    Gosh...watching this again has made me really glad I’ve downloaded the ‘What three words’ app onto my phone. We do boating on the Norfolk Broads.

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  3 года назад +2

      It's definitely useful to be able to give 999 your position ... try not to faceplant into the canalside though, can't recommend it at all! M

    • @GenaF
      @GenaF 3 года назад +1

      It's a fantastic app, I'd recommend it to everyone. I'd only downloaded it a few days before needing it last year when driving along I could see the corner of the field beside us was alight and the two poles holding up the transformer for that village's electric, had flames licking up them. The fire brigade took ages to come and we were only 10 miles from Norfolk/Cambs civilisation but from my description to the fire chief and his men, they concluded it was 'Arson again' so I assume they'd had a spate of random fires at the time.
      I was so thankful for the three words app /// I wouldn't have been able to call the fire service if I'd not had it.

    For future use when contacting emergency services try adding the app what 3 words to your phone. It gives you 3 words which relate to a location, I am told by a blood biker that it's used by the emergency services and will enable them to locate you very precisely without pubs or postcodes. It's also very handy for arranging to meet up with other people for large or ill defined locations.

    I don't know about the CRT but when on a 24hr mooring at Weybridge on the Thames, the boat in front had engine trouble and I lent him some tools. In conversation he told me he had been there 3 days waiting for parts, he had reported this to the river patrol, they noted it and said no problem let us know when it's fixed. I'm sure the CRT would be the same though you just need to show some proof. Glad it all turned out OK

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  5 лет назад +1

      THE CRT is also quite accommodating, but as there's no patrol to speak of you've got to call a central line and go through a few steps to eventually get in contact with the local team; it's not a particularly wearisome process, but you try not to go through with it too often unless there's a very serious reason not to move along. M

    I understand much of what Mike went through. Last spring I collapsed from dehydration. No damage, just my system shutting itself down. It was in the subway, so things could have been as bad as your fall or worse. I am very glad you were treated quickly and recovered quite fast, though clearly not as fast as you thought. .Please take care of yourselves. Canal life can be hard, especially if you bounce your head off the hard bits. I expect one worried look from Jo said more than anything I could write. Good Luck and God bless you both.

    The silliest thing I did while boating was jump into 15 feet of water thinking it was a foot while beaching on an ocean island. It wouldn't have been too bad had the water been warmer than 6c, what a wake up that was. Boating can go from relaxing and enjoyable to expensive and dangerous in the same morning.

    Well, this video was a little scary. As i am watching you can see Michael fall, then you see Jo get off and on the ground and i was like a cry baby. I am really glad you were okay. Concussions can be really bad. I know from experience , but my happened when i was working onboard the Train i work going to Chicago. And i see it has now been 3 years 2 days to the date this happened. So we know Jo is much more comfortable driving the boat. Hugs to you both and George.

    P.S. I also get the cracks and clicks in my neck and I've found the craniocradle and the miracle ball method (massage balls) help a lot; they are very similar but both worth getting. It goes without saying that you should research it and talk to your Doctor first. When you chose to sleep lying down again an Orthopaedic pillow is also a good thing to try out, although they do take a bit of getting used to.

    Glad it wasn't worse . But to me what sticks out more than anything is the fact that even during a medical emergency you still had the curtasy to think of others that might need to fill there water tank. . Bravo Zulu on that. It's a shame that those (insert rude word) people that were stopping you from using the lock didn't know what the word curtasy meant. Anyway glad you're ok, just be careful both of you, you see just how quickly that happened.

    I am sitting here realizing this vlog is nearly 3 yr old but I am glad you survived. It is true that injury is not far away. Last July a guy with a 32 ft boat was in the top lock at Soulbury three locks when he hung his boat up on the cill in a 72 ft lock. Ya!. We got his boat secured so it would not slip off and damage the skeg but we were hung up for 24 hr waiting for the CRT guys. We were waiting at the bottom lock. When they got him refloated and the pounds refilled we wanted to make sure somebody didn't leap frog us. Now I wear padded fingerless bicycle gloves because my hands are dry due to I think my diabetes and are easily cracked which is not fun. However, in the rush I grabbed a windlass and was in the middle of dropping a paddle when due to my lack of focus and grip the windlass slipped out of my hand and pinwheeled. It struck my left arm above the wrist on the outside and I was certain it was at least fractured. Of course the blood flowed. I was very lucky. A bit of ice and a dressing and good to go but lucky.
    One final comment is by now you will have made Bristol I expect and seen the SS Great Britain exhibit. What a great piece of history, Brunel was one clever dude and well ahead of his peers.

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  4 года назад

    It would seem to be a relatively simple task to transfer the CRT database of locks, bridges, water points, ELSAN, winding holes, etc. to the 999/111 people along with GPS and Postal Codes. Likewise, map books of the canals could be updated with Postal Codes.

      From the brief description I got from the poor soul who had to take my 999 call (at the insistence of 111) during the mooring pin incident (a few videos later on the K&A than this one), the 999 system is the only one with GPS access, as well as satellite maps. The 111 folk have only a postal database and a rough ability lookup and dispatch services to you once they know your post code. They'll helpfully aid you in looking up that postcode if you can give them a street address or the name of a pub or school, but until they've got the postcode their system doesn't allow them to do much. Which is why they handed me off to 999 when we were in a particularly rural area with no landmarks to provide. I dare say it could be improved, but it seems to have been thought primarily to be a system for non-emergencies encountered at home or work. M

    May I pass on some advice?
    A short explanation first. A mirror hit me on the back of the head dazing me. Nevertheless, a few minute later everything seemed to be okay, so I thought nothing more of it. The next morning however, the back of my head was so painful my brain felt swollen and I had a long symptoms list. A week or so later everything was back to normal and I just forgot all about it. Until, six months later when I collapsed and thought I was having a heart attack. The symptoms list returned with a vengeance and was a thousand times worse. To make matter worse every instinct I had to power on through, exercise my way back to health, push myself, ignore it, etc all turned out to be the worse possible things to do. And my stubbornness only made it worse and worse until well I won't go into any more detail only to say rest and when you're tired of resting rest some more and pace yourself.

      +Kevin Dean Thank you for all that! Scary stuff. I've been through a couple of these, so I'm taking it quite slow where I can. So far it seems to be a consistently better every day sort of progression, so knock wood that continues. Cheers! M

The worst of it was for the first 6 months I thought I'd fully recovered. I like the pun (minimal list) by the way. Sorry to hear about you event and I'm sure you don't want anyone to joke. But i have to say it "I've fallen and i can't get up". Are you feeling old. And another would be keep you boat SHIP SHAPE. Keep it clean of pieces of wood laying around coil your ropes and stow everything your not using. Hope your better soon and George seems to be adjusting well. Another simple question. Do you not have gangplank to use so you dont have to hope from boat to land?

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  7 лет назад

      +tpp2001 We're in the process of making a new gangplank, due to old one rotting through. But in this case one was absolutely not necessary, our ropes were cooled and not involved, and the wood at fault was part of the canal bank itself, it being the C&RT provided landing we were alongside. M

    Wow.... I would strongly suggest that you not do that again! My Mom & Dad have a boat in the Puget Sound and I don't remember what happened, but Dad could no take the boat in, so Mom had to. After that all the ladies in their yacht club went out and learned how to run the boat if something happened to the skipper. You can do it!!! And one of those SPOT Trackers sounds like a great idea! Take care and remember it can take a while until you are back to normal, what ever that might be ;)

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  7 лет назад +1

      +Meg Callea Jo does know how to pilot the boat, she just needs more confidence with it. At the end of the day it's not as hard as a ocean-going boat, as there's almost always land within a good rope throw. But yeah, giving it time to heal. Will consider a SPOT ... had one once, but turned out they're dead useless in India, which was the main place I was then wandering about. M

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  7 лет назад +1

      +John Rice Yeah, it was a pretty good hit. If I'd gone a few inches to the side it would have been into an iron bollard, and that could easily have been fatal. +John Rice No worries. I make light of anything I survive, and this is one of the more minor and mundane of incidents, in terms of could-have-been-fatal.
