Excellent job! That's my line of work (framing) and I simply love it. It's good to have an extra hand (worker) available when you must handle super long pieces of lumber, etc. but I still do pretty much everything myself. I seem to move faster that way. The 1st thing I said to myself was..."I hope he put some supports outside the structure for just a tad of extra support"...and dang if you didn't do it. I mean as soon as I said it, you then said....I also put angle supports outside. What timing! Kudos to you, the crew, roofers, foundation crew, and whoever else was involved. Looks very good. Alright, you got a big thumbs-up and a smile! 👍🏼🙂 Full-watch.
Thank you very much! The framing crew was just me, besides the homeowner who kept getting in the way! LOL
@@MyDIYAdventures The home owner just wants to help.
He wanted to micromanage😐
@@MyDIYAdventures Oh, I see now. That's not good. Take it easy my friend and enjoy your Friday.
@@MyDIYAdventures he should have done it himself then
Hell yeah man!! Awesome stuff!!
Thanks!!!
Looking good. Ton of work
Thanks! Yeah, it was more work than I like to take on for the contractor, but as always...he needed someone!🙋♂️
I’m saving up money to build a garage . Wish you were near Bullhead city AZ 😭
Sorry, I’m up near the North Coast🙂
@@MyDIYAdventures how much money do you think it cost to do this exact addition? I have a garage just like this one and would like to make it about the same size as the new one you did
Total cost to the homeowner, probably $20k+ and probably 2/3 of that was labor. But I don’t know for sure, I haven’t priced a job like that for myself in quite a while.
I thought there was 20 more steps involved wow you make me want to remodel!
There’s a million steps…it just depends on how you define a step LOL
I subscribe before I finish the video great work
Thanks for subscribing!
Nice work SIr!
Thank you much!
That’s great. I’m wanting to make my garage like 6’ to 8’ deeper in the front and the same for the width on one side that would go a bit behind the home to also connect it to the back of my place. It’s almost the size of a two car garage now but just an odd layout on the property. Long driveway along the side of the house to the garage. The garage I have now is on the side of the house but also back so it’s front corner is about 5’ gap from the back corner on the house. I’ve always dreamed of connecting it to the house to have an attached garage. Your work turned out amazing great job.
Thank you! And good luck with your project!
Nice. I would have ran ceiling joist on every rafter to accommodate future ceiling finish.
The slab for the addition was only on a rat-wall. Since it wasn’t a full footer, code doesn’t allow joists on every rafter because they consider that a “storage garage” then...kind of a dumb rule if you ask me🤷♂️
Not sure your still looking at comments for this video but was that 2-ply 2x12 header for the garage door? Also, what was span for that opening. I am planning a patio build and was curious how far a 2-ply 2x12 could span. Thanks for putting out the videos.
Yeah, that was 2 2x12s with 1/2” OSB in between. It’s a 16’ door opening, so that is a sufficient header for a gable wall. If it is a load bearing wall, it needs to bump up to an LVL header, of course, check the building codes in your area👍
Have you ever extended a garage the other way? Like length wise
I just started one today, actually…but I’m not sure if I have a video of a build like that though.
Do you work out of S.E. Michigan? I want to do a similar garage addition but stretch it longer not wider.
I’m not licensed in Michigan
Looks good, like your videos. What size lumber did you use for rafters and ties?
Rafters and joists are 2x6, collar ties and king posts are 2x4...thanks for watching!
Does it actually save that much to save that little bit of old garage?
I was just the labor for a contractor on this one, but that’s what they said. Also, sometimes the local zoning office doesn’t allow a complete tear down for one reason or another.
Hey cool videos, I'm want to build a garage butted up to my house without connecting it to the house. Can I frame 2 walls, a garage door and some how brace the fourth wall without actually attaching it to the house?
I would think you could do it as long as the wall has some type of sheathing for shear bracing...it also depends on zoning and building codes where you’re at.
How much cheaper was it to add to the extension?
I’m not sure it was any cheaper than if it could have been built new.
Did you raise the height of the ceiling?
Nope, same height.
how much is the total cost?
I framed this for a contractor, I’m not sure what total cost was
I want to do something very similar to that on a detached garage. I have one car garage and I want to turn it into a two car. I already have concrete on the other side so I was going to plan to do a lean to but if I could convert into a full two car what are the pros and cons? Is this much cheaper than a tear down and a rebuild? What was a total cost?
I was just the framer for a contractor on this job, so I don’t know the total cost. But I do know that if you can do a lean-to on concrete you already have, that is definitely the easiest and cheapest way to go!
Looks harder than building one from scratch
It absolutely was!
@@MyDIYAdventures with the high prices of lumber and supplies building a 2.5 garage from scratch would be how much these days?
20 or 60k?
I’d say $40k give or take.
Great work! I take it the homeowner wasn’t a good videographer? 😂
Oh man, he was something else, I may do a whole rant video about the guy!😂
My DIY Adventures Your thumbnail is killing it too!
Ugh...I hate making thumbnails! I feel like it’s the make-or-break moment!
