Last week we did a bit of Robben Ford stuff, I think we will do more of that in future, but folks asked for some new stuff, so I thought this vamp from Tom Misch's I Wish was a good starting point - one of my favourite tunes from him, but what REALLY makes this hard is the right hand work....

Interestingly, it seems like Tom has changed the way he plays this over time - on the record, the first little ghost note is a C#, not an E like he plays nowadays live?
On the record he doesn't do the the kind of percussive approach bits as much - it's a simpler version than he plays live!
Facts! He changes it every time. The bread and butter is there to learn it. Its good thats there so many ways to play it with expression

Excellent! Thank you! I think the first chord is best labelled F#9sus4/A followed by a G# passing note in the bass and then going to a F#m9 chord and then Ema7. The first bar feels more like 4 beats of an F#m chord with extensions and starting with the 1st inversion (/A) but settling on the root note F#. I doubt that Tom Misch was thinking about it that way, but that he came up with this awesome sounding vamp because he's just good at it. A natural talent!

I didn’t notice puppy at first, I love doggies🔥🔥🥰 and great tutorial I’m finally trying to take the guitar seriously now as I have owned one for 3 years and haven’t played it more than 20 times, and Tom Misch became one of my favorites instantly when I first heard his stuff

Very nice groove I did not know this tune. I must admit though, I got distracted by the uncut E string undulating in odd signatures, and I was so worried for the dog :)

Normally I can't play what I see on youtube because I don't have the right guitar, the right amp or the right pedals. It's the first time that the reason is I don't have the right dog!

@@johnnathancordy Oo, thanks for that suggestion-"Movie" is great, something like a combination of Philly soul and Motown, with enough modern elements (touch of jazz, touch of rap, cool sonics) to make it fresh. -Tom

Funny how you hear this in E major; in the context of the whole progression with soloing, it sounds like C#minor to me?
I view E major and C#m (especially in the case here where it's natural minor) as interchangeable?
@@johnnathancordy well yeah, they’re relative major/minor, but in terms of emphasis, there’s a difference. In this case, while you’re soloing, C# feels like “home” to me. In any case, it’s a very cool groove and progression, and I’ll have to work on the right hand part, getting those ghost notes!
