Sean Power from the Hilson Studio & guitarist Brad Sample explore the history, suggested settings, & range of tones that the Warmdrive amp-in-a-box overdrive pedal recreation delivers. Join these gents as they take a deep dive into an extensive demo & discussion on the Warmdrive!
The Warm Audio Warmdrive is a true reproduction of the most sought-after "amp-in-a-box" pedal of all time, delivering the tones of a truly unattainable overdriven amp.
Both guitar heroes and modern virtuosos like SRV, Eric Clapton, Robben Ford, John Mayer, Santana, and Cory Wong are known to have used either the original amplifier or the pedal inspired by it. With an artist roster like that, it’s no wonder that original vintage pedals are talked about amongst the most demanding and discerning chasers of tone.
Staying true to the legacy, the Warmdrive delivers all the tones of the original pedal and amplifier that inspired it.
Whether you’re driving cleans into breakup, thickening up rhythm tones, or saturating solos, the Warmdrive can transform your amp from a polite and clean pedal platform into a fuzzy monster. While the Warmdrive has plenty of dynamic gain on tap, adding the pedal to your rig does not dramatically alter or diminish your tone.
Just like the original, the Warmdrive has the unique Voice/Tone control to go from silky-smooth tones reminiscent of that special overdriven amp at the sweet spot all the way to sustain-rich distortion. It’s like having the best of both worlds, from clean to mean.
The voice/tone control combination on the stomp box gives artists extra versatility compared to the typical overdrive pedal, allowing the player to modify the frequency both before (voice control) and after (tone control) the clipping stages.
Playing with the knobs can create dynamic sounds that almost seem like two guitar signals going at once. Warmdrive will also push beyond light overdrive, all the way to a saturated cascading gain tone that makes it easy to get lost in a solo jam. Couple these controls with critical volume and gain knobs and the Warmdrive is a venerable addition to any live or studio rig.

I was able to get this pedal and was so impressed. Really think it compliments my fulldrive 2 well - gives me a whole different tone. Thank you Warm!!

Usually the preset suggestio s from the manufacturer are awful. These sound like they actually put thought into it. Warm audio has been killing it with their re-creations

Appreciate the feedback! Yes, we do quite a bit of work at our studio in Austin, TX testing out various tones before printing them in the manual. We definitely want them to be useful starting points for you to explore the tones of the pedal!

I'm really considering this pedal. This was a fine demo, but I would envision this pedal into a high headroom clean amp to show off its strengths. The Dumble sound as I know it is massive, dynamic and can be very high headroom clean/deep. Of course there are different Dumbles, multiple channels, etc, but I think this pedal is going to shine with a high headroom amp turned up a bit volume wise and this pedal will just make it come alive with sustain and dynamics. If I had to play a blues gig with a Hot Rod Deluxe (big pokey headroom) I'd be happy to have a pedal like this to turn an okay clean platform into a serious tone machine.

Nice, that this pedal with this release became available in an affordable price range, as the prices for an original one meanwhile became much too expensive. Even it it is a good pedal, I personally do not want to pay as much for a simple op-amp circuit, if I already get a good tube amp instead too.
The pedal still is not cheap, on the other hand it sounds and works nice, if you look for these tones and it also sounds much more authentically to me than most much cheaper Chinese budget versions.
Warm Audio becomes interesting for me, they meanhwile offer three of the - in my opinion - best overdrive pedals ever and also the Phasor II at a really fair price, if you consider what a real vintage one costs.
The Centavo and the ODD cannot really compete with my PlexiTone, although they sound nice, but the Warmdrive has a different character and is a nice addition for some sweeter, less aggressive, but transparent and organic sounds. Nice in front of a Fender type amp, of course but in my opinion even better in front of a Marshall Plexi or Orange, if you look for these awesome vintage tones, which we all know from iconic recordings, which combine bite, sweetness, transparency and sustain.
Well done! I'm curious what will be released in the future...

Would this pedal do well with a solid state amp? It's fine to hear it with great equipment but us bedroom players use mostly practice equipment.

Same circuit. The new MXR Badass Dynamic blows it out of the water. You can run it crystal clean to high gain and anything in between. It is both touch sensitive and has bags of headroom. I don't hear anything coming out of the 'Warm' that would make me trade it even for a Boss SD-1 :-)

Great sounding pedal… pretty loud pop when turned on and picks up radio frequencies…. I like it a lot though but probably won’t stay on the board because of these issues…
