Late Late Show host Craig Ferguson remembers the one guest who changed his life, and the show. Archbishop Desmond Tutu, he recalls, "freed me up a little bit."
-----
Host of TV's The Late Late Show, Craig Ferguson talks about American on Purpose: The Improbable Adventures of an Unlikely Patriot. Ferguson delivers a funny memoir about his journey from the mean streets of Glasgow to the comedic promised land of Hollywood. Along the way he stumbles through attempts to make his mark--as a punk rocker, a construction worker, and, tragically, a modern dancer. - Book Passage
Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Craig Ferguson got his start as a drummer for punk bands. He came to know Michael Boyd, the artistic director of The Tron Theatre in Glasgow. Ferguson was soon the star of his own BBC television show, 'The Ferguson Theory.'
Ferguson starred with Betty White and Marie Osmond in the short-lived ABC comedy 'Maybe This Time.' After the show ended, Craig played Drew's boss on 'The Drew Carey Show.'
Ferguson has written the feature films 'The Big Tease' and 'Saving Grace.' Ferguson wrote, directed, and starred in 'I'll Be There.' Ferguson appeared in 'Lemony Snicket's: A Series of Unfortunate Events.'
Ferguson took over as host of THE LATE LATE SHOW on January 3, 2005.
Craig is a great man. Talented and compassionate. He won a Peabody Award for the Desmond Tutu episode.

"Democrat Cult?" So...what's the other side of the coin? "Let's burn down the house just for fun!" Party?
and a horrible speaker. Spit it out! Damn! it it it, I, I, I he was, he was but ....
haters with hate
I could listen to Craig talk about anything, he's such a well spoken and intelligent man.
Extremely funny too
Agreed!!!
The type of comedy he was doing helped to show his intelligence. He was so quick in his responses to people! Help his guest to feel comfortable.
He was also very funny in the 70's/80's in his stand up years in Scotland in his persona as "Bing Hitler"
Miss this man. One of the best.
Hes alive and has a podcast. He aint dead my man
Yeah he is alive hahhaha
As a South African I can confirm that archbishop Tutu was revered in South Africa for his 'call-it-like-it-is' attitude. He was an extremely down to Earth and yet brilliant man! A Nobel prize winner who you could sit next to at Anglican church on Sunday morning (we did!)... he is loved and missed to this day.
As someone who came to his show in its last couple of years, and someone who has watched an embarrassing number of hours of RUclips compilations of Craig's shows since he went off the air, I only wish this clip was at least an hour longer. God, I love this guy and his life-giving zaniness!
instant dislike
I would recommend his memoir American On Purpose, it's pretty good
I think more people have discovered Craig’s LLS from YT than when it originally aired. It is so much more entertaining than anything on late night now!
It's one of the last nice times I had together with mom b4 she passed. Watching Craig's show.
I still watch his late late show all the time, he's such a genuinely great guy and extremely loveable
Nawal I'm thinking of going through and watching every episode in order chronologically one per night as if it was still airing.
yeah i wish we were all more like him, myself included the most, of course..
@@dinospumoni663 That’s a great idea. Thanks.
Desmond Tutu was a good friend of our family when i was growing up...my Dad used to work under him. Nothing about Desmond overtold, if anything, the stories about him are watered down. Heart of Gold, Balls of steel.
I was working security at a function years ago and Archbishop Desmond Tutu was the special guest. I really wanted to meet him and shake his hand, so I positioned myself near the exit so when he left, I could cross the passage way with my hand out and greet him. As he was leaving he saw me and before I could move, he walked straight over to me with his hand out and greeted me. He knew, he just knew. So when Craig says he is a very special man, I know exactly what he means!
It's true that only Desmond Tutu; the late night discussion shows guest in particular, changed Craig Ferguson's life. Even if Craig Ferguson; treated the use of foul language, like a funny joke. That doesn't surprise me at all.🇺🇸🌙🌉🌃🌌😴⛺🌙👍✔👍
@@georgeshelton6281 Crikey Dingo!
This guy was such a fun host. Seems to have outstanding character and a brilliant quick wit.
Love how real Craig is. Never changed the way he is. No matter who he talked too. Brilliant chat show host.
I used to work in a fancy restaurant in Oakland and I served Desmund Tutu and his wife breakfast, I was sooooooo honored, they we're so sweet and speaking in their native tongue. I've never been more star struck.
I started watching this talk, realized I never actually watched the entire interview with Desmond Tutu, so I went to watch it. Craig looked like he was sooooo nervous while the Archbishop was just all giggly and smiles. It was great (that last word to be read in your best Scottish accent lol).
I still watch his show..find my self laughing out loud..at 3 am...often
Craig is a legend. He was such a unique host. All the talk shows now are just about being goofy and fun without much substance. Craig wasn’t afraid to risk losing a few fans to put himself out there. That show he did with Stephen Fry with no audience was so brilliant.
My wife and I miss Craig F. so much. He has the unusual particular kind of wit and talent that no one can replace. I hate that he quit the show but understand completely. Stay safe folks.
I have been watching Craig's Brittany Spears monologue on RUclips every once in a while for a few years. I can relate to his perspective and I really appreciate his honesty. Craig is civil and engaging, and those few minutes of his time impacted my outlook on what I am doing, and probably Brittany's too. May God continue to richly bless you, Craig.
I just watched that interview and it was fantastic. It was so different than any of the other late night shows. That is one thing that makes Craig great, that he can do a good serious show and be hugely entertaining at the same time.
Desmond Tutu was based in Dublin as a lecturer in Trinity College Dublin for many years at the worst of the Apartheid years while he worked internationally on behalf of South Africa from Dublin and he also made valuable contributions to the discourse/evolution of Ireland as a more progressive democracy. His directness was compassionate and both qualities were much appreciated in Ireland.
You changed my life Craig, for the better. Thank you.
Craig deserved the Peabody for the Nobel winning Archbishop Desmond Tutu interview. Craig looked very nervous for a lot of it, since Tutu really did not conform to some pre-disposed idea I had about him at the time. Tutu was almost giggly, funny, and utterly down to earth, to an extent I just did not expect. Even while he was making profound points.
Rip Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who passed away a little over 6 months prior to this post.

Yeah if u dont act crazy when u are crazy then it gets worse, if u act crazy when u are not you go crazy.
Bruce Schneider its what I live by
this is such a nice video. I'm so lucky I stepped on it. Craig is a comedic genius. His improvisations skills have no match.
His comedic style is so effortless. Spontaneous, natural, and always right on point. You are right, sir. A true comedic genius.
Craig is the kind of insanity we need. And I very much miss the show.
Ditto!
He may go down in History as one of the last truly funny (the other being Conan) late night talk show hosts.
Thankfully we have podcasts as an alternative to what's on late night TV now.
Matthew Gray I agree completely! Today's late-night hosts, Fallon, Kimmel, Colbert, etc. are pathetic. I will always love Craig's show and miss it very much but at least we have Conan👍
There aren't many of us out there, so enjoy life and be happy no matter what anyone thinks.
Craig is an impressive human being
Wow. Didn't know this existed. Thanks for posting (and for linking to the entire video). Can't wait till Join or Die starts in a couple weeks.
I knew he was going to say Desmond Tutu.
This was one of the best interview, it was very short but very good. They should dedicate a show just for Desmond Tutu.
I watched that episode, and I knew then that I loved Craig Ferguson as a good man.
A good man is someone who does the right thing.
If only Ferguson could have gotten the Tonight Show.
going over to watch that interview righhht now
trha2222 I don't think he did...
Thanks for this clip, just watched the show and was an amazing interview! What an incredible human being!
I have to agree with what Desmond told Craig, because I always thought that, watching him host the show. He never failed to make me laugh and feel better about things in life. Craig is nuts, but in a very good, fun, and necessary way.
He was impressive. He came to speak @ UCSB in 1986, several years before the fall of Arparthied in Sourh Africa. He challenged everyone there to be more active politically and to take notice of the good fortune we all had by just being able to attend a University.
Craig is also an impressive human being. He is my hero.
Course ppl say I am crazy too. Love ya Craig .... you are a great funny yet sincere man!!!
I agree. That was Craig's best interview. Everyone can learn from Tutu's example.
Best episode of Craig's show ever...Wish Craig would do more interviews like that !
When I saw tutu for the first time I thought he was a joke. I was totally wrong and quite quickly came to understand this guy was really good and knowledgeable and a very great man.
I was born neurodivergent / developmentally disabled (ADHD + autism), and life gave me PTSD.
I used to try so hard to "mask" or hide my atypical brain, nervous system, and body.
To hide that I think laterally instead of linearly. To hide my fidgets and tics. To hide my neurological lack of coordination and muscle control.
I only truly began to live as an adult when I embraced the Neurodivergent Pride and MAD Movement.
Two movements that accept and celebrate supposedly "broken" brains.
We are who we are. Some of us are born this way. Medication and therapy can only do much. So it's better to be proud of who you are than to feel constant and overwhelming shame.
I am crazy, but I don't hurt anyone else. So what about it? I won't apologize or try to hide anymore.
U.S., how lucky you guys were that he went over to you. I really wished he'd stayed here in Scotland to entertain us.
you know what they say, sometimes someone needs to leave his country and go somewhere else to be ackwonledged by all....
Common truth.
'No prophet is accepted in his own hometown.' -Luke 4:24
Besides the Statue of Liberty, Craig Ferguson is one of the greatest gifts from another country. Thank you.
Jimi Hendrix for example :-)
I and many appreciate you loaning him to us and all. MY FAVORITE
The Scots exported so many great people, you Scots exported emigrants to America in the 18th Century and helped us gain independence from England and helped create the United States
The talk show Biz missies you Craig. You were definitely one of the best. Cheers !
I love it when the Crocs start waving !!
Come back Craigy! We miss ya lad!
When he said "I don't do that sort of thing" i almost spat my Pilsner Urquell all over my monitor. I love Craig Ferguson.
Craig’s show was way ahead of its time.
And then I found out Ferguson is a real US citizen. I became very proud of him. What a fine example of a human. Then to get acknowledged by Tutu had to be a massive boost.
i love this guy.... his was the only late night show i watched...
Not where I expected that to go. But, good for Tutu for saying that, and Ferguson for listening.
This is one man I would like to talk to.
I just saw the interview and now I understand why!
Come back, Craig! We love you!
I actually got to see Desmond Tutu speak in person. He was fantastic.
Brilliant to hear his normal voice
I miss Craig and rhe horse
Look kids, a legend
R.I.P Desmond Tutu 26th Dec 2021
Im impressed by Craig!😊
Craig has always been the man!
Tutu was an absolute legend of the human race. An absolutely awesome man; and he was hysterically funny 😂😂
I miss Craig on television.
If you go through enough talk show hosts videos you'll see a constant theme of prepared questions that the guest is waiting for the set up for wether it be for a joke or a story.
With Craig I think he had one card per guest with bullet points and sometimes seemed to only use it once.
He had a rare gift that very few chat show hosts have
I like you much, Craig Ferguson.
i ran into Sid the Cussing Rabbit in a bar in Texas and he told me he thought Ferguson was more of a diva after Tutu. Only he said it with a lot of cuss words. So, make of that what you will. He also told me the Cajun alligator got drunk one night and tried to eat him.
It's such a great interview. Well...most are great.
They did the same thing for Stephen Fry. They had the cold opening and I think a small monologue but there was no emails, no other guests, and none of the "What did we learn on the show tonight, Craig?"
I had a weird run-in with Archbishop Tutu once as well. I was an incredibly naive undergraduate, and I was taking an intro to African American studies course circa 1998. The professor, who was a former Black Panther Party member, told us we were not to miss the next class under any circumstances, but he refused to tell us why. When we arrived, the professor introduced AB Tutu, and Tutu spoke to us about where his head was at concerning the state of social existence in South Africa post-apartheid. Tutu was extremely critical of the ANC and Nelson Mandela, suggesting that despite black inclusion in the democratic process, little had changed in South Africa. He pointed out that some 85% of South Africa was still owned by whites, and many of these owners were not even white South Africans living in South Africa. Tutu continued on suggesting that if the landscape of ownership did not change, where black South Africans had much more of a stake in ownership, changes would be merely cosmetic and for the most part meaningless. He added that ownership should take a more collective form, and Mandela’s failure to address this fact had become a point of contention between the two old friends. The class reacted extremely negatively regardless of ethnicity or gender. They began attacking him and his position, and one of AB Tutu’s body guards became extremely defensive on Tutu’s behalf, suggesting that students in the US are too abstracted from what it looks like on the ground for black South Africans. I was confused at the resistance AB Tutu was receiving from the students, as his point was extremely salient. At the end of the talk, I walked up to AB Tutu and apologized for the lack of understanding my classmates demonstrated, and I completely agreed with his position. At this point, AB Tutu reached out for my hand and held it with both of his hands. He looked me in the eyes and said, “I am so sorry. You are going to have a very difficult road.” The comment shook me to my very core, but I knew with a degree of absolute certainty that AB Tutu knew something about me that it would take me years to unravel. Despite all of the struggles he had engaged in, it was incredible in hindsight to feel that these struggles never hardened him. The kindness of his eyes still haunt me, while at the same time giving me an odd sense of hope. This moment definitely opened my eyes to many realities that that twenty-three year old undergraduate could not have foreseen. You are loved and missed, Desmond. Hopefully someday, the world you were struggling for will find a foothold, and it will not all be for naught. Thank you.
lncredible anecdote. l had forgotten about Tutu and Mandela taking different paths. Huge admiration for both of them.
i am impressed by archbishop desmond tutu which led me here
LEGEND. Miss you Craig!
For some reason he really makes me remember Robin Williams :'( .. i hope he doesn't end up into depression like Robin :( .. you're strong Craig, i love you.
Why would you even make such a comment about Craig turning into Robin? What a horrible thing to say!
Tutu complimented him on his bit about Brittany Spears, which I thought is one of the historical highlights of TV. To say he is not going to mock a young woman on TV who is having a mental breakdown is obvious. But no-one else has ever said it.
Simon Dover that’s why I really love him. I love his story of being sobre. It was the best sharing that I’ve listened.
That Britney Spears talk I showed to so many people. I loved him from them on. If everyone could follow his example the world would have empathy, honesty, wisdom, and the best, humor to make life so much better for anyone. He is a great example how you can be flurry without being offensive too. Enjoying Craig reruns now. Thank you for posting.
Simon Dover Thank you so much for your worthwhile and praiseworthy comment!
Ananda D'Aquino Thank you for your supportive wonderful comments! Thumbs up!
kathleen murray Thank you so much for your also very right correct wonderful comments here which i support entirely! i completely and entirely applaud and support you and words. Thank you for your example!
i really fkn love craig ferguson
Man! I miss that guys show!
Love to you Craig always ❤️
I agree that Archbishop Desmond Tutu is an amazing human being!
Billy Cooke.......Ya know...Steve Martin said it best "It' s hard to listen to a banjo and be in a bad mood. Just the sound of it...puts you in a great place". Well...so it is with a Scotsman and their infectious accent and BRILLIANT sense of humour! Check out Craig on RUclips with the several visits of Billy Connolly. Soooooooo funny! I am a bit biased though...for my mum was from Scotland...a wee bit outside of Glasgow. I been there numerous times...and lived there for a while too. It should be on everyone's bucket list....ESPECIALLY Glasgow ....the Heart of Scotland
Thanks Desmond Tutu!
Saw that episode !!!! He's right !!!
Craig should be the next Doctor.
I'd watch that show.
hmm...i'm suspecting that the next doctor will be trans or gender fluid or non binary..one of those... in order to influence the kids.
I don't watch Dr Who ( could be cause I'm 40 years behind on episodes)
but if Craig was the doctor I would take more interest
the only episode I sat down and watched start to finish was the christmas episode with Nick Frost as Santa
Colin, why are you such a douchebag?
kamalindsey
- read the comment I replied to again, then come back and apologize.
Read Craig’s book “American by Choice” it’s probably on Amazon
I hope Book Passage are enjoying all the exposure from this video. Very nice marketing.
He should host the tonight show! He does such a good job on a super low budget show. Just think how good he would do with a actual show!
Indeed - and another excellent show. I have both saved on my hard drive.
Can you tell me the guys name?
Anyone else thinks that he sounds more scottish here than on the show? :P
Well said Mr Ferguson.
Top shelf, Comedy gold
Brilliant and Beautiful!!!!
Tutu spoke at my graduation ceremony a couple of years ago in Pretoria.
All I can say is that as impressive as the guy is on screen it cannot really compare to the power he exudes in person.
One of the only people I have met that truly and deeply impressed me.
As for the Zionist thing, if you understood the Dopper church version of the reasoning behind Apartheid you would understand his position and also why no-one should take Zionist moral exceptionalism seriously.
craig fergeson>? specific. I'm listening. I love him. , society needs it? .. his sarcasm? he's a good, better than jay and ltterman... in my mind anyways.
+Tundra14 I hope he profits without my influence.
Hah, I read that title as "the Guess Who changed his life."
No sugar tonight in your coffee!
Thats funnier than anything that has ever come out of Ferguson's mouth.
No Time for such nonsense. Obviously you're come Undone.
@DarkwingScooter I completely agree. I was had the privilege of hearing him speak to a leadership conference in person, and it was amazing. He made me laugh, he made me think, but most importantly he made me inspired.
He's such a cutie pie too. I just want to adopt (haha if only!)
I feel like he spent a lot of time in scotland after the show, because his accent here is more scottish than it was near the end of the show
I knew, too. It was in the description.
At 1:26 I missed Geoff Pjeterson saying "Yeah man, yeah... get off" or something like that.
I said that rabbi Hier is fanatic because he dedicated his whole life to Holocaust and Jewish cause. That simply makes it a fanaticism, behavior that involves extreme political cause. I think that people that dedicated their whole life to a single political thing like that can not see it objectively anymore, so his attacks on Tutu are not really relevant.
Anyway, I think that Tutu is calm and peaceful man, and that Craig is the most talented talk show host :)
I was raised Catholic, but they lost me when I was five and a nun told me that my dog couldn't go to heaven because she didn't have a soul. To that I thought in my mind in a 5 year year old's vocabulary. "My dog has more soul than you could even think about lady".
And, I decided that if my dog couldn't go to people heaven, then I would go to doggie heaven. I have a few friends there now, who'll put in a good word for me.
That's my local book store! Never noticed!
It's all about Craig.
Oh man I live like two minutes from there!
Excellent guy!
I skirted the idea of watching this video for sometime. I am a very big fan. I was stationed in Scotland in the late 70's. I saw The Who as well as Frank Zappa at the Apollo in Glasgow. it was whom I thought it might be. Desmond Tutu is right. you're a mad man amongst mad men.
