Just got my Elmarit 24,28,35,90 and Summicron 50 from 1970-76, I'm in love with them. Great micro contrast, the fall off is as good as Cooke. Nothing too sharp and nothing too shallow. Those vintage Zeiss got more 3D pop but their roll off are really awful which make them look more like photos, and they dont have the color/apeture consistency.
It really is SUCH a massive difference... the spatial representation is very special. It somehow feels 3D to my eyes... like you can just reach into the image. Whereas with sigmas/cheaper modern lenses there is just sharpness verses bokeh/blurriness there is something more going on here. You can sense the minute distance change from her nose to her cheeks, but it does that across the entire image. I get a similar sense from zeiss and other expensive lenses.

The first video I knew was shot with Leica R was the award winning Dove Real Beauty Sketches commercial, shot by Ed David, who used a RED MX. Ed has a set of Leica R's and often uses them in projects. The combination of sharpness with vintage low contrast and neutral colour is remarkable. Since then, I've wanted Leica R lenses. Still haven't got them, but I'm working on it. As for camera vs lenses, I think I agree. Unless you're regularly booking jobs that pay considerable money, a 5k+ camera isn't worth it. You're better off building rental fees into the budget if the client wants RED or Arri, or a C300 II. Put your money into gear that will last across cameras, like lenses, lighting, tripods/grip, mics/recorders, etc.

I love the look of these lenses, but I've been leaning toward building a cine-modded Contax Zeiss set. Do you have an opinion on those lenses vs the Leica Rs?
The general consensus is that Contax Zeiss have a more contrasty, modern look compared with Leica R, and they seem to have a cooler cast. There are shooters who swear by either. Contax Zeiss lenses are a bit less expensive and easier to acquire than Leica R, but still have great build and image quality.
@@matteobertoli yeah, love your video and you are absolutely right. Been shooting a lot with leicas and now I got the chance to get my own set. I do own a RED Epic Dragon - so I known I can produce great images now :))) Thanks for the video man, good work!
Really cool video man, you're becoming one of my favorite youtubers ! Just out of curiosity, how much did the whole set cost approximately ? I'm not looking for an exact number it's just that I have no clue whether it's around 5k or 50k... Thanks bro !
With all due respect, your numbers are way off when comparing investments and you’re not taking into account the massive increase in lens production happening now. Bought my Red Scarlet-W brain for $10K 4 years ago. I can sell for $5500 now. The accessories were about $10K. I can sell those for about $6K now. So it depreciated $9,500 in 4 years. But in that time I made over $110K-$120K in rental income from it, renting it at $400-450/day. And in regards to lens production, the cost of lens manufacturing has gone way down, allowing a lot of new companies and lenses onto the market recently. Some are even starting to be produced with the purpose of looking vintage. People used to say invest in lighting right before all the innovations in LED’s. The truth is whatever you invest in is likely to depreciate these days because the speed of innovation is only accelerating. Important to take that into account.
Nah, I think you missed the entire part of VINTAGE lenses and limited production. Leica R are extremely rare and the demand is greater than the supply, especially for certain serial numbers. New lenses have nothing to do with these and the new ones made like vintage you are talking about are extremely expensive (Kowas anamorphic set from ps is 100k dollars). My $7700 Leica set bought one year ago is now worth at least $9,000. That is an investment and they are gonna keep going up. Again, demand and supply.

@@LucaBono.Studio The FC on that is wild though. But whether that matters of course depends on intended usage. With FF I would never go for such a wide lens as a only one. Remember, a cinema “normal lens” is more a 75mm FF equivalent than a 50mm. (We don't want our footage to look iphonish, now do we? ;-)
@@KS0stli then you know what to take as your only lens 😉.
My favourite from all the Leica R lineup is the 35mm.
@@LucaBono.StudioTo each his own. The field curvature doesn't bother med personally, it's indeed a very good 35.
Thank you sir, love the advise
I love the look of these lenses, but I've been leaning toward building a cine-modded Contax Zeiss set. Do you have an opinion on those lenses vs the Leica Rs?
The general consensus is that Contax Zeiss have a more contrasty, modern look compared with Leica R, and they seem to have a cooler cast. There are shooters who swear by either. Contax Zeiss lenses are a bit less expensive and easier to acquire than Leica R, but still have great build and image quality.
Hi Matteo what do you think to the 24mm?
Would have liked this video to appear AFTER the RED Komodo releases, to have your opinion...
Definitely not an investment. I am also not interested in a $6,000 camera that can’t shoot 60p :)
Did you get them from Mark and then send them to Duclos or were they modded in the first place?
Already modded
Just Got my set!
Congrats!!!!
@@matteobertoli yeah, love your video and you are absolutely right. Been shooting a lot with leicas and now I got the chance to get my own set. I do own a RED Epic Dragon - so I known I can produce great images now :)))
Thanks for the video man, good work!
Love this
Really cool video man, you're becoming one of my favorite youtubers ! Just out of curiosity, how much did the whole set cost approximately ? I'm not looking for an exact number it's just that I have no clue whether it's around 5k or 50k... Thanks bro !
Thanks! It’s in the Description!
How sharp & contrasty are Leica lenses ?
Nice video. Im looking at leica r lenses. How do you mount them to the bmpcc?
Mine are EF modded ;)
@@matteobertoli I just realised bmpcc 6k is ef mount. I've the 4k version so will mod them to ef and just use my speedbooster. Thanks for the reply
Can a Leica R- lense fit to a digital camera body? I hv a few R lenses
How much did that set of lenses cost?
MI R description
Very solid advice! And great strategic thinking! Thank you!
What happens to the quality when you just buy a mount to convert it to Ef?
Nothing they just replace the back mount
Dritto al punto 👏
Aaand the ebay prices will never be the same again...🤓
Are you using a speed booster with them?
No they are ef
I totally agree, that's great advice. Micro Four Thirds is the best mount for getting good, affordable lenses for. Thats Sigma 18-35mm is ugly af tho.
how did you get this set so cheap?! I mean 7K for a whole set is almost nothing compared to one of his 50mm he is selling for 4.5K!
$7700 for 4 lenses :) I know, lots of people want them so they are going up in price!
Are your Canon FDs de-clicked?
1991ClarkJames they are not
@@matteobertoli Thanks. It's lovely to get a response back from creator's on RUclips! :-)
where to buy this one?
Description
Great advice not to invest much in a camera!
