Hi there! I'm 21 and I played the cello for a few years growing up. After having a really awful teacher I wound up giving up on it, but last night I ordered a new cello and decided to pick it back up again. I'm very excited, but also a bit nervous that I have forgotten how to play. It'll take some time to get back into the groove of things with it, but I'm very excited. My goal is to be able to play Für Elise flawlessly lol.
I used to play cello as a kid, started out enthusiastic and found it easy, and then I guess it wasn't that easy anymore so I did quit. I have been playing with the thought of playing again for a couple of years and just watching your video made me realise that I do remember a lot of this still 20 years later. Excited to learn again!
That's wonderful!! I've heard it's a lot like riding a bicycle. Most of the technique comes back to you rather quickly. I hope you enjoy picking it up again!

Can you make more cello "How to" videos? I have a cello, but don't have access to lessons. I have taught myself to play the piano by ear and have played for more than twenty years. I encourage you to search the web for cello teachers who work via Skype. I know this sounds crazy, but you could use the teacher can observe you and you can see how they would like you to improve. Good Luck!

Hi Dear Sarah, could you do a tutorial or advice on how to correctly press down two strings at once for the Left Hand. I'm struggling badly , whenever I hold down 2 strings at once, the middle string can't be in contact with the fingerboard properly and I can't get a sound from it not matter how hard I tried to press it down. I'm not sure if this is normal at the beginning or if I have finger defects :( Any advice please? Would appreciate it lots !

+Marina Márquez Pérez I am glad they are helping! First finger is placed a whole step above the open string. So if the top string is open A, then finger one is B. Finger two is C. Finger three is C#. Finger four is D.

Oh absolutely, definitely keep going for it! You're off to a good start with the C Major. Once you finish with that, going through the circle of fifths will help you learn the rest of your scales in order.

Sarah Joy Well, it is so kind of you to answer because I do have some questions) The point is that I'm not new to musical instruments. I used to play bass for almost 7 years. Then I switched to acoustic guitar and started writing some kind of my own music. So I can definetely say that I know where the sound comes from and how and so on. But the point is that I decided to learn another instrument. I wanted to take a try on a double bass, but I guess it's enough "bass" for me. AndI really want to try cello. The questions are simple: How to choose an instrument considering the fact that I will learn how to play it and then I will definetely use it in recordings? And is it really necessary to learn it with someone guiding? Because Im pretty sure that even such high-class instruments can be "mastered" on your own too like guitars and basses? P.S. Sorry for my bad english.
I use the cello in almost all of my recordings. It's a very versatile instrument! I would suggest taking lessons. A person can teach themselves, but it will take a very very long time. It is actually much more difficult than the guitar (not talking about classical guitar). The bow is difficult to master. One can reach a certain level, but to become a decent player, I would suggest having a teacher. I hope this helps!
Sarah Joy Yes, I expected that answer. Because I already heard that playing with a bow is really harder than it looks. But how to choose an instrument? I mean there are a lot of them. They are made from different wood and so on. Different sizes.

Hi. Got my cello (a rental) a week ago. Open strings is going pretty well, taking into account that I've never done this before ;-) 1st finger in position 1 on all strings is also coming out ok (not great, but already ok), but I'm having problems with 3rd and 4th fingers. The sound is a whole lot more screechy and scratchy when for instance I place fingers 3 or 4 on the C-string. It gets worse on the other 3 strings. Now, the good news is that it's already not as bad as it was in the beginning of the week, but still ... here's something I would like to request. Could you do a video focussing on the left hand, please? The do's and don'ts. How to hold the hand, how to move it around when switching strings. Perhaps some very simple exercises for a novice like me? Thanks :-)
+Sarah Joy Thanks for considering this :-) A few things that I caught or still catch myself in doing: - I started out last week with the thumb of my left hand pointing up against the neck of the cello; the whole length of my thumb supported the cello. - Although I now try to avoid that, after a while, my thumb "reverts" into that same position (a lot of practice should help solve that) - On other times, I had the neck of my cello rest in the space between thumb and #1 finger (a bit as if I were supporting a violin) - Probably as a result of this, fingers #3 and #4 have a hard time "hitting" the string at the right place. For instance, on de C-string, #3 would play E-flat more easily than E. I don't seem to have this problem when I focus on correct thumb position. - Even with the thumb in the better position, with fingers #3 and #4 immediately "landing on the right note", the sound comes out like a painful whine. Likely a matter of not putting the right pressure on the string? => I was actually surprised that one has to press fairly hard. And a question too: what part of the finger pushes down the string? The tip, right below the nail? Or the softer spot just below? Basically, how does the finger land on the string. Cheers, Jacques.

For now, a condensed analysis of what you're doing is this: - fourth finger is naturally the weakest. I'll show some finger building exercises. - Use the pad of your finger. (not the very tip) Mostly, you just want to make sure that your fingers stay curved - thumb should be entirely relaxed, and be placed in between first and second finger I know this is brief, but hopefully the next video will explain more thoroughly!!
Thanks for the tips. Especially the use of the pad rather than the tip is useful. I tended to use the tips, as they are not as soft as the pad and make the sound come out less scratchy, so I'll focus on that part already :-) Looking forward to the video :-)
I'm going to keep up with you because I'm picking up a Cello so that I can learn. I've always found the Cello and Double Bass to produce wonderful sound.

+Sarah Joy Will do, I decided do to small space in the facility I'm in I'll take up Viola first and work on Cello once I'm in my own place. As it stands I'm a veteran in a program to help homeless vets get back on their own feet, they have me a job and helping in other aspects. Reason for wanting to play an instrument was because it was a goal I set for myself and I want to keep it. I find it so relaxing watching and listening to violin all the way up to double bass. The instruments are not see as much as they should. Thank you for responding back to me, if you have advice on viola or know someone who could help do hit me back up.

Both instruments are challenging in their own ways. I would have to say cello is more difficult in my opinion though. It takes quite a while to just get your bowing technique correct let alone getting left hand technique down. I do not say that to discourage you from learning though!

I wish I had you as a music teacher in school (someone with passion) ..we barely have a music program when it used to be so big. There's maybe less than 20 kids in band. I played steel pans but wanted to learn more. No one ever cared. They only care about football. Pretty sure if they could the school would sell the instruments just to pay for football. I graduated this month so now I guess it does not matter. I'm learning violin and guitar on my own now.
I completely understand that. Where I'm from, hardly anyone cares about music either. Like you said, it's all about football. :/ Even though you've graduated, surely there must be a community orchestra that you could join at some point. Might be something to research!

Holly Haas Hi! Honestly, it depends on how tall you are. Unless you're tall for a 7th grader, I would suggest a half size or three quarter size. Keep on trying to find a private teacher! In the mean time, get acquainted with the instrument (by just using your ear) and just keep watching RUclips tutorials. :)

You rub it on the bow to make the hair sticky. When the hair is sticky, it is able to grab the string causing it to vibrate faster than your eye can see. These vibrations produce the sound. 3. Beginner cello - $700 - $2,000 Intermediate - $2,000 - $3,000 Advanced - $3,000 - $ 10,000 Professional - $10,000 + 4. An expensive one ;) 5. Very much so That sounds like an awesome instrument!! Awesome! Thanks for sharing! Before your lesson, it might help to know some basic scales. Whatever your level of preparation, however, just have fun! I find that I get a lot more out of lessons when I'm relaxed and at ease.
I've played violin for about 5 years now (had a teacher for two years, beyond then self taught) and I am still deciding whether I want to try cello as well. The price is a little deterring, but the sound is so beautiful! I've noticed that when people play cello they move the bow A LOT less than when playing violin. I've seen people play 4-6 notes on one "bow pull" whereas on violin the most I play is two, maybe three on an extra slow song. Why is this?

I do not play any string instruments but I want the cello to be my next instrument. I had a few questions though. 1: is it very hard to learn? I don't get into instruments depending on how hard or easy they are, but I would like to prepare myself and have more of an idea of what I'm getting into. 2. It usually takes 3 to 5 years to become reasonably proficient on the cello. 2. Yes, absolutely. It can be very painful! 3. I am actually posting a whole video on how to shop for a cello in a couple of weeks! Other than that, all of the other tips that I can think of are in my other cello lesson videos. There's a whole playlist :D But I will definitely make a specific video for you on what kind of cello to get.

I will never say that anyone is too old to become a professional musician. However, it is much much much more difficult. You will need an exceptionally good teacher, will need to catch up on repertoire, will need to gain orchestral experience, and basically build your resume from the ground up. I don't want this to discourage you though! If it's something you're willing to sacrifice for, go for it.

Iseult Licatese I was five years old, but it's never too late to start! One of the best cellists I've met started when he was in the 8th grade. It might take extra determination and hard work, but go for it!!
Sarah thank you for this video. Ive been looking into learning the cello, its something I've wanted to do for some time now. I have question about holding the bow, I have nerve damage in my right hand and cannot feel my pinky, and have limited use. Is there some way to compensate for this? or will this make it impossible to play?
+Andrew sorry for this late response! I think it might prove challenging, but no, I don't think it's impossible. The bow basically is controlled by thumb, first finger, and pinky. I think, however, that you will be able to manipulate the bow alright so long as you can apply pressure with pinky. I hope this answered your question!

Im glad it can help! Make sure you have a good chair! Don't sit on one that is too soft or too low. Whenever you hold the instrument with your knees, the cello should really just rest inside. There shouldn't be a lot of squeezing. Well, if you already have some musical background, you might figure it out to a certain point. If not, it will be much much harder. I would really suggest finding a teacher if you are serious about learning.

You mentioned in another post, that you have a 'metronome + drone' device that you really like. I see that many cellists practice with a metronome, and I have begun using one also, really helps. However, I'm not sure how or why you use a drone in your cello practice?
Hello Jim, A drone should be set to the tonic. As you play through the etude, scale, or piece, you should tune each note to this tonic pitch. Even professionals use this to keep their ears in top condition. One's intonation can start to degrade over time and a drone is a good way to prevent this from happening.

Jae Harwood Hi Jae! Sorry for the late reply! This comment slipped past me. Well, definitely get a 4/4 (assuming you're a full grown adult). Where are you located? I might know someone in the area. When buying your instrument, make sure that the strings are not too far above the fingerboard. This problem is caused by the bridge being to tall. It can cause injury. Test out the pegs as well. Make sure they don't severely slip or stick. You can always take it to an instrument shop to get it set up correctly. ALWAYS play it first before buying. Don't just order one over the internet. There can be a lot of issues. I hope this helps!

So my 10 year son is going into 5th grade. In 4th he played the viola but decided he to play cello. So naturally he need to learn basic lessons before entering a new class. So my question is... how do I know if he’s sized properly? I feel like he’s struggling with the bow.
I play flute, and I've been wanting to play the cello for some time. I just bought a cello today for $20 from a friend. It's a bit smaller than yours, and I've been having some trouble tuning it. I have a tuner, but every time I had one string tuned, and went to another string, then went back to the first, the first string would be slightly flat again. How would you fix that?
Thank you for replying. What's putty, and where can I get some? The boy who sold me the cello also said something about rosalind (sp?) that you put on the bow to make the sound.
Also, the D string peg, when I tune it (sometimes, not so much now) would tighten the string, then go back to its original position, making the string way flat again. I had to literally push the peg into the peg box to make sure it stayed, and I'm not sure if that's good for the cello.
Hello Sarah, thx for your videos! I'm a cello beginner. One thing that really frustrated me is that whenever I play A string, I always feel my arm is too short and my wrist gets extra tight. Do u have any suggestions for that?
That is one of the most common problems for beginners I've noticed. Keep your shoulder dropped, and pronate your fingers. Your wrist can bend slightly to accommodate for the angle. It's hard to say what else could be wrong without actually watching you play, but hopefully this can help. Watch yourself play in front of a mirror, and then compare it to someone else's playing. See if there are any visual differences.

The double bass is just another term for a stand up bass. The double bass is much larger than the cello! Its strings are in order: E, A, D, G. The Cello strings are: C, G, D, A. The bass has a much deeper sound and is lower down on the octave scale as well. I hope that could help!

Please make a Tutorial series. There are so many tutorial series for guitar learning. But almost none for cello learning. In some countries like ours there are hardly any ways to learn cello. Please do it for people like us.
I just started playing the cello a few days ago, and when I put my bow in the strings, it bounces a little and it sounds horrible. I have been trying really hard to stop (like pressing down and moving the bow slower), but the it keeps bouncing on the strings. I'm sorry, this is probably a stupid question, but I don't know how to fix it. Thanks in advance.
+Edie Hughes You might try putting on more rosin, and pressing more with the right hand first finger. Make sure that your hand is angled the right way. Might check out my video on the left hand. Hopefully that helps!

Hi Dear Sarah, could you do a tutorial or advice on how to correctly press down two strings at once for the Left Hand. I'm struggling badly , whenever I hold down 2 strings at once, the middle string can't be in contact with the fingerboard properly and I can't get a sound from it not matter how hard I tried to press it down. I'm not sure if this is normal at the beginning or if I have finger defects :( Any advice please? Would appreciate it lots !

Oh absolutely, definitely keep going for it! You're off to a good start with the C Major. Once you finish with that, going through the circle of fifths will help you learn the rest of your scales in order.

Sarah Joy Well, it is so kind of you to answer because I do have some questions)
The point is that I'm not new to musical instruments. I used to play bass for almost 7 years. Then I switched to acoustic guitar and started writing some kind of my own music. So I can definetely say that I know where the sound comes from and how and so on. But the point is that I decided to learn another instrument. I wanted to take a try on a double bass, but I guess it's enough "bass" for me. AndI really want to try cello.
The questions are simple:
How to choose an instrument considering the fact that I will learn how to play it and then I will definetely use it in recordings?
And is it really necessary to learn it with someone guiding? Because Im pretty sure that even such high-class instruments can be "mastered" on your own too like guitars and basses?
P.S. Sorry for my bad english.
I use the cello in almost all of my recordings. It's a very versatile instrument!
I would suggest taking lessons. A person can teach themselves, but it will take a very very long time. It is actually much more difficult than the guitar (not talking about classical guitar). The bow is difficult to master. One can reach a certain level, but to become a decent player, I would suggest having a teacher.

BallbreakerRUS This depends on your level of seriousness and how much you are willing to spend, but I think it's smart to start out with a student instrument. Hi. Got my cello (a rental) a week ago. Open strings is going pretty well, taking into account that I've never done this before ;-) 1st finger in position 1 on all strings is also coming out ok (not great, but already ok), but I'm having problems with 3rd and 4th fingers. The sound is a whole lot more screechy and scratchy when for instance I place fingers 3 or 4 on the C-string. It gets worse on the other 3 strings.
Now, the good news is that it's already not as bad as it was in the beginning of the week, but still ... here's something I would like to request. Could you do a video focussing on the left hand, please? The do's and don'ts. How to hold the hand, how to move it around when switching strings. Perhaps some very simple exercises for a novice like me?

A few things that I caught or still catch myself in doing:
- I started out last week with the thumb of my left hand pointing up against the neck of the cello; the whole length of my thumb supported the cello.
- Although I now try to avoid that, after a while, my thumb "reverts" into that same position (a lot of practice should help solve that)
- On other times, I had the neck of my cello rest in the space between thumb and #1 finger (a bit as if I were supporting a violin)
- Probably as a result of this, fingers #3 and #4 have a hard time "hitting" the string at the right place. For instance, on de C-string, #3 would play E-flat more easily than E. I don't seem to have this problem when I focus on correct thumb position.
- Even with the thumb in the better position, with fingers #3 and #4 immediately "landing on the right note", the sound comes out like a painful whine. Likely a matter of not putting the right pressure on the string? => I was actually surprised that one has to press fairly hard.
And a question too: what part of the finger pushes down the string? The tip, right below the nail? Or the softer spot just below? Basically, how does the finger land on the string.

+Amenhotep03 Hey there! You are asking all the right questions! I am actually filming the video for you right now, so watch out for it on Friday! For now, a condensed analysis of what you're doing is this:
- fourth finger is naturally the weakest. I'll show some finger building exercises.
- Use the pad of your finger. (not the very tip) Mostly, you just want to make sure that your fingers stay curved
- thumb should be entirely relaxed, and be placed in between first and second finger
I know this is brief, but hopefully the next video will explain more thoroughly!!
Thanks for the tips. Especially the use of the pad rather than the tip is useful. I tended to use the tips, as they are not as soft as the pad and make the sound come out less scratchy, so I'll focus on that part already :-)

+Sarah Joy Will do, I decided do to small space in the facility I'm in I'll take up Viola first and work on Cello once I'm in my own place. As it stands I'm a veteran in a program to help homeless vets get back on their own feet, they have me a job and helping in other aspects. Reason for wanting to play an instrument was because it was a goal I set for myself and I want to keep it. I find it so relaxing watching and listening to violin all the way up to double bass. The instruments are not see as much as they should. Thank you for responding back to me, if you have advice on viola or know someone who could help do hit me back up.

Both instruments are challenging in their own ways. I would have to say cello is more difficult in my opinion though. It takes quite a while to just get your bowing technique correct let alone getting left hand technique down. I do not say that to discourage you from learning though!

I wish I had you as a music teacher in school (someone with passion) ..we barely have a music program when it used to be so big. There's maybe less than 20 kids in band. I played steel pans but wanted to learn more. No one ever cared. They only care about football. Pretty sure if they could the school would sell the instruments just to pay for football. I graduated this month so now I guess it does not matter. I'm learning violin and guitar on my own now.
I completely understand that. Where I'm from, hardly anyone cares about music either. Like you said, it's all about football. :/ Even though you've graduated, surely there must be a community orchestra that you could join at some point. Might be something to research!

Holly Haas Hi! Honestly, it depends on how tall you are. Unless you're tall for a 7th grader, I would suggest a half size or three quarter size. Keep on trying to find a private teacher! In the mean time, get acquainted with the instrument (by just using your ear) and just keep watching RUclips tutorials. :)

2. It is made from tree sap. You rub it on the bow to make the hair sticky. When the hair is sticky, it is able to grab the string causing it to vibrate faster than your eye can see. These vibrations produce the sound.

Intermediate - $2,000 - $3,000
Advanced - $3,000 - $ 10,000
Professional - $10,000 +

Awesome! Thanks for sharing! Before your lesson, it might help to know some basic scales. Whatever your level of preparation, however, just have fun! I find that I get a lot more out of lessons when I'm relaxed and at ease.
I've played violin for about 5 years now (had a teacher for two years, beyond then self taught) and I am still deciding whether I want to try cello as well. The price is a little deterring, but the sound is so beautiful! I've noticed that when people play cello they move the bow A LOT less than when playing violin. I've seen people play 4-6 notes on one "bow pull" whereas on violin the most I play is two, maybe three on an extra slow song. Why is this?
I've never noticed that before. I think it probably has more to do with the pieces and styles, but maybe you're right. ??

I play the flute, piano, and for a short amount of time played the french horn. I do not play any string instruments but I want the cello to be my next instrument. I had a few questions though.
1: is it very hard to learn? I don't get into instruments depending on how hard or easy they are, but I would like to prepare myself and have more of an idea of what I'm getting into.
2. I know with string instruments like guitar cause calluses and are hard on your fingers, is the cello like this as well?

1. It is very difficult, but I have never played a wind instrument, so I'm not quite sure how it compares. It usually takes 3 to 5 years to become reasonably proficient on the cello.
2. Yes, absolutely. It can be very painful!
3. I am actually posting a whole video on how to shop for a cello in a couple of weeks! Other than that, all of the other tips that I can think of are in my other cello lesson videos. There's a whole playlist :D But I will definitely make a specific video for you on what kind of cello to get.

I will never say that anyone is too old to become a professional musician. However, it is much much much more difficult. You will need an exceptionally good teacher, will need to catch up on repertoire, will need to gain orchestral experience, and basically build your resume from the ground up. I don't want this to discourage you though! If it's something you're willing to sacrifice for, go for it.

Sarah thank you for this video. Ive been looking into learning the cello, its something I've wanted to do for some time now. I have question about holding the bow, I have nerve damage in my right hand and cannot feel my pinky, and have limited use. Is there some way to compensate for this? or will this make it impossible to play?
+Andrew sorry for this late response! I think it might prove challenging, but no, I don't think it's impossible. The bow basically is controlled by thumb, first finger, and pinky. I think, however, that you will be able to manipulate the bow alright so long as you can apply pressure with pinky. I hope this answered your question!

Make sure you have a good chair! Don't sit on one that is too soft or too low. Whenever you hold the instrument with your knees, the cello should really just rest inside. There shouldn't be a lot of squeezing.
Well, if you already have some musical background, you might figure it out to a certain point. If not, it will be much much harder. I would really suggest finding a teacher if you are serious about learning.

You mentioned in another post, that you have a 'metronome + drone' device that you really like. I see that many cellists practice with a metronome, and I have begun using one also, really helps. However, I'm not sure how or why you use a drone in your cello practice?
Hello Jim,
A drone should be set to the tonic. As you play through the etude, scale, or piece, you should tune each note to this tonic pitch. Even professionals use this to keep their ears in top condition. One's intonation can start to degrade over time and a drone is a good way to prevent this from happening.

Jae Harwood Hi Jae! Sorry for the late reply! This comment slipped past me. Well, definitely get a 4/4 (assuming you're a full grown adult). Where are you located? I might know someone in the area. When buying your instrument, make sure that the strings are not too far above the fingerboard. This problem is caused by the bridge being to tall. It can cause injury. Test out the pegs as well. Make sure they don't severely slip or stick. You can always take it to an instrument shop to get it set up correctly. ALWAYS play it first before buying. Don't just order one over the internet. There can be a lot of issues. I hope this helps!

So my 10 year son is going into 5th grade. In 4th he played the viola but decided he to play cello. So naturally he need to learn basic lessons before entering a new class. So my question is... how do I know if he’s sized properly? I feel like he’s struggling with the bow.
I play flute, and I've been wanting to play the cello for some time. I just bought a cello today for $20 from a friend. It's a bit smaller than yours, and I've been having some trouble tuning it. I have a tuner, but every time I had one string tuned, and went to another string, then went back to the first, the first string would be slightly flat again. How would you fix that?
Well, it's probably just the instrument itself, but perhaps putty will help.
Thank you for replying. What's putty, and where can I get some? The boy who sold me the cello also said something about rosalind (sp?) that you put on the bow to make the sound.
Also, the D string peg, when I tune it (sometimes, not so much now) would tighten the string, then go back to its original position, making the string way flat again. I had to literally push the peg into the peg box to make sure it stayed, and I'm not sure if that's good for the cello.

Hello Sarah, thx for your videos! I'm a cello beginner. One thing that really frustrated me is that whenever I play A string, I always feel my arm is too short and my wrist gets extra tight. Do u have any suggestions for that?
That is one of the most common problems for beginners I've noticed. Keep your shoulder dropped, and pronate your fingers. Your wrist can bend slightly to accommodate for the angle. It's hard to say what else could be wrong without actually watching you play, but hopefully this can help. Watch yourself play in front of a mirror, and then compare it to someone else's playing. See if there are any visual differences.

What is the double bass and what is the different between double bass and cello?
The double bass is just another term for a stand up bass. The double bass is much larger than the cello! Its strings are in order: E, A, D, G. The Cello strings are: C, G, D, A. The bass has a much deeper sound and is lower down on the octave scale as well. I hope that could help!
Should the bridge be pretty much straight up and down or is it slanted in one direction or another
Pretty much straight up and down. They can become warped, so perhaps it's time for a trip to the shop. :)
what do you recommend for tuning
I would recommend practicing with a drone. I use a Dr. Beat. It’s a drone and metronome in one - pretty pricey, but worth it in my opinion.

Please make a Tutorial series. There are so many tutorial series for guitar learning. But almost none for cello learning. In some countries like ours there are hardly any ways to learn cello. Please do it for people like us.

I just started playing the cello a few days ago, and when I put my bow in the strings, it bounces a little and it sounds horrible. I have been trying really hard to stop (like pressing down and moving the bow slower), but the it keeps bouncing on the strings. I'm sorry, this is probably a stupid question, but I don't know how to fix it. Thanks in advance.
+Edie Hughes You might try putting on more rosin, and pressing more with the right hand first finger. Make sure that your hand is angled the right way. Might check out my video on the left hand. Hopefully that helps!

I am 5' 6". I have been 'adjusting' my 3/4 cello to somehow make it work for now. I purchased Essential Elements books 1-3. Luv these books! I am excited moreover, determined to learn how to play this instrument that I breezed through Book 1 and now on Book 2. I do know how important a solid foundation is and will try and S L O W things down for myself. Still getting familiar with the bass clef. (I played French Horn from 4th grade through High School.)

At 5'6" you'll definitely want to look into finding a full size cello! It changes the interval sizes, and will effect your intonation once you make the switch, so the sooner the better. :)
