I have a flash that sat in the cupboard for three years as I could never make sense of it. Session 1 ... was a clear ah ha moment for me, session 2 and 3 were really good. For the first time, and with pauses to harass my wife and the dog with practice (poor dog hates the recharge whine) , I feel confident enough to use the thing. Simple explanation of M rather than TTL & how flash power, camera speed and aperture affect the result were easily followed. Thanks Mike.

This is a great tutorial given by a seemingly very pleasant fellow. What's not to like? Who are the 54 disgruntled haters who gave a thumbs down? Maybe you folks think the tutorial was too basic and a waste of your time? Well, the title states pretty clearly that the video is for beginners. Part 1, no less. So what did you expect?

There are grumpy people in all walks of life and there will always be someone who doesn't like the length, the colours, the presenter, the voice...it's that old adage, "you can't please all of the people all of the time"...the funniest thing is that the people who have given it a thumbs down are showing that they have engaged with it, so youtube will mark it up the ranks...
Thanks for sticking up for me though, I really do appreciate it. 😁👍

:o Mind blown! I was super reluctant to get a flash because I figured it was just a cheaper alternative to a constant video light. But now knowing that the shutter doesn’t change the flash exposure, allowing for separate control of ambient and flash light, I know it’s more powerful for photography. Amazing! Thanks mike.

Good tut, Mike. Perhaps a bit long for a “beginners part 1”. I’ll bet many viewers will replay/pause the vid several times to absorb the content. Most folks in my circle shun flash, mainly because of the challenges of exposing for both ambient and flash. (It’s a small circle, OK? 😁) People stay with available/constant light sources - easy w/modern LED gear. Light bouncing/diffusion and zooms are easier concepts. But problems come up when managing two exposure settings. More so with multiple strobes. I remember flash meters and guide numbers. My old Vivitar units would fry the electronics in today’s cams. Useful examples in the vid (everyone is a ham). Kinda boils down to test shoot, chimp, adjust until we get it right - gotta be a better way.

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  5 лет назад

      Thanks Paul.
It's such a huge subject that it was a challenge keeping it down to this! 😆
When I was learning the basics, I took a lot of bad photos for a long time and it wasn't until a fellow photographer taught me these principles...then I started to get it and started getting better results.
It very much is a case of trial and error...I think it's one of the best ways to learn, as you start to see what works but more importantly what doesn't work and through repetition, you get a feel for it and it becomes more natural. 👍
      Thanks for watching! 😁

Mike, Happy New Year. I just want to let you know you SAVED MY ASS on New Years eve. I've shot mostly natural history videos for the last 30+ years, but recently have done more photography. Since C19 crushed much of our kind of work (just about ANY kind of work) in 2020, I've done whatever I could to make ends meet.
A local casino found some of my work online and hired me to photograph VIP customers having complimentary dinners in 3 of the restaurants within the casino. I know just about zip of shooting with a flash. I watched MANY YT videos on beginning flash shooting and learned a bit from some of them, but when I got to yours, I FINALLY got it! It's a great beginner's look into the balance needed to shoot subjects and the ambient background with a flash.
Overall, I did a pretty good job, considering I ended up shooting 100's of images, running from restaurant to restaurant, my fiancé getting the email addresses of each of the people at any given table, then me shooting 2 or more images of each couple/individual and making needed exposure adjustments on the fly. All the while approaching and interrupting them with food in their mouths. I truly appreciate it was paying work, but it's not the kind of gig I want on a regular basis!
Regardless, your video was the tipping point for me...and I found it on December 30!!! At least I didn't put it off to the last minute!

I still didn't learn flash, but has as a goal to learn it within Christmas! This is brilliant and your thought process is just so clear. 2,2 years into RAW-photography now, since I started taking photography more seriously with my a7III. But you just have to learn a little day by day, and let it add up over time. Just a pity I started too late.

    • @mikesphotography

Voluminous informative contents are well packed with the stimulated time.

There is off camera flash concept, which has more powerful way to control light. Really interesting and difficult. We will explore many creative ways. For that we need 3 or more flash lights.
At present, I have one flash. Due to limited budget available, unable to purchase more. In future, I will get it.

You can do it, just keep studying the basics and once you get those, you can build on them and really have a deep understanding of flash photography.
