Welcome to my Tutorial Series on cello technique and general music, performance, and career tips!
I’m 48, and just bought a cello , never played any instrument in my life, but I think it’s never too later 😀
Dude, way to go!
Cool Alex Carvalho, i am 44 and just bought a cello a week ago! Never too late mate - All the best from Denmark
@@dane4890 I’m 43 and bought one last week too. I’ve played guitar for 30 years so I figured some of it will translate. I was only able to make squeaky noises until I watched this video. 🤣
@@janmage78 That is awesome Jan, hahaha! I am a small time composer/producer since 2012. I used to work with graphic arts, but i always wanted to learn how to make music, so i did jump right into it and i hope i can learn to play the cello also :) I guess it will take time and a lot of practice.
@@janmage78 I did subscribe to your channel, maybe we should talk music sometime and maybe make a little project of a kind... All the best from Denmark
Thanks so much for taking the time to help us who are new to the cello, everything is very well described.
Always wanted to learn how to play the cello, ever since I watched a the piano guys vid on RUclips, with this video, I might just buy one and start, thanks for this.
yay. that was great.
Both teachers I had so far were always talking about a "big" sound, but they were unable to explain what that means. And this is one of my biggest problems. I can only play, if I know what I am supposed to play. My teacher has given up and simply shows me how it should sound instead of naming it "big" or so. I watch and listen and work out what she does so I can immitate. Much easier that way.
This was a huge huge help for a complete adult beginner. Thank you! Any tips for building hand strength / how to stop your hand from tensing up would be great in videos.
Great job! I got my cello today and tuned into your channel. Great stuff! You’re really impressive
64 years old, been thinking of taking up the cello for a while, don’t know if I’m too old. Looks fun though.
Go for it!! I start my first lesson tomorrow!
Thank you for such a clear explanation!
amazing!! thank you Tina :*
I am 75 years old and played guitar still now since a kid. Classical, Flamenco, soft jazz, & 70s rock music on acoustic and electric guitars. I always loved the cello but was afraid to start. My cello idol was Paul Tortelier playing the Bach suites. Now I'm not afraid and want to jump right in with cello. The thing that concerns me is the lack of frets, how can we learn exactly where the noes are? I mean just i bit off the point and we sound terrible, either a bit sharp or a bit flat, how do we get it exact on point?
I played the cello when I was 5 but stopped when I was 10 to take up the flute instead.
I’m 16 now.
Since then, I’m now grade 5 distinction in flute, grade 7 distinction in singing, and grade 2 merit in piano.
I’m now working towards grade 4 piano, but I really want to play the cello again.
I don’t have my old one anymore but I really want to!
Maybe I’ll update this comment in a few years and tell you where I’m at. :)
I can't seem to process the tenor and treble clef as fast as base clef. Did you use tape for thumb positions also? I guess this is a question of mastering intonation and the fingerboard. Any tips for making it a little easier.. other than practising 8 hours a day? Thanks for the tutorials!
Time to tell dad i need a cello lol
Show
I want to play soooo bad😭😭😭
Over 45 years old here and yesterday asked my 102 year old friend if it was too late to learn how to play my first instrument. She said no, go for it! Since the 3rd grade I've wanted to learn cello, and this is the year! Thank you for your videos, I look forward to watching the series. Any tips for the middle aged newbie??
have fun !
Jody Bogues I’m currently in 8th grade and I started playing cello last year around October !! I enjoy playing cello a lot and it’s easier to play compared to other string instruments like violin n viola. Just practice everyday and have a good + decent teacher and you’ll be fine :))
Use the tape to mark the left hand placings. Buy a rock stop to hold the cello .
Fantastic! I’ve wanted to play for years, also. I’m just over 50 and had my second lesson this week. I love it so much, I find myself racing home to practice. Any tips for our age group much appreciated!
If you just want to play it for fun, that's one thing, but if you are quite serious about it I would recommend diversifying a little bit. I went back to college later in life, about the same age as you, and started to get back into music. I originally started taking cello lessons in grade school, but due to lack of funds had to stop. When I was back in college I started with guitar, then did a few semesters of voice, and then overlapped that with introduction to theory and cello. I am also learning keyboard now. They all play off of and support each other and I believe I have been able to improve at a faster rate with each.
Also, at our age I would recommend a diverse physical fitness regimen. Nothing too crazy, but at least something stretchy like yoga, and something to help with building a solid core like Pilates. A strong core will help your playing and help prevent other parts of your body from getting sore during playing. You don't have to be a weightlifter though. My body is a little beat up (Marine Corps), so diet and supplementation helps with joint issues.
Who else wants to have a cello and watching this?
Just ordered one for myself...
I want but can’t afford it yet because ... priorities
Yeah :/ true
Im actually thinking about buying one. Is it hard to learn?
Me
Well that's it. I'm ordering a cello now.
please can you get one for me, please
Hi
I'm orderinga a Tina right away, immediately, iif not before :)
@@QuoVadistis wtf do u have $7000 lying around? And your first instrument?
@@タコ-b9m Haha, you can't get a Tina for any price. They cannot make them anymore.
i'm 20, coming out of a looong and deep depression and ready to take my life back
i instantly fell in love into the cello during my time in the clinic
the cello is such a powerful yet elegant instrument that really mirrors my personality i guess
Im happy for you. I know how it feels to have depression
I'm also 20, i hope you are doing better, and making progress with the cello. Thank you for sharing. I can relate. Music heals. I wish you lots of love❤️
I'm a cellist and this video made me realise how bad my posture is lmao
Same here ahah 🤣
I play with a broken hip on one side and a prosthetic hip on the other side. Posture is a write off for me
Same here lol
I started playing cello 17 years ago, i stop when i had my children, picking it back up, crazy how much i remember, it never leaves you
Same!
16 years for me.
I stopped playing cello 4 years ago as I also play double bass and found they clashed a bit, especially when it came to working out which instrument I have to play in which orchestra. I decided to pick it up again since I have nothing better to do in lockdown and wow! It’s amazing how you never truly forget how to play an instrument, it’s just reading cello music I need to work on since I get confused a lot with my bass music and cello music 😂😂
Same, I only played for 3 years and stopped but want to get back into it. It's been 2 years and it's amazing how it clicks into you.
Yup! I played the Violin for 10 years and also stopped after I had my 1st born... 5 years later I'm back at it, a little rusty but I still remember songs from 10 years ago!
I’ve played violin since 6th grade and I’ve always wanted to play cello. I’m still really young, and not in college. But I feel like music is my gift and I’m on a quest to learn to play a lot of instruments. This video really helped me thank you :)
Same!
I played the violin until late teens and now at 26 went and bought a cello on impulse. No regrets
You don’t even understand how incredibly helpful this lesson was! I love your teaching… introducing yourself and getting to know you in the beginning of the video made me feel like I was there with you. Thank you. 🙏
Don't own or Play The Cello but still love this video
Agreed
@@LouisYan12 on my own personal world God of peace in Christ pastor please
Thank you very much, Tina. I'm a beginner (at age 35) and this already helped me tons. Looking forward to more!
I'm 72 and have had two lessons. It's certainly awkward right now. I appreciated watching you give great tips for proper positioning and relaxing. Relaxing is my current challenge, but it will come!!
Learning to play cello requires a good regular teacher.
The older you are the more so.
I'm 63 and recently thought of playing the cello after retiring for personal pleasure. I like your tutorials.
63?well not too late for you man (i hope)
I don't have a cello but I've always wanted to have one. I'm 14 and I think that it's not too late to learn and one of the main reasons I haven't bought one yet is because of the price. This lesson made me want to buy one !! Amazing work!!!
I don't own a cello... I don't know anyone who owns a cello... and yet i watched all 20 minutes of this
I don't even care about learning the cello, but i can't stop watching the video. Your gentle assertive voice & personallity is so mesmerizing. P.S i wish i could play
I am an absolute beginner and have been trying for years to find a teacher who is capable of explaining the basics in a precise succinct- way you are the first I have found! Thank you for putting out these videos! I had almost given up on learning how to play the cello!!
Consider my interest piqued. Cello is probably my favorite of the bowed strings, and this has gotten me interested in learning.
it´s by far the most versatile of the bowed instruments... love those things... but i´ll stick to guitar i guess :)
non the less, i´m always curious about other instruments and this series will be followed closely ;)
The way your whole family plays the cello🥺thats sooo cute
I am 48 and have bought my first cello. I have had learning to play the cello on my bucket list for the longest time and now it's becoming a reality. I will be practising with you, Tina Guo, everyday xxx Thank you for doing these videos xxx
Congrats!! I’m 45 and will be starting soon too!
This was so helpful! Been playing various instruments for 21 years and finally ready to learn my favorite one. You are a great teacher and a phenomenal player. I’ll keep checking back for more instruction as I learn 🎼
I’m 42! I’ve just been to my sixth Hans Zimmer concert and hearing Tina play ‘A Way of Life’ from The Last Samurai has inspired me to finally follow my dream of learning to play the cello! Never too old! We only have one life! I played the violin until my late teens so hope that will help!
I was in my school's orchestra program and spent three years learning the cello. Turns out my teacher sucked and I learned the wrong foundation while trying to play more difficult songs. So here I am, a person with several years of experience playing the instrument, trying to relearn the basics.
So glad I found your videos! I will most certainly be watching your series to (finally) help me learn how to play. I am 50. I bought a cello 2 years ago, but have been doubting my ability to learn it. That ends today. Thank you!
I’m 63 and brand new at this. Thank you for these training videos! It’s never too late!!!
An easy way to remember downbow and upbow... is your elbow moves down and up with each. your elbow moves down for downbow and up for upbow.
So I bought a cello for absolutely no reason ;)
Hilarious!!! I am thinking about doing the same 😂😂😂😂
Same. It’s fun to make noise with it and just look at it.
This is the best posture vid anywhere. Been learning cello for 14 mnths and my overall health has improved hugely...plenty aches and pains but my posture, the way I stand...its made a huge difference... feel 10 yrs younger.
I played but had no choice but to give it up. No more money. I will keep listening to your beautiful cello playing though.
Aw I'm sorry! Hugs and hope you can reunite with Cello one day!
@@tinaguo You are a very kind person for saying that, I appreciate your compassion. Sorry for the late reply , I just had surgery on my foot. At least I can still sing. I have recorded over 800 songs on the Smule karaoke app. God bless you and I will listen to your cello playing. 🎶
I'm 58 and have always wanted to play the cello. I think I will begin. Thanks for the great video.
I’ve been playing cello for about 8 years now, but I was worried about my technique. This video was extremely useful for spotting the flaws in my playing.
Thank you Thank you Thank you! I am looking forward to learning more from your videos. I am 56 years old and just bought my cello. I have always wanted to learn.
*me playing a cello for the 1st time*
Cello: "Why."
Me: "Hmmm. I think there is something wrong with this bow..."
Cello: 😭
I agree about learning classical music. I play in an Americana band but played symphony for many years. It helped me tremendously
Yay! Cello lessons! : D I started learning the cello almost 2 years ago, but since I also play the violin, my bow hand's pinky has become so confused between both instruments. :/ I also struggle keeping my left thumb behind my 2nd finger instead of my 1st finger like with violin. There are lots of similarities between the two instruments, but the small differences are really hard for me to change! :o I really like the cello though, and I'm excited for more cello lesson videos! : D Thumb position is really rough for me. Keeping the fingers curved instead of smushed-looking in thumb-position feels impossible.. T_T
Katy Adelson I know right! I play the violin and just started cello lessons. Some times I just feel like I want to flip the cello upside down and play it like a violin 😂
Katy Adelson very informative lesson. Need infirmation on musical interpretation.
@@Itsamecat Same here, can relate 10000000%
God this makes me want to pick up the Cello, but I have been trying to learn to play the guitar for ages. So some tips on how to increase speed on a guitar might be nice. All though I'm not sure that will help much as I have nerve damage to my left arm thanks to a drunk, but I would still like to learn those things even if it is on a cello.
Beautiful and Professional Video! I bought a cello and always wanted to learn since I heard a Yoyo Ma performance years ago. This REALLY helped me understand some basics. Thank You!
Ur such an amazing teacher, im so exciting to buy a cello, from where can i buy one not expensive for beginner?
I’m so happy that you’re becoming more active with youtube >
Gabriel Plays cello Ayyy Gabriel
900th comment. Also, i started playing cello in 4th grade and took a break during 5th and wanted to continue when i was in 6th but they didnt have orchestra in the new school. Now im in 7th grade trying to start again.
My wife just bought me a cello for Christmas. I find your foundations video very helpful. Thanks!
Thank you! I am a beginner at the cello, your very good at explaining and I understand a lot, I'm gonna re watch episode 1 a few more times to go along with you and understand better.
I have just turned 80 and I think I would love to play the cello. I play piano reasonably well so that will be helpful. (-: Your video has been most helpful and when I purchase my instrument I'll be back to you for more . Thank you!
Thank you from lesson.
I played cello for 18 months, and then had to stop playing for three months because I developed tendinitis in my left elbow. I am just beginning again and trying to get my technique straight. Any advice? I don't want to injure myself again. (And thanks for a great video, I've taken notes and will go through your points with my instrument).
Hope you‘re back fully recovered
Picking up the cello again in the quarantine after a 5-years blank. Feeling weird for everything and your videos are very helpful!!
Hey Tina !😚
I'm 15 y o and on February 2020 i will have my first cello lesson in music school. I wanted to play the cello for 1 year. I am upsest with the classical music ! Do you think it's too late to learn the cello with 15 years? Every classical musician I've heard of started in young age like 6 or 7... and my biggest dream is to make music to my profession. Playing in an Orchestra, giving concerts, studying music at College!
It would be nice if someone could answer my question. It means a lot to me.
Greetings from Germany.😍
(Sorry for my bad English)
Thanks for making this video. My daughter wants to learn; we have a cello but can’t afford lessons so you are making it possible for her to make a start! ❤
Yay! I learned a lot! Now I need to convince my parents to buy me the cello heheheheh sighs**
I've been playing the violin for 7 years and I just starting teaching myself the cello and your videos have been super helpful! The hardest part for me is learning the new fingerings
Thanks. I learned a lot! 34 learning for first time. 🙂
I just started playing cello yesterday eeyyyyy this is gonna help me thank you
Why am I watching this. I don’t even own a cello
Planning on buying a cello super soon. Recently started playing Bass Guitar after playing only Guitar for years, really sparked an ambition to learn a ton of new instruments. Can already tell the Fundamentals of Bass and Cello and completely different, pretty exciting stuff.
I play the guitar and piano but now I am saving up for a cello, they are hard to find here in South Africa but I saw some good ones online! I CANNOT wait for the day I finally get one! but for now I am watching all your videos for inspo! You are exceptional !!
Thank you Tina. The lesson was very easy to follow n I'm so interested to learn. Thanks again
I don't even have a cello but this was REALLY useful. THANK YOU , Tina.
Ever thought about doing a video showing us what cellists might like doing when they play music? I don't play the cello but many of us would want to compose something for this beautiful instrument. And if we know how cellists think, we could do a better job composing for them and knowing their limits.
This is describing the absolute basics and its exactly what I needed. I cant find an instructor yet, but I really needed this to get started!! Definitely moving forward and watching all your videos!!
Can you provide the amazon link for that bench?
I saw you when I found a live video of you jamming with a guitar shredder. I can’t remember who it was but that doesn’t matter because I was totally blown away by your passionate playing and skill. From the first view of you I’ve been a fan. I love guitars. Playing, talking about it and the gear. I also love learning about other instruments and people that make 🎵 music. Your music, passion, and attitude are an inspiration to anyone.
This is great please continue to develop more content like this. Oh by way I watch your Saturday vids too. 👍👍👀
Would you please suggest where and what cello should I buy to start learning? I have no clue. I'm in my 30 and this is my favorite instrument and I don't know how to play any instrument.
Personally I recommend getting a practice cello from your local instrument store and assuming your the standard height for an adult you would need a full.
Hope this helped!
I had my first cello lesson yesterday. I wish never give up.
how's ur progress?
I’m 62, but it’s never too late, doing cello and sitar!!😊🎻😊🎻🎶🎵🎶🎵
Amazing tutorial... so lucky we are to learn from the expert. Hope to see more of these tutorials
Thank you so much Tina you're a great teacher I'm a beginner I'm a older person and I love the cello I was very confused about the cello by the way you teach explaining is now I can understand better thank you so much for your help you are a great teacher I learned a great deal thank you God bless
hmmmmm... I can't get the bow to make any sound at all...
Could you go through the Cello Suzuki book/songs? Those would he grey lessons!
Madelyn O'Neill that’s a great idea!
I am 11, I am watching this video because I am practicing orchestra class and I wanna try this at home, and I am gonna do several symphony concerts for the rest of the elementary school with all the other 6th graders! Thanks for helping me learn at home.
I just got my first cello at 27 😁Thank you so much for teaching us! You give such a warm and soft energy and it helps with learning alot ☺️ You are my biggest inspiration tbh. 💕 Such a warm but strong woman!
I am 50 and considering the cello, or maybe a bass guitar. Not sure which would be easier starting off.
The two are very similar so you should consider the question, “Do I want a bow or no?”. Either way both are amazing instruments!
That was awesome. I was thinking about buying a beginner Cello. I think I'm sold, thanks!
Aw thanks Freddy!
Hi Tina. I got my cello a year ago. I'm actually a pianist. "studied piano performance at university", and love trying out different instruments.
I started playing the violin a few years ago, but I just couldn't get the shoulder rest-thing working for me.
Dunnoh...
But then I got a cello, and was researching cello lessons on the internet and on RUclips.
I just listened to your video.
I am completely blind, and could follow your video quite clearly.
Would appreciate if you keep on describing what you are presenting on the video in words as well, so I could follow.
For instance at what angle the cello has to rest on you, how exactly to grip the bow, etc.
Thank you.
Do you have a Facebook page or a website too?
God bless.
This was amazing! I've been a bass player for half of my life, and my first ever Cello, a NS Design WAV5c, is coming to me on Wednesday or Thursday. Your tips on the basics are absolute gold! :) Thank you!!!
I'm not even musical, and this was a great video for beginners. Question, does it matter if you are left or right handed? If you are left handed would you just switch the cello to the other side?
Aw thanks! It doesn't matter, because both hands are being used! Finger with your left and Bow with your right :) x
Tina Guo I just nead to say I LOVE this video Even I have played cello like 5 years byw love you and how many years you have played cello and You Are relly good And Can You still do some kindaf video game music. Btw I am relly happy if you read all of this
I met a guy one year and a half ago who played with a specially built only for him cello, a mirrored one, because he is left handed. Either way, he was a special case, of course it shouldn't matter. Btw he plays exceptionally!
I leftie 'violinist' - and casual cellist. When I first started, my teacher said that lefties tend to have a slight advantage due to the left side being used for notes - aka, the finer details. I found after a couple of weeks, it was very natural to play with the left!
Thank you Tina for this video. My daughter just started learning cello at school. Do you teach cello to young kids? If you do, how should I contact you for more information? Thanks!!
👍Thank you for this great upload.😊
That cello is so beautiful. What kind is it?
AMAZING AND BEAUTIFUL TINA. HAVE A LOVELY DAY...!!!
Anyone watching this in 2020 quarantine?
Congratulations TINA ❤
“We are not lil monsters”.... talk for yourself I am totally a lady Gaga fan 😂
Thank you for this video... my 2020 resolution find a way to de stress, learning Cello sounds like a fun way to do so..... random question, do you think if you knew how to play the violin 25 years ago, Cello won’t be too hard to learn? I’m asking for a friend 😂
Besides being beautiful, you are extremely talented!
Tina, I love your cello tutorials. Can you do tutorials for reading music. I played a little piano when I was younger but always struggled reading the bass clef notes. Any suggestions for making that easier?
I‘m obviously not Tina but I use Apps like notes trainer and write myself the scores down with musescore ... this might help 😁👍
Thank you very much!!! A great lesson.
Suggestion: Use that mirror behind you to show a different angle. This will help show the viewer and help with the time-consuming editing later. In lessons, it's alright to show the camera in the mirror.
I'm 60 years old I just bought a cello . I remember playing the violin in 4th grade but I haven't played since . It's never to late to learn. ❤
God bless you...
