The cello has been one of my favorite instruments since I was a girl. Now, at 26, I have my very first cello lesson next week. I'm an adult learner and super nervous, I can't even read music, but I will definitely be watching more of your videos to help me practice at home!
Hey I'm the same at the age of 10, I started my cello we couldn't afford to keep up by the age of 12 I had to give it up. I totally forgot everything I learnt .. back to basics, I'm now just turned 50 on 13th Nov and my husband gifted me a cello.. so I'm so excited and reuniting with it. Don't be nervous enjoy the flow and sounds you will be amazing .. love Harvie
Wow you are so awesome, thank you so much! I am relearning the cello after 30 years of not playing! I played for 8 years in my youth, but literally haven’t touched one in 30 years and bought one 3 days ago as I’ve always wanted to play again and I’ve been watching lots of videos and practicing and yours are the first that Make it accessible to me, the other so called “beginner scales” are not beginner, they go too fast, don’t really explain what they are doing and it’s confusing! Your explanations are clear and concise and your pace is perfect, thank you so much! Following and look forward to learning from and supporting you! Thank you so much!!! 💜💜💜💜
Here is my new cello tutorial video :) This video is about how to play C, G, and D Major scales on the cello! ruclips.net/video/5aSgA6P9UYo/видео.html
Jim Smith Playing the cello is mostly different than playing the violin. The technique is completely different and the cello's notes are in a lower octave. There are some similarities of course but learning to play the cello is a completely different experience that learning to play the violin.
Jim Smith Well thank you :) It definitely requires a lot more practice time than other instruments such as the guitar, but I think you should go for it! I will continue to release tutorial videos to help you out!
Sarah Joy I look forward to more of seeing how the cello works. As I am busy working on some film projects I wouldn't try playing one anytime soon however I would be interested in using the cello in some way for my current story I'm developing. Thanks!
You are so adorable. You really remind me of one of my daughters. Beside the point! What I really wanted you to know is that I began to play cello for the first time in COVID lockdown at the age of 50. I had to stop for a while because I got injured in both arms. But I am now at a place I CAN PLAY AGAIN, and I'm so excited to find your super helpful videos. I noticed you hadn't posted for a few years, so I went to find you elsewhere and discovered you on Spotify. Such beautiful music, Sarah! (I really wish you and my daughter could meet!) You are so talented and very inspiring. THANK YOU for sharing your gifts! -Holly
Hi Sarah! I just saw some of your videos and I could easily perceive that you're a very talented musician, so congratulations and thank you for those wonderful songs and for that helpful lessons. Brazil is supporting you too, so keep this great work up!!!
Working on the C Major scale. Trying to get it more fluent. Especially finger 3 is awkward, as it tends to lean over for support towards finger 2. But daily practice does work, so it's already going better than when I first started a month ago. Thanks for the videos. They help a lot, and they are quite encouraging as well.
+Sarah Joy Your videos are already a lot of help and in the 5 weeks since I got my cello (after years of pondering if I should do it) I already made a lot of progress. I very much appreciated the left hand basics you did and that video was an important step forward for me.
Sarah Joy. You are incredible. You're such a good teacher! It is simple and clear! Please be encouraged and keep going! Thank you! This is so helpful to me!
Hello Sarah, thank you for clear and cheerful teaching. After a year of studying Guitar and learning to read the treble clef, I took up my cello this morning. I was pleased to discover that I could slowly read and play treble clef. And, you look lovely in this video. :-) Alan
My orchestra class has this little thing we always do for scales. It’s called Mississippi hotdog. That’s because you can say Mississippi hotdog along with it. It goes ‘du dun dun dun dun, dun’ but kn a string. That totally made sense 👌🏼
While I have big hands, my fingers in my left hand are NOT very nimbble right now since I just started about a week ago, but I'll get there eventually. I'm probably going to watch this a few hundred times, so "YAY" for your views and watch time, and for me getting better.😉❤️
This helped! Thanks! I have a playing test coming up with all 3 of these scales and some pieces so I, of course, wanted to do good! (I already practised but I wanted to make sure I did it right and such. :D)
i want a cello. i've played guitar most of my life, and know all my music theory, and even taught guitar and piano for a while, so i got my head start. -but how do you know where the notes are?? you just gotta pick them out by ear and learn their positions?? or is there a specific distance between the notes??
MTRX 2010 there is a certain distance between each note on the cello. you just need to know where they start at least. past that it is applying that distance over and over
@@ItsVenomOntheBeat if it's like violin you can put taped frets but the fingering is precise so the tape goes where your finger must press and not up against as in guitar. Vibrato is different too it's a rolling of the finger not a push and pull as in guitar playing. So eventually after many scales you begin to realize you don't need the tape so you pull them off maybe one at a time..maybe all if you want to see if you can play without any. I play guitar but now violin.. cello is the same tuning as a bass guitar.. I think my hands are too small for cello. I envy cello players. It's beautiful.
Katherine Jones I agree and appreciate what you have to say, except I would like to respectfully state that the cello is tuned to 5ths and a bass to 4ths
I'm just starting to learn. Would you please recommend a beginner's book that shows where the notes are, not just on the cello, but what they look like, or where they are on the bass staff. I'm very visual. I am taking lessons to learn to play both by notes and by ear.
I'm about to begin yet, totally in love with the cello, so concerned about buying the best one for the price I can afford. Really enjoying your videos! :)

Hello, Its normal to always think about the best however, some cello that has a decent sound and can hold the tuning will get you started . Move slowly in the beginning and don't get discouraged. All good .The best of luck.
Awesome video Sarah, thank you. Would it be possible to have sheet music to play along to get used to reading music? Then If you would play each of the scales to speed at the end of the scale I think would be helpful for me. You're great thank you!

+Maddie Gugger No problem Maddie! I am glad that I could help. Let me know if you ever have any other cello questions that you would like to me to cover in my videos.
When would you recommend using a common (universal) finger pattern for scales or general playing? I've noticed many people tend to use universal scale patterns when playing, but I find it difficult to find videos or texts with good instruction on how to get to that point. (i.e. C major scale differing from the rest due to it's use of open string and how to go about learning that particular scale.) What advice do you have for Cellists taking on this new pattern?
If you are a beginner, I would recommend using the scale patterns that are most common. There are different options, but you won't want to confuse yourself or your fingers. You can always learn different patterns later. The finger patterns shown in this video are the most common, and I also have another video covering three (or four, I can't remember) more scales.
Sarah Joy Ok. That's been my approach. I guess a more specific example would be. I am currently learning Silent Night and Kept having trouble with switching strings from the A string to the D string when playing C Bb to Ab G on the 18th and 19th measures, as a kind of alt. way to play that part. I found it easier to shift my way down from fourth position in the C scale for that part instead of jumping from Bb on the A string to Ab on the D string. But was wondering if I should have been playing in the universal fingering pattern to begin with just for that song. If that's not clear as mud....sorry.
Hi Sara! I realize I am commenting on a 5 year old video so I have doubts that it will even reach you. My question is this. I injured my left hand pinkie during a work related injury as I did not heal correctly therefore i can not place my fingers properly in the positions. Is there such a thing as alternate finger positions or shall I give up on the cello completely? The latter would be devastating because the cello has been a long time passion of mine and I recently built up the courage to pick it up. Thank you for all your content. You have yet another subscription. Cheers!

I'm a musician from south India , I play electric bass and fretless bass. There is no good tutor here to learn cello. I'm planning to buy one 4/4 cello and learn online with tutorials ... You think it will be little easy for bassist to learn the fretboard? Bowing is anyway a new concept I have to learn.
When playing any note on the third finger are all three fingers on the string? Or just the third finger? I'm getting a cello soon and want to know as much as I can until I get my cello. Thanks!!
You have to match the bow to your specific instrument. I would recommend calling an instrument shop, telling them what kind of cello you have, then asking what bow they would recommend.
Funnish Slimes_ The famous cellist, Casals (Google him) then in his 80s, was once asked "sir you are the greatest cellist of the century, why are you still practicing?" He answered" I think I'm getting better...?!"
I don't know if it is my cello or my lack of musical guidance, but I run these scales every day and I always seem to loose sound/vibration of the string by the time I'm playing with the 2nd/3rd finger on the string. Maybe my cello isn't in tune? Idk, but I would just love some input!
+The Blonde Scientist If I understand the question correctly, mostly likely you are not putting down enough pressure with your left hand. Try pushing a little harder, but DON'T let your fingers collapse. It takes time to build those finger muscles, but don't get frustrated :) Also, let me know if this doesn't help. There might be something else that is wrong.
so, what kind of tape is it, again, that you use to mark where the notes go? I can't find the video again. So, to mark them, do I go by the notes that sound the same on the piano? That seems like it would be the easiest. Since I learn mostly by ear, but can read basic notes on the piano, that's probably the way I will learn it. I'm not going to be learning so I can play difficult stuff, but want to play hymns and worship songs for my own enjoyment, like I do the guitar and piano. No one else would want to listen to my music, except me anyway! Lol
Oh! Thank you so much! I've been watching a lot of your videos, but couldn't remember where I saw you putting those little steps of tape on the fingerboard.
i always had just assumed all string instruments standard tuning was gdae like a bass guitar lol.. are the note intervals the same as a fretted instrument? taking into consideration of coarse, the neck scale length, I was hoping to just be able to play the same scale " box shapes " I use when improvising on guitar 👽🤘👾
Thank you so much for playing each of the scales and their individual notes, as well as going over the sharps and flats! I needed them because I am trying to tune by cello correctly, and playing along with the scales of a tuned cello really helps me! (●´ω`●)❤️❤️
+Ciara White I'm glad they can help! It is possible, but there are so many details! At some point, you will probably want to find a teacher. No matter how talented or smart we are, all of us need to be guided by someone more experienced.
I wanted to ask a cellist this for a long time since your one person playing if you take request can you show how to play the cello solo for poet and peasant overture
+Susana Gonzalez what you are playing is in fact F# and C#. If this is not the case, then your fingers are very flat and need to be moved closer to the bridge. F and C should be played with second finger.
Susana Gonzalez I'm sorry, you are mistaken. D3 is called F sharp and A3 is called C sharp. The F she is using is F natural, and a little more than 8 notes below the one you mention, same for C. When you get a little bit more experienced you will understand octaves, sharps, naturals and flats.

+Sarah Joy OK thanks

hi, i dont have a music teacher for my chello, i am trying to teach myslef is this even posible? i watch ur videos amd there heling alot! ☺
+Ciara White I'm glad they can help! It is possible, but there are so many details! At some point, you will probably want to find a teacher. No matter how talented or smart we are, all of us need to be guided by someone more experienced.
+Sarah Joy
Thanks so much! ☺
Of course :)
Thankyou.
I am unsure whether i want to learn cello or violin first.
+Edward Martinez perhaps you should try both before buying either instrument, and see which one feels better!
I wanted to ask a cellist this for a long time since your one person playing if you take request can you show how to play the cello solo for poet and peasant overture
imslp.org/wiki/Special:ImagefromIndex/38759 Take a look at this, and tell me if I understand your request.
Yes that's correct I can't read the music itself (in cello version) but yes if you could play it I'd be happy
+Sarah Joy if you want to put it on your channel cool if not that's ok to
i'm lovly educited
the descending scale at the end sounded really strong
Nice!
Thanks!
i play the cello and "F" is played by 3 fingers on the D string and "C" is played by 3 dingers on the A string
You are pretty!
Is it supposed to sound creaky? 😬 on D major scale
+music just Any stringed instrument up close is going to sound a little creaky. :)
thanks
+SARA PANDA x333 Of course!
What brand of cello case do you have?
I can't remember actually...
how do you play flats?
That would be a good tutorial video! Tough to explain in one comment. Let me save that for another week's lesson :)

I'm not confident enough on violin to make violin tutorials, but I'm sure there are a lot of really great videos out there!
👏🏿
Looking ssso beautiful
ummmm... when i look down at my cello from left to right its A , D , G , then C
