for building models or rubber cement?

    • @IntegrityRoofingandPainting

    Hello. I am not a construction guy, but watching what's going on next door is worrying. My neighbors have a new build going on. It's been raining. The inside of the house looks like a lake. The roofing plywood (Weyerhaueser Gold) is soaked. The black roofing paper is wet and wrinkled. When the guy works, tiles are going down on top of wet paper. No edge tiling is being used at all. It's not my project and I should just probably butt out, but I feel my young neighbors are not getting the best job for the money. Is there an email address where I could send a few pics? If you can confirm my suspicions, then at least I can warn them. Thanks.

    Aren't you supposed to hit the tar strip with the nail? I heard that's where the nail should go as it's stronger for windy conditions it'll hold better and it also acts as an adhesive for the shingle above it.

    • @jessemclaughlin9680
      @jessemclaughlin9680 4 года назад

      NO, you're actually supposed to go bellow the tar line because then it will also penetrate the shingle below, effectively doubling your fastener count per shingle. Nailing in or above the tar line is weaker and will void warranty. The guy in the video was nailing on the wrong side of the tar line.

    • @scumbaggo

Also that looks to be an 8-10 pitch which is more than walkable with asphalt on it. Perhaps critiquing a job people should know more about what they are pointing out the wrongs in.
