When 1st re-built as a masonry structure, Windsor Castle's outer wall cannot have had so many window penetrations. In those tumultuous days, so many windows--some quite big--would have greatly lessened Windsor Castle's value as a keep.
When were so many windows added? And if possible, can sb. explain how one makes an opening in a wall without undermining the wall above any opening made? Or is the old wall taken down, then replaced by an opener one?

That's a big difference between Europe and England. England has always been democratic, with a certain consent. There's always been ways and wars to stop the monarchy building any lush palaces. This is why some British palaces aren't as big. Many British palaces built when British Monarchs had the power to were destroyed (Palace of Whitehall was the biggest palace in Europe!). Many lush Tudor palaces were destroyed. Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace, however, are utterly beautiful. If I was British I'd be so proud of those.

as your from brasil...then you would know that brazil was a former imperial empire of the portuguese crown** braganza then saxe coburg..., i am not sure about castles or palaces in brasil?
as for the british crown, it was nearly-pseudo absolutist until at least 1649, despite having a parliment,it was not elected like poland-lithuania monarchy, but more in the style of holy roman -spanish empire, not sure about limiting palaces size, before the 17th century , english and scottish royal palaces were large **...or at least in comparison to french or spanish ones, at el escorial-chateau formbai.....
later versailles was the largest imperial palace, with 10 or more copies everywhere from peterfhof, to madrid royal, caserta palace near milan....., no british palaces even come close too the size....or scale, probably too do with the high tax on windows during the 18th century**
you are right, windsor is a very large castle the largest royal**castle in england by size, one of the oldest and largest in europe, its royal and inhabited**, there are many many many castles and palaces across the UK,....
like blenheim, edinburgh, bamoral, sandrigham, kesinghton, warwick, hampton court ,cardiff castle, chatsworth, osborne house and many others, not all houses and palaces are royal or modest**..

Sandringham, Balmoral, Highgrove and Gatcombe are not royal palaces. Each is a private home of members of the royal family. Whilst King EdwardVll was Prince of Wales he bought Sandringham as a private home, it has been bequeath by each monarch to their successor, however in 1936 it pass to Edward Vlll how abdicated and George Vl then bought it from him. On the accession of George Vl his mother Queen Mary moved to St James' Palace. On her marriage Princess Elizabeth lived at Clarence House, when she became Queen she moved to Buckingham Palace whilst her mother Queen Elizabeth the Queen mother lived at Clarence House. On the death of Queen Mary St James was used for functions and for the Commonwealth

I'm wondering why Windsor Castle is worth so much less than Buckingham Palace when the former is such a larger palace? Is it to do with location?
And why is Windsor Castle called a "castle" when it's really a palace?
Also, why do billionaires live in mansions and castles or palaces? Castles and palaces are typically bigger than mansions aren't they?

    • @mscott3918

Buckingham Palace is in Central London where property prices are much higher. Windsor is a castle because that is what it was originally built as, a place of defence. Palace generally means just a very grand house. Some millionaires live in palaces. The home of the Duke of Marlborough is Blenheim Palace. The old seat of the Duke of Hamilton was Hamilton Palace and the Edinburgh residence of the Duke of Buccleuch, a member of the Scott family, is Dalkeith Palace.

In fact, when I saw Kensington Palace it reminded me of the big colonial houses in Annapolis, Maryland (where I used to live). In other words, not that very royal. Whitehall Palace in London where a lot of the tudor drama took place was the biggest and most opulent european palace at one time surpassed not even by Versailles. Sadly it burnt down. Versailles expanded later due to having a lot more land mass available.

I'm assuming they partition between the private residence side and the public walkaway. With exception to the Queen living in Buckingham, if I had as much money as they do, I would build my own private home for absolute privacy without people going to around to gawk.
