Well weathered leather. Hot metal and oil. The scented country air. Sunlight on chrome. The blur of the landscape. Every nerve aware.
I love that verse. Neil paints a picture with his words and his percussion. Amazing

RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR!
With heart felt admiration and sincerity!
    Gary

The way everyone mispronounces Neil's name is the way everyone mispronounces if they’ve never heard the correct pronunciation before. It’s the way I used to for years, in the days when you never heard them interviewed. The correct pronounciation is not obvious until you’re told. So I give people a break.
Of course, once you ARE aware then there’s no excuse.

Great reaction! Lyrically, the song takes place in the future when many types of cars are forbidden (The Motor Law), and the only cars allowed were government mandated cars (the alloy air cars). These bloated air cars were encouraged to run these forbidden cars off the road if they encountered them, hence the chase at the end of the song. In an interview, Neil Peart said the lyrics were a metaphor for individual freedom. The music captures the car ride and the chase perfectly! Rush are the best!!!

Rush is the pinnacle of musicianship... it's natural to feel intimidated, especially by Geddy Lee's skills on bass and keyboards.
Same thing w/ Dream Theater... just watching John Myung master his 6-string bass is awe-inspiring 🔥🔥
I read an anecdote about guitarist Pat Smear recalling the first time he heard Eddie Van Halen play guitar on Van Halen's first album in 1978... Smear said Eddie "ruined his life" because he was still learning to play guitar in a punk rock band called Germs... hearing the pinnacle of guitar playing at the time, Smear felt that he could never play on that high level ("I suck! I quit!") ... However, Pat Smear ended up joining Nirvana as a touring guitarist in 1993, and when Nirvana played Los Angeles for the last time, Eddie Van Halen himself reportedly showed up backstage... drunk and begging to jam w/ Nirvana that night... Pat Smear joined forces w/ Nirvana's drummer Dave Grohl in the Foo Fighters and has been playing w/ them since 2007 (Smear left Foo Fighters in '97)
So, you never know what will happen... U gotta do what you do best.

So the song is about a specific farrari from italy of course and the reason geddy lee the bassist and alex lifeson the guitarist mesh is because unlike some bands geddy is following the melody of the guitar but being a 3 piece the bass is just as heavily featured sound wise as the drums and guitar, in many bands the bass isnt as prominent unless your rush or primus of course lol!

I agree with you when you say how amazing they're, how amazing is the music they made, but I have to remind you that, when talking about prog rock, you can't say anyone is so much better than Pink Floyd!
Let's just say they're unique bands, who composed and played fantastic music, each one with one's own style, own way of performing!
Referring to Rush, one of my favorite rock bands for decades, you're right, they never disappoint, and that's why I got some suggestions of their songs for you to react to: "Closer to the heart"; "Subdivisions"; "Xanadu"; "Red Sector A"; "Distant early warning"; "A passage to Bangkok"; "Jacob's ladder".

FWIW, "barketta" is much closer to the Italian than what Geddy sings ("bar-tchetta").
Geddy doesn't mention it in the lyrics, but the Ferrari 166 was nicknamed "barchetta" (little boat), because it kinda looked like one.

If you REALLY want to listen to these classic iconic rock songs, do not use little headphones into your ears.
You need to really swim in the sonic pool of the wonderful sounds these bands created by listening to the music with
room speakers cranked up at least at volume 8 or 10. I am not joking. If you listen to these songs in their original format
as was recorded unto vinyl or on a CD/Flac format you will love it even more. There are many small and detailed sounds which
you can never enjoy listening to if you use tiny little ear phones from a badly recorded RUclips video.

Geddy Lee explains in My Effin Life why they decided to wear more formal wear leaving the 1970’s and into the 80’s. They wanted to present a more professional attitude to their audiences and leave the party lifestyle behind . Lee was struggling with cocaine addiction during this time and by Grace Under Pressure decided to leave that whole thing behind .
