    Omicron cases have started rising throughout the country. But should we be worried, how does it fare in comparison to the delta variant, what is the hospitalization rate & what is the fatality rate? In Episode 911 of CutTheClutter, Shekhar Gupta brings out the data from studies conducted in South Africa's Gauteng and the UK about the Omicron variant

    Shekhar, it would be great to hear from you in a CTC about how this pandemic has impacted our education system, starting from primary / secondary to undergraduate and beyond. I don't find a rationale behind closing schools as a first point when govt reacts to a upsurge of covid infection. A vast majority of Indian students do not have access to internet and edge device (laptop or desktop computer), schools and colleges are not equipped with devices to conduct virtual classes. Science and engineering education just cannot happen without laboratory. Obesity is another problem as kids are confined within the house. Why have bureaucrats and politicians shown no concern about the learning and education? Pubs, malls and restaurants are open, whereas schools are closed for a very long time now. Is government concerned only about the tax revenue, nothing else?

    • @sanjaynalamaru
      @sanjaynalamaru 2 года назад +2

      Our education system is geared to make kids ready for the economy and to add value to the economy. The risks of COVID spreading rapidly through school is more dangerous than a year of remote learning imo.

    Omicron summary: Much more infectious, much more mild, causes few deaths, but can still overwhelm hospital system due to high base/spread of virus. India has an advantage this time - sero positivity is high due to exposure to virus or vaccination. But still Omicron cannot be taken lightly. • @ramukut
    @ramukut 2 года назад +5

    Great job in reading the data. One thing you need to consider is that the % of people dead is based on people who were hospitalized. When you say you can be 1 out of the 5 people who died - please understand this: In the Omicron variant period, there were 258 deaths out of 133K infections. That is roughly 2 in a 1000 positively identified case - or 0.2%. In the case of Delta, this was 1107/33K = 3%, and for Beta, this number is 1,892/41K ~= 4%. So, Omicron is roughly 15 times less deadly than Delta and 20 times less deadly that Beta.
    Also, consider this: The true number of infections is under-reported significantly because we know we don't identify every infection. Only those that are tested get identified. So, there are a number of untested infections too. Given Omicron is much milder, the chances of people showing symptoms are also much less which reduces the chance of people testing and turning positive. For all we know, we may be identifying only 1 in every 20 infections. So, the true infection fatality rate during this period is probably around 1/20th of 0.2% or 0.01%.

    The spurt in COVID cases seem to be from Delta varient. The cases had gone down to below 7000 cases but suddenly now its more than 40,000. The Omicron portion is still about 2000. Nobody's talking about the rise of Delta varient inspite of extensive vaccination. Not a single channel including you are talking about this crucial issue. This is the point that needs study and explaination at the earliest.

    Hi Shekhar
    Here is wishing you a very happy new year; I am still waiting for a response from you, it would be my fan moment :)
    Some feedback for today's CTC and in general when you de-clutter scientific papers (I am from medical industry and hence know bit about these papers, I am not from clinician world though).
    1. You could have connected the fact that Omicron does not need supplemental Oxygen because it attacks upper respiratory track as suppose to main lungs. You mentioned both but did not co-relate them. It is very important "why" of Omicron being mild.
    2. In general when you do scientific papers or scientific CTC, you use lot of data. I mean you spend more time on spelling out data as suppose to analysis of that data. Your audience can go back and look at data, its the declutter through analysis that is we enjoy. Sandhya Ramesh does wonderful job of this. Also, you may want to consider using your own animation to do such de-cluttering and not copy the charts from studies. This is little investment that you may want to consider as simplification animation is specialized job.
    These are my 2 cents. Hope you don't mind giving constructive feedback.
    regards
    Rakesh (Ireland)

    what is the guarantee that the numbers indicated against omicron in this study is actually Omicron and not the delta? was genomic sequencing done of the hospitalized or deceased ppl during the omicron wave?

    You can say that again: It is not a small mercy that the hospitalization and death curves have behaved very differently. I had pointed this out based on Gauteng data when you were panicking with Omicron.
    Looking forward, this is how it is looking in England which has 45 percent vaccinated with boosters. Even then, in one just week, one in 15 got infected (not symptomatic, just RAT tested). One in ten in London. In one week! So everyone is going to get infected but vaccinated people will have the best outcomes (and may not even feel it), and others are going to have a milder than Delta/Beta outcome. Community immunity (used to be called herd immunity before) is, therefore, likely?

    1. Beta, delta, Omnicorn....virus vl not fade away in near future. Some variant vl be very devasting, some mild.. But they vl remain.
    2. V have to devise ways n means to evolve from this..though deaths vl be thr..
    3. Its our responsibility to fight thru.. Govts can only assist the population ..
    4. Let us be more responsible..
