    Really useful video! I've just had some Quickstep flooring delivered for installing in an old flat. Considering this underlay or potentially the Vitrex underlay boards seeing as they've got lots of positive reviews on Screwfix. Just curious if you've had any experience with using those or something similar vs Duralay? The old floorboards have been covered up with 12mm ply but there are a couple of small uneven areas so not sure which would be best. Happy to spend a bit more if it's worth it!

    This why I'm a big fan of your channel. All the others don't show the annoying problems you forever come across. 80% of my work comes from one builder. He's a lovely guy, proper old school and keeps me and his two brickies in work but everything is so shambolic and rushed that alot of my day is spent trying to get over things like this. At college we were taught always order 10% more than you need, he seems to have been taught to always order 10% less than you need and cross your fingers. I wouldn't mind but when he's moaning about how long everything is taking me it gets abit old.

    • @thetallcarpenter
      @thetallcarpenter  3 года назад +2

      Hi Kallum. What a great comment.🤩 When doing my videos I am very careful not to be a moaner. Carpenters can be known for moaning, and, usually its justified. BUT, I also think it would be false of me not to mention all of the challenges we face as carpenters, even the ones that could have been avoided if others were just doing their jobs properly. I could have gone further in the video and shown that one door lining leg was 20mm in the screed, and only 1.5 meters across the hall way, another was a couple of mil out of it!!!. Squaring faults up before we can move forward is just part of our job I guess, even if its annoying. I'm lucky that the 2 developers I do a lot of work for are great tradesmen themselves, and do listen to my input, that ultimately, makes the job go smoother and produces a higher quality end result.😎 Cheers.

    I find you can get much more use out of a multi tool blade if you keep it cooled down, by dipping it in water occasionally when in use. A bit like when you’re grinding a chisel or plane blade.

    Yes the multi tool is brilliant for cutting flush or 10mm off the floor to loose the laminate floor underneath I've always used my jack cut it does the job perfectly just a bit, well actually a lot more hard work and yes the click floor is really good with the spring tongue you don't have to cut the board short to allow the length of the tongue to be knocked along, you done a good job there muka, and I also cut the first board into the door threshold and rip the first row down but I get y you didn't because you would have a inch n half rip the other side nice to see experienced chippy , Paul (35 yrs on the tools) wolves.

      Hi there. 👋 The manufacturer recommends no less than a 300mm lap, (12"). On larger rooms, I like to maintain the same lap for the whole floor as I think it looks smarter. Hi mate great video, I just wondered is it possible to get through a door way like the last one on the video if the board width finishes either side of the door lining, I have a scenario at home where I have two door ways close together opposite another two door ways , and even if I start with the long join inside the door way on one side it has to finish either side of the lining on the other side because there are two door waysnext to each other. I can't see another way other than to cut around the lining both sides and try and lift it down and under in one piece because of the board length and the nibs of wall in between, but I don't think it will bend enough to go underneath, does that make sense, I wish I could draw you a picture

    • @thetallcarpenter

    I have 2 small areas no wider than a plank ( 83 x 49 inches and 81 x 42 inches). I was tempted not to use a stagger but read that you really need to have one to prevent planks popping up etc. Would the above pattern be ok using 2 plans without a stagger and a run of 2 with stagger. Hi Matthew. Do you mean Quick Step Elite flooring as in the video?. It uses the Uniclick system which, I think is exclusive to Quick Step. I started away from the door like a melon and now i've got some horrible gaps around my finished side door lining because my floor has to be lifted to a 35 degree angle. When you ran in the final corridor, I noticed some were wall to wall cuts in one piece, and others you put in two pieces, obviously because it looks better. Did you just decide where to put two pieces in or is there a general rule of thumb regarding this? Again, I really hope that doesn't sound daft. Cheers Del

    Anybody ever come across a problem with static buildup on laminate? Just fit fibre underlay and a normal 10mil laminate, nothing fancy, covering about 35m2 in our kitchen. Whenever I walk over it and touch something metallic I am getting zapped. Well, not always, but I've had some serious jolts last few days and it's making me paranoid as hell before I touch anything. I never knew it was a thing but looking online apparently it is. They say clean and mop the floors helps, open to any more advice if anybody has experienced this in the past!?
    Edit: Just read on Quick Step website that they are treated with anti-static, so maybe worth mentioning as a feature. My laminate isn't Quick Step, and certainly isn't anti-static!

    • @thetallcarpenter
      @thetallcarpenter  3 года назад +1

      Hi Marco. I've never heard of that before, and certainly understand why its making you nervous.😣 It almost sounds like you need something metal connecting the floor to the walls like a lightning conductor. I know it sounds crazy, but, the static energy is obviously building up and transferring through you.😬 Its a very intriguing issue.

    • @thetallcarpenter
      @thetallcarpenter  3 года назад

      Hi Joseph. I think I might do a short video to clear this up. It is now laid foil side up and I quote from the fitting guide of 26/11/2020, 'The underlay should be laid foil side up'. Interfloor have clearly changed their approach to the fitting of this underlay, and it would be bad if guys were fitting it, out of habit, the wrong side down, especially if there was a problem that led to a warranty claim.👍 Cheers.
