Winter Vanlife in Isolation - Vlog 59
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 6 сен 2024
- After returning from travelling around Europe we had to Isolate in our van for 10 days, while we can stock our cupboards of food and carry enough water for 10 days we knew we would really struggle to heat the van for that long, let alone power the van from solar in a very wintery UK.
So we needed to make big changes to our heating & electrical systems as well as deal with the isolation for that long too.

Another great video. Gadgets, recipes , tips and van life noises from a lovely cheery couple.
Thanks David 😁👍🏻❤️
You make the best out of isolation time, van modifications, Bagles (with more cinnamon), a Chad "living the van life" style fire, I thought (dont know why) that Solo Stove is only available in the US but checked your website now first time and found the product link, thank you for the link and your very interesting website, I will check it more detailed after catching up with your latest videos. Stay positive in the isolotation - thanks for your videos, good to see that others face the same challenges and stay positive and make the best out of it.
Helen made your bagels for breakfast today. Very tasty and so simple. Definitely will be having them again 👍👍
Oooh glad you enjoyed them.. they’re amazing 😍😍
Well done guys for setting yourselves up to be safe and comfy. Many people who don't full time in their vans won't know the joys of Winter vanning in The UK. It's why Spain is so popular! One of the reasons I love your stuff is because you don't sugar coat it. I agree totally with using the engine for power. We've got our roof mounted air con, as well as our 2000-4000 Watt inverter connected to our engine battery. It allows us to use both without hook up. Another "gadget" is a battery manager. It allows power to transfer from Leisure batteries to engine battery, that way, the solar panels charge all three, weather permitting of course! It's all about adapting in this game! Thanks for your output and stay safe.
Thanks Ste, it’s definitely what they’re made for.. full time winter in a van in the UK is not the same as anywhere we’ve been.. if it wasn’t for the pandemic then we’d still be there..
sounds like you’ve a sturdy set up there, I’ve often wondered how long it’ll take for john to consider aircon in the hab of the van but I think he wants the roof space for solar 😁😂
@@johnmandy We've got two 85 Watt panels on our roof too! I'd suggest, It's something you both should think about. it fits in s standard 400MM roof vent and adds about 15-20 Kilos, model depending, to the weight of the van. It's been ideal when we want to go out and have to leave our dog in the van, during the day. If he is interested in our unique set up, (it can be used on hook up, or inverter by swapping the plug hole!), let me know and I"ll send you an e-mail with the way its wired in.
You guys are so resilient ,good to get the reality About real living in a van life not all Roses some thorns too ,very best wishes to you both ,take care hope to meet you when uk opens up and we can travel .Cant wait until We get away in our van ,I also installed a diesel heater in our van and well worth it .Take Care and Stay Safe and healthy both and Cooper too .
You are so funny. Glad you've survived quarantine. Look forward to your next xx
Ah, John, that's lovely you invited us over to join your fire. I am certainly pretending to be there, sipping something nice (probably ghuehwein in this weather! We still have some snow on the ground here, it was amaaazing Sunday!). I LOVE your fire! Must send to the Man so he can order one (very hard to get him motivated for Vanning now we can't go to Spain, though your videos get close to doing it). poor old Van, she just sits outside our house, all cold and lonely..
We’ll soon be back out there and chatting round a campfire about all this 👍🏻😁
Good on you two makin' the best of it through this challenging time! Don't pay attention to bellends who have nothin' better to do with their lockdown than to criticize lovely people who share their adventures as you do so well!!! What a blessing you are, John & Mandy. Thank you!
Thanks David ☺️👍🏻❤️
Worries to no worries is epic cos life is tough enough. 👍Well done.
Love how you guys are so down to earth, showing the good and the worst parts about alternative living.
Love all that cooking too 😋
Can’t live without loads of bread, keep em coming. 😊
Aww thank you ☺️❤️ I always like to make sure we have bread making stuff in as you never know - it’s just waiting 4 hours for it that’s usually the problem 😂
That fire pit is awesome, I was so judgemental... thinking it was an old washing machine drum at first ... but then I remembered Johns sophistication with gadgets & engineering
Washing machine drums are cool too but this is another level, can’t wait to cook on it 😁👍🏻
@@johnmandy now that’s a video !
Yes, looks great. But £284.95 that stings a bit
Made some of Mandy's Babs made into buns not bagels, lovely will make some more
Love watching your video 📹 keep them coming
Thank you for watching Francis 😁👍🏻
Funnily enough the two ingredient dough popped up on my youtube....some fab ideas for pizza 😍 glad you three are keeping warm, soon be spring xx
Weight watchers have been hogging this superb shortcut for years.. it’s so amazing, you can do all sorts with it (and ice got a few ideas too 😁👍🏻)
No matter what John says, coffee is worth using the last of your power for,
Take care guys 🙂🙂🙂
You tell him Douglas..!! To be fair he is really good with allowing me extra usage for coffee - makes me my first one every morning.. 😁👍🏻
@@johnmandy ok then,he,s not so bad, ha ha ,you guys take care🙂🙂🙂
The British winter.... shame we had to come back from southern Spain earlier. Currently 20 degrees. Hey Ho! You guys are doing great, problem solving and adding some great additions for colder weather.
I know, right? It was getting colder while we were there.. 🙈 we’re very impressed with the improvements so far 😁👍🏻
Glad you are doing ok. I agree with you John about the diesel engine, most backup generators are diesel, they dont drive anywhere, the engine on my boat was diesel, used to run it for half hour to heat my water for the day, unless i was plugged into shore power and then i had an immersion heater in the tank. i love diesel engines.
Thanks 😁👍🏻 they certainly are well hard machines 🦾
Brilliant episode!
Loved the fact you still sit outside and enjoy proper camp life...so many van people just sit in there vans...
Well done...
Loved the bagel recipes...
Where can I find all the recipes. I know you ( Mandy) did mention about a PDF....
I made the paella you did the other day...it was blooming marvellous.....fed us both 2 dinners and lunch...
Hubby got me a lovely big lidded frying pan/ shallow pan....for Christmas. Did it in that...
So glad your all warm n toastie and have got the lovely new diesel heater now...Mr Cooper will no doubt approve of that...lol
Keep safe n well....xx
Thanks Tracie, I’m cataloguing them still to be popped on an easy access web page first then in lots more more detail in a PDF but that will be a while yet..
Glad you enjoyed the paella, I need to do that again as it was brilliant ❤️
Coop loves the new heater, he’s really feeling the cold since we got back
@@johnmandy ah thank you...
My pan and I are eagerly standing by...will make Bagels tomorrow..
We’re all feeling the cold but especially you guys and beautiful coop having had a bit of lovely winter sun....x
...I think we are all dreading this winters heating bill, with lock down and stay at home in front of the fire, just a few more weeks end of Feb. and the temperature will be creeping back up....................
Oh yes, definitely.. hopefully we’ll have a lovely mild spring after such a cold winter 😁👍🏻
Wow. That tapping on the heater would drive me feckin crazy.
We’ve made it quieter now thankfully.. can’t hear it over the telly anyway 😁😂
Great Vlog stay safe and enjoy.
Thank you 😁👍🏻
"just pretend you're at a meetup" ah man you nearly made me cry 😂

Just catching up on you. Blooming admirable what you both have achieved. So informative and helpful. Missed you in TDM. The burger looked great though. Presently in Sainte Suzanne near Le Mans waiting for our covid pcr test Monday in Neufchatel with the vets also. Trying to bring some sunshine to you from southern Spain. The snowbirds will return. Keep safe.
Thanks, we need sunshine 😁👍🏻

Definitely a good change/addition, you too 😁👍🏻❤️
Awesome guys cheers 👍🏻
Thanks Clare 😁👍🏻
Enjoyed the mini meet, sitting (virtually) round the fire with you and listening to your chat. Thanks for the invite.
Hope to do it again one day in real life. 😀
I think we needed to put some soundtrack of people murmuring and laughing in the background so we felt more meet like.. it was lovely though, thinking of the next time we can do it again ❤️
Thanks both for another interesting video as usual. Hoping for milder weather for you to save on gas. You are amazing both of you, keep positive. Best wishes Carol & Steve in the Isle of Man 🇮🇲🇮🇲xx

Hahaha.. he does make us chuckle 😁❤️
Hey guys! That fire pit looks fabulous, can’t wait to see you cook on it! Keep your peckers up during the rest of lockdown ... may the adventures continue soon! ❤️❤️
Hiya Guys 😁👋🏻 we managed to get the pre seasoning sorted tonight ready for something tomorrow, might start with a good ole Hot pot and dumplings.. thank you ❤️ hope you guys are doing ok too and that Rufus is making up for being furloughed 😁🐾🐶🦴
More cinnamon!!! That's OUR slogan! I always laugh so hard when a recipe tells me "One teaspoon of cinnamon"... Yeah, and then some! I put a big stick of cinnamon (or "canela", a lot like the Dutch "kaneel"!) in my Rooibos tea, with 2 cloves and lots of shaved orange peel - leave it for a goodly while, it's yummmmmm, smells amazing too. The cinnamon, if left long enough, sweetens the tea beautifully.
Glad to see you are all safe and well👌😁,and making the best out of isolation, thanks as always and keep safe guys 👍
Thanks Peter 😁👍🏻
Nice Vlog thanks for sharing
Thank you and thanks for watching 😁👍🏻
Hang in there guys
We will.. thank you 😁👍🏻
Jeez, it made my feet cold watching you guys around that fire 🔥 Great to see you actively working to deal with the issues instead of just hanging on and suffering. Proper adventure stuff. Looking forward to the Dutch oven in action. 🙌🔥🙌
Thanks Geoff, we upgraded to big ole lined waterproof boots too that keep our feet toastie warm.. 🔥🙌🏻
Great vlog as always. Those bagels looked amazing. I bet it smelled amazing when they were baking. Welcome back to blighty.
They smelled amazing at the dough stage then all the way through 🤤🤤
Hi John and Mandy , joined your channel last month, been watching your back catalogue. Pat and I love Spain and enjoyed all the episodes.
We are doing a van build at the moment so your hints an tips are invaluable.
Keep up the great work 👍
Thanks Stephen and Pat 😁❤️ good luck with the van build 👍🏻
You two always make me smile ♥️♥️ ...I’ll have to try those bagels and I’m now off to check out that fire pit 👍
What surprises me most is you continue to make great vlogs in the middle of a lockdown ...thanks guys ..stay safe 👍
Thanks Tam 😁👍🏻❤️
Can't beat an open 🔥... It just has a fascination all of its own. I too have a B2B waiting to fit , I went for a REDARC. This video is great... Shows another side of vanlife...
Thank you, it’s brilliant isn’t it? Tuesdays vid is all b2b related 😁👍🏻
Great video guys, good to see real life vanlife. Stay safe and enjoy your freedom! 😍😎👍🏼
Thanks Ian 😁👍🏻 we went to co-op and bought bread and cheese 😂
I am living in a caravan and I got 2 safefill lpg bottles they last about a week. I got a little generator to give me extra power when I need it. I got a gaming laptop and it love the power. I was thinking to put a night heater in the caravan they safe so much on gas and don’t use much fuel. Stay safe
They certainly are more fuel efficient than lpg heaters 😁👍🏻
Love your videos guys thank you both, I wonder if you could do dumplings with the two ingredient dough? awww beef stew and dumplings in the Dutch oven👍 one of my favourite wintery meals. Stay warm and happy ♥️
I think you can 😁 I’d put some herbs in too I think - I do have a packet of suet in though so I’ll probably use that first off.. I do have another recipe waiting to use the 2 ingredient dough for though 🤤❤️

Just had a catch up!! Great to see you enjoying the cold and wet snap we are having!!! If there is one good thing in self isolating is it gives you time to make plans for the future and the many trips to well who knows. Stay safe keep well from adam from the white horse on the hill!

Always good entertainment. Thanks Guys.. Stay safe.
Thanks Guys 😁👍🏻
Think I might have worked out where you’ve gone, but so long as you’re safe, that’s the main thing. Mandy will have to ration her coffee at the rate the power banks going down.
Stay well, stay safe
Me...? Ration coffee..? Oooh I don’t know about that.. it’s doing so well now with the b2b and the fire pit - get the kettle on as soon as the fire is established and that’s my evening coffee/tea/hot chocolate sorted 😁👍🏻
If that "Fire pit" boils an kettle within "1.5hrs" . Its an winner in my eyes! (after witnessing the last debacle) 😂😉"👊" 👌👍👍👍.

I did the same face as Mandy when you said 8% for the coffee maker 😂 drink tea Mand! Are you now saying the same as me ....’why didn’t I get a diesel heater sooner?’! I agree with Mandy it just seems to be a better, drier heat. Stay safe guys and thanks for the upload x
Haha.. yeah, I use the Nespresso machine to make tea too 😂 although tonight I used the fire pit 👍🏻 definitely a better heat from the diesel heater too 😁👍🏻
@@johnmandy I went out and fired mine up to run everything while she’s standing. We had our tea and watched a bit of RUclips. I was sat in my vest top with the windows cracked open! When we finally came back inside we were shocked to see it was frozen solid outside, it was soooo toasty in the van. I’ve had Truma in my caravans in the past and this diesel heater knocks the socks off them for sure 😊
Nice one guys, bet your glad you're out of isolation ! Take care. Oh & a Silver Screen as someones already mentioned makes a HUGE difference.
Thank you, we managed a big walk with coop and bought cheese and bread - brilliant 😁😂
We said if there was one more suggestion for silver screens that we’d buy a set from Amazon prime so guess what’s now on the way 😂🙈

Hi guys. Really good but difficult video to watch as you have had to think literally on your feet to essentially survive our nasty winter that we seem to be having. It seems like it’s adversity to the power of adversity at present but you’ve shown us how these situations can be handled in a positive manner. Some good tips there - b2b, using your engine, diesel heater, gassinator etc and with your seal of approval, sales will no doubt be rocketing as we speak.
Well done giving us something to be positive about in the most negative time I think I’ve ever experienced in my 60 plus years, and for that both Mal and I are grateful. Take care in the coming week and look forward to Tuesdays description of the additional b2b.
Thank you so much Dave ❤️🙏🏻 that’s so lovely of you to say. I think when not given much choice you have to grab every idea you can and we’re very lucky that we managed to pull them off to now be more than comfortable considering the weather. John has always been one for finding solutions and refusing to be beaten so he is perfect to have around. It is such a strangely negative time but I’m sure things will be on the up soon, the weather will get warmer, we’ll see friends and family and hope will fill our hearts once again ❤️❤️
I hope we get the chance to meet Mal and yourself sometime after all this as your comment are always so uplifting and lovely to read
@@johnmandy we would definitely look forward to that. Thank you
Looking good guys! Lovely bagels Delicious!
Thanks Elaine 😁👍🏻
Good to see you conquering the bad weather. Cooper must be missing his long walks. You've inspired me to get ingredients for bagels next trip - never tried any type of bread or cake cooking before.
For a hob powered oven I use a cast iron skillet with wire mesh on top raised with two stainless barbecue BBQ kebab sticks - or turn ends of wire down. This almost eliminates heat conduction and burning. Foil can be used on the mesh to create radiation barrier. An upturned baking dish creates the what is now a convection oven. You'll need oven glove to lift the dish. John's non contact infrared thermometer ideal for getting temperature correct.
Ah interesting, must try my new cast iron Dutch oven and see if that’s better 😁👍🏻
21 Degrees here in Spain.......We are in no hurry to be locked down and freezing our nuts off back home just yet, hopefully when we get back the weather will have picked up a bit. We feel for you guys and cooper.

Hello John and Mandy, had five campers in the past , had a kontiki with motor bike ramp on the back, dozen years ago, had a medusa how ever you spell it on the back, 2300 watts I think off petrol
I thought it was great, always said a Honda suitcase generator would be a must , if ever again. You've got a big garage, you could have one. Pull the cord , loads of power , nice back up for the shitty weather we get, all the best! Craig in Coventry 😊
Thanks Craig, we don’t really want to use our payload to cart around a genny and petrol when we can use the van engine and general driving/solar otherwise. Thanks for watching 😁👍🏻
