If I were to choose I would live all year round in either Highcleare Castle or Balmoral Castle and have an overnight flat in Kensington Castle. I don't have any desire to become royal but dreaming is always fun.

In those tumultuous days, so many windows--some quite big--would have greatly lessened Windsor Castle's value as a keep. When were so many windows added? And if possible, can sb. explain how one makes an opening in a wall without undermining the wall above any opening made? Or is the old wall taken down, then replaced by an opener one?

Because the British Monarch was not allowed to build super lush palaces. They were not absolute monarchies. Britian was very much rich but did not allow their monarchs to build big palaces. Windsor Castle is utterly stunning.
That's a big difference between Europe and England. England has always been democratic, with a certain consent. There's always been ways and wars to stop the monarchy building any lush palaces. This is why some British palaces aren't as big. Many British palaces built when British Monarchs had the power to were destroyed (Palace of Whitehall was the biggest palace in Europe!). Many lush Tudor palaces were destroyed. Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace, however, are utterly beautiful. If I was British I'd be so proud of those.

Actually you are technically wrong. Blenheim is owned by the crown and leased to the Malborough. Each year the Duke of Malborough pays the rent by presenting the monarch with a small standard.

I've seen St. James' Palace and Kensington Palace. From outside, they look totally underwhelming. Kensington is my favorite, followed by Anmer Hall. Buckingham Palace is the most iconic & royal looking. Highclere is the most hideous. It looks like an Italian-influenced medieval seminary & I loathe the box shape.
