I'm about to fit laminate for the first time (I'm 63). Starting in the bedroom and then the living room and hall (we live in a small bungalow). You've made this look ridiculously easy and given me a bit more confidence, so thanks for this great video :)
Well explained! A note to any new installers; When he says to start the install on the left and work your way to the right, that means to start on the left against the wall lay that entire row then move over continue each row
Done plenty of these and this video is a must for all the gotchas. Nice work. If your doing a whole house invest in a small saw bench. It will save your back.
I cant thank you enough for that last piece of advice in the video at 5:07 about the covering gap. I have seen every video where the gap is created by spacers and don't say word about them. I am like what happend to that space in the final picture. Basically, you cover with wood board.
Great vid...thanks Craig. Something worth noting though is, if you've removed the skirting so as not to need scotia trim on the perimeter, you don't need to have the 10mm expansion gap inwards from the wall...the skirting board sits over and outwards from the wall...so the gap can be under and outwards from the wall.
And here is another magical easy fitting flooring. Where can I buy one? This could be the best tip you can give us, Craig. Also, I didn't get how you calculate the length of the last plank towards the wall!
I've got some used laminate from a neighbour just for a small area at the bottom of my stairs ... is it reusable? As some of the top tongues aren't on ..can it be salvaged?
Some good observations about safety below @writerNB. Yes I agree that safety specs are good idea, but what about a nose/mouth mask/ aspirator of some type? The dust generated from cutting laminate ( and incidentally mdf ) is some of the worst possible to breathe in. Absolutely avoid cutting laminate with power tools UNLESS YOU ARE MASKED UP!
oh yeah and like DIY channel says, you can do it in 1 day especially when someone doesnt want you cutting inside and YOU GOTTA WALK DOWNSTAIRS AND INTO THE FUCKING GARAGE TO CUT EVERY PEICE!!! Im totally not mad and had a lot of FUN!
What's the best insulation under the planks if the priority is to keep the feet warm from the cold concrete? (Underfloor heating is not an option because of height)
Nice vid (with a few provisos) : Yes - Leave a 10mm expansion gap (but u can establish the gap with spacers - little blocks 10mm in width) If you have to trim your end planks - Yes - Use a circular saw ... But the plank should be held securely before cutting - I would always use a workbench to secure a long plank like that - then cut. Craig is making it look very easy, but I suspect he's an experienced carpenter. If you're not, secure your plank before cutting with a tool as dangerous as a circular saw, please! Yes- Always use safety glasses when using a circular saw and wear grip-gloves. Yes - Fit floor beading for a nice finish at the edges... Not sure what "quadpede" is? Must be a scouse thing? :) PS: Cutting floor beading at the corners is a bit fiddly - you might wish to check out this vid here that shows you how to cut 45 degree angles : ruclips.net/video/Z3--pCZB_Bc/видео.html
Love the video! My question is, it looks like the laminate flooring is being placed over carpet pad. Is that right? Can I skip the step of removing my carpet pad? (It's glued to the floor and would be a massive pain to remove.)
not really you can always just continue laminating into the next room but you have to make sure its dead straight otherwise your flooring will look skewed. t-molds make it easier so you dont have to worry about that happening
Excellent. This gives me the confidence to take on the task. Just need to make some careful measurements tp make sure my final row is a decent width. Thanx
Can you glue down laminate, I've got a chipboard type floor, not concrete and want to glue down floor so it's not springy - will the expansion fuck me or does it never really expand and contract?
When you are connecting the floor boards length wise end to end and you have the end tongue that connects sometimes you have a cut that off there. Can you still use it tho there is no interlocking end ?
very informative for the beginner Graig could have been more technical and gone into more detail, but the purpose was to keep to the basics and make it easy to understand the Simplicity of laying laminate flooring, Great Video !!!
You wouldn't have scraps of flooring for the first few pieces. Why rely on scraps when you can spend £5 on a laminate flooring kit that provides proper spacers?
Very much appreciate the video and particularly the safety aspect but it would be nice if you had gloves on as handling saw cut wood increases the chances of splinters into your skin. Thanks
The vast majority of people will be laying laminate flooring in a room with skirting boards already attached and will either have to cut the bottom of the skirting with an oscillating multi-tool to allow the boards to fit underneath or fit beading all around. So although the video is helpful it doesn't depict a typical real world installation.
You deliberately left out the hardest bit - how to install a laminate board on to another board. You showed us how to fit an end board but didn't show us how to put boards in the middle of the run - do you lift them to get them locked in? or don't you lift them? which is it?
While you can cut laminate flooring with a circular saw, a laminate flooring cutter makes the job a lot easier. And they're not that expensive: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B0BYY4Q/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00B0BYY4Q&linkCode=as2&tag=ytaj-20&linkId=GFOTU5HPAPFVXLE2
In the real world you never get a room like this, no doors, no real insets, no skirting boards. Does show the basics, but no sign of you having measured the room across to see how the planks will fall at the other end as the last thing you want is a board that's 2cm wide.
You will find it much easier if you actually start at the door and work away, that way you can slide your first piece under the door frame once you've trimmed the bottom of the frame.
This is the only channel i have found thats SHOWS you how to attach the second board on the second row. BRILLIANT thankyou
Thanks
Thats because british 🇬🇧 people get straight to the point. 👍

Wow, he only said this a year ago ... people age really fast doing DIY 🤣
He left out the hardest bit. He didn't show us how to lift the boards to get the next one in. Setting people up to fail.
So far the best, easy, simple video.... thanks
Well explained! A note to any new installers; When he says to start the install on the left and work your way to the right, that means to start on the left against the wall lay that entire row then move over continue each row
It was badly explained. He left out the hardest bit, lifting boards along the run to get them to lock in.
Among the ones I watched this is the best video that describes installing laminate flooring...
Jay Craig so true
Done plenty of these and this video is a must for all the gotchas. Nice work. If your doing a whole house invest in a small saw bench. It will save your back.
Top stuff, loved this guy, proper down to earth and nice clear guidance

Best video I’ve seen. Excellent explanation. Thank you Craig👍
Brilliant video, very informative and looks like everything needed to complete a basic floor. Thanks for posting!
Great vid...thanks Craig. Mate, you make the job seem very easy. Thumbs up for your time.
Thanks Craig, you make it look so easy i'm going to have a go at it, thankyou again.
Your instructions are nice and clear and no long intros as with other videos. Well done Craig.
And here is another magical easy fitting flooring. Where can I buy one? This could be the best tip you can give us, Craig. Also, I didn't get how you calculate the length of the last plank towards the wall!

Thank you for the advice! My sister and I did my entire home, and it looks AMAZING!
Lol bet it's a shit hole ya scab
Clear and To-the-point instructions. Good video.
maybe someone mentioned it before and I missed it, but what padding/under-layment did you use, if any. And how vital or necessary is that?
Nice editing....all works like magic!
Is there a link please for the skirting that has been used
A nice instructive vid clip, I've just started doing my first floor. Shame about the piss takers and criticisers on the comments.........
Great video as always Craig................
I'm getting ready to do our house what do you think about the laser tape measure I have one I got my square footage pretty simple but is it accurate
I've got some used laminate from a neighbour just for a small area at the bottom of my stairs ... is it reusable? As some of the top tongues aren't on ..can it be salvaged?
Good vid brother. What I really wanted to see was the layer below, I see it and got it. Thats what I'll be using, those foam strips.
The best video that helped me so much

so? i wouldnt either lmao... its not hard your just lazy

Hey where can i get boards that thin? B&Q has the thick boards but I'd rather have the thinner ones.
What's the best insulation under the planks if the priority is to keep the feet warm from the cold concrete? (Underfloor heating is not an option because of height)
What about the door jams? And the carpet bar?
Nice vid (with a few provisos) : Yes - Leave a 10mm expansion gap (but u can establish the gap with spacers - little blocks 10mm in width) If you have to trim your end planks - Yes - Use a circular saw ... I think he was saying quad bead/beading
Do you have a trade back ground or jack of all trades and master of non?
Love the video! My question is, it looks like the laminate flooring is being placed over carpet pad. Is that right? Can I skip the step of removing my carpet pad? (It's glued to the floor and would be a massive pain to remove.)
Lisa Semmler no you have to remove the padding
Quick and helpful video 👌🏽
Thanks Craig excellent work,, 👌
whats the name of that metal tool you used to hammer in the end?
GeoFagus 123 no idea but they sell it at lowes
if you turn the board around and Mark your length from the wall back to the sec last board you don't need to use a measuring tape

Nice accuracy free-handing the circle saw like that. I would hurt myself.
I was told we have to use a T-mold instead of continuous flooring into the next room. Is this true? I'm so bummed if it is!
not really you can always just continue laminating into the next room but you have to make sure its dead straight otherwise your flooring will look skewed. t-molds make it easier so you dont have to worry about that happening
Good video brother, very helpful!
Thank you for this interesting video. It wil help me.
Isn't this video technically, how to lay laminate floor without craig Phillips
👏 👏 😅
Excellent video. Many thanks,
so dont you have to worry if the room isnt square??
How do I lay the floor with a shaped stone fireplace.
Jennifer Haine if you need to ask that question you need to hire a professional
If you don’t have the ‘L’-shaped tool for the end piece, couldn’t you just fit it to the previous board, then fit both?
Showing options for fitting around door frames and transitions would have made this perfect.
Thanks for the tips!
Excellent. This gives me the confidence to take on the task. Just need to make some careful measurements tp make sure my final row is a decent width. Thanx

Always expand
Nice job mate!
not forgettin' the saftey specks. :) that seems funny to me.
thanks for the tut.

nice one mate. and cool accent sounds like manchester.
he is a scouser u moron
Nice video, thanks!
la this got us sorted.. cheers
Cut on back with circular saw on front only with handsaw for clean finish5
very informative for the beginner Graig could have been more technical and gone into more detail, but the purpose was to keep to the basics and make it easy to understand the Simplicity of laying laminate flooring, Great Video !!!
why not use scraps of the flooring it self for spacers??

after laminate expands it does not contract to close the gap
Great tips.
I can't find a shirkur shaw or shaefty shpecks anywhere. Where can I buy those?
Excellent video, thanks
How to lay vynl flooring

Darius Dalrymple you can remove them..only takes about 15 minutes
You deliberately left out the hardest bit - how to install a laminate board on to another board. You showed us how to fit an end board but didn't show us how to put boards in the middle of the run - do you lift them to get them locked in? or don't you lift them? which is it?
hiya can you pllease can you tell me how much workmen charge roughly to put down beading for ,1 room
***Suziwooz *** beading as in caulk? 1 12X12 bedroom..id charge $40 unless youre farther than 15 miles then id ask for gas money too
My hallway is old floor boards what do i put over it before laying laminate flooring? Im a single mum trying to do this alone in a budget 🙈
Cc you should buy some laminate flooring underlay. I got the 5 mm one. Good luck.
Ian Underground thankyou x
a dust mask would be good with that mdf backing. You are still young Craig so don't go breathing all that shit in.
he also forgot the foam inserts to pack between the expansion space or the floor could move and come apart over time
cork rather ***********
@@girlsdrinkfeck That's not what edge packing is for!
They get removed after you finish laying the floor so your comment is completely redundant
@@v82mp95 lmao wrong
nice thanks this helped
And what about your ear defenders?
Tuppy Brill man up snowflake
thank you
Craig looks exactly like Fred Flintstone in the video thumbnail.
thanks
Worth watching just to hear him say jig-shaw
