• MAG 15 In-Depth Review!
Sorry for the re-upload. I fixed the audio so hope it is better ! The MAG 15 is a great laptop and in my time dealing with Eluktronics directly I can't be happier. It is very rare that the CEO of the company shows such pride and commitment to deliver the best laptop that is possible. Updates are coming to make this laptop even better ! Thanks for watching !
OWNorDisown Do these updates just apply to Eluktronics or every OEM Intel collaborated with?
@@miguelgalvez5630 There will be one just for Eluktronics. I am not allowed to say what it is, but it is BIG
OWNorDisown That’s enough for me to opt for Eluktronics over the MAG-15’s Asia counterpart. Thanks! I only support products verified by you, Bob, and Jarrod. Keep up the great work!
Thank you for your enthousiasm/passion that goes into these reviews as always:D!!
@@speedylordinc.3748 cheers mate 😀
Who in their right mind would make a baby carry an Eluktronics MAG-15?
I would
I love the looks of this laptop. It looks like a gaming Thinkpad, like the evolution of Thinkpad designer. Sleek, professional, you could take this to any kind of business meeting.
I totally agree, after the recent updates its even better. I will be doing an update video soon :)
This is such a good company for laptops. I bought the MECH-17 with the full RTX 2070 and ran some benchmarks after some overclocking. In superposition 1080p extreme I get 5135 points. This puts it on par with a desktop GTX 1080 as the top score was 5230~ for the 1080. The entire time the GPU stayed under 70C with auto fan. Much better with max fan. This is exactly the laptop I was looking for!
I agree totally 👍
Man the mech is a beast
Nathan Casey do you have it ?
You deserve more views. Always don't like it when other gaming laptop reviewers won't show MSI afterburner stats in the gaming tests..
Thanks ! Yes, I dont understand why they don't...not as if it's hard to do 👍
It seems like there's no need for the 87C limit for the GPU. Just undervolting the CPU and reducing the clock speed seems to do the same thing. Additionally, it runs cooler.
Yes indeed 👍
Have you looked at FarCry 5 results?
@@sdfasdfvccvvc I'd take lower temps over the extra 8 fps.
Seems like it depends on the game. Still impressive.
In some games like bf5 reducing the wattage seems to do a better job cooling the cpu but it allows for higher clocks. So basically a few more fps. I'd keep the pl1 and pl2 limits at 35 and 45w and all cores turbo limit at 39x
You covered everything I wanted to know. Awesome review Steven. Thank you! Can't wait for your Omen 17t review!
Thanks ! Yes, I have the 17t here. Will do first look soon 😀
@@OWNORDISOWN Sweet!
An underrated note that you made was that the cut out was for the wifi antenna, not many persons have noted/noticed that. Good Job!
Thanks, appreciate it !
One thing that is often overlooked in Tongfang based laptops is the good airflow. Lifting bottom basically doesn't change temps much. Thanks for bringing that up!
Can't wait to try out this chassis personally
Yes, it has great airflow already. Cheers !

genexis_x hey man any updates? Have you ordered the same model ?

Thanks Michael ! I tried to cover most things yet not make it too long...took 8 hours just to edit and then I had to redo the audio. Thanks for watching!
@@OWNORDISOWN yes, it shows that you put a lot of efforts into it!

Thanks, appreciate it !
My friend recently got this and it feels way smaller than you might expect.
It's a 15" how small can it be
@@theviewsx I'm probably over exaggerating how small it is, but it is definitely smaller and lighter than my old Dell i7559 w/960M.
People who order from eluktronics directly are having to wait 1 or two months for their laptops. This is because of the extremely high demand for a lightweight laptop with a large batter such as this one and also because they have a contract with amazon and have to supply them first. If you are going to purchase this laptop and dont need it repasted use amazon as it will arrive faster. You cannot get this repasted with amazon. Another reason for them raising the price is the high demand is creating a shortage of units and eluktronics are struggling to reach supply.
Hopefully this was helpful
The reason for the price increase , according to the CEO, is to help pay for the extra staff they hired on Friday last week. This staff is to help offer Dale's and support service.
They told me yesterday their lead time on their website is October 24th plus 5 days for any repasting.
Great portability n battery. Liquid metal helping CPU cooling. Maybe liquid metal on GPU too would help it remain below 80c.
Unlikely. Heat transfer from CPU to the GPU with liquid metal, in these small and light form factors you cannot beat the physics of getting the heat out of the system, or case.
LM won't benefit GPU cooling much

Thanks, appreciate it ! I worked really hard on this one so felt bad the initial audio sucked. I'm glad it's better now 👍
Great review! After watching Dave2D's review, I felt a bit skeptical. It seemed like he was overhyping the laptop a little bit too much, but you and Bob of All Trades have made things much more clear!
I have narrowed what laptop I am going to buy down to either the Aero 15X, or the MAG-15!
Thanks ! I am sure the MAG is going to get better too. I have a new BIOS to try as well as a new command center and an update to SoundBlaster for the audio so stay tuned. There is also one big update coming from it that will set it apart from all the rest.
Thank you for reviewing this, is a wonderful laptop!
Thanks for watching it 👍
Great review. Thanks for sharing the undervolting techniques and advantages as well! I was wondering if in your professional opinion the 64gb of RAM is worth the upgrade from 32? Thanks!
Thanks ! No, I see no benefit in moving from 32 GB RAM for most people.
Great overview, thank you 😊
Do you think 2070 justifies the $300 price increase over 1660ti?
Placed my order yesterday! Hyped to get it!
Yay! I'm going to do an update video next week detailing effects of the recent updates
Greg Jarman let me know how it goes when you get it. Really thinking about this laptop for everyday use
@@avxrevo its a really, really good laptop, the only confusing thing is the weird windows estimated battery life results I get, one day doing just normal browsing with a bit a of video thrown in, it'll say I'll get around 7-9 hours of battery life, and the next doing the same stuff It'll say im gonna get 2-4. granted I don't think the 2-4 is accurate cause it consistently increases over that time to stay the same during that time period. but its weird as I've had other laptops that don't exibit this behavior.
@@avxrevo Things have taken a turn. while I still really like the laptop when it works, im having some weird software issues, im in talk with Eluktronics support team to see what we can figure out on getting those resolved.

I wish other TongFang resellers (every reseller credit themselves to have colaborated with Intel, but i think it was TongFang, correct me if i am wrong) could apply a similar solution to eluktroboost. It is such an amazing feature.
I thought xmg was saying they had something like it. Idk I'm not sure. But what does eluktroboost actually do?
This Eluktroboost was supposed to increase the GPU from 80w to 90w but mine only went to about 83w. The Mech series uses a completely different process and is superior.
XMG uses something similar to Eluktroboost. They call it Overboost. I have no idea how much they boost the GPU.
@@emrandelowar9061 The feature is built into the ODM design and is by no means exclusive to Eluktronics. We have it and promote it in XMG NEO series with Overboost and it's also present in XMG FUSION, but we don't emphasize it too hard due to relatively low GPU Temp Target ceilings. // Tom
Just wanted to add that Intel collaborated with SEVERAL “smaller” OEM’s, and that this laptop will be available under a few different brands. In Europe Schenker is putting out the Fusion 15 and in the US Maingear is selling the Element. As far as I’m aware, these are all the same laptop, although quality may vary between makers.
At this time Eluktronics does not ship outside of the US (although their products are still sold outside the US via third party vendors) and according to their website Eluktronics does NOT offer support outside of the US either, so buyer beware.
For those living outside of the US, Maingear and Schneker may be better options, and I’m sure there may be others soon.
They will offer technical support to overseas buyers but if they want to return it the buyer has to pay for the shipping back...they do offer shipping overseas. Their website seemed screwy yesterday so I asked them to take a look.
Eluktronics will be issuing some updates and one in particular will ONLY be for Eluktronics .
OWNorDisown
Taken from Eluktronics website:
“Shipping Policy:
Eluktronics Inc. offers shipping to the 50 U.S. States only. Standard shipping is provided via UPS Ground. PO Boxes, Alaska & Hawaii shipments will have additional fees assessed as they require delivery via USPS Priority. The products we sell are intended for sale and distribution within the United States only. Eluktronics Inc. can only warrant products located in the USA.
IMPORTANT: Products which are exported or are shipped outside the USA will NOT receive any support. Many brand PC's have their own designated purchasing channel for the respected item. Reasons include loss or damage during cargo or freight forwarding or possible defect upon arrival. Additionally, replacement parts are specific to each country. “
I got this from Eluktronics “About Us” page:
www.eluktronics.com/shipping-returns/
So, if this information is incorrect, then Eluktronics should update their website immediately before other potential customers read this and pass them by.
OWNorDisown
On a side note, I tried placing an order with Eluktronics to see what would happen. It seems than Eluktronics order processing will take my request, even doing it in CDN currency, so I guess Eluktronics might ship internationally. But as I mentioned earlier, their shipping policy says otherwise. Eluktronics need to straighten that out - confusing potential customers is not a good thing.

I like the laptop except the sound. It’s short and tinny, so I used an equalizer app to help out but still not that great
Yes, the speakers are not great. I tried waxes NX and that made no difference.
Folks wouldn't mind spending around 30$ more to get good quality speakers if available. How is the sound card tho? Audio using headphones sound good? Gaming shouldn't be an issue but poor music audio would be a deal breaker for me. I think ausus offers a dedicated DAC for audio processing in their zephyrus line of laptops, that sounds promising and reviews say the speakers are very decent. I just dont like their battery life, the gx502 has a 76wh battery but they barely last 4 hours. I've read asus laptops have a hard time switching off the dGPU, they usually have the dgpu pulling 10-15 watts all the time.

New subscriber here, great channel and great work! In the process of deciding to purchase the Mag 15 2070 or Razer Blade Advanced 15 2070 for gaming primarily. Screen is VERY important to me and not really concerned with battery life. Is the Mag 15 the better buy from a quality perspective (build, screen etc..) or Razer, despite the premium, a better buy? Not sure I want to fiddle with settings etc...
I have had no issue with the screen at all, I think that is very good. The only negative on the build I have encountered since my review is there is a small strip on the sides, above the plastic cut outs for the wifi antenna . Mine, on the right is peeling away - its basically a plastic strip about 8mm wide and 1.25" long and is glued in place. Obviously my adhesive is coming away, it can be glued back in place I am sure.
OWNorDisown Thank you for the speedy reply... was ready to order via amazon but sold out already haha
Yeah, they told me they had like 175 orders to fill for Amazon. Keep checking I guess. I am sure you will like it :)
For anyone wants to get this laptop, here is just a rumored background story I dig out from Chinese website. The laptop is designed by TongFang, who initially plan to sell the barebone in China but realised the spec of the chassis will just cannibalize their existing offerings (Mech-15 or so called TongFong GK5CN5Z). So they sold the chassis to resellers outside China (XMG, Eluktronics), of course, the resellers then have to chip in their desgin suggustions. Based on TongFang's track record with their previous offerings, this should offer very similar performance to Mech 15. And Steven's review here actually proves that.
There will be more resellers coming up with the same chassis, just need a bit patience.

Steven, do you recommend a liquid metal upgrade on cpu. Since it can corrode copper heat sink in long run. Is it suited on the Mag 15?
The guys over at Hidevolution told me that it should last as long as regular paste. The Razer blade 15 can be configured with 64 GB of ram, even c an be overclocked, you should correct that.
Not on their USA website you can't. Max is 16 GB. Sure, you can do it via a system builder like Hidevolution or do it yourself but that's not the point. Razer doesn't offer it as an option directly.
Hi there quick question. All of your benchmarks are taking into account your edited voltage curve in MSI afterburner right?
My charts show three MAG 15 segments. a) With the GPU 87 degree cap removed, b) the CPU pegged at 3400 Mhz and c) at stock with max performance set.
Just a heads up, It seems intel just released a new bios version BIOS 0056 with the following change log:
Fixed Accidental Wake-up Event from Sleep/Standby (S3) (!)
Improved compatibility with USB-C/DP Adapters during Reboot and Cold Boot
Improved compatibility with Thunderbolt Docking stations (new Thunderbolt Firmware and Driver will be supplied shortly)
So it seems intel might have fixed the thunderbolt 3 issues with eGPUs and you might be able to get more performance out of that 2080 you have.

@@OWNORDISOWN thanks alot for the quick reply. I might also ask: what would be the performance difference between 1660ti and the 2070mq? It is a 400 $ upgrade (canada) and I dont know if it is worth it.
@@rireauxabois it should be around 15 to 20% . I don't think $400 extra is worth it to be honest.
@@OWNORDISOWN thank you very much sir!
Would you recommend this for photo editing, video editing and some gaming? Tks
Yes, definitely. Good screen, SD card reader, solid CPU performance. With the updates it's even better . Here is a video update:

New BIOS coming too...
Does anyone know if this laptop’s battery is compatible with the overpowered 15+? Thanks!
Do you know why Intel/Eluktronics didn't opt for the more efficient thermal pastes, like Thernal Grizzly Kryonaut? I'm guessing they want to experiment with lesser tier pastes at the moment.
Excerpt from our FAQ: Intel is already using high-performance thermal compounds from established, international manufacturers. These products are used in the industrial sector, so they have no publicly known brand name. Nevertheless, their high thermal conductivity and guaranteed durability provide optimal and long-lasting cooling of your high-performance laptop. The thermal compounds are applied and sealed automatically by the vendor of the thermal components. They are applied in a highly controlled, standardized manner and provide the best balance of thermal performance, production tolerance and product lifetime.
Due to popular demand, we offer Repasting to Kryonaut. Depending on the system and chip selection (binning) under optimal conditions, selecting this option could result in an improvement of the temperatures under load of a few °C. However, an improvement in the cooling performance can not be guaranteed. We therefore ask for your understanding that we do not communicate any specific temperature ranges at.
The price results from the extra complexity of disassembling the cooling system, the residue-free removal of the original thermal compound, additional quality controls and the material costs. This upgrade is only carried out by the most experienced and certified members of our staff. The upgrade is applied to both CPU and GPU.
For reasons of safety and risk of failure, we ask for your understanding that we do not offer any metal or diamond-based thermal pastes at this time. // Tom
Hey! I'm a film student and I live in the foreign, so I really need a good laptop that I can game with, will you recommend this with the 2070 max q for $1899 on Amazon or the Razer Blade white mercury with the 2070 max q as well, but with an IPS 240hz display? Which one would you recommend and why?
I need something made with good materials so it leasts some years, and also I want a thin looking gaming laptop, not very gaming looking in my taste, I was thinking of the Aero 15 as well, and the Rog scar III, but those look very gaming :/
There is a huge price difference between the two . The Razer is $2649.
I would definitely go for the MAG 15, the savings will buy you a 240 Hz monitor and probably an SSD as well.
Also there are some great updates coming out for the MAG 15.
The only area its weaker on is its speakers.
Kobke 240hz is probaly overkill. no way you'll fully utilize it vs. 144hz display
referring to 8:02 @OWNorDisown please can you tell me a good laptop that i can actually put on my lap or what laptop has the best thermals. this would be a great video idea too.
The Asus ROG Strix GL531GU comes to mind ruclips.net/video/eZj8dsJBnRI/видео.html
@@OWNORDISOWN thank you so much
WHich software do you use to benchmark? the one that overlays the game with colored text giving Speed, temps, Throttling factor? Thanks.
I use MSI Afterburner
Hello
Is this better than other 2070 machines like the triton 500 or the Zephyrus GX701?
I would say so, the GX701 is a 17" so that is a different form factor altogether. If you want the best portability, great build , solid performance at a fair price then this is it. New updates have solved the 645mhz limit on balance mode and the audio is now totally fixed. I'm going to do an update video
Hi! The aero 15 with the same specs is 200 usd less than this one, do you think the smaller dimensions and lighter weight worth the extra 200?
$200 is quite a bit. With same specs probably not, that can buy you another SSD. Same price I would go with the MAG
got my mag 15 in the mail today (loving it so far!) but I have a quick, possibly stupid question: is it possible to have the gpu run at full power while on battery, most games I play when on battery run at around 30 fps. Never had a gaming laptop before so i dunno if this is normal or not.
GPU are throttled on battery. Otherwise your battery would be empty in no time
@@sohn7767 thats kind of what I figured, makes sense
Your external display showed 30hz through hdmi? Is that the display limit or some issue with the laptop?
I have a 240hz external display so hoping to connect that with full functionality to this thing
It was just the cable I was using. I can connect to my 3840 x 1600 75 hz monitor and it runs at 75 hz and get 110 fps in Rainbow Six siege at Ultra . This is using a hi speed HDMI cable or via dP using an adapter.
How's the screen wobble? I checked out the MSI gs65 at a big box store and it was way too wobbley for lazy couch/bed/chest browsing. In contrast the razerblade 15 and asus ROG Zephyrus M GU502 had no screen wobble-- as solid as a macbook air.
Its perfectly fine. Its not like it's a touch screen and it doesnt wobble all over the place when you move it about.
@@OWNORDISOWN Thanks for the quick reply. It's on the top of my list now! Also thanks for dedicating your time to amazing reviews.
I bought it because of its hardware price and build quality.it checked all my box requirement
Levyn KHS how do you like it so far mate?
@@seboskater really good, smooth, fast and its beautiful.if you want to buy it go for it cuz for the price they are giving you everything.i have a cousin who bought a laptop which cost 2100 and what he got is small battry,120 hz display, limited amount of ports, chin cam and no sd card.
Can you do an updated review of how it performs now? I'm looking into getting it because the alternative version I was gonna get from Whitebook went up to $1300 from $770 and then out of stock so I don't trust them anymore cause that seems sketch.
Yeah, that sounds a bit dodgy. I don't have it any more . It was a review unit...
@@OWNORDISOWN that's alright, I'm pretty sure it'll do fine I just wanted to see if buying it from eluktronics as a barebone would be worth it since I'd have to buy ram and storage and stuff
@@NovaCaine2489 At least that way you can choose what RAM and drive you put in. ELUKTRONICS tend to put the cheaper ones in.
@@OWNORDISOWN fair enough, plus I get a mouse, headphones, and mousepad, and 10 foot hdmi cable included so I think that makes up for the extra cost
You mention that the P660 is good as long as you do not fill it up. Could you explain why that is?
www.tomshardware.com/reviews/intel-ssd-660p-qlc-nvme,5719-3.html
"For over two minutes of writing, Intel’s SSD 660p wrote over 275GB of data at a rate of 1.8 GBps. After that, the SSD’s write performance fell significantly, down to just 175 MBps on average. This gives the Intel SSD 660p great performance in applications that need high-speed write speeds as well as good performance when moving around most modest-sized files and folders. However, if you are writing well over 200GB of data to the SSD at once, write times can extend beyond that of the SATA based Samsung 860 EVO"
@@OWNORDISOWN thanks for your reply! Ah I see you mean as long as you don't fill it up at once. That's all good, I can hardly imagine someone moving 200gb + at once and it certainly isn't in my work flow
Should I buy this or Y740/540? Apart from the MAG-15 being lighter, smaller and thinner and having longer battery life, I can't see much difference.
My next video is a comparison between the Y740 and Y540, plus benchmark numbers between the MAG 15 and Y740, at stock and overclocked.
The MAG is the better performer in games, equal to the 740 in CPU work.
The Y740 has the benefit of a slightly higher colour gamut 99% with its 500 bit display and Gsync. The latter being the main benefit in my opinion.
If you dont care about the bmeztra battery life or more portability the Y740 is a great option.
@@OWNORDISOWN Thanks!!!
Would be perfect if it wasn't Max Q. I had to go with a Clevo.
I'm going to do a comparison against my 2080 MQ and I think it will be pretty close. A 2080MQ is on par with a 115w 2070..should be interesting!
Did your system have the Intel Optane Memory option? This option is a bit confusing. It is only 16GB it looks to take up the 2nd NVMe slot? What is the real world benefit?
No, mine just had the 2TB Intel 660p NVME SSD. The second slot was empty. Personally I see no point of Optane memory. Even paired with a 5400 rpm hard drive I saw no real benefit, it was still slow. In this case you might as well have an SSD. It's because it was designed by Intel and they believe in it for some reason.
@@OWNORDISOWN Thanks

What would be the best option
I actually did a video comparing this

Can you help me with specification of power adapter. What watts, amperes, voltage, all technical info thank you

'Support team' or 'taking advantage of a sudden increase in demand'? Being a realist/cynic I'm going with the latter. A similar thing happened with some light strips that someone else reviewed. He gave them a 'thumbs up', demand shot up, and as a result the company increased the price by a huge amount. 😠
I dont believe that is the case, I can see it perhaps when a bespoke update comes from them but in the meantime Maingear makes one as do other manufacturers.
They told me they hired more people on Friday to help support the demand.
It is still cheaper than the Razer by some margin...
How is the mag matching the y740 with a 75° thermal limit? Is eluktroboost making up for that difference?
In my tests the max performance/max fan option always had a slight benefit over the gaming/eluktoboost , even with the 87 degree limit in place.
I have a new control center to use now so will test that. As you saw, with the 75 deg limit in place and no tweaks the Y740 at stock beats it, but this is reversed with the tweaks.
@@OWNORDISOWN Yeah it's less than 5% difference and in R6 it beats it
Hey, i was wondering How do i check that Eluktroboost is working properly on the Mag 15?
Can i run a stress test and check hwinfo if the gpu goes above 80 watts?
You have to use a Kilowatt meter that plugs into the wall and shows the watts being pulled

How good is the keyboard as compared to lets say a thinkpad extreme?
I've not used that model but compared to some of the older thinkpads I have tried I would say the distance of travel isnt as far but felt good to me . Mechanical keyboard makes for good tactile feedback and the keybase is very solid.

Please excuse my NOOB-ness. I have this ordered and enroute to me. I am very interested in doing the underclocking you mentioned to 3400 but i have no idea how to even begin to do that. Please please point me in the right direction, is that the same as undervolting?
You need to install Throttlestop from Techpowerup. If you Google it you will find it.
Save the download, then extract it. What I do them is drag the application to the task bar for easy access.
Open it up.
First screen change Speedshift EPP to 1 and disable BDPROCHOT. On the FIVR tab change multipliers to 34, apply an offset undervolt to the core and cache and check for stability. If stable save voltages immediately. TPL tan increase turbo time limit to 96.
Save profile on front page and turn on.
You will be good to go.
