    Part of the problem is the complete normalization of height-shaming in our culture. There are a seemingly endless number of hyper-viral social media posts with millions of engagements each of people just brutally shaming short men. We typically put the onus of dealing with body-shaming on the people who experience it rather than on the people who do said shaming, especially when the body-shaming in question primarily targets men. Men are not supposed to be "insecure."
    I spent much of my 20s legitimately suicidal about my height, but whenever I opened up to someone about it the response would usually be something akin to "stop being insecure, women don't find that attractive."

      @@Ryan-cb1ei true, ultimately, even if she did give some insightful criticism on this weird cultural norm, what good does it do? I can’t see the short jokes stopping anytime soon. I’m not very tall myself, and I get some flack for it, but it’s not as bad as you’d think it’d be on social media. But what I have noticed, is the subtle differences in treatment between a man of my height and taller men. This goes beyond dating, I’m talking in a workplace or just out in the world. I have work to do myself when it comes to confidence, discipline, self esteem, etc. but I’ve witnessed certain guys just be given respect and taken more seriously or considered for leadership opportunities just for being a larger male, than someone who’s shorter and may be more qualified, and I’m not talking about myself in the latter, I’ve seen it happen in work spaces between people that have no relevance to me, it’s wild to witness. It’s not all doom and gloom, but one group of men definitely get “buddy”’d more than the other.

  • @demonprinceofkhorne
    @demonprinceofkhorne 3 месяца назад +1219

    I’m 5”4
    What I’ve noticed is less because of dating but because of work. I’ve always gotten more respect from colleagues who have only ever met me via zoom/skype/teams. Regardless of rank, I am treated with more respect by people who don’t know how tall I am.
    People who can see my real height will treat me like I’m 10 years younger than I actually am, like I don’t know how to do my job, and like I can’t hold authority or even have emotions.
    I’m marrying a woman who is basically the same height as me. It’s not the dating scene that upsets me about being short, it’s that it often feels like I’m held back in my career because I’m short.

    • @MachFiveFalcon
      @MachFiveFalcon 3 месяца назад +54

      For business careers and others like it where dominance seems to be valued, I could definitely see that. I could probably get dates at my height, but I feel so unattractive that it bothers me - kind of like anorexic women. I'm glad your height hasn't made dating a problem for you!

    • @PowerofRock24
      @PowerofRock24 2 месяца назад +100

      This is sadly true. I'm 5'6 and I also look 10 years younger than I am, not a beneficial combo at work. I get talked down to by window-lickers at work like I'm a child, even if I am more competent and more intelligent than them. I've learned to treat them with no respect or consideration, and everyone else with the utmost respect. It created an interesting duality at work. Fuck 'em.

    • @Ryan-cb1ei
      @Ryan-cb1ei 2 месяца назад +90

      This is true and needs to be talked about more. Taller men statistically get taken more seriously, are more successful, and make more money. The average CEO is over 6 feet in fact. People think short guys just complain about dating and whatnot (as if they shouldn’t be upset by unworldly amount of disrespect anyway) but there’s sadly so much more to it than that. And I say this as an average height guy because apparently I have to mention it I guess.

The doctor who's at the forefront of this procedure and its biggest promoter--I think it's an Indian guy in Canada--despite being a huge cheerleader who doesn't hold much stock in psychological or other concerns, says he tells anyone with any kind of athletic ambitions not to get the procedure. Even in basketball or volleyball, where every inch is an immense advantage, not even an inch is worth the extra risk to your bodily strength and toughness. Men who do this come away with a weaker, distorted body. Most of them are fully aware of this actually; they just say it's indeed worth it to be a little bit taller. They think literally anything is. I am 5'3" and I no longer soft-play or pretend to be nonjudgmental about this decision for the sake of political correctness or libertarianism. It's ultimately "your body, your choice"--but some choices are simply unhealthy, both physiologically and psychologically.

    I'm a short man, I had cancer in my teen years and cancer/chemo stunted my growth, I fought hard, and after high school I was in remission and cancer free. I thought life would be happy, but I was wrong, as the years went on I struggled so much being a short guy, from getting rejected constantly, to being made fun of, to people not taking me seriously. Even body positive people crap on mens height. It was so painful, even more painful than the cancer to be honest. It's enough that I wish I never survived cancer, and it should have just took me out during my teens. I might have been cancer free but now society treats my height like cancer. I tried to be positive but it's just coping at this point. Now my cancer came back very aggressive, It's tearing my body, at best I only have a year to live and honestly I don't mind it anymore because the experience of being a short man is infinitely more painful than the cancer I had to deal with, now I can just finally rest and be free from the shackles of heightism.

      Honestly I don't even understand it as a tall dude. I mean, *I get it*, for various reasons wanting a taller partner. For protection and societal pressure, but heighr and muscle literally means nothing of that person doesn't have a protective mindset. I've met dudes far smaller that I think could beat my ass because they're mentally and even physically strong. A 6'4 guy may look scary but if he doesn't have the drive to protect or is a coward it's pointless. I get it's just women's preference and doesn't have to be logical but uts so weird, especially when they're so adamant about it. I like tall women, big butts, smaller titties and mixed race, light brown skin. But if I find a woman who's short, pale, with massive honkers and a flat ass that absolutely adores and is loyal to me and follows a belief system I can agree with I'm lifting her in my arms and thanking God for her everyday.

I have several short friends, none of them had issues dating, one of them even has two girlfriends (it's a poly couple), one is married with kids. And women don't do life-threatening surgeries for fun - they feel like they need to have them, that it is a requirement of sorts, too. You're looking at issues in your group and then dismiss issues in the other group.

      Good point on the sexes. But...Even if surgery is somehow needed for you to be considered for "love" by anyone, this is an especially poor choice. If your situation is that extreme, it must be because you're not just short but aesthetically unattractive. Physique and grooming improvements are dirt cheap; and facial surgeries are cheaper, safer and less risky, less extreme and disruptive and grueling and painful and time consuming, produce better results, and have every other possible advantage over this limb distorting surgery nonsense. Pick that if you must; there is literally no reason to prefer the limb surgery.

      You cannot do much about your height, but you can earn stature and status. Maybe focus on getting a good job and achieving something. No one is looking at an Olympic level swimmer and going "too short". There's a guy who hangs from a line in the Himalayas, he's an army man. He ensures pieces of rural villages have WiFi after natural calamities like earthquakes, floods, avalanches, snowstorms. No woman is looking at that guy and saying "too short". And for any woman that does, there are ten others who see him as a complete boss and are full of gratitude and will offer you a meal in their household any time they see you.
      There's a guy who made tracking software that every logistics firm in India uses. This guy is a BDM. Earns millions. No one things, "but he's too short".
      Make something of yourself such that being fair, dark skinned, short, fat, weak, funny voice doesn't factor into how amazing / valuable you are.

      Attractive people simply get extremely good treatment. Being taller would easily give you more of this default respect.

You’d see people getting this done left and right. Even now, more men are deciding that the future health complications are worth the few inches if it saves them from a lifetime of subtle or obvious disrespect in dating, professional life, and life in general. You can argue it’s not a healthy mentality, and it definitely isn’t. She constantly exaggerates to berate the men who choose to do this (i.e. she chastises the men for going through a procedure that will "never allow them to walk and be crippled", only to later admit that the men will be walking normally again in time) . She then exclaims, "all of that and you still won't be 6 feet", which just emphasizes and highlights that 6ft+ = better, and under that = no good. . Later on the video after reviewing on patient who underwent LL to get to 6'4, she salivates while explaining that "she loves the idea of a 6'4 guy hanging out with the guys", but then scolds the patient for not being happy with "who he is" and waiting for the right woman come along to accept him as is (lol, just lol) - Again reinforcing that being very tall is good and ideal. . The video has some utility without her commentary, but if she did that, she'd probably get a copyright strike. IMO, the opening sequence was good to show that this is an issue (not so much the surgery, but the society's attitude toward height and the mindset of those who choose to go through the surgery) Add to this she still didn't provide any solutions.... And she isn't funny. TL;DR - Textbook concern trolling from start to finish, no solutions and another "it just so happens....".

    I am 5'7 and I was born and raised in a country where that is slightly above average for men, taller than most women but not by much. Was always self-aware that I am a smoll boy but never felt that it was an issue, for sure a bunch of girls saw me as a little kid but I never had a situation where someone I was interested in hit me with a "hey you are great but I don't date gnomes".
    When I was around 24, I moved to Ireland for a few years and had the same vibe, smoll but had no issues developing relationships. Then I moved to Canada and oh boy I was not just a gnome but a small gnome on Canadian "standards". Not only the average height for males is a lot higher but society overall gave a lot more fucks about it.
    So I guess it is a regional thing at the end, I might sound condescending if I say that 5'7 is fine regardless of where you live.
    My advice for anyone insecure about their height is to focus on themselves and try to broaden their view, the vast majority of girls who place height as a requirement are people you should not be dating at all (even if you were a long legs boy). Just be self-aware that taller men are by default more attractive than shorter men. Still, the thing is, the moment a connection is made that preference will naturally fade (the same way that my preference is thicc goth girls and none of my previous 4 long relationships were with one).

    • @MachFiveFalcon

      I really respect your attitude. I have OCD/body dysmorphia, and the "just be self-aware that taller men are by default more attractive than shorter men" part makes me feel disgusted with my body all the time - even after therapy and meds. For people like me, it's better to just avoid relationships all together. But most short men can benefit so much from your mentality. Thank you!

    • @gabrevanasa
      @gabrevanasa 3 месяца назад +3

      @@MachFiveFalcon While I believe that statement to be true, there are two major things to consider!
      1 - That is only objectively true if you compare two individuals who are visually the exact same except for their height (which will never happen)
      2 - Even if you take it at face value that is still only one aspect out of a multitude of small/medium/big characteristics that make someone attractive for each individual
      Using myself as an example, all four past relationships I mentioned were with girls extremely different appearance-wise, including their height (one was considerably smaller than me, two were pretty much the same height and one was a bit taller). The only thing I can identify that they all had in common was that I really liked the tone of their voice, which, for whatever reason, seems to be the most important characteristic when automatically gauging someone's attractiveness for me personally.
      Another major thing to be self-aware about is how shallow social media is in general. Odds are that the same people you see on Linkedin celebrating how awesome their jobs are, on Instagram celebrating how fit and happy they are, and on dating apps being extremely picky about what they are looking for are outside of the "online world" as miserable as they can be and all of that online facade is just an "automatic" response when seeing everyone else around them doing the same.
      The key to a 180 on your body image is realizing that your height doesn't matter at all. All the scenarios you can make up in your head about "if I were taller x thing would be better/easier" are not genuine. Imagine being taller as the cherry on top of your cake. If the cake is shit the cherry won't save it, if the cake is good the cherry won't add any meaningful value to it anyway. A cake with a cherry on top might be better to look at, but it becomes irrelevant once you eat it.
      My three (not so) simple steps for your wellbeing:
      1 - Avoid social media, especially dating apps
      2 - Focus your aim on doing active in-person things to improve your health, both gym/sports for your physical health and hobbies for your mental health
      3 - Realize that people fucking sucks most of the time, your disproportional low body image comes from an extremely inflated good judgment of everyone else other than you

But if someone literally told you "hey you are great but I don't date gnomes," I do not care what other contextual details there are or how she said it, she did not indeed think you were at all great; she hated you and wanted to hurt you. You probably know this but it needs to be said because too many young guys and sad sacks earnestly experience things like that and think of it as a woman who could have liked them, and they liked her back, if not for the extreme effect of the height factor. This is deranged.

      It's like breast size. Many men THINK they want a woman with large breasts because of the culture, then they find a good woman with small chest and their preference fades into obscurity. And have you SEEN some of the men these women eventually settle with? They are usually quite unsightly. To the right woman, appearance isn't even secondary or tertiary. It just doesn't matter as much as the looksmaxing communities want you to believe. As a tall man, you have no right to be making fun of these men and their experiences with being short. People act as though confidence is some kind of magical switch that we can just turn on when we feel like it. I have a friend who's 5'3 and wants this surgery. As long as he does his research and knows what he's doing, who am I to stop him? I find it completely understandable for a man his height to want to pursue this surgery. Besides, who's more insecure? A short man that knows what he wants and is pursuing this surgery to try and change his life for the better or a short man that doesn't because he's too insecure to pursue cosmetic surgery and face the judgment that comes with it?

      The thing is, with any physical insecurity, cosmetic procedure will never stop the problem from persisting in your mind. It just changes its form, but the worry doesn't just go without mental healing. We think all our problems would be solved if we could change just one or a few things. It doesn't just work like that. And I have multiple things physically I'm not secure about. But I know changing those things isn't going to bring me the perspectives I want in life that will bring happiness. And my personal thought to people who would treat me better because I look any different: I don't do that to anyone else so I don't want you as a part of my life in any capacity anyways.

      @@nicksamuel8324 I don’t think you fully understand. And my insecurities are not at all invalid. I have to work on them both physically and mentally.
      There are cases like what you’re saying, but a large, likely majority of people suffering from body dysmorphia have mental healing that needs to be addressed. Otherwise, many of these people pursue more surgeries despite the costs, more pure obsession, which is what body dysmorphia is. This obsession does not simply stop because you lost the weight or got a hair transplant, and there is plenty of evidence attesting to that.
      Regarding height, the reality is most people truly create a bigger mental block for themselves about it than how it actually factors into real life.
      Your point is fair, but it’s extremely specific and not aimed toward those my main message is about. You can drop your attitude as well my friend, I’m not here to attack you.

    Being short, as a dude, is like if society just wallopped you in the face and made you believe it was your fault for being in pain. Better yet, you're the bad guy for asking society to leave your face out of wallopping range because you're made to think being happy about the pain is good character, and you're especially bad if you swing back. The craziest part is this exists for a lot of the male experience,not just for height.

    The issue that I also see is that it feels like more is better ALL THE TIME im 6’0 and I was fine all through Highschool and I felt great
    Then college hit and there was a guy who was 6’5 and another at 6’3 and specifically in the black community (my first HBCU mind you) I felt it come over me like A TRUCK this feeling of being something people settle to after them. The awestruck faces when they enter a room. The way people seemingly just think they’re cooler. The way people would just walk up and ask them for their number etc
    I’d never felt it until I wasn’t the tallest in the room and I can’t even begin to understand how that’d feel if you never are.
    I’m perfectly fine with preference and attraction as they are and there’s nothing that’s going to change about that.
    However I think we need to seriously have a conversation around this and actually see this as an actual insecurity that’s valid and actually respect men who are short
    Beyond “short king” and all the other fluff (I can imagine that feels highkey patronizing) but by just not constantly making reference to it and making jokes and light of it all
    No more “I could throw you on the bed” jokes or “what happens when I wear heels” jokes. The reality is fair and it exist but reminding people of that harshness litterally only makes it worse

      As a short guy, I wanna say this is probably THE most aware and empathetic comment I've read about the issue by someone not directly affected. You get it.
      The scientific description of the heavy automatic bias in behaviour we show towards taller/better looking people is called "The Halo effect". If you look up the research they've done about this, its actually horrifying how corrupted our behavior towards people we perceive as uglier is on average. Life is a completely different experience.
      As a short man, you're almost never seen as "manly", never seen as dominant and sexy in the classical sense. You have to find other avenues to be valued for, such as intellect, empathy, cadence, etc, but you have to make up for it, otherwise your aesthetic disadvantage will be very apparent all the time.
      The Halo effect also affects ugly women to an ugly degree. Ugly men too, not just the short ones. I'm a fairly short guy, but I have an very fortunate to have pronounced verbal skill, a lot of eloquence and a schooled silent but precise cadence that compensates for the lack of respect is get just for my body alone. What I did work on is my face and clothing. After changing my hairstyle, my clothing and using some subtle makeup and jewelry, IVE BEEN TREATED SO MUCH BETTER, it's like night and day. Most of the time I don't need this optimized halo, but when I go to social events, or want to win an argument/want something from someone I make myself for visually pleasing and it makes those aspects of life so much easier and more useful. I finally understood why women think it's worth it spending hours in front of a mirror.
      I want to thank you for your comment. If more people had your metacognition and humility, we'd be in a much better place.
      We need more awareness of the Halo effect. And thanks for being so open minded.

    • @nirfz
      @nirfz 6 месяцев назад +11

      The seasonal change- and temp change- pain goes away after a few years. Other damages like anything that gets misaligned or mistreated during the lengthening process like the ankles, knees and can be damaged will of course stay.
      How i know that: I had a motorcycle accident long ago where i got a titanium rod through the several pieces my shinbone was broken into. And i had that for a year. had to learn to walk again, and will not forget the pain ever. Due to a certain way of attaching the titanium rod i had to put my weight on the fracture for some time and that is the worst pain.
      But this was done to make it heal better and faster. ->Those guys with their lengthening apparati don't get that. Makes me think they not just undergo extreme pain "for not much gain" but also the healed fractures aren't as stableand strong as normally grown bone should be and would be. (and my fractures are).
      I felt seasonal or temperature changes for maybe 4-5 years. (but i mainly felt when the temperatures were going to increase, and more moisture would be comming in the air)

    Ive done this surgery its been 2 years and I feel better than ever tbh. Went from 5'6 to 5'9 and it really does give you a new perspective. I was approved to go to 6' but I didn't want to look more abnormal compared to my arm length so I kept it modest. I am treated much more differently. Men treat me more with respect and I have confidence to approach women and have gotten numbers now. Having a kid this year in fact. I even asked my gf would she date my 5'4 friend and she said no. The surgery is worth it 100% if you are willing to go thru the pain and time required.
