The Applesauce music video from Animal collective is awesome, how it always changing and almost leaving a print on the movements of the mango girl, nice work of Gaspar Noé. Also some friends and i made some time ago a music video with just two backgrounds, its "Amateur - cuarto seis" (this one using two cloths for background) if you wanna see it and leave your opinion :)
Using a light gray background is also a good way to get further saturation from the colored light. Meet The Gaffer #190... note about gray is in the post roll at the very end. We used Skypanels, but Nova’s would have worked great as well, they just weren’t out yet:)
By far the best video out there on how to achieve this look. It's almost impossible to tell the difference between the RGB and colored paper. Well done!
Excellent (and subtle) statement here I hope many don't miss who do green screen work - keeping the lighting of the green screen and the talent separate. :)
I feel like Khalid's 'Talk' music video has great use of coloured backgrounds in conjunction with a separated box-like set to convey how couples can be in different mindsets and all they need to do is talk to each other to be in "the same coloured room". I could just be overthinking it though...
Amazing video! I want to use this technique to make work-out videos. My inspiration is the COLORS show. Any idea how I get such colors on both the background and the floor?
It would be hard to create the separation between subject and background on the floor if using lighting. You may try adding a large colored mat on the floor and light the background only with rgb. You'll see separation but it might look cool with a complimentary color.
what we have been thinking for such a long time is, the "COLORS" show, do they use green key to change the colors, do they light it up with RGB or do they use color background?
When you say "colored background" in the 3 setups starting at 3:04 is that white light with a colored seamless, or colored light on a background other than white?
Nice Video for very still subject although please provide a solution to a moving subject such as a model in fashion photography shoot as models need move within the seamless paper width ... with minimum shades possible if necessary... Us photographers need to adapt to various RGB lights, Continuous Lights as well as Tubes in very modern fashion photography . Appreciate your comprehensive videos as well
Someone else rightfully pointed out Hotline Bling, so I'll throw the fabulous Hype Williams-directed "Gold Digger" by Kanye West. Along with some great framing and typography, there's lots of great colored backgrounds featured there.
I hate say it, but 69 used it in his last video. The colors were actually the best part of the video, lol. If I could win an M9, I will make a video with it! promise!
Changing the color temperature would slightly change the color of the background light, but I prefer to stay close to 5600 and match my lights to that. Either with color temperature, with the key light, or by eye with the background lights.
Well, this video sure is a great example of lit background use :p Otherwise, Hostage by Billie Eilish sure uses light to bring more emotions to the clip, even tho it's also used as an overall lighting... :p
A green screen could work if you wanted to key it out and replace it with a color background. Some youtube channels do that. The thing is it takes more time in post production keying out the green screen nicely.
I'm sure you could do this with MCs, but we didn't test that out! And you might be able to work with a black background, but I find using a white background with low light output works really well.
“Hi Guys, for today’s video you need a studio level gear and $50,000 to reach a backdrop that literally every RUclipsr is achieving without any of these” No thanks!
Loved it! Those cutters do wonders. Also, this video by Montana of 300 has some lighting techniques you mentioned in this video: ruclips.net/video/MOQPlJ95AKc/видео.html
What's a video with great use of colored backgrounds? Comment below for a chance to win an Aputure M9!
IDGAF by Dua Lipa does that very well
No devotion permanent sunlight is a great video that uses a colored backdrops, I know it’s more projection art but it still fits really really well
Cliche perhaps, but "Hotline Bling" is a classic great use case

Hypothetical question. If you left the background white could you change it to any colour you want in post?
4-minute videos are perfect for those of us with short attention spans who still want good content.
Amazed you went the extra mile and compared the RGB lights to multiple rolls of seamless paper! Well done.
Thank you! It was something we were really curious about ourselves!
Matt's hair is like my Amazon wish list each time one of these episodes comes out. It gets longer and longer!
We must have similar wishlists
I actually like the look of most of the colored lights over the colored backdrops
The lit background is even better than the colored ones

That's a good idea we didn't think of, makes a lot of sense thought! Thanks for the gray't tip ;)

Exactly! Something I learned the hard way
Drakes "Hotline Bing" is legendary in the way that they used RBG lighting and a white set
Kid Cudi - frequency is probably my favorite example of this. Keep up the good vids!

Awesome Video! Was trying to figure out when i did something something similar why my colors wasn't popping on camera compared to the natural eye
Great info helps so much for my up coming documentary shoot!
Tobi Lou - Hot Tub dream machine is a cool example, specially the striped transitions they used..
Think you could pull this off with ONE Nova 300 for the background light? Maybe mounted about or below with a modifier?
🔥🔥! Great info in 4min
Thanks for the feedback!
Hotline Bling made use of this lots i think!

Beyonce's Countdown video. Some nice colors and some nice editing as well.
What camera settings do you go for when doing something like this? I'm using a BMPCC 6k Pro.
I preordered a Nova back in May and was wondering when will they start shipping?
🙏🏽 always look forward to these tips .
Thanks for the feedback!
@@aputurelighting You're Welcome !! Keep up the awesome content.
hey:)can i obtain same or similar effect with color lights using simply white walls in room pls:)?
Light over backdrop. Especially if you have built in lighting effects.
what we have been thinking for such a long time is, the "COLORS" show, do they use green key to change the colors, do they light it up with RGB or do they use color background?
Green screen, its a virtual set
Is grey or white background best for lighting with RGB?
I do this with a grey background. But before I have the nova I do it with the lightpanels.
Tobi Lou - Hot Tub Dream machine uses colored backgrounds in a really interesting way
Can you please make a video on how we can make our white paper background colourful with RGB strip lights?
When you say "colored background" in the 3 setups starting at 3:04 is that white light with a colored seamless, or colored light on a background other than white?
"Colored background" is with the colored seamless, being compared to a white seamless background being hit by colored light.
Very nice educational video 👍. Kindly make more videos on LED constant lights for portrait photography with camera settings must have.... Thank you.
Thanks for feedback we'll keep that in mind!

would 2 x nova 300s without any softbox light a 4.5m white backdrop in rgb mode and have it look like it's a colored paper backdrop?
Would be nice if we could pull this off with novas...if they ever showed up...
Lonely Islands YOLO
Where do you get the cutters at
I hate say it, but 69 used it in his last video. The colors were actually the best part of the video, lol. If I could win an M9, I will make a video with it! promise!
*Aputure* Good content
You said your keylight was set to 5600. Your camera WB was also 5600. Would you ever change your WB to affect your background light?
Changing the color temperature would slightly change the color of the background light, but I prefer to stay close to 5600 and match my lights to that. Either with color temperature, with the key light, or by eye with the background lights.
awesome! can u plzzz make a video on how to light a night-club scene?
"what's a great use of a video with a colored background?"
glares at the entire "COLORS" channel
Well, this video sure is a great example of lit background use :p
Otherwise, Hostage by Billie Eilish sure uses light to bring more emotions to the clip, even tho it's also used as an overall lighting... :p
Good
what are the cutters made of ?
Hey! These cutters are thin foam boards we have that are black on one side and white on the other. And then we cut them to fit the size we need.
Aputure- do you have 3K worth of our products and a full day at a professional studio? If so most of all our videos are for you lol
Would a green screen more versatile?
A green screen could work if you wanted to key it out and replace it with a color background. Some youtube channels do that. The thing is it takes more time in post production keying out the green screen nicely.
Two things...1 do this with two Apurture MC' and I'll believe. 2 I thought you had to use an all black background to do this!
I'm sure you could do this with MCs, but we didn't test that out! And you might be able to work with a black background, but I find using a white background with low light output works really well.
Royal Blood's lights out song
👉🏻Any one of *my videos* is a great use of *RGB* for the background! I know its a bit of a shameless plug but it fits the question 😊
“Hi Guys, for today’s video you need a studio level gear and $50,000 to reach a backdrop that literally every RUclipsr is achieving without any of these”

Wow. This is a dilemma. To spend over 7000 USD in lights or to buy a cheap paper seamless. I really don't know what route to take...
Loved it! Those cutters do wonders. Also, this video by Montana of 300 has some lighting techniques you mentioned in this video: ruclips.net/video/MOQPlJ95AKc/видео.html
One of the best uses that I've seen is Craig David's music video for the song titled Magic: ruclips.net/video/jgQm-7Bmx0c/видео.html
