How to disassemble and maintain the Spyderco Manix 2 Pocketknife

- The Manix 2 is a great knife, with a not-so-great disassembly process. But we get through it. Together.
Also, note that Spyderco has now changed their warranty policy so that disassembly is A-OK and Red-Loctite is banished. For more information: • Spyderco just fixed th... Хобби
This video is an antique, one of the oldest in my backlog. The warranty now does allow disassembly, hooray!
As of when?
They allow disassembly?

@@sergiotheg13 ok, I did.
Just bought a Manix2 XL...this video took a lot of the "scare" out of my first disassembly- thank you!!!
I disassembled my Manix 2 the other day. I first removed the front side, cleaned everything and lubed the pivot washers and put it back together. Next, I did the same with the back side. Once everything was in place, that's when I adjusted the tightness of the pivot screws. I tightened them until they would no longer turn and then back out both sides equally in small increments. I didn't want to mess with the lock. Did the same with my XL the following day.
It may have been an antique when you posted it....which makes it ancient today....but it will live on for those of us who just purchased a Manix 2, even today. Doesn't look simple, but I will "know the way" when the time comes. Thanks!
I picked up a second hand manix 2...really stick opening...and extremely strong spring tension. Thanks to your video I opened that bad boy up ...cleaned it up, oiled it,polished the brass washers and BAM...just like new. Thanks again for your awesome videos.
Nick you sir are a gentleman and a scholar of knives, your mini griptilian disassembly video saved my ass after I took it completely apart and trying for days to put it back together, I haven’t taken apart as many knives as you my good sir but I have taken 20-25 different knives apart several times and the axis lock through me for a loop haha next time I take a benchmade apart I will do your trick of only removing the blade unless there is an issue that warrants a complete disassembly. And you have a great rest of your day. -Kyle
I just ordered a titanium cage for my M2 XL so this guide here is just great. Keep up the good work Mr Shabazz
Enjoy your sense of humor and clear presenting style. I'm a recent Spyderco Manix 2 owner and I am well impressed with its design and how it feels in the hand. Subbed. Many thanks for sharing. All the best from Scotland. Garry
Thanks for the video. One of my manix 2's has been a bit off center and it was bugging me. Disassembling and cleaning fixed it. Keep up the great work!
As always, these maintenance videos are so helpful. I decided on another Spyderco just because of how cumbersome re-assembling the ball bearing lock looks.
It's truly not that bad of a knife to disassemble
I'd imagine Nick having to focus on recording it made it more difficult for him
@@jakass it’s one of the easier locking mechanisms to reassemble. The only spring tension is that tiny ball bearing spring. Lock backs and other locks with heavy spring tension are sketchier to reassemble (looking at you, Pacific Salt H1)
Thanks for doing these disassembly videos Nick, helps ease some anxiety about the unknowns. Compared to a bugout disassembly this seems harmless.
‘Are you too good for your home’? Great review, Nick!
Thank you for this video. I came here because I tried it by myself and found out I needed this. Cheers!
Your Manix 2 disassembly video showed me how the lock works and where to oil the BALL BEARING. Thanks.
Finally picked me up a Manix 2 in S110V w the purple g10 scales. So far im loving this knife ! That being said, I've become somewhat spoiled with drop shutty button lock knives and think the action on this could be slightly massaged to achieve true "drop shut" stutus.
So,I've decided to install this Si3N4 ceramic bearing and lighter spring kit i found recommended on another video.
While im at it, I'll be installing Flytanium screws and ball cage in the gold colored finish.
Had to go over your disassembly video again just to make sure i do it right.
Love your knife videos Nick !
They drop shut even without upgrades usually if you give them a thorough cleaning and then apply a small amount of a light oil like hoppe’s 9 to the pivot washers and the tang where the ball rides. You especially don’t need much on the tang. It’ll break in over time. Also make sure the body and pivot screws aren’t overtightened. The body only needs to be just snug, I usually use just my thumb and forefinger on the screwdriver to not overdo it. For the pivot, I take the torx bit out of the driver and tighten it with just my fingers and that’s plenty tight. If all this fails, you can lightly sand your washers flatter with a very high grit sand paper or sharpening stone, but I’ve never had to do this.
Due to the nature of the ball bearing lock, one you pull it out of the way the blade should be swinging freely, it doesn’t maintain contact with the tang like most lock designs (like the detent on a liner/frame lock for example). All my Manixs are drop shut guillotines. I just got a 15v used and it wasn’t dropping shut, I did what I said and now it’s smooth as glass. I also threw it in AWT linerless scales anyway because it drops it down to nearly the weight of my LW Manix and makes the action even smoother. It does make the grip smaller and there’s less jimping without all the liner jimping, but honesty it’s contoured and chamfered so well you don’t need it.
I’ve never needed the lighter spring, I think they’re too light. Also, I’ve seen the ceramic start to indent/dimple and deform the steel it wears against because it’s harder than the steel. Probably not a problem unless you’re whipping it open full force every day or doing really heavy work stressing the lock, but just something to consider.
Good luck on the Manix!
Forgot to mention one of the Manixs I own is also the one you bought and it’s a great one! It’s impossible to make it rust and it’s nice not to worry about it. Takes a lot of patience to sharpen though lol
I have the XL version of this. Nick would probably call it "really freakin' huge!"
Walter W I have the xl as well, Nick would also refer to it as "murdery". I enjoy murdery knives. But I did just get the sprint run Manix 2 with black dlc blade, s90v, and burl handles. Beautiful. Not quite as murdery but fits my hand perfectly. It's become my second favorite spyderco, right behind the Shaman.
Did you guys find that of the two pivot screws, one came out pretty easily and had blue LocTite on it, and the other didn’t want to move?
I’m at the point of trying to decide what to do about the pivot screw that doesn’t want to come out. I almost did strip it, because I was using a T9 at first when it’s supposed to be a T10.
Someone said to use a heat gun (I don’t have a soldering iron), but I’m concerned about what that might do to the plastic cage for the ball bearing, even if I try to aim the heat not directly onto it. (I guess I can use something to block it ...)
@@peacefuljeffrey I got a manix 2 g10 last week and the clip side pivot screw wouldn't budge. Spyderco assured me they haven't used red loctite since sometime in 2016. I hit it with a hair dryer and applied some serious torque and it finally came loose. There were no thread locker of any kind on the screw. I use a wiha stubby torx driver which allows you to get more torque than a longer driver. If all else fails, you can send it back to spyderco.
@@abc456f I remember him saying that the Para 3 is “less murdery” looking than the PM2. I think the Manix 2 is the next Spyderco on my list. I would eventually like to get the Shaman too.
Your disassembly videos are 2nd to none...
This is great seeing inside . Without losing a bunch of parts .
The design looks very strong ! I have the resilience but I don't like putting my finger in the guillotine to close it ! I like that size with a safer lock . Maybe the manix 2 xl ? A!
Cool vid ! Like having a manual for each knife !
Glad I saw this video just made a trade for a Manix S110V G10 scales. Not that I will ever take it apart. But seeing it's internal parts. Very good information.
LOL, I just took mine apart and added some titanium scales. It was a bit of a pain, but the knife runs even smoother, and looks amazing.
Disassembled mine and broke the freaking ball cage. It was just a clear plastic thingy. I ordered a flytanium copper cage lock and am waiting on it to get here before jthe toiletpaperpocalypse gets into full swing. I took it apart to do some customizing which turned out badass. Love this knife even more NOW.
Thanks for the video, it really, really helped me put in the flytanium titanium cage bearing lock. You are a brilliant man! It took dis dumba.. 2.5 hours to get it done. Tks again sir.
Im thinking of buying a ball cage too. What metal did you get?
@@sergiotheg13 I got the titanium from flytanium. Real pain to put it, but after putting it in I am extremely happy! Nick's video is the best of the three out there I found. If I had watched his video first i think i could have done it in an hour. I have no stick or extra sound with mine that others have talked about. Luck of the draw.
This is a situation where ceramic bearings make a significant difference. I think is sent a couple of bearings that fit this knife when I sent the ones for the 0452.
Very cool video,thank's bro!
I'm about to use this guide to disassemble my Pickle [sic]. Wish me luck - there are not a lot of vids for Sydercos using the "axis-lock" type mechanism. The P'kal, Manix, and not many others.
Apparently a much older video you just got around to posting. My Manix 2 didn't have any Loctite.
Lol. This is an antique, for sure.
Phenomenal showcase
been waiting for this one. the ball bearing on these don't seem to spin freely. on mine all the bearing does is slide against the knife. I was worried my bearing is worn out but the action performance seems the same as this video.
"" After careful consideration, we have decided to change our internal practices effective immediately to use medium-strength Loctite in the assembly of all our US-made knives. ""
So my manix 2 XL makes a scraping sound against the ball bearing? Should I consider decreasing the tightness of the spring or is there something I'm not cleaning?
You stated how I approach every day...get things done, try not to look like an idiot. My success rate is roughly 7.1625%. I hope in 2018 I can hit 10%.
Hey Nick! I just bought myself another manix 2 that was not as smooth as my first, it has what I think you refer to as "being sticky" and I heard about adjusting the pivot, now, how does one do this?
Now I wonder which knives, beside Homefront, are the best to start learning disassemble routine.
Thank you Nick. I will learn from your 'poor decision' and not disassemble my Manix 2. Spyderco can do that for me if it ever needs it lol.
Nick are you stuck uploading older videos because you are tied down by the z hunter? Haha
the z hunter is a dark dark black hole that he may never return from.
Caleb Turner I think he's starting to realize it's pointless to review newer knives after being confronted with the greatness of the Z Hunter for an entire week.
I know this is old, but there's always more information : )
Couldn't you take the scale off of one side, put the new scale on, flip sides take the old scale off, put the new one on and be done? Do you have to mess with the lock or could you avoid doing that?
Would this knife work if there was a missing ball? Im asking because I just got it and its real stiff, thanks so much!
You took it apart kinda weird, i do one side at a time ☺ that way i dont got parts falling out and risk losing the ball bearing after it falls on the floor and rolls into another universe... (Has happened before)
Danny boi , LOL
I have one of the early manix2's, it's a 154cm hollow ground blade, and it doesn't have the peened-on scale... it rattles all the time because of that.
What's up with the autos
I have 1 and 2... I'd like to hear your thoughts and maybe see a disassembly video
Stabil!
Thats odd, my new manix 2 is skeletonized pretty heavily on the liners. Mines the carbon fiber spring run?
So is my s110v blurple Manix 2. Only certain models have the machined out liners. Slightly lighter but with more places to collect dust.
Whish i had a quata for every " little guy reference" lol
I just bought a manix 2 lightweight, but I realized too late that it is pinned shut. Is it worth returning and getting a normal manix?
Nick blah Shit yeah. Pinned knives SUCK. You’re stuck with whatever tightness or looseness they have, and you’re unable to disassemble them to service them. What if you dropped it into a puddle? You’d want to clean the hell out of it - but you couldn’t.
Which knife Do I buy? Sage 5 LW or Native 5 LW?
I have made the mistake of disassembling one of my Manix 2's and I'll never do it again.
It's easier than any benchmade 😂😂
Since the newer Manix 2 Lightweight versions are being made with screws the question comes up about after market cages for the regular Manix 2 and if they will fit in the LW versions.
You probably know this by now but the answer is no since the normal and XL manix both use steel liners that are integral to the build and how the bearing lock functions. The lightweight operates a little differently and has different specs. I currently have 2 custom manix, "Lynch NW custom spidy web design on both the blade & custom deep carry titanium clip" and an XL with fly-t scales/titanium cage and Lynch NW custom pocket clip. Last time I looked I couldn't find any lightweight hardware of any kind other than weird scales which is why I've held off getting a lightweight model.
this was very interesting to see, but it makes me think ot barely needs to be done if you have a good needle applicator.
I have been waiting for this one for a while now! Thanks for the video, i did happen to yell at the computer while watching this and got a weird look from my family "PUT THE SPRING IN AFTER THE BLADE IS IN NICK!!!!" but hey I'm Watching this you are doing this XD.
Hey Nick! Tried to disassemble manix 2 lightweight and was not able to get the blade out of the handle. Was it me or one does not simply disassemble the lightweight version?:)))
Isn't it pinned construction?
I learned a lot about my Manix 2XL from this video (even though this is about the 2, not the 2XL), and I like the candidness of your videos.
I noticed slight off-centering on my 2XL, which I’ve never disassembled. I figured I’d free up the pivot, and then re-tighten it to see if I could make a difference with the blade centering.
One of the pivot screws came out and shows signs of blue LocTite. The other screw, I haven’t been able to budge!
I was wondering if perhaps it was one of those D shaped screws and thus was never going to turn, and that’s why I’m here watching your video.
Do you figure they’d use blue LocTite on one side and red on the other? I’m wondering about what approach I should take.
I’m also surprised that this is the first time I’m learning that the lanyard tube on this knife prevents full disassembly. Would that be the case on my 2XL as well?
So in your opinion, is the ball bearing lock as strong or stronger than the pm2 lock. Considering the plastic for the ball bearing to sit in?
I think they’re probably no different for 99% of the world. Both are more than strong enough. And the plastic shouldn’t be under force
I live in dread of the day that the plastic cage breaks, or dry rots and crumbles.
Thats why I desperately want Spyderco to make a Manix 2XL with a TRUE Ball Bearing Lock, not a caged one.
Can you clean it without disassembling it
two things sir.. one] I thought spiderco changed the warranty due to wisemen companys mods and such mods like them.? two] have you done a review on the boker plus Pelican, if so could I get a link; I cant find the video.?
I did not see your comment lol nevermind on one
So much for being able to disassemble your Spyderco and maintain it. I just bought one a week ago and wanted to disassemble it and put some blue loctite in it and it turns out that mine still had red loctite in the pivot. Why would they continue to put red loctite in the pivot if they allow disassembly and maintenance by the owner now?
Hive Mind Speaking of red loctite...I sent in my Benchmade contego in for warranty service, a scale screw became loose and wouldn't retighten. When I got the knife back, the notes said they fixed the screw and then went ahead and red loctited it ALONG with every other screw and pivot.
Thanks a lot Benchmade!
srg914 The more I learn about Benchmade the more I feel that they’re real sons of bitches.
I contacted them to inquire about getting a set of omega springs. They’re like, “Send the knife in.”
Yeah, I want to lose it for untold weeks. And what if they pulled this same red LocTite shit?!
Anyway, I had fibbed and told them that I had broken a spring. I was just trying to get a backup set for IN CASE I DO break a spring. But they’re dicks.
Fran Drescher cameo at 10:21!
I probably won't take mine apart after seeing this. 😳
Mine does have a detent hole tho
A relative bought me this exact knife on a trip to New Mexico.. However, the centering is ATROCIOUS. Should I just send it into spyderco or attempt to reassemble the knife myself..
I have one that is off, but not terrible. debating the same thing...
Kyle M My Manix 2XL is off slightly. It was because I decided to try to fix it that I discovered that one of the pivot screws won’t release that I came here to watch this video, actually. That’s how I learned that they fuckin’ used red LocTite! 😠
What's funny is I just got a manix 2 today and it had no locktite at all =/ so I had to blue locktite all the screws..
Do you work on other folks knifes?
Amen to the red loctite comment!
What is more of a beast? Manix 2 or the PM 2?
Laeveld Paraatheid That's a close call. If you want a beast, get the Manix 2xl. It's a bad boy.
Just ordered one on sale but didnt notice it had rivets..
Hey nick. Between the Manix and the shaman, which do you prefer?
Nick can clarify if he wants, but I believe in another video he said Shaman
Brian Case I vote for the Shaman, the Manix 2 close behind.
I'd pay to hear you say "with and name like smuckers, its gotta be good!"
Is the Manix 2 legal to carry in California? Or is it illegal to carry
Tide Pod legal
Because it's a ball bearing, it can bounce and roll until it falls through your heat vent , which is a direct route into another dimension, never to return (don't bother asking me how I know this, LOL). Disassembling this knife is not for the feint of heart.
This isn't THAT bad.
You had a LOT more trouble with that Benchmade Contego, at least from what I've seen.
I disassembled mine smoothly untill I realized I had no idea where the ball went lol. Then felt stupid when I figured it out
Can you just take a screw out one at a time and put them In
Can you change the color of the g10 scales?
Of course you can get all sorts of replacement scales for the Manix 2.
What about the centering tho
I fully take mine apart all the time, the lanyard tube just needs a little force and after that it pops on and off with ease.
Jimmy Grey really? I was wanting to change the black g10 scales to grey G10.
Yep, it comes off. Don't be afraid to give it a little pressure and it should pop off no worries, it may chew a slight bit of g10 off when you put it back together though.
Would the new scales get chewed up while putting it back in tho
Maybe try buying a new lanyard tube with your new scales. Like a flytitanium lanyard tube. It might be easier to fit together.
Lots of aftermarket parts for the Manix 2. Be careful and the scales will be fine. They're designed to be fitted on so why would they get ruined. Just be careful. Like I said maybe try an aftermarket lanyard tube too as they are probably an easier fit.
i have manix 2 and how do i make it as loose as yours ?
Slack the pivot screw a little bit ...
Thats the spyderco i want the most... Well, the one that i could actually afford anyway
It's really nice and effective ,I got the combo blade half serrated and it's a beast !!
thought spyderco changed there disassembly policy and banished the red lock tight as well never mind just saw your post sorry duh
Witnessing another traumatic aspect of a week of torture under the Z-Hunter. The community is recognizing the unspeakable depths you’re willing to go to for your fellow men! 😢😵😢😭
Now do a LA version!
I thought they said that you COULD disassemble now without violating the warranty?
Slicey Dicey they did it was probably filmed at an earlier date
This was filmed many months ago!
Nick Shabazz Phew!!! When you spread the joy earlier, I immediately tore apart like three of my knives lol. Never attempted the Manix yet and after watching this, probably won’t.
Great video, as always, BTW...
Slicey Dicey From the looks of it, I think reassembling a Benchmade with the axis lock might be a higher degree of difficulty. I've never taken apart my manix 2xl or my newly acquired sprint run manix 2, but I have had the displeasure of taking down and reassembling my benchmade griptilian. A royal pita.
Nick Shabazz+ Well, your arms are too young looking, but your voice makes me think that you look like 'Hank' from the Moose Lodge and arcade from the great movie American Graffiti. The part was played by the late Albert Nalbandian. When I watch your video's -- that's what I figure you look like and it's permanently etched in my mind. Love your reviews Hank ah ah ah I mean Nick.
Fuckin awesome!!!
I am absolutely dying to see the face behind this voice... I used to work in a smoke shop and you sound exactly like one of my old customers and I can't help but to imagine his face when I hear your voice. I think it's going to drive me absolutely insane.
Honestly, it'll be way better if you just decide I'm him.
@@NickShabazz LOLOL I'm not so sure of that. He was definitely an interesting character. THANK YOU for actually replying this is the first time a RUclipsr has actually noticed one of my comments !
I am literally making up an excuse as to why I am an hour late to my wife and sneak off to buy one of these right now LOL
Great reply Nick! I even had my wife read the comment and your reply. Loved it!
Maybe a bit of masking tape as a 3rd hand?
Question? Why take it apart in the first place?
738polarbear Knives often come from the factory with gunk inside. Also, cleaning and oiling can improve the action.
#notabrilliantman lol i think we all could use this hashtag every now and then.
Honestly Doesn’t look too bad
"" “Spyderco’s warranty does not cover damage caused by abuse, misuse, loss, improper handling, alterations, accident, neglect, disassembly, or improper sharpening.” Please note that it specifies “…damage caused by…disassembly.” This aspect of our warranty has been widely misinterpreted to infer that disassembly of a Spyderco knife automatically voids its warranty.
