I wonder if black owned hair companies ever consider partnering with each other in order to achieve their desired growth. Is partnering with a white owned company the only path to growth there is? It seems like these black owned companies only view each other as competition rather than allies. If so, this is odd to me, because they all say they have the same goal... to create high quality hair products for the black community.

      Hello Diva,
I think you make a very valid point. I would love to be on a hair care board lol.
Also I think you bring up a very important issue in our community, we need to stop seeing each other as competition and build each other up.

Another point is there was a LOT of WW who used the Mielle oil and gave bad reviews and reaction videos saying it made their hair too flat, stringy and lifeless. Ummm yeah that's because it was not designed for their hair. This is why BW now believe that the product will change because of those bad reviews. P & G will definitely cater to them and address their concerns...we all know that. 🤷🏿‍♀️

Those videos started popping up on RUclips as well. I saw the reviews and even went on Amazon and the complaints were too heavy, Hair fall, and does not work.
Ahhhhh I see your point about the Product ch aging especially if the brand is trying to get into new markets.
For now the CEO Starr the products will not change, I hope as time continues the products will still be beneficial to curly hair!

I also don’t like Mielle products. They dry my hair out. The husband was notorious for insulting Black Women who have honest reviews saying their products weren’t that good during the natural hair craze on RUclips. Shea Moisture products were also just OK and that CEO is very problematic and was disrespectful. Carol’s Daughter was the first and last time I let myself be “surprised” by an acquisition. Black Women need to get real and stop being brand loyal. And stop slithering their hair in so many products to try to achieve a different hair texture. We won’t have Black ownership as long as Black people hate being Black (being conquered). I will stick with a mix of brands and using LESS products.

Hello FLD, I completely agree with you.
I found out about the husband harassing people while I was researching for this video.
I don't use everything from one collection either, I pick and choose what works for me.
I also keep my hair regime very simple, I don't need the latest products nor do I follow the latest fad.

I appreciate your take on this. From the very first time I heard the previous owner of Mielle said they had to be bought to go global, I thought what a limiting belief.
I find it very suspicious how there seems to be enthusiasm to buy blackowned companies and not other ethnic group.

    1. You are drop dead gorgeous! 2. I don't blame Mielle for selling. It is VERY hard for a smaller company to exist if a big conglomerate wants to "aquire" you. 3. I think Blk women on Tik Tok was 💯 percent correct in their feelings and their "rampage" reaction to the lady viral video. As pointed out, WW have PLENTY of products and oils on the shelf to choose from. If they're such allies for "all women" like they love to say, then they should leave products for Black women alone. Just my two cents!!!

I disagree, respectfully. Yes, these products are marketed to us, just like there are products that are marketed to other groups, but we are all free to purchase whatever products we deem beneficial to us. We don’t own Mielle and don’t get to stake claim and gatekeep a brand simply because it’s marketed to us. We have no right to demand that white women refrain from purchasing a product. If someone told us we couldn’t purchase a product because it wasn’t “made for us”, but for white women, I imagine there would be a huge backlash within the black community and rightfully so. These brands exist to make money and the only color that matters to them is GREEN. Just my two cents.

@LadyViola No one is gatekeeper Mielle!! I clearly stated that I don't blame them for selling. My point is if one group has over 100 products that work and was designed for THEIR hair and the other group has about 20 products that was made for THEIR hair type then why on Earth would the two groups co-mingle hair products...makes no sense at all. The WW were hollering about it made their hair oily and flat, well stop buying products that was not made for your hair! 🤷🏿‍♀️

I’ve never used this brand but I want to comment because I’m quite passionate about these things …
We will never get to the point of L’Oréal if we keep allowing ourselves to be bought out. L’Oréal didn’t start off as a large company, they held their grains and used partnerships and investments to build to where they are today. What these large companies are doing is called disrupting market economy. They are creating a monopoly by eliminating competition by buying them up. And the only way it’s working is because we keep allowing them up to buy us up. You’d be surprised the very black celebrities, conglomerates that you spoke of, most of their money is coming from non-black people. And these people may not agree with them spending large chunks of this money to build large black owned companies that they will have to complete against. I believe it’s a tactic to keep us where we are. They want to keep the black dollar so they’ve got to eliminate the competition by buying the companies out. I’m sorry, I know she said “the formula isn’t going to change”, but I’d argue that it already has. She’s the main ingredient , and now there’s no telling how far down the decision making ingredient list she’s been bumped down to. Black owned -> black lead-> black founded, where the history of the brand being started by a block person is noted, but now there’s no more distinguishable black influence in decision making. I always say the problem with us as a people is the urgency of immediate gratification and the non-understanding of legacy investments. We want what we want now, and if there is an opportunity to get it (no matter the cost in the long run) we get it. On the other hand, other cultures understand how to wait out and grind their teeth so that they can keep the legacy that they want. I never heard of other cultures just being bought out by their opposites. Her explanation it was always meant to be a global brand, means nothing to me because BLACK PEOPLES ARE LITERALLY ALL OVER THE WORLD, her original formula was for BLACK PEOPLES. If she wanted it to serve everyone all over the world, then the product should have reflected that from the beginning. It would have been great if she insisted on partnership and investments so that she could keep ownership. But I’m willing to bet that these companies probably would refuse. And because she wants what she wants now (that is profit) her seat at the table and the brand’s legacy has been sold. To me, it’s undercover Black Wall Street. They can’t just go around burning down business anymore, so they buy it for less than what it’s really worth, destroy it so that it no longer serves black peoples, and then build their pockets from those who are still willing to buy. Even if they don’t destroy it, I doubt she’ll be getting majority of the profit. One wrong move and I won’t be surprised if you hear news stories on how she’s been stripped of decision making roles because an action or another she did didn’t agree with the brand image. I once heard the background story of how Louis Vuitton became a brand, I don’t remember exactly from where, but what sticks out to me was that the man wanted his bags made a certain way and wouldn’t compromise for nothing, even as he was poor and even homeless I think (it’s been years since I watched it). He refused to falter from his brand, he finally got that big break and his family I believe are keeping his brand alive. Those are the same bags today that the likes of us can’t get enough of. We have a hard time with long suffering in many aspects, and for understandable reasons. But it’s why we never seem to make it past a certain point. When we are meant to dig our heels into the ground, bite down and hold fast, many of us the moment we see something shiny or more comfortable we go full speed ahead. The problem is all that glitters isn’t gold. But we’ll see where this goes 🤷🏾‍♀️

      Hello BeautiFuFu,
I think you have hit and mentioned some many issues within our community and this is Mielle acquisition is just one example.
The CEO did say that they have no plans to change the product , she might not but with the amount of capital that was put up behind this acquisition P&G will have a say so and in order to reach a broader markets products will have to change.
As I said in the video I picked the Rosemary collection because of the benefits only to find it dried my hair out, so this will not affect me personally ( or really my hair ) but it does point to a bigger problem.
thank you so much for your insight, you speak of a larger problem in our community and at some point we will have to acknowledge this.

To your question about why these companies change existing products rather than create new ones…I don’t know for sure, but my guess is that doing so would affect their profits. At the end of the day, this is a business and if they don’t make a big enough profit, they cease to exist. It costs 💰 to create new products and I’m sure it’s cheaper/easier just to modify an existing product. These larger companies are all about mass production and this often means a sacrifice in the quality of the product. It’s very difficult to mass produce a product AND produce said product with superior quality and I suspect they change the ingredients simply because it’s cheaper. The cheaper the production, the more they profit. That’s why so much of what we buy is made in China-it’s cheaper. Basically, it’s all about the money.

      Hello Lady Viola!
Thank you for this! And it does make what you are saying. I was thinking if they keep the original oil and then make a lighter version suitable for straighter hair types they would be able to serve 2 markets, but as you said creating new products takes money.
Now the mass production you are absolutely correct on that. In the comments of the CEO’s response there were several comments about P&G being notorious for changing ingredients to lesser quality. Also people were commenting on the CEO keeping her chemist close because of this.
At the end of the day like you said , it is about the money !
Thank you so much for watching !

This saddened me. Unfortunately I do not see it as a win. I don't want to bring any negativity to this page, however it is not black owned and that is what is so disappointing. She mentioned that she doesn't want to be seen as a sellout, sadly that can't be avoided. Other ethnic groups do not sell out, instead they persevere until they are able to compete in the larger markets against global brands such as P&G. Also companies always have this exact PR narrative, that their ingredients won't change etc. however they always change without fail. I feel like she may personally have good intentions, however the global corporations who aquire them do not. I currently use Mielle and Camille Rose because they are black owned, this hurt. The entire appeal is having something made by us, for us, especially for the curly textures which we have lacked access. Thank you for this discussion.

26:58 personally I think the answer to this question is very very simple. Because of GREED. Even if our own people created a parent company from the ground up, a business mind has nothing to do with race. This is my own opinion, and it may seem pessimistic but after seeing what the BLM movement became (the allegations of the leaders of BLM keeping the charity money and buying multi million dollar homes with it) I have little faith in anyone to do right by us. It’s like they say, back in the day it was our own people selling us into slavery.

    Hello, lovely video!
I do think the reason the African-American community does not have a multi-billion dollar conglomerate is because many people have left the Christian faith, lack discipline, and God given order/ hierarchy of the household with men leading. Respect and honor toward Jesus and our families are not upheld. How could we have a massive organization when the "simple" traditional family unit is not organized? I pray our community gets back to the Holy Bible/ church for our soul's salvation and potentially prosperity in wealth, if that is what God wants for our lives. Even people groups that aren't Christian seem to have more worldly success because they have a culture that benefits them rather than tears them down, one that promotes excellence and collaboration with others for what many would call success. Just a thought. God bless you all!

Mya, this is definitely about $$$. I am happy for Mielle, however I think it is not realistic to expect there will not be a change in ingredients. We know better than that. However the idea you had regarding keeping the original products along with any reformulated ones sounds like a good one. Changes will be slow but they will come. This is quite interesting because when Courtney sold Mane Choice to Mav they had several lines. Now you don't hear or see them much. Carol's Daughter was acquired by L'Oréal , however they will no longer sell products on their website as of Feb 1. Shea Moisture is still selling on their website, however they change formula's often. It's interesting that you brought up the Tik tok video in relation to the acquisition announcement. In regards to 27:00 - FENTY has acquired Mielle Organics! 😂😂
If only, right!? Or at least something to that affect! Not saying it has to be Fenty, but you get my point! We do need a large corporation! Too bad Mielle couldn’t have become that corporation themselves.
But I completely agree with everything that you’ve said here.
It’s funny that I’m commenting on this when I actually haven’t used any of their products before. 😂
One thing I wonder (and don’t know anything about), but if the products change or the ingredients change, is that it may not be just to cater to a wider customer base, but to use cheaper/easier to source ingredients so they can increase their bottom line. I always figured that was the main reason ingredients change was so that they are cheaper to manufacture, thus increasing profit margin. 🤷🏽‍♀️ In other words, large companies are greedy. 😅(Just my thoughts)
But it could be a combination of both that and reaching a larger audience.
However, like you said, it would be simpler to just add a new version for that customer base instead of changing what is already a best seller. “If it ain’t broke…” Right?? That’s why I figure it’s about making it cheaper.
Problem is that cheaper (just like generic medication is *supposed* to work they same as the name brand) may not always work the same. And oftentimes the ones who notice are the ones who have been using the product for years. The very ones who helped build the company into what it has become.

I heard a different take on everything:
    1. P&G doesn't want competition so it bought up a competitor.
    2. The reason formulas change is because once a company with a proper R&D division takes a look at the formulation for a lot of natural hair products, they realise the product is actually junk, and is harming the hair more than helping it. SO they have to change it so it doesn't ff up ppl's hair.
    3. By selling out, these natural hair care brands avoid taking the hit to their reputation when naturals wake up and realise that slathering on too much oils etc. is not helping.
    4. Hair is hair. There have never not been products for people to choose from. Stop limiting yourself to the ethnic aisle for haircare.

    • @KlassicallyKept

      1. Completely agree
      2. People claim P&G is known for changing formulas and downgrading ingredients. In the comment section of the CEO’s response people we saying keep your chemist close and watch P&G’s decisions.
      3. I know for many people they see this as Mielle selling out, at the end of the day they are a business, they sold it and they are moving their company forward.
      4. I myself have used non “ethnic products” mainly conditioners. I think for a lot of black woken who are natural they like the fact that there are products on the market that are catering to them and their hair needs. To see that change it can be disheartening.
