  • In this video I finally tackle the oil leakage issue on the 1998 Honda Civic that has been wreaking havoc on my parents driveway. This is a relatively simple repair that requires few tools and a few Honda specific gaskets.
    Part numbers: 15825-P2M-005 & 36172-P08-015
    If everything goes smoothly, this process should take only a few minutes. If it doesn't, like pretty much every repair I try to do, it may take you a few hours. Enjoy!

    I replaced mine and when i took apart the solenoid I noticed the gasket on top had a crack. I knew that was the cause of the oil leak so I went ahead and replaced both gaskets. Saved me a couple hundred bucks. Now my 02 Civic with 235k is not leaking oil anymore. 😆

    T H A N K Y O U ! I had been looking for this leak forever. I had gone out tonight and looked again and seen where it was coming from and wondered where I was going to find out what the name of "the thing" was. Was going to send it into the shop to have it fixed but then found your video. Passed the info along to my 26 year old daughter an told her it would be a good project for her to do and she is going to do it this weekend. Thanks.

    Best video on the repair no doubt, just finished mine still was a little oil on transmission but it may just be residual, gonna drive 50 miles tomorrow will no for sure if I got it after that, mine is 97 civic ex gaskets were definitely blown oil was seeping onto the plug connecting the selonoid and the gaskets were in bad shape hopefully that's it, also did distributor o ring , very little oil there but my engine performance improved, better idling etc from changing tha,t engine is smooth running now after those among other repairs i did, Denso upstream o2 sensor, water outlet cover gasket, fuel filter, fuel pump started with P0170 code ended up all the way here these final repairs icing on the cake for performance,
    Only additions i can add is it you are going to do 1 or the other distributor o ring of vtec selonoid gasket may as well do both it all in the same area and better accessibility to the selonoid if you remove distributor anyway, my selonoid gaskets $16.50 distributor o ring $2.50 and water outlet cover gasket $2.00 so for $21.00 you can do all 3 at once save time, last suggestion and why your video is so good is the broken bolt, those are 10mm heads and I believe 6mm threads nothing but horror stories online of people breaking them off same bolts water outlet cover, best tool will be a 10 mm wrench with a ratchet hand tighten and 1\4 turn no more you can always tighten a little if sepage if you break those boots which is supper easy to do with a ratchet you will be screwed, make a day of it do distributor o ring and vtec selonoid gasket at same time remove distributor then do vtec solenoid then put distributor back on after replacing o ring
    Thank you best video on the subject

    Hello, thanx for the video.. I just finally figured this out after elimination.. To all that may not know how to figure this out, i would say this, Wipe all the oil you can, for clean surface.. Drive and then look for fresh oil.. Next where does it come from, well if its the vtech valveit will spill down over top of transmission mostly over the rear section.. Some can pool under distributor and run down front.. Just because there is oil under distributor does not mean its distributor O-Rings.. Trust me on this.. I wiped off vtech valve top and bottom.. I Started car after it had been sitting for hours, walla!!, It was spilling out one small area of the top of the valve.. Right where top mates to bottom... Interesting enough, i wiped that oil off and it almost stopped leaking completely.. It was only leaking under higher pressure start up and when driving for awhile.. So the leak could be small and you dont see it leaking.. This is a courtesy to all who may have spent hours looking for leak with no luck.. This could be it and its a situation where i was lucky to see it happen.. Best of luck all!!!

      It was a a pain in the @$* but I got it out. I cut a line in the broke piece with a Dremel tool. A screwdriver or ratchet wouldn't fit and since it broke while I was putting it back in it didn't have any pressure on it. I ended up getting it out with a screwdriver tip and my fingets lol

    In this video, the gasket between the upper and lower pieces was still in decent shape. The bolt was broken in the process of reinstalling the solenoid, and was not the cause for the leak. The cause of the leak was, rather, the lower gasket as is apparently common on this vehicle.

    Hi.. Yours is one of the very few videos out there on vtec solenoid and boy, have I checked. My car is a 2009 Honda Accord LX. Will the solenoid be located at same spot as yours? I've combed Google for the location but nothing's turned up.Reason is, I had my car scanned for the check engine light and I was told the Solenoid Valve is the culprit.

    • @jungleking007Channel
      @jungleking007Channel  8 лет назад

      would need more information on vehicle to look. find out engine size, auto/manual trans, 2 door/ 4 door. Some parts places need this to find location. Motor configurations are different from series to series, which means location will change. There are some online stores that have diagrams to view that will show you location.

    Nicely done video, 'non-professional' mechanic status aside. ; ] Just a thought: if you happen to live within a reasonable distance of a 'local' dealership, you might benefit from a cost and time standpoint with regard to sourcing parts, but there are several good online OEM Honda 'stores' as well. Many are the Internet presence of bigger 'local' dealers. If you don't get beaten up with shipping and handling costs -- especially for tiny items that weight little -- these places can be great. Usually quick fulfillment times, too, being that we live in a 'gotta have it yesterday' world of pampered consumers. ; ] I've used HondaPartsUnlimited, Majestic Honda, and CheaperHondaParts with excellent results.

    • @jungleking007Channel
      @jungleking007Channel  8 лет назад

      The parts department's around me are usually pretty good about getting what I need, but this time around I had to source a bolt quickly. luckily the hardware store keeps a good supply of bolts that were close enough. If the time was there then believe me, I would have been looking for the cheapest alternative for OE parts. Thanks for watching!

      @@indigo_dreamz I replaced the valve cover gasket and I got it the lateral plastic plug with a new oring. In fact, I bought an upgrading plug in aluminium and replace it. Also, I replaced the vtec solenoid gasket too, But the poluted clutch should be replaced for a better work. Regards from Mexico.

      No leak since this repair up until it was totaled a few months ago. Leak stopped after replacing the seals and the broken bolt. Thanks for watching!

      Believe it is called the "variable timing solenoid gasket". I put the Honda part numbers in the description. I would suggest going to the dealer parts department for this. Good Luck!

    What kind of lube/grease did you use for the gaskets?

      Think it was just standard motor oil. Just a thin coat is all that is needed.

      If I'm looking at the right motor and transmission, it would be an internal filter. May want to check with the local Honda dealer for more information or locate an exploded view of the motor and transmission for his vehicle to know for sure.

    Would this oil leak cause oil on top of the transmission? Towards the front?

    • @jungleking007Channel
      @jungleking007Channel  6 лет назад +2

      yes, it was dripping down onto the transmission housing and flowing forward. Originally thought it was the distributor housing but the leak was coming from further back.

    • @propaneandpropaneaccessori3446
      @propaneandpropaneaccessori3446 6 лет назад

      I replaced my distributer cause it crapped on me. So I know it's not that gasket, gotta be vtec gaskets. I also have coolant issue where driving on highway temp fluctuates from half to about 5/8ths. Then next morning after car is cooled down radiator is still under pressure and coolant is all in overflow tank, does not return to radiator. This only happens on the highway. I read forums and people say head gasket but I don't think it is that, you habe any insight?

    • @Fatherbedtimestories
      @Fatherbedtimestories 6 лет назад

      Try checking the coolant hose under the distributor. If you have an oil leak on top of it the oil that drips down causes the hose to wear down prematurely and rupture

    Took my car to the mechanic to get new radiator, new hoses, new thermostat and now he’s telling me I’m leaking oil from my distributor and vtec solinoid

      That's not good... Not sure where else to look except the cam cover, maybe a crack, of something it's in between the mating surface and those new gaskets.

      Looks the same as my 2002 Accord which is leaking. I'm repairing mine this Tuesday 6/13/17.
      I found my oil down a quart and added one. A few days later it was down two quarts. This is a serious problem if a person isn't familiar with their Ass.

    do you know how to fix the dipstick tube on a 99 civic whiles i was checking the oil in my car i noticed when i took the dipstick out the tube would pull up with the dipstick which i know it shouldn't do and then i noticed all the oil leaking out all over theres a rubber seal at the bottom of that tube but i dont know what its called or how to fix it...... if anyone knows what im talkin about and can please help me i would really appreciate it thanks

    • @jungleking007Channel
      @jungleking007Channel  7 лет назад

      Most oil dipstick tubes have an O'ring at the end where the tube inserts into a port on the oil pan or base of the engine block to seal from leakage, as well as one bolt that holds the tube stable off a bracket somewhere on it. Sounds like the bracket broke off and was only being held in be the o'ring. Would suggest doing a (preferred search engine) search of your year/make/model and oil dipstick tube, and see what images and diagrams pull up just to gain bearings on the situation. Might be best to either talk to a dealer ship for a replacement(o'ring or whole tube) or check out your local salvage yard to see if there is a good one you can pull. Hope this helps. Good Luck!

    It doesn't look like there is an oil leak at the solenoid, i see no evidence of fresh oil or old oil built up from leaking. Unless you cleaned it up before this video i would say your problem is elsewhere.

    • @jungleking007Channel
      @jungleking007Channel  7 лет назад +4

      Didn't get a good angle of the leak. It was leaking from underneath the valve. The oil was traveling along the top of the transmission housing and down the front which originally made me think the distributor was the issue, but after changing the solenoid seals(and the one bolt that broke) as you see here. the leak vanished.
