Modifying Quick Pitch to accept 6 inch square drain

  • I'm using Mark E industries Pre Pitch and Quick Pitch to build the shower floor in the master bath of our custom home. However the drain we are using does not sit down deep enough in the Quick Pitch centering ring to allow the tile to sit flush with the drain lip.
    In this video I use a router to modify the Quick Pitch centering ring and some of the Quick Pitch sticks to allow the drain to seat fully.

    This is the unknown stuff that scares me when you take on a big project. I want to rehab our bathroom, remove the tub with a walk in shower. I’ve watched 100s of videos. All informative. But something entirely different when you do it on your own. So many different ways of doing a project. Hats off.

    Personally I would cut the ring in two, cut my slope guides a little shorter, and use a plastic bag to dam up the openings (created from separating the two "c" sections of ring). With a fairly thick mud mix you can keep it in the form.

    I am dealing with the same problem. I just put in my pre-sloped mud bed on a concrete floor with the perfect pitch. But the absolute minimum height of the Designline drain is still too high. So I think I'm just going to build up the mud bed in the center, while maintaining the proper pitch and hope that works. I hate to do that though because I essentially have to place mud on top of the clamping ring. Nobody ever deals with these details in any of the videos I've seen. Your video at least addresses the issue, but I don't have the whole plastic sloping system you do so it's still a different problem for me.

      The quick pitch system is really just a crutch for people who haven't done mud beds before. This was the very first shower I did and I was happy to have the quick pitch. Still, not a perfect system.

      In my thinking, raising the mud kind of made having the quick pitch guide bars less useful, since they would be buried below the mud at some unknown depth. But that was then. Now, who knows how I would have solved the problem. Thanks for watching!

    Did u account for thin set mortar on the tile.

    • @kilipoheikekanilehua4049
      @kilipoheikekanilehua4049  3 года назад +1

      I guess you could, but in my case I wanted to make sure the tile ended up just above the drain so there wouldn't be any chance of a lip. So I just cut the plastic down until the drain sat flush with the tile and then the thinset would raise the tile above the drain.

  • @marcleblanc7021

    Couldn't you just build your deck mud up a little bit higher around the drain, so the tiles met flush?

    • @kilipoheikekanilehua4049
      @kilipoheikekanilehua4049  2 года назад

      I suppose, if I were a professional. Being DIY, I chose to use quick pitch and pre pitch to save me the guess work of having to get the mud bed even. I can't imagine how it would gave turned out if I'd just tried building the mud be up a half inch everywhere.

    The threaded drains are better and can screw down pretty far, just get a round one instead of the square for ease of maintenance, good idea though, hopefully the pvc doesn’t crack from thinning it out

    • @kilipoheikekanilehua4049
      @kilipoheikekanilehua4049  Год назад +2

      These plastic pieces don't support anything. They are just guides to get the floor pitch right. After the plastic is cut away to accommodate the drain, the entire drain is bedded in mud and thin set. It's these cementicious materials that support the drain.

      It turned out pretty good. Be careful with the pitch bars, because after I routed out the area for the drain about half the height of the bar was cut away, right where it attaches to the ring. So that point was weak and I ended up breaking off the bar-to-ring attachment tab. I had an extra so it didn't matter.

      @@kilipoheikekanilehua4049 so I did some more digging, and the package says universal for the 4" ring, but it looks like universal in this case means for round or square 4" drains. The appropriate drain ring is part number qpucr-108 which has a 6" inner diameter meant to work with oversized square shower drains up to 6" and that have either 2 or 3" drains.

    2 things... did you put a pre-slope under the pan? ditch the grids so you're not locked into the height of your mud bed... it's not that hard to do a mud bed. You're over complicating this. just make your mud bed thickness to the height needed for the drain...

      Love the irony of that statement, if someone hired a contractor I'm sure they thought "Pro" was what they were getting.
      I'm in the field and while I don't agree with the routing, this system is flawed, adding more mortar or thinset only increases how much height you need in a curb, I also prefer minimal thinset during floor install to make sure the tile conforms to the pitch, and dosen't squeeze into the grout lines.

      @kilipoheikekanilehua4049  5 месяцев назад +2

      Thanks for the comment. I can't remember specifically why i went with the quick pitch system over Schluter but I suspect it was because of product availability. This is an oversized shower. I live in Hawaii. No local supply houses carry large scluter kits. Amazon doesn't ship the larger kits here. Home Depot doesn't either. I'm not sure about Lowes, but the nearest one is 4 hours round trip so I'm not doing that unless I have to. If there's an online retailer for it UPS shipping is outrageous to Hawaii.
      So I went with what I could get.

      This shower pan is going to fail due to improper draining. Wrong center ring, to small for square drain. Need larger ring which allows drain to sit inside.
