🔴 Here's my latest video ... off camera flash photography indoors and outdoors: ruclips.net/video/KpZ46a1fu3g/видео.html
YES! Somebody actually explained how to set up the camera and flash instead of just going straight into the creative side. The massive bonus is no background music and no shouting American!
Thanks so much Kram. Glad you liked it! 😁👍
No shouting American lol. Yah, we tend to be pretty annoying in our self absorbed look at me attitudes.
That's insane. I've watched this video 3 times to really grasp the settings and never once did I realize there was no background music. Haha.
You are not very bright viking
@@mvabiv there is background music. Just very faint
I’m not even done watching but omg I’ve learned so much!
That's great to hear!
Thanks for watching 😁👍
Me too ✨
Right?!?!?
Wow! The most well thought out, perfectly written, perfectly spoken, perfectly exampled, perfectly focused, zero bs, totally helpful video i have seen in a long time! Thankyou & Subcribed
Thanks very much Nick, I appreciate your kind words. I have a lot more tutorials on my channel and hopefully I'll be getting part 3 to this video done soon!
Welcome to the community! 😁👍
Agreed Nick! Very well done.
This tutorial falls under the category
"What noone teaches, but everyone needs"
Thanks so much! 😁👍
I agree 100%. I've been tearing my hair out trying to figure this out. In about 15 minutes I've finally understood! Thank you!
Great to hear Taylor! 😁👍
@@mikesphotography Than you Mike! I find your tutorials amazing!
Thank you so much for your tutorial. I have struggled to find someone who can articulate this topic in a digestible manner.
Your clear & concise verbal description along with examples was brilliant.
I'm now looking forward to experimenting with some confidence.
Very much appreciate your good work - Cheers
Thanks so much Dean, I'm glad I could help. Flash photography is a bit daunting at first but once you get your head around it, it starts to make more sense! 😁👍
This is 100 times better than other things I was watching to understand, where were you all these days !!!!!
Thanks very much!!
That damn algorithm gets in the way sometimes!! 😫🤦🏻♂️
Thanks for watching 😁👍
Absolutely brilliant - and NO ANNOYING MUSIC!!! Diction - perfect; video focus throughout - perfect. Content - totally excellent!
No doubt I will have many questions regarding macro flash photography when I get further into this new adventure of mine! Cheers from Ian, DownUnder.
Great to hear Ian, I'm glad you got something out of this tutorial. Haha!! I'm guessing that annoying music in the background that is too loud is a pet peeve. 😁👍
Great video :)
That is a text book style guide.
No useless blablabla, yet very entertaining. You have something about that makes a teacher one can trust completely and dont appeal as a teacher.
Keep on :)
Thanks so much for your kind words. I have a lot of fun making these and there's a lot more to come. 😁👍
Just wanted to bump this video because it's perfect for anybody wanting to learn flash photography fundamentals. The cheat sheet at the 12:45 mark is great for screenshotting on your phone and saving it to a note so that you always have it with you.
Thanks so much Moe! Flash photography can be quite daunting but it doesn't have to be. Once you understand it like I've explained, it's a great foundation to build your confidence and skills up from.
Thanks for watching. 😁👍
This tutorial was 110% best thing since sliced bread, love your work!
Awesome to hear Samuel.
Thanks for watching...plenty more to come as well. 😁👍
I absolutely needed this. THANK YOU!
That’s awesome Brandon, I’m glad I could help!! Lots more flash photography tutorials coming this autumn so stay tuned!! 😁👍
The clarity of this guys voice is seriously amazing. Great teacher !
Thanks so much Sammy! 😁👍
Finally, The quest is over...
A very BIG thanks to you, MIKE.
You got a new subscriber... !¡!
Great to hear it has helped Virendra! Hopefully I'll have part three coming really soon! ... and here's a link to part 2 just in case you haven't seen it already: ruclips.net/video/Jc3Pu-qgHWs/видео.html&t
Thanks for watching, commenting and subscribing, much appreciated! 😁👍
Incredible in-depth explanation, so far the only video I found that was not only easy to follow but explained in a technical level.
Gee, I thought I know a bit about using flash. After viewing your tutorial I now know what I didn't know!! Thanks for making the basics understandable.
No worries John, I’m glad I could help.
It took me a while to get my head around it...a photographer I learned a lot off taught me this and once I understood it, it made a lot more sense. Since then my flash photography improved a lot.
Thanks for watching and commenting! 😁👍
Wow I never expected flash photography to be so complicated. I'll definitely be returning to this video when I get my first flash
FINALLY a good & clear explanation awesome vid! I've been swimming around many tutorials, this is the one
Thanks very much Jay!
Best photography flash class I've ever had. Congratulations!
This has been the MOST useful video I’ve watched.
Great to hear it has helped Adam. 😁👍
I’m using a strobe but I’m learning from this video. This is the second time I’ve watched this but I feel I’m learning a lot more since I’m putting things in practice. Thank you for the detailed tutorial
I've been looking around for flash tutorials and this is absolutely the easier one that taught me the post. Another great video.
Great to hear Brian! I'm glad I could help. 😁👍
Now this is what I call a tutorial.
Thank you so much,I understood this perfectly
This was SO HELPFUL!
That's great to hear!
Thanks for watching 😁👍
I totally agree!
Thanks very much Sherene! 😁👍
Best simple, basic tutorial on flash photography.
As a engineer, I appreciate the sophistication of your motion test. Occam's Razor.
Haha! Thanks very much Jon, I try to keep things as simple as possible...whenever possible...
Thanks for watching 😁👍
Clearest exposition on these topics that I have ever seen. Thank you so much!
:o Mind blown! I was super reluctant to get a flash because I figured it was just a cheaper alternative to a constant video light. But now knowing that the shutter doesn’t change the flash exposure, allowing for separate control of ambient and flash light, I know it’s more powerful for photography. Amazing! Thanks mike.
It does make such a difference once you get your head around it! I'm glad I could help and get you thinking differently about flashes and strobes. They really do come in handy when it comes to photography!
Thanks for watching!
This video completely demystified the technicalities of flash photography. Thank you.
Thanks so much Stephen! 😁👍
If it isn’t already planned, I’d like to suggest you do a video on using flash for macro photography. I’m trying to do some handheld macro with a flash. I’ve had some success, but would appreciate your view on this. I do mostly flowers and bugs outside, but would also like to try stuff stuff in my “studio” ( which is a table in my basement).
BTW, I appreciate the videos you do, you have a knack for explaining things in a way that’s easy for me to understand. Keep up the good work.
Thanks so much Gary, I’ll definitely add that to the list!
Handheld macro is quite the challenge...
Sounds like a good sturdy studio!! 😆👍 my studio is our spare room!! 😆
And thanks for your kind words, they really motivate me to make more videos and tutorials! 😁👍
@@mikesphotography I add a + on to macro flash !!! Ring flashes have now become cheaper, and we need to learn more about it. I do macro on a regular basis, but the flash is still a big ??? (question mark) ;)
Mike, you're a wonderful teacher
Thanks so much!! 😁👍
I really needed a video like this!!! Thank you so much for taking the time to explain and educate. All of your videos are super simple to understand. Great teacher. Greetings from Argentina
Thanks so much Cami! I'm so glad I was able to help. Flash photography can seem like a huge daunting thing to learn, but when broken down into the basics...it becomes a little easier to understand.
Thanks for watching. 😁👍
When I saw the length of the video I figured it would be too much but it turns out this was the most straight ~ forward easily understood video I've watched. Thank you so much for your time sir.
That's great to hear, I'm glad I could get all the info you needed in this one.
Thanks for watching McLuvin 😁👍
Great video and nice T shirt, never knew your r Pink Floyd fan 👍👍👍👍
Thanks Sherif! It’s all about the old classics, as well as the new rock!! 😁👍
oh gosh finally! All in one tutorial, quick, to the point, clear as....I couldn't be more grateful! thank you! In just 15 min explained what I was looking for for hours on youtube....
This was exactly the info I needed to hear, thanks! Now to find a patient model to let me practice on... 🤔
Great to hear Daniel! Haha! Yes that is the hard part...😆
Thanks for watching 😁👍
Thanks Mike. I have learned a lot from your videos. They are clear and precise with no annoying extras. Others could learn from your approach.
Thanks so much! 😁👍
Amazing video! I finally understand how the flash works! (I am a total beginner). Would be great if you could make a video about using multiple flash units together.
That’s awesome, I’m glad my tutorial has helped!!
I’m filming part 2 at the moment, so with any luck it’ll be ready before Christmas...and there will probably be a part 3 as well!!
Thanks for watching 😁👍
It's taken me two years to get to this video as it's only now I have a flash and am keen to learn how to use it! Great video. The subject has been very well explained, thank you.
Thanks very much Darren! Glad to hear you've finally found my tutorial. The RUclips algorithm works in mysterious ways sometimes! 😆🤦🏻♂️
Thanks for watching 😁👍
What a great explanation....without all the crap like “Yeh, yeh yeh, hey what’s up, jimmy d in the house BOOM!” If I hear BOOM one more time on a RUclips video
Haha!! I might have to make a parody one day...😆😆😆
Thanks so much Steve! One of the reasons I started this channel was because I was getting so annoyed at waiting 5-10 minutes for the presenter to get to the point...😫
Thanks for watching. 😁👍
A simple explanation that made my flash photography a charm. Thank you
Great to hear it has helped!
Thanks for watching. 😁👍
Thanks Mike! You've inspired me to make learning flash photography my winter project.
That’s awesome Jim! I’ve got lots more flash photography tutorials coming so hopefully they’ll help your winter quest!!
Thanks for watching!! 👍
Jim Bartel, me too!
That’s excellent Judi!! 😁👍
this tutorial series has made me finally understand how to use flash. I have owned an off-camera flash for almost two years without really using it. thank you. watching this series will continue to help me down the road. thank you so much.
Thanks so much Judith, great to hear my tutorials are helping. 😁
I have more videos coming in the series soon so keep an eye out for those. 😁👍
This is one of the most comprehensive, yet basically explained (if that makes sense) tutorials I've seen about flash use...and I've been a photographer for 20 years. Well done--thank you so much!
Thanks so much Lisa!
That does make sense!! 😆
Thanks for watching 😁👍
Thank you. I searched and searched and searched, i found this, now I am an expert. MIND BLOWN.... Good job
As usual, simple, clear, complete and extremely well done. Thank you very much Mike.
i just bought Yongnuo YN560IV yesterday and your video by far is the most comprehensive tutorial i've found. i never would've thought that you could control both the flash light & ambience light just by using the shutter speed. thank you for sharing your knowledge.
No worries, once you get your head around this, it does all start to make much more sense. I use this technique for all of my corporate shoots and I know I can set it up and get the light exactly where I want it every time. 😁👍
I have a flash that sat in the cupboard for three years as I could never make sense of it. Session 1 ... was a clear ah ha moment for me, session 2 and 3 were really good. For the first time, and with pauses to harass my wife and the dog with practice (poor dog hates the recharge whine) , I feel confident enough to use the thing. Simple explanation of M rather than TTL & how flash power, camera speed and aperture affect the result were easily followed. Thanks Mike.
That's great to hear that I could help! It is one of those genres of photography that is easy once you know the basics...but the basics are seldom taught.
Thanks for watching 😁👍
Somehow anytime I'm.confused about a subject, a boxhead mike video appears right then. Not sure if its magic, luck, or just really knowing your audience and their needs, but I'm not complaining! Thanks for another great great tutorial mike! I know I'll come back to this one for sure
Haha!! It must be the google magical thought reader algorithm!! 😆 It pops things up before you even think of them!!
I hope this one helps Ian...it was such a big subject that even just the basics took a while to get through. Had fun making though and I deepened my understanding of the subject so its a win win!!
As always, thanks for watching and commenting dude, much appreciated! 😁👍
@@mikesphotography my pleasure. Defintlitely helped so far#
Flash stuff is so foreign to me as a beginner - thank you so much. All I needed was a simple and thorough explanation like this!
That's awesome, I'm glad I could help Artie. 😁👍
The best tutorial on Flashes I've seen. The examples and illustrations you use made all the difference. Thank you!
You're very welcome! Thanks Adi!! 😁👍
just bought a Godox flash
and as a beginner i absolutely love your explanation
still trying to understand the basics
thank u sir
Great to hear my tutorials are helping!
Thanks for watching 😁👍
The clearest explanation of how to use a flash ! thanks!!
Thanks very much! 😁👍
This is the first time tutorial on flash made sense to me. I always carry my flash, but never use it. Now I’m more comfortable using flash.
Great to hear it has helped Masao! Now it's about putting in to practice what you have learned. 😁👍
Thank you for always explaining everything so clearly and simply Mike!
No worries Charlotte, thanks for watching 😁👍
This is one of the best Tutorials for photography! Period.
Thanks so much!! 😁👍
@@mikesphotography Thank you for bringing all that knowledge to people trying to get into (flash) photography! I know how much time must have gone into this and I appreciate it.
And thanks so much for your kind words. It took a lot to make this but I've wanted to do it for a while as there aren't many other out there that have broken it down like this.
It makes so much sense when broken down like this and makes flash photography so straight forward and easy to understand. 😁👍
Thank You! I've always been mystified by my Yongnuo Flash and using any off-camera flash. Your video explanation was great!! Today I used it in-depth for first time after owning it for over 2 years. Images turned out great. Thank you!!
That's fantastic to hear!! Flash photography seems really daunting at first, but it really doesn't have to be. Once you get these basics down, you'll start to get some great images ... and it sounds like you're getting them already! 😁👍
I was always apprehensive about flash photography but this tutorial has given me the confidence to give it a go.
Great to hear Kay!! People sometimes make it sound far more daunting than it needs to be... go for it!! 😁👍
Great video! Excellent explanation of this topic. My favorite was the "cheat sheet" towards the end....it served to summarize all the key points and gave me the comfort in knowing that I had a good starting point which I could them customize as needed. Well done sir!!
Excellent Mike! Very well done. You have a clear mind and the ability to communicate your solid understanding so that people new to the topic can pick it up.
As always, You are very concise and to the point. watching 2 minutes of your tutorials is worth an hour of other videos. I am binging your videos already
Thanks so much!! 👍
Lots more to come as well!! 😁
You're absolutely right. Best on the subject video I have watched. Thank you very very much. Will watch next part in the series.
Thanks very much Gilbert! 😁👍
Many videos later, I've found that one which is, "Finally I've found the video which I fully understand re: simple flash basics." Truly essential video. God Bless and Happy 2021!
Great to hear it has helped Larry! Thanks so much for watching and I hope you have a great 2021 as well! 😁👍
actually this video has helped me to understand the basics of using speedlight as it was my first time, but I was able to take the best shot within an hour.
Brilliant simple but complete explanation to get you started. I have been using flash for years but on automatic TTL. It’s great to learn how much it can be tweaked on manual to optimise my photos. Thank you.
You are a wizard. Perfect explanation. Thanks for making it simple.
Thanks very much Joe!
Mike Thank you!!!! This has been the best explanation to Flash photography I have ever seen. I finally understand it.
That's great to hear I've been able to help!
Thanks for watching 😁👍
This guy is the hero we need but don't deserve. A really epic video! Thank you so much.
Haha!! I'm just helping one photographer at a time 🦸♂️ ...😆😆😆
Thanks very much for your kind words, and thanks for watching 😁👍
Amazing overview of flash photography. Best on RUclips. Can't wait for Part 2.
Thanks Daniel!
I am actually taking my channel in a different direction this year, focussing on landscape photography, so all of my flash photography tutorials have been unlisted (annoying algorithm issues that I won't get in to). But here are the links for part 2 and part 3 as well as my off camera flash video:
Part 2 ruclips.net/video/Jc3Pu-qgHWs/видео.html
Part 3 ruclips.net/video/sltl975vNjA/видео.html
Off camera flash photography: ruclips.net/video/KpZ46a1fu3g/видео.html
I hope that helps and thanks for watching 😁👍
So crisp and to the point.Really needed this tutorial.Thank you very much.
That's great to hear that it has helped! Thanks for watching! 😁👍
You are definitely one of the best explainers for this! been searching all over about speed lights and glad I found this finally! Thank you 👍🏻 huge huge help
Thanks so much Sydney! It's all about the basics, once you have a solid grounding in flash photography, it all becomes a little easier to get your head around...when I was learning it took me a while until one of the guys I was learning from broke it down similar to this...even on film it follows the same rules. 😁👍
The BEST explanation of flash photography !!!!!!👍
Thanks so much Laureen! 😁👍
Really in-depth and I like the examples you shared. Thank you!
This is the best flash tutorial I've ever seen. Thank you!
That's great to hear Leider! I also have part 2 and 3 available (links in the description).
Thanks for watching 😁👍
Definitely learned a lot in only 15 minutes. Lots of practical tips and good comparisons among different setting. You really explained the general rules of flash photography. I’m gonna check out the next one!

Thanks Mike never really understood how to use a flash i will watch this video many times over if only for the attire, i knew you would come to your senses i bet you feel a lot better now Thanks
Haha!! It was only a matter of time!! 😆
Flash photography is such a difficult subject to understand...once you get the basics it does start to come together though.

Something ticked in my brain and I think i finally understand something. Thanks, gonna try it out this weekend!
Thank you!!!! That is all I needed.....simple, concise instruction, clearly spoken :) Just starting with a little home studio and managed to get a 550 ex flash and had no idea what to do with it. Now...practice, practice, practice. Subscribed.
Exactly! It's all about getting to grips with the basics and then practicing...a lot!
Great to hear my tutorial has helped. 😁👍
I own a flashlight since more than a year but I never really liked to use it. Never really understood the basics, even after watching some tutorials. But after watching your video, my motivation in practising how to use a flash definitely came back.
Thank you very much for this awesome content, you‘re doing a great job.
Subscribed! Looking forward to watch more of your videos.

Thanks so much Azizur, I really appreciate your kind words. It really inspires me to keep making more tutorials.
Thanks for watching! 👍
@@mikesphotography It will be very helpful for me if you make a video explaining the science behind light in photography. I know the practical ways to use flash. And most of us probably know the practical use, but don't know the science behind it.
I'll see what I can do Azizur! 😁👍
thank you so much. i have learnt a lot and understood more about flashing now. am going to make use of my flash now.
A wonderful tutorial, well presented and explained. I was lost in complex tutorials before I found this. Good job Mike!

You are such a good teacher! This video is so well thought out!
