  • 1 in every 4 Kenyan’s has or will suffer from a mental disorder in their lifetime.
In 2016 David was that one in those four. Once he summoned the courage to see a psychiatrist, he was diagnosed with mild clinical depression. David shares his experience of what depression looks like, what it takes out of you and what it feels like. This is a story of facing your demons and slaying them. It is a story of courage, hope and encouragement. Depression is real. Expose it, name it, shame it. You can overcome it.

This is one of the best engage talks I have ever viewed. David, I think God is using you to be that bold voice for this generation. It's beautiful how God turns our tragedies into testimonies. May God bless you David.

The difference between people who listen to go tell others, those who can hardly wait for you to finish talking to give their own antidote and those who genuinely listen and allow you to have valid feelings, name them, appraise and shame accordingly without being gods.
You are a valid voice Maeri!

What he said about the medication is not true..I wish people could provide accurate information. Here are some facts
    1. Therapy and medication always works better than each alone
    2. All medications have side effects, some mild, but present nonetheless.
    3. Depression, regardless of the cause, results in a drop in serotonin levels, so the medication re establishes this balance. One can make an analogy with Diabetes, it's as a deficiency of insulin, similarly depression is deficiency of serotonin.
    4. Depression is fully treatable. After the duration of antidepressant medication, one can stop medication and have a normal mood - it doesn't " go lower than before". Yes if your depression is severe, it can recurr, this also depends on the triggers
    5. This is where therapy comes in - therapy helps you work through the trigger ls of depression and to improve your coping skills to try prevent further episodes of depression.
Also, causes such as substance abuse (alcohol) and medical causes eg underachieve thyroid should be treated or excluded.
    7. Depression is a MEDICAL problem, dont tell people to "get over it". Would you tell someone with diabetes to "get over it"?

The problem is that many professionals are out to treat illnesses, but not to heal them. They give you a quick-fix band-aid plaster, that's all😡. Jesus heals & saves🛐

That doctor though.... S/he failed in one way, should have spoken and listened to his/her patient before even giving the quick fix of medication.
