In 1871-2, Georges Bizet had serious financial issues. He had not written yet his masterpiece, "Carmen", but many symphonic "gems". He was a promising composer and he had a strong feeling that, someday he could possibly bring out a great work for the stage. In a letter to his father he wrote:
"Please, do me a favour and don't worry about me. All that I need is a smashing hit like "Les Huguenots". I'm sure that, soon I will manage to write something very special for the "Opéra Comique". I estimate that I could earn more than 100.000 francs. Thus, our problems will be solved for ever and you wouldn't have to go to work any more."

It's interesting to note that in 1890, the year before the Paris premiere of Wagner's Lohengrin there were no performances of Wagner's opera at the Paris Opera but there were 32 performances of Meyerbeers four grand operas. In 1909 there were 60 performances of Wagner's works and only 3 performances of Les Huguenots.

Pretty sure this is Auntie Joan's farewell performance, her last major role. Sydney Opera House 1990 Bonynge conducting (of course!).

Are we at the "Abjurez, Hugenots! Abjurez ou mourirez!" (or, "Give up, Hugenots, Give up or you'll all die!") part?

It is not just a "Raoul and Valentine" story in this opera. This opera also talks about subversion and massacre.........

Wow!!! What lively and wonderful music!!! Where is Meyerbeer’s music now??? I guess Wagner decided to destroy this Jewish music and stop it from being heard. With his hatred of Jewish music and Jews in general, he managed to obliterate Meyerbeer’s work. Thereafter, Herr Hitler took over. So very obscene.
