@@MrWalker1000 Honestly, that statement doesn't carry as much weight as it did a few decades ago. My friends have a 2007 Pilot, 2007 Mazda 6, 2008 Civic Hybrid, 2006 Nissan Altima, another 07 Mazda 6, a 2008 Mazda Tribute, and a 2012 Genesis. All of them are going mechanically strong. It really does come down to how the car is treated and how well it's maintained. Personally I've got a 2014 Ford Escape that I love to pieces. It's had the coolant reservoir changed at year 5. Otherwise, it's been 2 C$80 scheduled maintenances a year, nothing more.

Hi Ivan, Hope you're well ? are you still driving the CX-5. Have you thought about new CX-60 thats out in September. Currently work at Mazda Gloucester. Would be happy to answer any questions you have. Regards Omar
Mazda's of late are all good,. Driver's cars with decent quality and a solid price. Only real let down is the engines are a bit outdated. They can keep the purist naturally aspirated engines for the MX-5, Mazda 2 and pushing it a bit on the Mazda 3. The family cars definitely need more modern/ efficient engines and no a 2.5 l turbo is not practical unless its making above 200kw, which Mazda is not doing even in the 6 and CX-9. Downsize forced induction and electrical assistance is the way to go.
True about the interior quality and design, it's simple and beautiful. However not so about the engine and transmission. Their skyactive engines have a poor reliability record and are one of the most notorious engines to fix. Same goes with their transmission. If you are planning to keep your vehicle 3-400000 miles new skyactive Mazdas are not a good choice. In the long run, you don't give a crap about the interior quality but the reliability. Hence Toyota is still king on the hill.
2019 Mazda 3. The 2018 one is irrelevant now, as they're only on run-out before the 2019 comes out April/May. Depending on your market, you will get the SkyActiv-X engine later. The Europeon market is first, then Asia, Australasia, then America last. The 2019 3 is the first of Mazda's 2nd Gen SkyActiv cars, and so far, it looks really good!
The interior quality comprehensively SHITS all over the latest gen Volkswagen cars, which have really dropped the quality ball with their current generations.
Totally agree. I was really disappointed with the Tiguan, although I suspect it will hold up better despite its more plastic feel if you keep your cars for a few years. On a PCP deal I'd have the CX-5 and then I can hand it back if it's deteriorated at the end of lease ;)
@@timprice5 Nothing compares to the new Arteon. I remember watching it for a few weeks when they got a preview model at my local dealership. Then I had the opportunity to get in one. That interior looked premium for a $20k car from 2014. If it wasn't for the digital cluster I swear it was a swap from the Polo.
Agree. My wife has always had VW polo's. Last year looked at new polo. Didn't like the design or fit and finish, so she bought a new Mazda 2. It's been brilliant.
@wird klap kbps is the quality of audio formats(80,160,320) Spotify typically use a bitrate of 160 kbps, which is less than that of MP3s. If you spring for Spotify Premium, you’ll still only have access to 320 kbps tracks, which is equivalent to MP3s. Tidal is one of the only streaming service that streams in lossless CD quality.
@wird klap you'd be surprised how big of a difference it makes, though I'm sure the average person cant tell the difference and the convenience of Spotify is worth the trade off.

"not easy to use" spend 5 minutes in it and it's easy Matt! What you need to understand is that the money has been spent on the things that really matter - driving dynamics, a decent engine and quality parts. So what if the entertainment system is a little old-fashioned? A screen larger than that is totally unnecessary anyway! My point is that mazda is a small automotive company compared to someone like Volkswagen, but they quite frankly produce much more reliable, fun and better to drive cars.
Maybe the infotainment ist not important for you, but for many car buyers it is. We use smartphones, tablets and computers ervery day and they do not cost 27000£. Why sould a car that costs that much have a sluggy software, UX and a screen with bad resolution? It's part of the car, as well as the seats, boot capacity and the fuel consumption. It's only right that Matt is criticizing this.
LMAO why are you so upset, if you can get better infotainment with the competition then he needs to point it out. I own a Mazda CX-5 and yes, all is forgiven for the driving dynamics, it’s a great vehicle to drive daily.
@@chrizz754 lol get a Kia or Hyundai with an amazing infotainment center. Oh wait the motor will last 200k if you're lucky. Mazda is smart for worrying about the quality of the car not and spending tons of money on pointless things like an infotainment center. Before you say it's not pointless, again by a Kia or Hyundai and you will not give a shit about their nice touch screens when your motor is blown
@@chrizz754 if you are thirsty, buy a drink ,if you are hungry, get food, you don't complain that beer isn't filling enough. ofc he should point it out but foucus and priority must be taken when budget is limited
I got my wife 2019 CX-5 Reserve and I absolutely love it myself to the point I felt a bit of jealousy but I do get to drive it around quite a bit. Here's what I found I liked and didn't like about it. The quarter panels on it have terrible visibility so it's a good thing it came with the blind spot monitoring and the backup camera, they help and essentially mitigate this issue. The lock/unlock feature used by pressing the little button on the door handle is LAME! Mazda should have adopted the one where all you do is place your hand in the door handle and it automatically unlocks and as you walk away it locks or you can manually do it by pressing a spot on the door handle. I have this feature on my 2018 Mustang and also seen it on BMWs and I absolutely love it! It feel much more fluid, polished and elegant. Another issue I have with it is the dashboard lighting. When it gets dark out and the lights come on in the cockpit, it was looking dark and gloomy so I tried to adjust them to look a bit brighter but when I turned the little adjuster they go from 0-100, there is no median and that really irks me. It either kills your eyes or they're a bit too dark for comfort. I'm not sure what Mazda was thinking but this is a terrible missed detail in an otherwise amazing and fun car. Here's another thing and some people are probably going to bash me but I don't care...the tires are too narrow. This car is FAST and this is coming from a Mustang GT and BMW owner. When you drop the pedal this thing had wheel spin and even slides to the point I have found myself sliding unintentionally trying to do a U-turn to get into traffic fast. I think it needs wider rubber than the simple 225 it has, after all this is at the top of the range. Also, the corners is where the tires also are noticed to be too narrow. I think something more substantial would really help this car, something like a 245 or even 235 would have helped a lot. The rims are very nice btw, it's just a shame they're a bit too narrow. I get this is not a sports car but trust me, it drives and feels like one, don't let the outer shell fool you. Heck it is just as fun to drive as my BMW if not more. The Mazda GPS is weird and don't like it but one thing I do like is how on the right side it shows points of interests like distance to nearest gas stations for example. The reason I say it's weird is because the usual GPS like Waze shows you going up and adjusts as you make turns and such where you always seem like you're going up and it makes you feel you're going in the right direction but this one will show you going horizontal or down and it's just weird cause it down't give you a sense of direction. It's hard to explain, you'll just have to try it on a long trip. Although the infotainment center gets annoying when you're driving and can't touch it to surf through settings and such, once I got used to it it becomes second nature and not obstructive at all. I will say that comparing this to my Mustang's Ford Sync 3, the touch screen makes things a hell of a lot easier. My dad noticed it when we went on a little trip and setup Waze using Android Auto on my Mustang and he saw how quickly I did it. He even commented how quickly and easy I made it look which even I noticed it was easier on the Ford than the Mazda. Again, it isn't a bad system but it is a bit sluggish and the no touch while you're driving makes things bit less easy to navigate. The worse thing about it is the reverse camera is very grainy, and I wish it had better quality like a 1080p in this day in age. I have to say with all it's flaws and no car is perfect, this little SUV is awesome and lots of fun!
@@mbenton6 I've got one on an 18 plate and love it. Very nice to drive. The sound deadening is good, all the controls fall easily to hand and everyone I meet says it looks class, inside and out. It pulls well when you get moving and always feels stable. Change the SatNav to 3d mode and the arrow will be virticle and easier to follow.
Gorgeous looking car and will be very reliable with it being Mazda. What is it however you have against a CD player? Lol not everyone uses Spotify and if u have a car that doesn't have Bluetooth media and just Bluetooth connectivity for phone use, then you need a CD player, would rather it has one and not use it, than not have one at all as an option. It's really not as if it's making the car less by it being there?
Agreed but if this car has Bluetooth what is the point of the cd player? Cd player is useful when it's the only way to play music. Even the most computers don't come with cd player anymore.
Agreed. As long as it doesn't come at the expense of other things, I don't see why it's such an awful idea. Elderly people may not know how to use Bluetooth but do know how to put a CD in.
@@01PvL98 agree, however its not really going to be a bad thing if the car has both, just in the off chance u may find and old CD and want to listen with out creating a play list first or be paying a monthly subscription to some on line music app, to then play in the car on Bluetooth, also some cars Bluetooth is only for phone use and to play music have to have it plugged in to car which mean cables in the way. If its not at the expense of any other item being taken out of the car then I really don't see it as a bad thing having it in the car really.
I have never seen a Mazda CX-5 with only 1 exchaust actually, in Finland all models have a dual and AWD is available for petrol also. Overall, this car seems to be a underdog. it's a small car company compared to VW, Toyota etc.. but Mazda's deliver high quality products with good reliability and the "only?" Japanese brand without a CVT automatic if i'm not mistaken?
yes..the only japanese without the annoying CVT! thats why i love Mazda. even tho toyota honda tends to back to 8 speed 10 speed auto for the camry and accord.
Nissan have just replaced the CVT in the Nissan Qashqai with a 7 speed DCT so it's not the only Japanese brand in this class not offering a CVT anymore
Sevy In fact twin exhaust is on the “old” version. The 2019 has had some engine modifications, for instance addblue for the 2.2D, that has been pushed to 184bhp instead of 160 before. The exhaust system has been revised as well, so that the CX-5 is now ahead of EU regulation for pollution.
Mazda is really making good cars, it's surprising that this car is from Japan. It's practical, fun to drive, fuel economy is bloody good and it's reliable for me it ticks all the right boxes. We want a review on the Cx-9
i-Eloop is for (modest) fuel economy gain as you mentioned, but also for (modest) performance gain. The extra-beefy alternator is on a clutch, so that when there is sufficient charge stored and the driver wants acceleration, the alternator gets disengaged so that more of the engine power is available to drive the wheels.

Funny how some comments express irritation with the presentation style yet they refer to the numerous carwow videos they don’t care for... here’s a thought, watch something else.
The reason why so many Japanese car still comes with a CD player is due to fact that the music industry in japan still prefer distributing new songs with disc rather than streaming or downloading from the internet
@A real bisexual petrol-head yes he is definitely right Japanese people like using physical hardware for music they are still the biggest market for cds and cassettes even
it would be appropriate to say that japanese prefer a high resolution audio with high dynamic range and channels, rather that an mp3 BTed from a mobile divice.

Great review there Matt, it’s good to see comparisons across specs, as the car wow intros always start with the ‘starting at’ price but the vehicle in the video - especially German ones, are always ‘upgraded’.
Had my CX 5 for over a year now with no issues. Must agree that the infotainment system does need some work, needs a bigger screen with better graphics and a less complicated nav system. Solid and very reliable car.
Other people: i choose Mazda because it looks good, drives good, cool tech & features, and real exhaust tip Me: i choose Mazda cuz i can hack the infotainment system 😬
It's interesting no one mentions that Mazda has the most advanced petrol engine technology that a car could get. Any mechanical engineer such as myself who learned about it would tell you the same, they made something almost impossible, possible.
@@yomista Sorry I couldn't understand your question? Are you asking which engine in particular? I think they called it Skyactive X, basically they achieved the theoretical value, which was thought to be impossible by all German auto makers.
Here in North America we don't have the same trim level selections as those available in Europe and we don't have a diesel option, at all. Instead, Mazda offers the CX-5 with the same 2.5L turbo petrol engine that's in the Mazda6 and the CX-9. Otherwise, though, the vehicles are comparable. But here's a test. What does the "U" in CUV/SUV stand for? If you said, "Utility," you earn a gold star. (If you said "ugly" that's another discussion.) And by that standard the CX-5 falls seriously short. (I'll stick to cubic feet measurement since we Americans are challenged by arithmetic and believe that metric measurement is some sort of foreign plot. ) The CX-5 offers 59.6 cubic feet of overall cargo space behind the first row of seats. The Honda CRV provides 25% more in a vehicle about one inch longer! In fact, the CX-5's overall cargo space is only about six cubic feet more than a VW Golf, a vehicle that's a foot shorter than the Mazda. So if a crossover's looks appeal to you, (there's no accounting for taste), the CX-5 is a stylish choice. But if actual versatility and "utility" in a cUv is what you're after, there are better choices in this category.
Just for anyone who doesn't know, nappa leather is smoother, breathable and softer and usually comes from sheep, goats or calves, it is much softer than cowhide. The latter of course is much tougher. Nappa is often the choice for clothing and items such as handbags. It is not suitable for providing abrasion protection, for example motorcycle clothing.
If you've ever driven a CX-5, you know it just gives you that good feeling that's hard to explain. If it had a better infotainment system it would truly be a fantastic SUV. The looks are just great, especially in the glorious Mazda red.
Hi Simon Hope you're well ? are you still driving the CX-5. Have you thought about new CX-60 thats out in September. Currently work at Mazda Gloucester. Would be happy to answer any questions you have. Regards Omar
Would appreciate a comparison review with other SUVs in this popular category.. Toyota Rav4, Honda CRV, Ford Kuga, Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, Subaru Forester and etc.
I like this new review style, very thorough! Only one small complaint, the music while you explain the different trim lines is a bit too loud, also in some other parts of the video it makes it harder to take in all the information that is being told!
I have if for 1 year now. You should just go ahead and buy it. I tried everything in that price range and nothing comes close in terms of interior quality, sound insulation and handling ...unless you add 20k or so.
I love the new review style, especially the trim comparisons, worth d extra mbs plus Mat O.C's on point as usual with d metal trim on d door mirror switches 👍👍👍👍
I wish my 2017 had a CD player. Here in the States, they don’t come with one. I am tired of the compressed sound from the modern sources. The “weird” space in the rear armrest is meant for the seat warmer controls in higher trims.
I shortlisted it and then bought it 😉. Like any other car it has some anoying things, like deathpedal without cover...but overall it is a great car for money...very good diesel, suspension, interior...and to be honest, people like the exterior more than some other premium brands...
It’s a 25k£ car that rivals with more expensive ones. Mazdas are fun to drive, reliable and cheap to run. Also they are sexy cars. I had Audi’s, BMW and VW but they can’t compare to my Mazda.
Very sexy car from Mazda. To think this is a car that came out some while back and you can see how miles ahead they were of the competition. Definitely love how Mazda puts the driver first, and all the other stuff really seems complementary to that goal. A dying breed in this new age when most cars make this sublime skill so artificial with too much assistance systems. Pretty sure a facelift will iron out these tiny misgivings.... as has been seen in the new Mazda 3. Eagerly waiting for your take on the new Mazda 3 😁
The 2l petrol is hungry? I've got a 2017 2nd generation one and easy drive it with less than 7l/100km, or under 8l/100km on the german Autobahn with 150km/h+ where possible and allowed. I've choosen the petrol one because the diesels are hungry with roughly the same consumption. Besides, there are 4 engines available in Germany, you can get a 2l petrol 165HP with either FWD manual, AWD manual or AWD auto, a 2,5l petrol with 194HP with either FWD auto or AWD auto, the 150HP diesel without AdBlu with either FWD manual, FWD auto, AWD manual or AWD auto and the 184HP diesel with AdBlu and either AWD manual or AWD auto.
Why would be a CD player a bad or even a stupid idea ? At least Mazda know a Digital CD will always produce a better sound than Spotify or RUclips or whatsoever. So owning a Bose sound system AND a CD makes sense, quite the contrary ! And they give you the choice, you can listen to a CD or to a Spotify playlist, the cars allows you both. Nice to see they also give you the choice between a manual or an automatic gear. Not like these European car makers that impose automatic gears...
I almost freaked out to that M/T variant, how come Mazda couldn't take that option in the Philippines despite being a typical car instead, being only available for the Dmax-based next gen BT-50 4x2
Hiring one atm for a week. Curious thing. Rarer than the default qashqai. Its nice (ish) inside. Very quiet and also very slow and fairly thirsty. Skyactiv g or whatever it is does not do wonders for economy even driving like an oap. Also some shockingly cheap bits fuel flap switch feels like it will beak after several pulls. As for the filler cap hinge its woeful.
Yeh liked the town driving and reverse parking, also the overtaking was informative, the also consider alternatives is very good so you can look at various similar typed cars 👍

Hence Toyota is still king on the hill.
please do a mazda 3 2019 review. :D
2019 3s are available here in Canada now.
2019 with Skyactive X, the current European engines are nothing to write home about.
ruclips.net/video/vuEgfmBXHFA/видео.html there bro
The interior quality comprehensively SHITS all over the latest gen Volkswagen cars, which have really dropped the quality ball with their current generations.
Totally agree. I was really disappointed with the Tiguan, although I suspect it will hold up better despite its more plastic feel if you keep your cars for a few years.
On a PCP deal I'd have the CX-5 and then I can hand it back if it's deteriorated at the end of lease ;)

Nothing compares to the new Arteon.
I remember watching it for a few weeks when they got a preview model at my local dealership. Then I had the opportunity to get in one.
That interior looked premium for a $20k car from 2014. If it wasn't for the digital cluster I swear it was a swap from the Polo.
@@adam145 it's more expensive
@@MrWalker1000 he probably meant second-hand
Agree. My wife has always had VW polo's. Last year looked at new polo. Didn't like the design or fit and finish, so she bought a new Mazda 2. It's been brilliant.
I use CDs, Matt! Still the best sound quality you can get in cars :)
@wird klap the highest quality Spotify outputs is 320kbps, and that's only for modern songs.
Couldn't agree more. As any audiophile will know the best sound reproduction comes from CD.
@wird klap you'd be surprised how big of a difference it makes, though I'm sure the average person cant tell the difference and the convenience of Spotify is worth the trade off.
@wird klap No, no, just no
Thank you Matt - Love the longer format - Been waiting for the CX-5 for a while
This is my favorite car of the year. I really like the design and fuel efficiency

Mr. Hendry.
Your take on the 2l petrol?
I found a 2019 model that is very well priced...
I test drove it twice, trying to convince myself it's a reliable car. But it's a bit dull. In the end I bought SEAT Ateca.
I own a Mazda CX5 2018 model And it's now 2022 and never had a problem with It full stop ✋️
And they actually released new version of this system in new mazda 3 and it’s better
All of your opinion about this car was all negative. I didnt see on thing positive you said about it.

I've got one on an 18 plate and love it.
James Mccormack agreed
Agreed but if this car has Bluetooth what is the point of the cd player? Cd player is useful when it's the only way to play music. Even the most computers don't come with cd player anymore.
Agreed. As long as it doesn't come at the expense of other things, I don't see why it's such an awful idea. Elderly people may not know how to use Bluetooth but do know how to put a CD in.
Agree 100% !!
"You're ending resting your arm on the bottle..." Than put the bottle in the left cup holder ! Problem solved.
The weird storage area in the rear armful is used for the rear seat heater controls when fitted. Could always be used to hold a phone sideways though.
@@BontaAngel I really hope Mazda will stick to the dual exhaust system... it's the best looking always!
It also uses aisin seiki which is the most reliable in auto transmission in the world
Mazda is really making good cars, it's surprising that this car is from Japan.

Like what?
Just for anyone who doesn't know, nappa leather is smoother, breathable and softer and usually comes from sheep, goats or calves, it is much softer than cowhide. The latter of course is much tougher. Nappa is often the choice for clothing and items such as handbags. It is not suitable for providing abrasion protection, for example motorcycle clothing.

If you've ever driven a CX-5, you know it just gives you that good feeling that's hard to explain. If it had a better infotainment system it would truly be a fantastic SUV. The looks are just great, especially in the glorious Mazda red.

You should have gone for the white interior rather than black-ish. Much better presentation.
