Can you make a video on the difference between black ceramic and white ceramic blades, apparently black ceramic goes through a extra processing step that makes it extra strong. A black (HIP) blade is made out of black zirconium oxide and offers extra durability. This type of blade goes through an extra firing process called a "hot-isostatic press," creating a tighter weave between the ceramic molecules, thus creating a tougher blade.
I just realized I have what Walmart calls their "Ozark Trail Tan Flip Opening knife". I paid $10 for this years ago after seeing a video from the channel 8541 Tactical here on RUclips. It looks like he has pulled the video down as I don't see it anymore. But I can ship this one to you for testing if you want? It has been opened from the package but I don't believe I have ever sharpened it and I've only used it for opening the tape of delivery boxes. Which hasn't been many... Funny thing is I just started carrying it the other day but the sharp edges and bulk of it make it uncomfortable for pocket carry. Just last night I was thinking about taking a file and softening the edges to make it more comfortable but I haven't done this yet. You're more than welcome to try it out?

I'll totally second that! Glad you are back, glad you are producing videos of that quality. It always makes me more motivated to touch up a bunch of our kitchen knives I sharpen mostly chisels and plane irons, idea and goal are the same, technique is very different 😁 (so I suck at knife sharpening, but I'm slowly improving, thanks to the videos)
Ozark hit a marketing homerun with this knife. Heat treat the first couple batches properly, and once the positive reviews have flooding the market, they can sell you 5CRs and nobody would believe it isn't D2.
idk.. anyone that has ever sharpened a d2 blade might. not many know how to sharpen them without a guided fool proof method anymore. my experience with d2 has been it's a nightmare to sharpen. i've tried normal stones and even a a belt sander, work sharp. neither seemed to phase it. if they have zero experience with good d2, they'll be fooled for sure, no doubt. then people will think all d2 is trash metal. truth is, it's pretty decent. best edge retention for the money imo.
not a knife guy I guess youtube recommended this as I hike but I can tell you this is true for almost everything electronic TV, computer parts monitors gaming consoles they all do that, this is why for example on tvs they have super vague descriptions for example brightness UP TO 10'000 or whatever it's to allow them to downgrade down the line once the reviews are out it's especially bad for computer monitors as sometimes they source the sceen panel from a completely other manufacturer which means you're buying a completely different product, I also worked with a PCB designer (computer motherboard, smarthphone etc..) and he had engineering classes on how to design the best possible product and then lower the quality of individual components so the product lasts just enough for the warranty, they actually teach that >< this is why modern cars are so bad because they calculated their life expectancy wrong
I've had one since day 1 and bought several more for history's sake. The one I use has been a good knife for universal use. I guess I got a good batch. Not having one would make me an unfulfilled collector, and having a couple more still in the wrapper is even better. Funny part is I gave one to my Grandson and have a carry one, 2 brand new ones and all 4 were paid for by selling a few others above list to VERY eager buyers.
The great thing about knife steel claims is that so few people have access to an Optical Emission Spectrometer so claims can almost never be looked into.

D2 can be wrong in a particular case, but with the cheap steels like this you want rough “microserrated” apex basically turning it into a micro-scale saw. It won’t hold the apex with the “mirror finish”. Just a different league, different tool, different approach to do things.

@ that guys gonna do an updated test this Saturday. Even then, it doesn’t rule out the findings that Outdoors55 found on his blade. Having differing results may be an indication of inconsistent quality of product
As a retired tool maker, I used D2 for stamping dies. Proper hardening and draw back is critical. The more drawn back after hardening the less hard and brittle it becomes, so tempering is a choice between these two choices. Identical tool steels with different tempers makes all the difference.
Ill add, not all D2 steel is the same. Its quality can vary wildly depending on who made it 51crv4 would be a much better knife steel for the same price

Several months ago, I bought four of the $9.97 orange Ozark Trail knives. Once I treated it with Japanese camellia oil, the action became wonderfully smooth. You should do edge testing on ceiling tiles and the tests will be much quicker. A standard utility blade only makes about 5 cuts before its so dull that it just rips the tile. So only 10 cuts per blade. They will absolutely kill a pocket knife real quick. Probably more challenging for the blade and will make the test less time consuming

I must have gotten lucky. I bought one of the first ones out. And have really enjoyed it. I strapped it after every use. Just like I do with all of my knives. And it's been doing just fine
I bought 10 right at first. Been using most of them. They're doing well. Not 20cv Kershaw good (one of my other common carried knives), but what I expect from d2
I think the steel on the Ozark Trail knife is D1.95. The marketing and legal teams of Ozark Trail got together and rounded it up to D2, slapped the price on it, and let it rip in the Empire of Cheap (USA). This is a good lesson in value versus price of goods. Nice work!
I'd like to see you disassemble this knife and re-heat treat and re-temper it according to D2 steel specs and then try again to see if that changes anything.

Great video. They’re not making this knife for us though.. my Dad carried a dull Chinese made ripoff of a Buck 110 for years at work and loved it. It still split tape and tore cardboard which was “cutting” to him. To someone like Dad, this would’ve been a great deal and I think that’s who they ultimately made this for. People who’ve never had a good, sharp knife. The curious thing is branding it as D2 and not “aviation grade stainless” or something ridiculous. Naming D2 as the material really seems like an attempt to attract knife guys and it certainly worked. But again, great video and very interesting. I’d love someone to be able to test the steel to see what it’s made of, it can’t be D2 surely.
I've bought several knives off Amazon, none of them very expensive. I am an old fart cake eater that never spent a minute in the woods for work. I like knives. I buy knives because of a specific feature on that particular knife. I've learned how to sharpen them to a hair shaving tolerance but nothing more. My last knife purchase was the DAOFENG EDC Black Lightweight Folding Pocket Knife. As I said cake eater. I bought this knife as an EDC. It came razor sharp and stayed that way for most of the cake eating things I needed AND it weighed 1.4 oz!!! An old man with 4-6 oz of steel in his pants is going to be picking his pants up off the floor multiple times a day. So specific knives for specific purposes. Works for me.
Mine was pretty good, I bought it in the first batch when it first hit. Mine only dulled to a working edge because I tried to cut a fiberglass pole with it lol.. it's still worked great for hacking down small branches and cutting a few things here or there... Possible the next batch had some issues, not sure.
So this is WEIRD. I did my edge retention testing on 3 of them. The first one on the factory edge took 7 hours of cutting cardboard to reach total devastation. It wasn't tearing and rolling the cardboard until the end of that run. Putting a new 18° per side if I remember right pushed it out to 8 hours. The second factory edge took 6 hours. On a 15° per side edge it took a bit over 4 hours. The reviews and results of these things have been all over the place. The live streams where I did the testing are all up, there are receipts. We DID count about 30 minutes worth of cuts at about 900 cuts averaged to 6 inches. I DO go to absolute devastation where it hits 550+ on the edge tester.
Took a brief look at the stream and realized its cutting along the grain of single wall cardboard which is the equivalent of cutting 2mm thick paper. Not impressed and not a point of data in my opinion. One cannot compare results unless equal tests are performed. Try cutting against the grain of single or double wall cardboard with the ozark trail and then report back please.
@@knivesiguesslet me rephrase my initial statement and I apologize for how it sounded. I checked out your stream and really liked the style and setup! I was enjoying the cutting, the table, the lights, and the content. Once I broke the enjoyable hypnosis I focused on the test itself. I would be interested to see a cut test where you go “against the grain” of the cardboard rather than alone. Not saying what you did is invalid. Just looking to compare similar data points.
I got an old Sheffield $5 knife from walmart YEARS ago. I still have that thing and it's still in great shape. I use it all the time. I've used this thing as a hammer before cause it was $5 and it has an all metal body and such. Still works great, has never come lose or anything. 5 bucks can't beat it. Though I do love my more expensive knives too.
It's fair to complain about a $10 knife that performs badly when the same brand offers a dozen models of $6 knives that perform badly. 🙂 (To be honest, I like the cheap Ozark Trail knives. I bought a ton of them back when they were $4.99. They're fun to buy and great to keep in places where you might need a knife for occasional light use.)
I have the perfect place to keep a knife that I might need for occasional use: It’s called my right front pocket, and there’s only room for one knife in there. People who know how to use and maintain tools seem to always prefer to have the best quality tools they can buy. I would much rather have one good knife than 15 junk knives.
I travel for work and lose knives all the time. So I only buy cheap below $10 knives. Either I set them down somewhere or TSA gets them or someone borrowed it. They always end up missing. For me they get pretty light use and I don’t mind touching up the edge at the end of the day.

Usually when friends ask me for a recommendation of a budget blade, I point them to Spyderco's Byrd knives. $25-30, super slicey, and they hold up. Yeah, it's a backlock and you don't get the fun fidget factor, but... if you're talking a budget knife that works, you don't need the extras.
I have a Byrd and one of the Ozark Trail D2 knives. Maybe I just got lucky but the Ozark Trail one is great. I carry it when I want something a little lighter and more discreet than the Byrd.
@@chrimony That's gonna depend on how budget you want your budget knife to be. CJRB's Pyrite Light is 29 bucks and is arguably the best EDC knife at that price point that also has a high fidget factor. Button lock + thumb studs, AR-RPM9 steel (stainless, pretty decent qualities), 3.34 inch long wharncliffe blade, and it weighs 2.75 ounces; it's going to be hard to beat, even if you stack it up against some more expensive knives. If you're fine sacrificing a little fidget factor, Civivi's Mini Praxis is also pretty good and is basically the same price. Liner lock + flipper tab (no thumb studs), D2 steel (not stainless, but will probably hold its edge longer than AR-RPM9), 2.98 inch long drop point blade, and it weighs 2.77 ounces; it flicks open nicely and liner locks can be disengaged with one hand, but liner locks aren't as finger safe and limit how smoothly it closes (since you have to move your thumb out of the way). Obviously, your options increase the more money you put into them, but that's also blurring the lines of what "budget knife" means. Personally, I'd call any knife below 50 bucks budget, but I know other people who would put a hard cutoff at like 20-25; it's all relative to what you expect to get out of it.
I got 4 of these to open delivery boxes. Very happy with the purchase. To chop up cardboard I use a cordless portable reciprocating saw with a Bosch 2330057 Sabre Saw Blade. Works like magic.
I think most people would be surprised if all they did was blind tests with blades. They may only notice a real difference when trying to put an edge on the blade again.

Not a folding knife guy, but I have an ozark trail fixed blade that i carried temporarily after losing a good knife, and as far as being there when I needed it for daily use, it does everything a good knife can do but hold an edge. Any knife is a good enough knife if you sharpen it every day.
I don't agree with your last statement. Even with my generic 1 dollar kitchen knife retains its shaving edge for at least 3 weeks. A knife that has to be sharpened everyday sounds like it's a terrible knife

I bought a couple, don't regret them. I'm not a knife guy, never really thought about the blade steel. "Stainless?" Sounds fine. I love the crossbar lock, never knew that was a thing. So nice and light that I'm carrying a knife regularly for the first time. As a gateway drug this thing is a winner. And now we newbies get to find out what's better so thanks for the learnin' up.
If you want to follow up on this: See if there is a company nearby that can do spark discharge spectroscopy. D2 is supposed to have 11 to 13 wt% (percentage by weight) chromium, 1.4-1.6 wt% carbon, 0.7-1.2 wt% molybdenum and 0,5-1,1 wt% vanadium. (And a little bit of manganese and silicon as well) Any decent lab with spark OES will be able to quickly tell if the blade is D2 or not.
@tacticalcenter8658 How can you tell? How do you know for certain? I know I can't tell, not by just looking at a video of it. But I am a metallurgist and I do know that, say, skimping on the vanadium in that alloy would definitely diminish edge retention. All we know is that it hits 60 HRC. If the manufacturer used type 440C instead of D2, it could hit 60 HRC too. But 440C has no vanadium...

So do Volkswagen, Samsung, Siemens, General Motors, Intel, Dell, Caterpillar, Sony, Toyota, BMW, LG, Bridgestone, HP... "Made in China" in and of itself isn't a valid reason to say it's of poor quality.
Love this video. I fully understand the value of quality heat treating and good knife steels. I understand that a good steel can be rendered virtually useless by bad heat treating. I have good quality knives, that I love and use. I also often carry a cheap $6 Ozark Trail knife in my pocket in addition to a decent make and model of knife (I don't have any knives over $70 in my collection), my good knives are roughly $35-$55 knives. I carry an el cheapo to use when I don't want my better knife to get...? You are right about this knife, but I am still gonna get one as soon as I can find one, because it looks good and I like to have a trashy knife handy. Call me crazy, but it is also blaze orange, love it!
@@OUTDOORS55 I've seen plenty of people who bought this as a truck knife and not as an EDC, so a fixed blade would work just as well. I know $10 is cheap enough that it is almost disposable for a lot of knife collectors, but if it's junk it doesn't mean it's a good deal. IMO, if you want to get a beater knife that is so cheap you don't need to worry about what you do with it, a cheap fixed blade or even a utility knife seems like it would be a better choice for the vast majority of use cases.

@@robertmarks2379My experience suggests that most people hating on well-known value knives do so because they feel a subconscious need to justify the hundreds or thousands they've spent on high-end knives that. Seriously, a lot of these people just can't admit to themselves that they're buying fancy boutique knives because they're cool, and not because they actually need whatever extra performance you can get with them over something like a Mora, Opinel, Victorinox, Buck Bantam, etc. I get it. I was in that same camp for a while. I enjoy the very few knives I've bought in the last few years all the more now that I'm not doing mental gymnastics to convince myself it's not just a fun thing to buy
I would like to give my opinion if I may. I trust this man. I like his style very much who wouldn't. He's giving us a lot of valuable information. I'm very grateful that he does so. I have acquired more skill and knowledge because of him and I pass it on. What I've learned from him has helped me help others or sharpen their knives. I should not say this but last year and part of this year I was fighting a DUI and I won. It took time and I lost my commercial license for a little while, I was homeless and I almost lost everything. One thing that kept me above water, made me welcome in people's homes, put money in my pocket during that hard time was that I was paid to sharpen knives or people would give me food and a place to stay if I sharpened all of their knives. Or they would take me out to lunch at expensive restaurants where I met more of their friends and more people. So the proof about this man is in the results and how he helps us and teaches us. Sometimes in the midst of worry it feels good to have a nice hobby and like I said above I trust this guy, and that's hard to find man.
Bought a couple when they came out and they have literally been amazing, especially for the price. The knife works for what 80% of knife users need on a daily basis. this is, for sure, more of a light-use knife, but that is okay; most knives are. the knife world has gone insane with prices, so hopefully, this will wake up manufacturers that they are charging way too much! People are not buying this to sit on shelf like most knife nerds... they want it because it is a basic tool that is not 50-100$. great for a truck knife or a travel knife, which is the point. comparing it to a 40$ knife makes no sense, it is 4x the price

If you are using a knife as a beater meaning to cut a can, romove ails, as a prybar then ofourse its best to use cheapie and thats why its best to have 2 knives ith you one as a praybar and other for actully cutting non metal things.

After a fun trip to Smokey Mountain Knife Works and buying some pricey knives- my everyday carry is a $10 Smith & Wesson m&p folder I found near the checkout counter. If I lose it, my feelings aren’t hurt. Yet it does all I need in an every day carry knife.
I bought one of these to replace my other cheap knife that i used for cutting boxes and straps ect... at work. This was several years ago. I still carry it and use it everyday. Mine has been great 👍.
I've seen people get much better results so most definitely it's just a roll of dice when buying this knife, when they're producing it this cheap there's definitely no room for any QC. I mean maxlvledc got 10 of them and 3 had warped blades lol.
I bought twelve 1st gen's & nine 2nd gen's. I kept a few of them & gave away a couple. Been using my 1st gen daily for many months & have zero issues so far 👍 Oh, and I'm selling my extras for $20 each.

I have personally Rockwell tested mine and I was getting a range between 60-64HRC following ASTM E18, I was shocked. Those hardness measurements were done through out the blade, not just in one spot either.
You always talk about those different steels, I would love a video of you explaining the difference between all those and the applications. I would also love a video about EDC knives to start with.
I bought a $20 Camillus folding knife with D2 steel that I use for fishing. After four years of use, cutting fishing line, sometimes steel wire for rigs, I haven't had to sharpen it yet.
My 2 most used knives.. a Camillus DAO style 3-inch blade that came in a camping pack (4 years in service) , and my cheap Ozark Trail (6 months in service). You won't find me without them. Buy cheap and sharpen often! If you need to cut paper, get scissors 🤣🤣🤣
Thanks to your channel I started sharpening knives and found an amazing difference in material types. The high chromium steel takes many times longer to grind due to its toughness. I found that low toughness high hardness steel is easier to grind but seems to start out with chips and needs more reprofiling, but holds and edge better when used on low impact tasks on materials that don't have as much hidden hard bits. My takeaway is that this is false advertising and the company folder shop after dumping a bunch of blades made from mediocre, excess steel they got from another job.
I bought one the first week they were released. The blade was sharp and decent. The pivot was a POS. And the steel liners were very flexible. The pivot showed wear after a week of limited use (yes, I took it apart and looked at the worn pivot. The blade had side to side play due to that crap pivot, the overly large pivot hole in the blade, and those flexing liners. The only good thing I can say about this knife is that I sold it for 2.5 times what I paid for it! I used that money to buy the Civivi Zizzle for $25 from WM. The Wugout was an okay knife for $10. The Zizzle is just a really good knife!

To be fair, you did compare d2 to 14c.. Which in my opinion is the best budget steel. I know d2 On paper is supposed to outperform sanvik but In every real world test 14c28n Is the budget magnacut
12:14 im actually looking for a ~10$ knife that can kinda handle that type of abuse. Of course I'm not expecting it to stay sharp. I'm fine with resharpening I just want something that can be easily replaced after I abused it too much and it had a catastrophic failure or I lost it or something. Would just be nice if it was at least at the quality level of the 9$ Amazon knife you showed and stayed at that price.
Picked one up today since Wallyworld had a gazillion of them in stock for the holiday season. I'm impressed with the overall fit and finish. The axis lock makes for a really snappy almost assisted action, the grinds are pretty even, and it came out of the package shave sharp. It definitely has $10 knife scales but the texture is surprisingly grippy. I'll probably give it to one of my boys to show them why I spend so much on mine. Pass on the same disease my dad gave me. 😂
I have a benchmade bugout, and I just bought 5 of these for $5 each. I cant tell you how many times I've been sick because I thought I lost my bugout... all my son in-laws got these for stocking stuffers this year and it is now my every day carry knife.
Well, it's interesting that you've gotten bad results with it. I've had the exact opposite experience. Right out of the packaging super sharp, held an edge longer than my 14c raccoon (by a lot), sharpens easily, and still keeps a good edge after plenty of abuse and sharpening. I liked it so much I bought a bunch more and gave them to all my friends. They have had similar experiences. So over 12 individual knives, I haven't found a stinker.

At the end of the day, it's an amazing fidget toy for me. The action is really loose and smooth and I can flick it back and forth constantly. It's got a better action, in my humble opinion, than a bunch of the more expensive ones I got. This knife got me obsessed with axis locks, don't ask how many I've bought since I picked up the OT-D2. XD

Maybe he doesn't feel like spending the mental concentration to sharpen every single time. Maybe the fixed angle system is just faster for him. His value as a youtuber creator, and as a human doesn't hinge on how often he uses whetstones. Hes definitely no sell out. My first car was a stick shift, but I buy automatics now because it suits my lifestyle now. Same idea man.
Mine seemed to do pretty good holding an edge in cardboard. But I actually had a failure of the little plastic "bearing cage" washer, which ended up splitting, and loosening up the action. I did tighten the pivot screw up just enough to take out the little bit of blade play shortly after I got the knife though.
I've had my Ozark for over 6 months and it has handled well so far. I ended up buying another one a little over 3 months ago. I appreciate your videos and am a subscriber, but I still like my Ozark Trail, $10 folding knife. No apologies.
I tried several times to buy this knife, even placing orders when it was in stock on three different occasions without success. So the next time it came in stock I ordered 4 (one to keep, 3 as gifts if the one I was keeping held up). Well, it doesn't seem like mine is holding the edge as well as I'd hoped (though I did manage to dye the scales a nice shade of red). I'd be willing to donate the unopened 3 to a channel for side by side QC comparison and testing. I'm especially interested in seeing if they are still D2 and what the hardness is. I'm also curious how hard it would be to redo the heat treat or if it's a lost cause.

A black (HIP) blade is made out of black zirconium oxide and offers extra durability. This type of blade goes through an extra firing process called a "hot-isostatic press," creating a tighter weave between the ceramic molecules, thus creating a tougher blade.
I just realized I have what Walmart calls their "Ozark Trail Tan Flip Opening knife". I paid $10 for this years ago after seeing a video from the channel 8541 Tactical here on RUclips. It has been opened from the package but I don't believe I have ever sharpened it and I've only used it for opening the tape of delivery boxes. Which hasn't been many...
Funny thing is I just started carrying it the other day but the sharp edges and bulk of it make it uncomfortable for pocket carry. Just last night I was thinking about taking a file and softening the edges to make it more comfortable but I haven't done this yet.

I sharpen mostly chisels and plane irons, idea and goal are the same, technique is very different 😁 (so I suck at knife sharpening, but I'm slowly improving, thanks to the videos)
Ozark hit a marketing homerun with this knife. Heat treat the first couple batches properly, and once the positive reviews have flooding the market, they can sell you 5CRs and nobody would believe it isn't D2.
idk.. anyone that has ever sharpened a d2 blade might. not many know how to sharpen them without a guided fool proof method anymore. my experience with d2 has been it's a nightmare to sharpen. i've tried normal stones and even a a belt sander, work sharp. neither seemed to phase it. if they have zero experience with good d2, they'll be fooled for sure, no doubt. then people will think all d2 is trash metal. truth is, it's pretty decent. best edge retention for the money imo.
Ozark is a brand owned by Walmart. They may even order the knives from multiple asian manufacturers.
not a knife guy I guess youtube recommended this as I hike but I can tell you this is true for almost everything electronic TV, computer parts monitors gaming consoles they all do that, this is why for example on tvs they have super vague descriptions for example brightness UP TO 10'000 or whatever it's to allow them to downgrade down the line once the reviews are out it's especially bad for computer monitors as sometimes they source the sceen panel from a completely other manufacturer which means you're buying a completely different product, I also worked with a PCB designer (computer motherboard, smarthphone etc..) and he had engineering classes on how to design the best possible product and then lower the quality of individual components so the product lasts just enough for the warranty, they actually teach that >< this is why modern cars are so bad because they calculated their life expectancy wrong
I've had one since day 1 and bought several more for history's sake. The one I use has been a good knife for universal use. I guess I got a good batch. Not having one would make me an unfulfilled collector, and having a couple more still in the wrapper is even better. Funny part is I gave one to my Grandson and have a carry one, 2 brand new ones and all 4 were paid for by selling a few others above list to VERY eager buyers.

The great thing about knife steel claims is that so few people have access to an Optical Emission Spectrometer so claims can almost never be looked into.

D2 can be wrong in a particular case, but with the cheap steels like this you want rough “microserrated” apex basically turning it into a micro-scale saw. It won’t hold the apex with the “mirror finish”. Just a different league, different tool, different approach to do things.

As a retired tool maker, I used D2 for stamping dies. Proper hardening and draw back is critical. The more drawn back after hardening the less hard and brittle it becomes, so tempering is a choice between these two choices. Identical tool steels with different tempers makes all the difference.
Ill add, not all D2 steel is the same. Its quality can vary wildly depending on who made it

Several months ago, I bought four of the $9.97 orange Ozark Trail knives. Once I treated it with Japanese camellia oil, the action became wonderfully smooth. You should do edge testing on ceiling tiles and the tests will be much quicker. A standard utility blade only makes about 5 cuts before its so dull that it just rips the tile. So only 10 cuts per blade. They will absolutely kill a pocket knife real quick. Probably more challenging for the blade and will make the test less time consuming
It also makes it harder to distinguish quality.

I think the steel on the Ozark Trail knife is D1.95. The marketing and legal teams of Ozark Trail got together and rounded it up to D2, slapped the price on it, and let it rip in the Empire of Cheap (USA). This is a good lesson in value versus price of goods. Nice work!

Great video. They’re not making this knife for us though.. my Dad carried a dull Chinese made ripoff of a Buck 110 for years at work and loved it. It still split tape and tore cardboard which was “cutting” to him. To someone like Dad, this would’ve been a great deal and I think that’s who they ultimately made this for. People who’ve never had a good, sharp knife. The curious thing is branding it as D2 and not “aviation grade stainless” or something ridiculous. Naming D2 as the material really seems like an attempt to attract knife guys and it certainly worked.
But again, great video and very interesting. I’d love someone to be able to test the steel to see what it’s made of, it can’t be D2 surely.
I've bought several knives off Amazon, none of them very expensive. I am an old fart cake eater that never spent a minute in the woods for work. I like knives. I buy knives because of a specific feature on that particular knife. I've learned how to sharpen them to a hair shaving tolerance but nothing more. My last knife purchase was the DAOFENG EDC Black Lightweight Folding Pocket Knife. As I said cake eater. I bought this knife as an EDC. It came razor sharp and stayed that way for most of the cake eating things I needed AND it weighed 1.4 oz!!! An old man with 4-6 oz of steel in his pants is going to be picking his pants up off the floor multiple times a day. So specific knives for specific purposes. Works for me.

Mine was pretty good, I bought it in the first batch when it first hit. Mine only dulled to a working edge because I tried to cut a fiberglass pole with it lol.. it's still worked great for hacking down small branches and cutting a few things here or there... Possible the next batch had some issues, not sure.

So this is WEIRD. I did my edge retention testing on 3 of them. The first one on the factory edge took 7 hours of cutting cardboard to reach total devastation. It wasn't tearing and rolling the cardboard until the end of that run. Putting a new 18° per side if I remember right pushed it out to 8 hours. The second factory edge took 6 hours. On a 15° per side edge it took a bit over 4 hours. The reviews and results of these things have been all over the place. The live streams where I did the testing are all up, there are receipts. We DID count about 30 minutes worth of cuts at about 900 cuts averaged to 6 inches. I DO go to absolute devastation where it hits 550+ on the edge tester.

Took a brief look at the stream and realized its cutting along the grain of single wall cardboard which is the equivalent of cutting 2mm thick paper. Not impressed and not a point of data in my opinion. One cannot compare results unless equal tests are performed. Try cutting against the grain of single or double wall cardboard with the ozark trail and then report back please.

One unanswered question though is how it went double the normal time of all of my other D2 knives making the same cuts. Just weird.

I checked out your stream and really liked the style and setup! I was enjoying the cutting, the table, the lights, and the content. Once I broke the enjoyable hypnosis I focused on the test itself. I would be interested to see a cut test where you go “against the grain” of the cardboard rather than alone. Not saying what you did is invalid. Just looking to compare similar data points.
I got an old Sheffield $5 knife from walmart YEARS ago. I still have that thing and it's still in great shape. I use it all the time. I've used this thing as a hammer before cause it was $5 and it has an all metal body and such. Still works great, has never come lose or anything. 5 bucks can't beat it. Though I do love my more expensive knives too.
It's fair to complain about a $10 knife that performs badly when the same brand offers a dozen models of $6 knives that perform badly. 🙂 (To be honest, I like the cheap Ozark Trail knives. I bought a ton of them back when they were $4.99. They're fun to buy and great to keep in places where you might need a knife for occasional light use.)

Usually when friends ask me for a recommendation of a budget blade, I point them to Spyderco's Byrd knives. $25-30, super slicey, and they hold up. Yeah, it's a backlock and you don't get the fun fidget factor, but... if you're talking a budget knife that works, you don't need the extras.
A knife is a knife. it's just supposed to cut things.
I dunno, I really want a budget knife that works and is cool to flick open and close with one hand.
I have a Byrd and one of the Ozark Trail D2 knives. Maybe I just got lucky but the Ozark Trail one is great. I carry it when I want something a little lighter and more discreet than the Byrd.
@@chrimony That's gonna depend on how budget you want your budget knife to be. CJRB's Pyrite Light is 29 bucks and is arguably the best EDC knife at that price point that also has a high fidget factor. Button lock + thumb studs, AR-RPM9 steel (stainless, pretty decent qualities), 3.34 inch long wharncliffe blade, and it weighs 2.75 ounces; it's going to be hard to beat, even if you stack it up against some more expensive knives.
If you're fine sacrificing a little fidget factor, Civivi's Mini Praxis is also pretty good and is basically the same price. Liner lock + flipper tab (no thumb studs), D2 steel (not stainless, but will probably hold its edge longer than AR-RPM9), 2.98 inch long drop point blade, and it weighs 2.77 ounces; it flicks open nicely and liner locks can be disengaged with one hand, but liner locks aren't as finger safe and limit how smoothly it closes (since you have to move your thumb out of the way).
Obviously, your options increase the more money you put into them, but that's also blurring the lines of what "budget knife" means. Personally, I'd call any knife below 50 bucks budget, but I know other people who would put a hard cutoff at like 20-25; it's all relative to what you expect to get out of it.

I got 4 of these to open delivery boxes. Very happy with the purchase. To chop up cardboard I use a cordless portable reciprocating saw with a Bosch 2330057 Sabre Saw Blade. Works like magic.
If you want a good, cheap d2 steel knife, you should buy the ganzo ones.
They are real d2 with good heat treatment and costs around 25$
They are not a good heat treatment. Benchmade at 58rc outcuts ganxo d2 at 62rc.
I think most people would be surprised if all they did was blind tests with blades. They may only notice a real difference when trying to put an edge on the blade again.

Not a folding knife guy, but I have an ozark trail fixed blade that i carried temporarily after losing a good knife, and as far as being there when I needed it for daily use, it does everything a good knife can do but hold an edge.
Any knife is a good enough knife if you sharpen it every day.
I don't agree with your last statement. Even with my generic 1 dollar kitchen knife retains its shaving edge for at least 3 weeks. A knife that has to be sharpened everyday sounds like it's a terrible knife

I bought a couple, don't regret them. I'm not a knife guy, never really thought about the blade steel. "Stainless?" Sounds fine. I love the crossbar lock, never knew that was a thing. So nice and light that I'm carrying a knife regularly for the first time. As a gateway drug this thing is a winner. And now we newbies get to find out what's better so thanks for the learnin' up.
If you want to follow up on this: See if there is a company nearby that can do spark discharge spectroscopy. D2 is supposed to have 11 to 13 wt% (percentage by weight) chromium, 1.4-1.6 wt% carbon, 0.7-1.2 wt% molybdenum and 0,5-1,1 wt% vanadium. (And a little bit of manganese and silicon as well)
Any decent lab with spark OES will be able to quickly tell if the blade is D2 or not.
It's real d2. Import d2 is poorly heat treated across the board.

But I am a metallurgist and I do know that, say, skimping on the vanadium in that alloy would definitely diminish edge retention.
All we know is that it hits 60 HRC. If the manufacturer used type 440C instead of D2, it could hit 60 HRC too. But 440C has no vanadium...

Love this video. I fully understand the value of quality heat treating and good knife steels. I understand that a good steel can be rendered virtually useless by bad heat treating. I have good quality knives, that I love and use. I also often carry a cheap $6 Ozark Trail knife in my pocket in addition to a decent make and model of knife (I don't have any knives over $70 in my collection), my good knives are roughly $35-$55 knives. I carry an el cheapo to use when I don't want my better knife to get...?

I know $10 is cheap enough that it is almost disposable for a lot of knife collectors, but if it's junk it doesn't mean it's a good deal. IMO, if you want to get a beater knife that is so cheap you don't need to worry about what you do with it, a cheap fixed blade or even a utility knife seems like it would be a better choice for the vast majority of use cases.
Fixed blades are for men. Folders are for women.

I would like to give my opinion if I may. I trust this man. I like his style very much who wouldn't. He's giving us a lot of valuable information. I'm very grateful that he does so. I have acquired more skill and knowledge because of him and I pass it on. What I've learned from him has helped me help others or sharpen their knives. I should not say this but last year and part of this year I was fighting a DUI and I won. It took time and I lost my commercial license for a little while, I was homeless and I almost lost everything. One thing that kept me above water, made me welcome in people's homes, put money in my pocket during that hard time was that I was paid to sharpen knives or people would give me food and a place to stay if I sharpened all of their knives. Or they would take me out to lunch at expensive restaurants where I met more of their friends and more people. So the proof about this man is in the results and how he helps us and teaches us. Sometimes in the midst of worry it feels good to have a nice hobby and like I said above I trust this guy, and that's hard to find man.

Bought a couple when they came out and they have literally been amazing, especially for the price. The knife works for what 80% of knife users need on a daily basis. this is, for sure, more of a light-use knife, but that is okay; most knives are. the knife world has gone insane with prices, so hopefully, this will wake up manufacturers that they are charging way too much!
People are not buying this to sit on shelf like most knife nerds... they want it because it is a basic tool that is not 50-100$. great for a truck knife or a travel knife, which is the point. comparing it to a 40$ knife makes no sense, it is 4x the price

If you are using a knife as a beater meaning to cut a can, romove ails, as a prybar then ofourse its best to use cheapie and thats why its best to have 2 knives ith you one as a praybar and other for actully cutting non metal things.

You could get a handheld XRF, it would be very useful to determine steel alloy contents. Used ones are ~5k.

I have personally Rockwell tested mine and I was getting a range between 60-64HRC following ASTM E18, I was shocked. Those hardness measurements were done through out the blade, not just in one spot either.
I didn't include this in the video since it would just complicate things but i did get a handful of random 55hrc readings. 🙂
I don't have Rockwell tester but I have file set that goes up to 60hrc, and the 60hrc file skated across easily so I know it's definitely above 60

I bought a $20 Camillus folding knife with D2 steel that I use for fishing. After four years of use, cutting fishing line, sometimes steel wire for rigs, I haven't had to sharpen it yet.

My 2 most used knives.. a Camillus DAO style 3-inch blade that came in a camping pack (4 years in service) , and my cheap Ozark Trail (6 months in service). You won't find me without them. Buy cheap and sharpen often! If you need to cut paper, get scissors 🤣🤣🤣
I bought 4 of them and I love them. If you use it for its intended purpose and take care of it, it will last a lifetime. I gave them to my family.

Thanks to your channel I started sharpening knives and found an amazing difference in material types. The high chromium steel takes many times longer to grind due to its toughness. I found that low toughness high hardness steel is easier to grind but seems to start out with chips and needs more reprofiling, but holds and edge better when used on low impact tasks on materials that don't have as much hidden hard bits. My takeaway is that this is false advertising and the company folder shop after dumping a bunch of blades made from mediocre, excess steel they got from another job.
I bought one the first week they were released. The blade was sharp and decent. The pivot was a POS. And the steel liners were very flexible. The pivot showed wear after a week of limited use (yes, I took it apart and looked at the worn pivot. The blade had side to side play due to that crap pivot, the overly large pivot hole in the blade, and those flexing liners. The only good thing I can say about this knife is that I sold it for 2.5 times what I paid for it! I used that money to buy the Civivi Zizzle for $25 from WM. The Wugout was an okay knife for $10. The Zizzle is just a really good knife!

To be fair, you did compare d2 to 14c.. Which in my opinion is the best budget steel. I know d2 On paper is supposed to outperform sanvik but In every real world test 14c28n Is the budget magnacut

I have a D2 blade that I cannot put a 20* edge on and have it last....but at 24* it works great
12:14 im actually looking for a ~10$ knife that can kinda handle that type of abuse. Of course I'm not expecting it to stay sharp. I'm fine with resharpening I just want something that can be easily replaced after I abused it too much and it had a catastrophic failure or I lost it or something. Would just be nice if it was at least at the quality level of the 9$ Amazon knife you showed and stayed at that price.

Picked one up today since Wallyworld had a gazillion of them in stock for the holiday season.
I'm impressed with the overall fit and finish. The axis lock makes for a really snappy almost assisted action, the grinds are pretty even, and it came out of the package shave sharp. It definitely has $10 knife scales but the texture is surprisingly grippy.
I'll probably give it to one of my boys to show them why I spend so much on mine. Pass on the same disease my dad gave me. 😂

I have a benchmade bugout, and I just bought 5 of these for $5 each. I cant tell you how many times I've been sick because I thought I lost my bugout... all my son in-laws got these for stocking stuffers this year and it is now my every day carry knife.

Well, it's interesting that you've gotten bad results with it. I've had the exact opposite experience. Right out of the packaging super sharp, held an edge longer than my 14c raccoon (by a lot), sharpens easily, and still keeps a good edge after plenty of abuse and sharpening. I liked it so much I bought a bunch more and gave them to all my friends. They have had similar experiences. So over 12 individual knives, I haven't found a stinker.

it may have not been configured as a durable edge, and that makes comparing edge vs edge difficult some times. @TranceMechanic7 Seems you were a lucky Ozark edge getter.
At the end of the day, it's an amazing fidget toy for me. The action is really loose and smooth and I can flick it back and forth constantly. It's got a better action, in my humble opinion, than a bunch of the more expensive ones I got.
This knife got me obsessed with axis locks, don't ask how many I've bought since I picked up the OT-D2. XD

Mine seemed to do pretty good holding an edge in cardboard. But I actually had a failure of the little plastic "bearing cage" washer, which ended up splitting, and loosening up the action. I did tighten the pivot screw up just enough to take out the little bit of blade play shortly after I got the knife though.

I've had my Ozark for over 6 months and it has handled well so far. I ended up buying another one a little over 3 months ago. I appreciate your videos and am a subscriber, but I still like my Ozark Trail, $10 folding knife. No apologies.
I tried several times to buy this knife, even placing orders when it was in stock on three different occasions without success. So the next time it came in stock I ordered 4 (one to keep, 3 as gifts if the one I was keeping held up). Well, it doesn't seem like mine is holding the edge as well as I'd hoped (though I did manage to dye the scales a nice shade of red). I'd be willing to donate the unopened 3 to a channel for side by side QC comparison and testing. I'm especially interested in seeing if they are still D2 and what the hardness is. I'm also curious how hard it would be to redo the heat treat or if it's a lost cause.
