    I agree with you: our work and our relationship with agencies are changing. One of my client (food blog 3,6M subscribers) for whom I shoot 8-10 days every month for two years, during our first meeting said: i dont need you shooting professional. Try to shoot like amateur bc people more trust such content. Well, i need to say it was hard!!! Imagine small pro crew (all of us have background working for Discovery channel): 3 cameramen with cams from GH6 to FX6 to C500, sound guy with Sound Device and cameramen trying to imitate amateurish skills. Handheld, wobling cam, bad lighting, 8 bit formats, no color correction in post to match cams. Only sound guy do his work professional, because people like good sound.
    What I want to say: today not everyone needs polished cinematography, so you can use any cams (they all great now, btw) for different content type. Is there place for high quality content? For shure. But today blogers cut large amount of pie from big boys.

    Commercial work is turning into content. The gear getting cheaper isn’t the real problem, people are always what take up the majority of budgets. I’ve also noticed the extreme margins some agencies are taking… it’s frustrating because it compounds the problem as it’s caused a lack of trust and made them look for cheaper ways to make their content.

    We live in the fast food content world and I hate vertical video format. I hope sometime in the future Instagram will add horizontal video by rotating the phone.

    Just saw "In a Violent Nature". Extremely low budget film, made five million opening weekend. Shot on a Canon c70 with FD lenses with simple locations and a compelling idea. We don't need multi million dollar budgets anymore. Just work with what you have, thats when the true magic comes out!

      Made 2M, not 5. Would love to know the budget. In LA a low budget indie movie can be up to 5M 😆 so not that low

      @@matteobertoli After digging a little, I found an interview, and the director said they originally shot on an alexa with a budget until something happened to the lead and they decided to restart to film with a limited light kit, the c70 and FD photography lens. So its yeah it can go either way😆

      @@Matthew_Robert_Vincini ahah crazy! I remember my first feature it was under 50k dollars. It’s always fun to hear people saying they are shooting a very low budget feature only to find out they had 3M dollars 😂

      Some new indie film makers don’t even have a budget.. they just take their camera and shoot!! With little to no money!! That’s the real inspiration nowadays.. and you can get it on something like Tubi and get paid!! 🙌🏾🙌🏾💻💻🎥

    Something that I've noticed consistently since just before the pandemic that I've never seen anyone talk about is that in the US, many high level commercial projects are shipping their heads of department (producers, director, DP) over to countries where production is much cheaper, where there are no unions, where kids can work longer hours, and it's cheaper to pay for flights and all that than to shoot here in the US. You can usually tell these commercials because they don't have any dialogue, or dialogue is off-screen and we don't see any characters clearly speaking on-screen. This has additional benefits of these spots being voice-overed in any language they want to international use. I know this as I work as a storyboard artist for tv commercials and have worked with the biggest household brands out there. They board here and then ship the crew out. It's a growing trend and concerning for all involved except the companies / brands of course...

    It’s crazy we know We’re all participating in something that is bad for us at rapid speed. Devaluing the art form that is cinematography, directing, lighting etc.. and it’s not to create things that are memorable either. You can tell a story in 15 seconds but is it a really a good one? How complexed and nuanced of a story can you tell? And this is all for these content pieces that will be forgotten in 2 minutes. I hate to sound so negative I’m only 27 and I’ve been in this industry for a few years. But it ain’t looking too good.

      "TV commercials have figured that out. Leave content out of it, and some of the most spectacular examples of film art are in the best TV commercials. Forget what they’re doing - selling beer - and it’s visual poetry. Incredible eight-frame cuts. And you realize that in thirty seconds they’ve created an impression of something rather complex. If you could ever tell a story, something with some content, using that kind of visual poetry, you could handle vastly more complex and subtle material." - Kubrick on commercials

    Streaming wars + interest rates have brought everything to a halt. Started before the strikes. I know many people who have been out of work for over a year. I'm sure it will recover at some point but I doubt it will ever return to 2019 levels.

    Worst time to be a movie/tv fan. Tarantino said this is the worst period for movies since the 50s with the heavy trend of PC culture. In my opinion without physical media, shows and movies are so much harder to find and sometimes just disappear forever. But for content creators this it’s an age of feast. All streaming services are after content. All companies are after videographers. It’s crazy how much work is out there.

    It definitely is changing. But I would argue for the better in terms of business opportunities. Content is king and there is only going to be more opportunities for all of us. Is it different than traditional film, yes. Is it better than traditional film, no, at least in an artistic sense. But for someone who is a working professional you can definitely create a more sustainable business model by adopting retainers on a monthly basis, which allows you to build a full team of people you want to work with. It’s how I began growing my business and am able to employ others to handle my editing etc.

    Great chat man! I’ve been adjusting to the social media vertical world for over a year now! It’s just a sad reality but there’s no other way around. 10-15 secs reels/videos is golden now.

      Not true at all. RUclips stopped pushing Shorts a while ago. I watch some Shorts, but I prefer longer content.

    I'm below the line crew in Vancouver BC. The industry has absolutely changed since before the strike. The greed of the studios and producers is destroying us. They will not hire a crew and are cutting us at every opportunity. Currently working on the largest budget show in North America, and we are basically 30 people short, in my department. The studios, represented by the AMPTP, are running us into the ground...

    Always interesting to hear perspectives outside the US. I'm one of those Arri kids (just kidding)
    I have noticed a couple things in the circles I live and work in:
    There is a delayed reaction to the pandemic, AI, and the crazy politics here in the US. As a result there appears to be hesitation. Products and promotions on hold as they try to figure out how to get the best return on their investment (socials, streaming, theaters). That hesitant behavior is creating an unsettled marketplace for creatives across the board.
    Fingers crossed that we eventually return to something we all recognize and can work with but as you stated there are changes and we will have to adapt.
    I used to go to movies in the theater at least once a week. I prefer some films in theaters and love the collective experience. This time of year used to be inundated with enough films to see at least 2 a week.
    In my local theater there is a very limited selection of films of which has not been turning over fast enough and there is no giant selection of clear summer blockbusters anymore.
    I hope they return. I like making them and I like watching them!

    Interesting. I had a boost in work from 2020 and it's slowed a bit in the past year (2022 was my busiest year ever). The kind of work is the same as ever and I have more than enough to keep myself busy. I've been desperate for another camera for ages but had other financial priorities but over time I'm being more and more conservative with my ideas about upgrading (I shoot on a P4K) as I can get great images with my current camera/glass combo. I'll see what I decide but I think staying well within your means is always sound advice.

    Very good video and I am glad to see film makers like yourself addressing this. It seems that the things Gary Vee has been saying about content is literally coming to pass. Companies now want to stay in front of their audience with quality short form content.
    That is good for us though, because we can focus on those retainer clients and raise the bar for short form content. Companies will want what their competitors have. If their competition is rolling out high-quality short form media they will want it to. They'll have to in order to stay relevant.
    And that same short form content functions as a test bed for their larger paid ad campaigns. Reduces risk for them and it helps us to deliver higher production ad's that actually perform. Which in theory keeps us paid because we're delivering results.

    Solid opinion on the direction the film industry is moving in. It's the time of excess to access without much reflection in between or time to digest what we're consuming. New and improved cameras coming out continuously helps democratize filmmaking but at the same time devalues the skills it takes. Being that the film industry is where art and business collide it makes sense that both aspects will be exploited. These times are both exciting and disheartening in some ways for artists. However I think people of all ages will continue crave true creativity and real storytelling. As filmmakers and artists I think we must look at how we can be more innovative with a human touch that everyone can relate to.

    Lo que yo percibo de introducir nuevas tecnologías en todos los sectores de la vida es que esas tecnologías, en vez de ayudarnos, nos desayudan. Es mi humilde opinión. Estamos dejando que las nuevas tecnologías nos gobiernen y hemos dejado de lado los valores y las personas. Estamos deshumanizando el mundo. Y esto es un gran error. Existe crisis porque los ciudadanos lo están permitiendo todo. Están permitiendo que unos pocos hagan una crisis global, y eso está empobreciendo a la población entera. El mundo del vídeo podría mantenerse si mucha gente dejara de lamer el culo a esos pocos... que controlan el mundo y lo están llevando al desastre. Amigos, los sentimientos, las capacidades del ser humano, no las pueden reproducir nunca las máquinas, las inteligencias artificiales... todo esto es un gran negocio de esos pocos para ser ellos más ricos y poderosos, y destruir a la población. Cada día se puede ver más claro. Yo abogo por volver a lo que era. Menos tecnologías, y más contacto entre personas. El sentimiento que le pone un montador a lo que hace, o el como alguien hace o realiza un documental, su visión, eso una IA es incapaz de hacerlo, estamos perdiendo el norte, y este tiempo requiere de volver a encontrar ese norte.

    Agree things are changing, in all the creative industries. My son is just about to go to university to study sound engineering and music production at Point Blank in London. He took a year out after his A levels, and in hindsight that was a good move: in that year, AI tools seem as though they may change the production processes of the future. One of the reasons we liked Point Blank was their entrepreneurial emphasis, and their focus on helping students become productive and adaptable to the market place. This has always been important, but the pace of change does seem to have sped up... or maybe I'm just slowing down, LOL...

    This video motivated me to reach out to cancel a subscription that I was paying $120+ a month on... But I wasn't using it due to lack of work. They have silly rules to lock you in for a full year. I simply reached out explaining the situation and... presto! No longer paying absurd amounts on nothing so thank you Matteo!

    The conentration of spending has diverged into many more silos, this is what is happening, couple this with the innovation in AI and the fact that we are at the bottom of the recession, then we have a dramatic change happening.
    The good new is that people get bored after a while and revert back to what was once before (i.e. the "retro" phase).

    If the younger '10 sec attention' span target market in now established lets hope that this will get boring and a search down the road to appreciate what cinema is about of storytelling through the image. This is craft and story combined to create a response. My concern is however that the 10s bite size, fast food approach will push them away from the (using your subject) great wine and classic food way of image/sound led storytelling altogether. Brands will then chase this. but brands like Rapha etc are still bucking this trend. Nice work Matteo

    If you want to make a living in Commercial film and advertising, yes the world is changing. If you want to make art for yourself or classic cinema, it is still the same. Both are viable options, but one is a passion, the other is a career; I want to make art, not work commercially; but if you want to sell your skill for social media, great! I think you have to take a real honest look at why you're doing what you're doing, and go from there.

    There’s only two major studio projects around Boston at the moment and a lot of the experienced crew in the area are shifting into “day job” mode for a while. Looks like it will be a long quiet winter around here.

    We have to stop dodging bullets: there’s no reason to assume AI won’t continue to improve exponentially in the coming years, and that being the case, it is beyond obvious that physical production won’t be able to compete with it. Renting equipment, hiring cast and crew, moving them to a location, getting a permit for the location, or building sets will be exponentially more expensive than generating shots. AI generators will soon have a user interface like a 3D software, making it easier to navigate and edit the scene in whichever way you want. This is what’s coming for us in 5 years or less. The only way the industry will keep on going is if legislation deems everything AI generated uncopyrightable, therefore forcing people to keep on shooting stuff for real like we’ve always done, if they want to make money out of it. If that doesn’t happen, it’s a given that the industry will collapse or, at the very least, suffer a severe convulsion that will shrink it considerably and leave it unrecognizable. Only documentaries will be safe from this because, well, they are documenting reality.

    Colin and Samir had an episode touching on this recently. Hollywood is picking up top RUclips filmmakers and anywhere else they can cut costs. Films made from magazine stories or podcasts.

    These are all very true in the industry. Adapting and checking your ego at the door is a big one as well. I've ran into so many DPs who had such a big ego and said they won't make social media content because they want to focus on feature films and big commercials. Their work has dried up and some still refuse to taker that pay cut and turn that camera vertical for some of the clients. Adapt and find your place in the new world and perhaps bring your style to this new thing that won't pay you as much but you will still eat. I've had to adapt myself and it's what it is.

      That’s not called having an ego that’s called refusing to partake in a movement that is immoral where they are undervalued for their work. 9x16 is the future there’s no doubt about it, but that doesn’t mean it’s good.

      ⁠@@fedcha7I agree with you there. I possibly chose the wrong word “ego”. I never said that it was good but what happens is and I fall in the same boat. I feel my value is worth more and it’s hard for me to want to take that pay cut when you know your worth and now that most clients are pushing the social media platforms and paying less because the entry level to quality has shifted it makes things more challenging to play the game per se without dropping prices or overall adapting to this new medium. Which in my opinion is a somewhat bottleneck of good work.

      Shoot, I'mma bout to turn a camera vertical to pay some bills! It's better than not working. I can always do a personal film project as a creative outlet. I'll have the money to do it from shooting business content.

    Whereas owner operators made good margin renting gear alongside their services the agencies / studios don't care as much about gear anymore and those margins made it possible to make a decent living. Operator skills need to be charged higher going forward to make up for that. Skilled operation is still the important part of that equation.

    The changing market offers interesting opportunities for new people approaching this field but for who has studied years and years, got expensive equipment and learn how to "use" his knowledge in every projects is't downgrading. Or at least it is for me. The reality is that clients have already a visual idea of what they want and you are left you not much room to play around it. And with it I'm talking about creativity.

    There is slowdown definitely in mainstream, that has to do with the type and quality of content being produced. When looking at stuff like social media and branding in h general I would say the medium of content is changing. As a content creator if you can deliver on that then there is a lot of work to be had.

    There’s a huge disconnect in the industry. Audiences expect streaming content to be big budget productions and the financial market is not there. Audiences don’t want to chase good content all over the place. Too many streaming and social media providers. Advertising anywhere seems more of a distraction than an attraction. With all these factors, small business, producers, advertisers and agencies are taking a step back to figure out where it makes best sense to place their money and content.

    Almost all of my clients are retainers nowadays. Rather than spending a big budget on a single commercial they'd rather be consistent and have a consistent presence on social media. Plus they'll rarely pay for just footage or a video if it doesn't come in an advertising package along with graphics, ads and social media managing. Now more than ever networking and teaming up with other professionals pays off

    I am 33, right around the age filmmakers break out and I am really wishing I had been born 10 years earlier. The future is so uncertain, how long until movies are not made by people? My dream has always been to be a filmmaker, but that dream might not exist in the near future. Tyler Perry made the smart decision not investing in those studios, Ai has already impacted the film industry and it will only get worse.

    Spot on about budgets and Agencies realizing they don't have to drop big budgets on one piece of content which barely gets reach on socials. From a business point of view it doesn't make sense tbh and I get why they look to get multiple short form pieces of content at cheaper rates due to the access of amazing cinema cameras now at a much cheaper cost.

    When you look at side by sides of a Blackmagic 6K Pro vs. Komodo X and ARRI Alexa mini, you can easily see how the Blackmagic is slightly better in terms of detail clarity and color.

      I hate the look of BM cameras. They have no OLPFs to cut costs. To me always looks like low budget youtube.

    Two weeks ago I pass by the washington square park at NYU. I see 3-4 different student crews are filming. I guess they are doing their project for final. And I checked their camera. One has Sony burano. One has Canon c300 and one has Canon c70. I am like wow those student are rich.

    All things converge to RUclips. Gen X & some of Y are old Hollywood and Netflix. Gen Z & Alpha are Instagram, TikTok & RUclips. RUclips & TikTok is a culture.

      Open gate is how all tv was until not too long ago. We finally moved to a nice wide image and y’all think you discovered something new and fresh by basically cropping the sides off a beautiful image.

    Work is less for many right now, hard to say how it will be in the future, but with AI making things easier to create with less people, it looks like a trend toward much less work long term, but time will tell if it somehow creates more jobs like tech revolutions did in the past

    Gone are the days when the entire family huddled around the TV watching scripted content. Traditional media TV, radio and print have shifted in a seismic way. Media buys have shifted budget allocations to the smaller, targeted social media platforms with the advantage of precise targeting, real time data, analytics and engagement. As pointed out in the video, these changes will translate into diluted earnings across the board.

    Interesting points. I have moved to selling clips rather than whole films. Sometimes a film for training or a specific presentation but by far its all about the socials today which I quite like. Quick turnaround and easy file management. On a side note, may I ask what camera and lens you use and grading process for this video? For a simple talking head its very nicely done. Interesting choice of crop too.

    Its bullshit scripts, this is the age of great documentaries, if you want to do a fictive movie your script should be spectacular. Three movies thats quite new that was worth seeing for me, El Hoyo, Climax, The Golden Glove

    Honestly, I might rather prefer to try shooting vertically than 16x9- which is the worst format of all time. Not wide enough for anything interesting like 2.35… not tall enough for anything interesting like 4:3… just the perfect bland frame dimensions to make everything boring.

    Saw a dude filming with a Sony fx6 shooting vertical video for a bar the other night. Then again I’m heading to a shoot right now to shoot vertical video with a Sony 7iv and a black magic full frame 6k

    Very good! I’m a Black Magic fan and just so happy with the new Pyxis but…. Can I shoot vertical with the Pyxis? My clients are going to notice if I shoot with the Sony or Black Magic? I few thing to think and consider… thank you very much! Always very helpful

      Yes, it can shoot vertical, just like the 6k pro and 6k FF.

      As a 3:2 open gate camera you can cross-crop verticals and horizontals out of the same 6k frame. Similar can be done with the Lumix cameras.

      @@mgonzalezuy oh, alright i get what you mean. From the pictures I've seen, you can get a side plate, that let's you attach a handle there.
      When i have to shoot vertical i usually hold it with the side grip on top and holding the lens on the other hand for focus and balance. Hope that helps

    Alot of reasons why we are in this situation because of the pandemic. The strikes. The streaming wars. We sold out to Hollywood unfornatuately, who make absolute crap movies anyway.

    this industry is dying, if you can't see this you will be in trouble soon today you need to be able to deliver or story(idea- Tiktok) and video with a phone or cheap mirrorless camera and collect an audience there is less space for specialization anymore. More for less - technical and budget boundaries falling

    It definitely is changing. But I would argue for the better in terms of business opportunities. Content is king and there is only going to be more opportunities for all of us. Is it different than traditional film, yes. Is it better than traditional film, no, at least in an artistic sense. But for someone who is a working professional you can definitely create a more sustainable business model by adopting retainers on a monthly basis, which allows you to build a full team of people you want to work with. It’s how I began growing my business and am able to employ others to handle my editing etc.

      I used to be able to do 5 jobs a year and call it a day. I much prefer that model than this obscenity of reel after reel after reel.
