Thank you for the clearest and most comprehensive basic flash operation tutorial that I've come across! I'm looking forward to watching your other tutorials. I'll be looking forward to your eating all those hot peppers....
Claire, that's awesome. Thank you so much, and I'm glad you enjoyed it. Luckily, I'm still far from the stated like count, so I think I'm safe from the peppers for now :-) All the best, Greg
Brilliant ! Only word for it. Watched so many you tubes and got more and more confused, yours ? again Brilliant ! That's a thumbs up and a subscribe from me. Thnx
Excellent presentation and explanation! Also enjoyed the photos in your presentation. Looking forward to seeing more videos of flash for nature photography!
Superb Greg… been using flash for years and read many a book including specialist Nikon books but never had anyone or any information given in such a clear easy to understand way. Hope your book is just as good… I'm navigating to buy a copy now. Thank you
Greg video Greg. A learned a lot. I will be putting it to practice doing some more creative water drop photography. Something I would like to call action-macro. You have given me some great ideas.
Didnt know there was so much info involved, thanks for the lesson, guess i'll be reading your posts a lot more than once, wow. Photography is all about light, so my light sauce has always been the sun and in uk this has a mind of its own. A bit late for me now to learn all this but giving it a go, So low light is faster, this has been my biggest eye opener. Guess a key light would help. Costa Rica sounds really great, all the wildlife ive dreamed of, beat wishes Greg,
Found this just in time as I start a move into flash photography after many years of resisting the option. I have been doing sports photography and flashes are problematic during competition. However, post-game opportunities can be enriched with flash.
@@deepgreenphotography It would be a pleasure to receive you here! Many insects awaiting, and lots of birds!!! But don't go only to Montevideo, nature is more to the east and norht!! I wish travels would be opened to make a workshop with you!!!
Yes. Hawk fans are everywhere! I shoot eagles up here but hope to get a chance to get to Costa Rica someday soon. I would offer to bring you an Iowa sweatshirt but you certainly don’t need it. Love your work and videos.
Thanks, Robert. Glad you enjoyed the e-book. Great question on the flash choice between V860II and V1. I actually did a little test of the V1 and didn't find the lighting quality to be much different/better, despite all of the hype about round heads. While I do like the smaller charger of the V1, I'm not convinced that it's worth the extra price. It is a very nice flash unit though. Cheers, Greg
Hi, I will be producing a video on high-speed sync flash at some point in the coming weeks :-) Thanks for purchasing the book. I hope you're enjoying it!
Great video Greg. Will the transmitter work with my Nikon sb5000? This looks way easier than working with the Nikon setup with a wr10 transmitter. Going to switch to the Godox. Was just hoping the transmitter would trigger my 5000. Thanks and really looking forward to your wireless video.
Hi, Paul. Thanks very much for your kind comments on the video. Unfortunately, no, I'm almost certain that the Godox transmitter will not work to fire your SB-5000 flash, even in manual flash mode. I do share your pain regarding the wr10. A solution, however, especially if you're considering adding Godox flashes to your kit and starting to build/grow around that, is to buy a Godox X1R-N receiver for about $40 (amzn.to/2Z6Wyc0) and attach your Nikon flash to that. This should allow you to control your Nikon SB-5000 off-camera with full TTL and HSS capability via a Godox XPro transmitter for about $65 (amzn.to/3rEGJ8w) in the hotshoe of your camera body. With the XPro transmitter, you can then start adding Godox flashes to the mix with no extra equipment necessary, and you could work in your Nikon SB-5000 too. I hope that helps! Feel free to hit me up here with any follow up questions. Best, Greg
Hi Greg. To photograph diving king fishers at 600mm, from 6-7 meters distance, is it needed to use a fresnel flash extender like the MagBeam or the flash itself would be enough?
Hi, Cristian. That's a good question. The answer of course is, it depends :-) If you are using your fill flash in concert with the ambient light, that means a low dose of flash (e.g., a very low flash power and thus very brief duration). High ISO values will also help the flash in terms of keeping up with a burst. In this case, your flash will recycle quickly and will probably keep up with a burst. If you are underexposing the available nature light and relying more on the flash that will equate to a higher flash power/longer duration/slower recycling time, and a Better Beamer or MagBeam will help to make the flash work more efficiently and thus recycle more quickly. In general, though, when using flash for action photography, a flash extender definitely will help. Cheers, Greg
That certainly wasn't the intent. Please let me know what other types of flash functions you would like to know about for nature photography, and I'll see if I can address them in a future video. Cheers, Greg
Tremendous amount of good information packed into a short video. Greg is the flash MASTER!
Thanks very much, Jack. I'm trying to script things out in advance and keep things concise so I'm glad you appreciated that. Hope all's well!

Outstanding intro to the flash modes. Lots of tips but my favorite is how to get my zoom unfrozen from 14mm.
Thanks, Gary. As I mentioned, that one was a pro tip :-)

Nicely done Greg. Trying to add to the 10,000 likes needed to watch you eat all the peppers!
Ha ha, thanks so much for trying to kill me, amigo :-)

Muy buena intro. Ya se comió todos esos chiles?
Ha ha, todavia no y asi vivo unos dias mas para hacer otro video 😂
Great video, but please blink…. You are scaring me
Ha ha, I'll have to give that blinking thing a try.
all this was mostly about Wildlife photography though, not much to do with Nature Photography. the video title is very misleading.....

not gonna lie, I'm still way out of my depth when it comes to flash
It's practice, practice, practice :-)
