- Today we are working on my brother's Honda Civic which has come to me with a large oil leak. He's had it for a while and never leaked any oil until after a recent visit to a shop needing assistance with cylinder miss issues. It is now leaking about a quart every week to week and a half if driven regularly. I suspect the O-ring around the distributor housing. In this video, I run through the process of removing and installing the distributor. As for the leak... well that is a resolved in the next video. See link below:

i just got my Honda 2000 from my friend and has an oil leak. tgis video helped out alot thanks for showing.
I find it best to remove the distributor cap and face the rotor button sideways in the position of the screw facing the rear as I was going to replace the rotor button. When I put the distributor back in I position the rotor button the same way I took the distributor out. If you're 180 degrees out the distributor will go in at a angle and not seat properly. I like to replace the valve cover gasket kit when when replacing the distributor o-ring. The valve cover kit covers the Spark plug dwells O-rings, Cam plug, and valve cover gasket. While I'm there I clean or replace the PCV valve and check all the rubber vacuum lines for cracks or distress. I also use CRC throttle body cleaner to clean the throttle body. A side note: Before I replace any gasket I use carburetor cleaner cleaning the surface of the area That clean area will tell me if my leak has stopped. It's hard to tell if it's still leaking if the area is left oily.

great video! thanks for the upload! i have been searching for the correct size of gasket to buy, but some stores have it listed under multiple categories. Is the distributor o ring the same thing as a distributor mounting gasket? i just want to make sure i get the right size for the right part. once again thank you for adding this video, i am doing both the o ring and solenoid gaskets on my gfs 99 civic ex.
Thanks for the example. I will be doing it soon too. But one of your viewers before me said a person would have to be careful not to move the distributer rotor when off. Don't think it would run well if the slot changes 180Deg. Like he said the bolt holes are slotted intended for timing adjustment so unless you can verify rotor and casing go back exactly like taken off without movement. I would say you'll need a timing readjustment. Great video on the o ring though.
You as well as the previous viewer are correct. Mark what you can so everything lines up. I guess I missed this step and just got lucky that everything lined back up. It's been running great since this repair! Thank you for watching and the input!
Once you re-install the distributor, don't you have to verify the timing? The bolts that hold the distributor in place has slots that allow the distributor to be rotated. That can result in the timing being off. Maybe enough so that it will not start?

The distributor was fine. I was removing it thinking this is where a substantial oil leak was coming from. Leak ended up coming from the VTec solenoid on the back I have a video showing this repair. Seals were bad, Up until the vehicle was totaled in a crash, it ran great after this repair.
You could also try some AT-205 Reseal, mix it in the oil and run it a couple days and I've heard it reseals old seals that leak but idk how long it lasts, have not used it myself yet I'm about to grab some next payday.
That sort of stuff might be good in a pinch but it's generally a much better idea to replace the offending part

Don't forget timing. Otherwise you'll have pinging and engine damage. I was hoping he'd show how to mark it to avoid having to use a timing light when reassembling.

There is another main seal. You have to fully take it apart to reach that seal, at the bottom of the shaft.

so did it fix the leak?? cuz I have a big oil leak that looks lik e that is where it is coming from. As far as I know the distributor has never been replaced so wanting to know if the o-ring goes bad on its own and if so does it cause a massive leak?? thank you.

i have a 1994 honda civic ex with the same oil leak problem and i saw in your video that you still havent fixed the oil leak yet after replacing the distributor gasket try checking the vtec solenoid gasket its right above the distributor to the right on top looks like a little metal canister thats where my civic is leaking oil from i replace my oil pan gasket valve cover gasket distributor gasket and my vtec solenoid gasket and found out that was where it was leaking oil from there is also 2 gaskets you need to replace for your vtec solenoid gasket if anyone else is having a oil leak right under there distributor right on top of the transmission here are both the part numbers for the vtec solenoid gaskets for the first one it is 15825-P2M-005 and for the second gasket it is 36172-P08-015 i hope this was a help there is also a video on youtube you can check out if you need help to install ruclips.net/video/qBSTOpp9oFo/видео.html

so if you can get those notches to mate( the rotor to the camshaft)... that means I dont have to bring piston NO.1 to TDC?
this is what i am going through currently. installed new distributor in my prelude thinking i could only be 180 degrees out of timing but i am thinking maybe i should bring 1st cylinder to tdc but i am unaware if i have to or not. did you figure this out?

@@importfanboy7805 intake, compression, combustion, exhaust. And i havent fired her up yet. Im still working on the front suspension waiting on a damn bushing.
You want youre 1st piston to be at TDC on its compression stroke. You just need to remove the spark plug and turn the crank shaft until you can feel pressure on your palm. then place a stick in there or some thing that wont hurt your piston head and keep turning the crankshaft pulley until the stick stops moving. now youve hit tdc. Look at the videos bro. dont give up.

I have a 1995 Honda accord I did exactly what you did but I’m still getting leaks inside the distributor I’ve replaced both gaskets I don’t know why? There’s a little void space underneath the distributor with a little metal piece screwed in what is the purpose of that because that’s where the oil is draining out. Help?

do you know what a "cyp" code is for a 94 honda accord f22? i was told it was the distributor.
i removed the hole distrubiuter i dint took the wires off and then i took the o ring out and replaced it the i put it back like it waz hooked the wires back and i triede to start it. it dint want to start. then i took the distrubiuter cap off and i cranked it to see if it wood turn and it did and also checked the spark on the wires and they all got spark
Do you know what those two components are (6:46) that are connected by a black plug and a grey plug), which are under the distributor/on right side of the black hose with a clamp?
I believe that is the engine coolant temperature(ECT) sensor

hey im having crank no start on my 95 acura integra. ive changed my icm and coil an also new rotor in the dizzy.. itll start for maybe 2 second but dies. my friend taps on the dizzy an it stays running longer.. any ideas?
Do you need to drain out the oil when you remove the distributor?

Dude I have 1979 HONDA CIVIC CVCC. ..YES ...BUT GOT ANTIFREEZE IN MY SPARK PLUS WELLS....IS IT A BLOWN HEAD GASKET....I AM ASSUMING SO...DO YOU HAVE A VIDEO ON SOMETHING THAT OLD...
All of them? or one or a couple(state which cylinders) Probably a crack in the cylinder head housing somewhere. May need to perform a cooling system pressure test to know for sure. I am sorry, I don't have a video for this type of issue or procedure. Someone might though if you use the right keywords. Wish I could help further, but good luck.

Will removing it mess with timing?
Potentially, make markings at bolt locations and wire the cam lines up to help align everything back up when it comes time to reassemble.
I got a big antifreeze leak right under the distributor housing...it is not oil...so what do I do...thanks
Check the coolant hose connection right in front of the distributor(think this is also where the thermostat is located) as well as the sensor right behind this hose connection. Worst case is a cracked cylinder head in that area or a blown out head gasket. you may also find a lot more information on the many forums out on the internet dedicated to Civics.
+JungleKing007 Thanks dude..it was my heater hose shaped like a ( S )...17.00 bucks new antifreeze..I did the job by myself. .it was a cracked heater hose shooting up towards the distributor housing...

im having the most difficult time getting electronic parts to disconnect, I'm pressing the tab in the middle but the damn thing does not want to come off. I even tried using a flat head. any help??

electronic clips can sometime be a bear to pull apart but as long as you press hard enough on the side tab, it should release and allow for separation.
JungleKing007 okay, I'll try it when I do it next time. lol I was able to change the o ring without disconnecting it. it was a tight change but I just couldn't get that out of there
I also had a heck of a time trying to disconnect the clip. Finally I removed the entire bracket, which made everything a little easier to access. With patient work I was finally able to get them apart. Note that there are two tabs, not just one. They are on opposite sides of the plug. You have to press both in order to pull them apart.
hello I have a 1995 Honda Civics EX and my car won't start I don't know what it is it could be the timing belt and could be run distributor I replace the distributor but when I looked it look in the inside of the distributor at the ignition coil the spring was broken off, and also to mine I need a new battery so what I did I got a used battery do you guys think that I should just buy a brand new battery in my car will maybe start up please contact me or respond back thanks
+Shahkera Clark +Shahkera Clark if the distributor is broken, replace it, get a decent battery so you have power to turn the vehicle over. Quick online searches state to check the starter as well if vehicle has trouble turning over. Could be a timing belt if it is worn or snapped. I would suggest looking for a forum that is tailored to working on Honda civics and looking through thier posts that describe the problems your are having. Good luck! I hope this little bit helps.

+Raul Albiter could be multiple things. What is it doing now after removal and reinstall? check that the spark plug wires are going to the same terminal in the distributor. be very sure the key on the distributor lined up correctly with the cam. then be sure everything is hooked up correctly.
how do you know how tight to make the bolts?
+pawkyyy by feel in this video, but there are probably some proper torque specs somewhere. A Haynes manual or internet forum may house this info.
