If interested I would recommend the Tops Moccasin Ranger (my most used HD blade). Aside from the rear guard being a bit annoying while choked back chopping its Esee 6 sized while closer to Esee 5 in weight with your SP8’s geometry. After 10+ years mines stripped and bead blasted. I’ve polished the bevels and convexed the edge multiple times. Awesome looking blade...performs much like a Fallkniven A1.
Appreciate your review, and agree the sheath is crap, but although I'm normally a fan of smoother handles really liked the look of the Rocky Mountain Tread handle on this one. Not sure why, it's all subjective and personal preference as you say, it just looks secure. If it doesn't generate hotspots would be my sole concern. Love the leather sheath, and have to try and find something similar for mine. Thanks for the helpful review! 👍
I didn’t want the Rocky Mountain handle and waited for the latest release. Think I got it the end of last year. Mine started rusting everywhere just days out of the package before I even used it. I hated the slick coating on the rounded spine, my thumb kept slipping off and I missed not being to scrape with the spine.
Almost got the regular micarta version but they were out of stock. Still ordered the rocky mountain tread as that was all I could find. I think they must have discontinued them which sucks. I think tops' main issue is just having crappy sheaths and people dont want to pay extra for a better sheath, and its probably affecting their sales significantly. Tops needs to get their head in the game and offer appropriate sheaths for their knife models.
@peterbiltknifeguy I'd pay more for a better sheath. Better to pay 25 or 50 bucks extra to get it right the first time than pay 150 for a custom sheath.
@@InumanNa Can't mention the site on RUclips because they'll immediately delete the post, but will just say CKW. They have both the standard smooth handle and this Rocky Mountain Tread handle for at least $40 less than anywhere else I've found. Hope this post isn't nuked...! Good luck.
I’m not a fan of Tops. I’d rather have the Ontario, or the esee. My experience with Tops hasn’t been good. I don’t mind re-grinding a $57-70 knife. When I’m spending $150+ on a knife I expect something for my money. Just saying made in America isn’t doing it anymore. I really don’t understand why knives have suddenly increased so much yet technically they are easier to make.
@@peterbiltknifeguy grind was bad then it rolled. The other knife was BoB it chipped really bad just shaving bark. Traded that one still have the little scandi one that wasn't a scandi. It's really just a big wedge.
Thanks for this installment. It is a aesthetically appealing knife!
It sure is. It’s definitely top of my list

No problem.
Glad you like the sheath. I was worried about the RMT also. So far it’s been awesome
The Longhorn Bowie Is Mumma Bear’s favorite knife.
That sheath looks a lot like hers.
I prefer the Prather War Bowie myself.
Might have to pick up one if these…not a huge fan of Bowies, but this is actually one of my favorite looking bowies I’ve seen
Yeah. It’s called a Bowie. But without the traditional shape. It’s a great knife

Mine did that too.. wasn't my first tops knife but started rusting within a month while other knives in the same room had no issues
Good take and review of that knife....I really like it especially the size and blade shape....Good stuff....

I agree. Or at least offer a better sheath for a few extra bucks

Awesome knife and custom sheath Kevin. Very good preliminary review and general discussion. Good stuff man!🔥🔪👊
