This spoke to me. I’ve been working in film for 13 years and people always assume I should and want to go down the “Hollywood” path. But I’ve always had absolutely no desire to put myself in that environment. I’ve tasted it and seen, and while it was good, like you said there is no time for my friends and family of which I value way more than any dollar or recognition.
Definitely agree with this - I went through a phase of wanting to be a “DP” on sets but after getting some experience working with bigger crews and in the traditional industry I realized how much I prefer smaller crew stuff where I work with friends. Also eating crafty was one of the worst aspects for me😅
I've always loved your honesty, man. These words are so true. I think with the years I've also thought about this. Working at an ad agency (a big one), it also made me realize that I don't wanna keep going that route. 0 sleep, long hours, never stopping, and treating every project as if it was SO urgent (when it really isn't). Right now, my dream is to keep creating content and developing my business, getting back to shooting the projects that I want while having a good life and being able to help my family (my dad is ill). One of my biggest dreams right now, and it's super funny, it's to direct a cliché Hallmark, Christmas movie. They have to shoot that in about 21 days and I think it'd be so fun, since you don't have the pressure of a huge studio, or having to perform in theaters, that kinda of stuff.
Seriously appreciate you making this video. I just switched to a full time job at a small media company after 3 years of freelancing and have been very much enjoying the more balanced lifestyle I have now. Lots of my filmmaking friends were very surprised with this choice and probably wouldn't make the same decision themselves, but for now it's been really good for me. It's been nice to not have to think about work all the time, have consistent pay, and have more capacity outside of work to live life with friends and family. I'm still learning a lot on the job and I get along really well with the small team. If anything, I have more capacity outside of paid work to work on passion projects. This may not be the road to Hollywood or A24 for that matter, but at this point I'm not entirely sure if that's the kind of life I want. The balance and time with loved ones is SO nice. Wishing you all the best and hope you continue to do what you love while still living life!
Matteo, I’ve been watching your journey since the days of filming “towns” and experimenting with the BMPCC OG and Cannon FD lenses!! I’m really happy that you’re on the path that makes you the happiest and brings the extra richness in quality of life that you described. It is truly is far more rewarding to be in the smaller situations rather than part of a larger “machine”. Besides, I rather enjoy the journey of your videos that just naturally “flow” with wherever your creative river is at in the moment. I rather like to consider you a valuable resource, a colleague, a mentor, and a friend who can just hangout and be. I love that you’re back doing work in Spain and Italy!! The cultural backgrounds and historical essence always makes for awesome shots!! 😃👍🙏😇💯❤️❤️❤️
I love your thoughts and it's quite universal. I used to shoot like crazy but I actually slowed down a bit. Working like crazy gives me a lot of burnout. The biggest epiphany I had is that when I was in a middle of shooting a feature film. It was like day 7 , in the middle of the remote area, 3 hours of sleep and then I questioned my life a bit at that time if this was worth to pursue in a lifetime. I wanted a work-life-balance and I wanted to re-connect with my friends in a authentic approach. I love being a DP and a storyteller in general but like doing it so constantly made me fell out of love on film. There's more to life than film basically in general. I re-routed to just by doing marketing videos as a video editor but I reserved special projects as a DP or director in very particular projects that I love. Whether if it was paid or free , it made me fell in love with film again of why I wanted this in the first place.
I totally agree! A work life balance is much more important, especially as you get older. When I was 20 and single it would be been fun I’m sure. You’re work has been a great inspiration for me, thanks for sharing what you do :)
Thanks for sharing Matteo ! Couldn't agree more. I got in USC MFA directing program back in 2019 in L.A, which was a big dream of mine. And ended up dropping out after only one semester for more or less the same reasons as you left this toxic industry. Now I'm directing short docs, small TV ads etc. I'll probably never get the opportunities that i could have gotten in the US, but today I get to do what I love in a non toxic environment + Spending lots of time with my relatives ! Looking back I have zero regrets. Some friends graduated from the MFA program and are now P.A, reading scripts for agents, or struggling to even get a shot as a director... So Sad ...
Kudos to those who choose a niche that align with their goals and desires. Side note, that film with Noam Kroll is dope. I like the indie spirit of Noam with small but effective crews.
100% with you on this. Mental health first and that comes from doing what you love. Small jobs that bring joy are worth more than big jobs that bring stress.
I love you, Matteo! This video is so honest and pure. I also share the same belief/theory as you. Everything moves so fast when one wishes to keep up with the industry that you forget the whole purpose of your existence. I believe we all deserve a well-balanced life, for that is the only way we can truly appreciate the act of being alive.
Matteo, what a wonderful testimony. Unfortunately, the environment in major cinema centers is like that, full of egocentrism, competition and anxiety, totally toxic and superficial. I identify a lot with your choice and I feel better knowing that there are other DPs with this idea of valuing their quality of life. Congratulations, thank you for sharing your experience. I am a great admirer of your work here in Brazil.
Buon lavoro
I love this, Matteo. Your passion, your family, your balance, and carving your own path, is all far more important to me as well. Love your channel sir.
A video every starting filmmaker should watch. I love filmmaking and this video has taught me something about the industry though I would love to grow and have a chance to work on huge film sets.
I feel you brother. We're on slightly different paths you and I but neither is better or worse. It's all personal choice and I respect your's as I do mine. What we do share is valuing life quality as well as job satisfaction. I wish you well and as always, love your videos x
Important video! Been saying no to traveling work to stay at home with the my wife and I think a lot of filmmakers need to identify if they actually enjoy the process in their niche. Been focusing on finding the most enjoyable process and growing a business around it. Cheers for sharing
I feel what you're saying. I personally wished I got established and made a name for yourself, like you have, so I could casually do my own thing with some success. I cannot bear to think of being in a competitive filmmaking world while having a family of my own. If I could do a few smaller projects per month that can put food on the table and everyone is comfortable, I would be good. Like you said, you did what is good for you and I'm happy for you that it's working. You're living the dream.
Ciao Matteo, I totally agree with you. A good life it's all about balance. Success is not shooting a blockbuster but being able to remain truthful to yourself while earning money with filmmaking projects you can handle. Keep it up the good work, Luis
Very refreshing to hear this! Been following your channel for a while and helped me develop my style as a cinematographer. Really appreciate for sharing 🙏🏾
Hi Matteo. Some time ago, I left a comment about the difficulties I had working with filming. I live in Brazil and I really find it very difficult. It's not even about the price I charge, as I have even offered to work for free, and the person didn't want it. The market, in general, cannot see the importance of a well-made production. Today, I decided to abandon my advertising career. I started a company that manufactures pet products with a partner. And for me, this will be my financial income. I will continue working with cinema. In fact, this week I am going to shoot a short film that I wrote the script for myself, and that's it. If in the future I can make a living from cinema, great, if not, I will continue my life making independent films and earning money in another area.

This is something I've been thinking about a lot the last few years, and I'm still trying to find an answer. I love the IDEA of being a DP on big features, and I know I can do good camerawork, but I don't want to live my whole life on set or traveling. I've been really fortunate to find a few small production teams who frequently hire me to do lighting/camera work, and I love working with the same group of people.
Question: At what age did you begin your film making journey? I'm 46 and recently bought my first serious camera (Ursa 4.6K G2). I want to make my own films and maybe get into some paid work. I work full time and will eventually transition into it being a full time carer.
I'm 100% with you on all of this. I used to want to be a big screen actor. I got some credits and did some music theatre but then settled down to family life and focus on other priorities and now shoot corporate films. I do want to do more creative work, but I have no desire to join the rat race.
I'm in the middle 30s years, I decided to drop Commercial DOP pursue, same for you : I wasn't happy. I'm doing more and more documentary, where I find connection with people and discovering various topic, people, worlds much more fullfilling than having to stress so much about getting hired and light a futile ad with a life span of swipe on instagram. Nothing wrong and Documentary can be really though but damn, I feel you, and totaly understand your chance. Sets up to 10 people (client included) is where I'm feeling great, above it's starts to get very weary, real quick.
Hi Matteo, how are you doing? We used to be in the same class back in university in Brescia. I really like this kind of content. I was wondering: have you ever made a video on keeping one's mental health, considering the highly stressful circles you worked in?
exactly my take on this whole industry, im a big fan of small crews, passion projects. big cews? no thanks, i dont want to show off, manipulate and pretend for a career lol
Thank you for sharing your experiences. It helps clarify some mysteries of which paths to take. Could you please share the link to the film you worked on that you described as the the best experience of your life?
Thank you so much for this. Being able to be true with ourselves and say that this or that is just not for me. Society and peer pressure makes you think you need to fit a certain category and aim for some specifics, but is it really at the end of the day?
Can you give me advice if I want to start working in branded documentary world? I shoot some sports events, but I want to go into this round more. I live in small country in Baltics - Estonia, and don't know where I can find brands that I can work with.
I don't think LA is right for most filmmakers. Hollywood is destroying itself anyway. Europe, rest of the world is where it is at. You look much happier in Italy Matteo.
Wait, your favorite shoot was that short film and not the corporate thing we did together?!! How dare you!! hahaha -- Ciao Matteo, miss you man! Yes, very cut throat in L.A.. OC much different, that's why I like it here. And if we can get clients closer to the beach, even better!!

I'm 100% with you on all of this. I used to want to be a big screen actor. I got some credits and did some music theatre but then settled down to family life and focus on other priorities and now shoot corporate films. I do want to do more creative work, but I have no desire to join the rat race.
Very Relatable thank you Matteo ❤
No se puede decir mejor! Chapó!👌🏻
Amen Matteo. 100% agree
true, I find that envirement has no soul, like a machine. small niche work is amazing, you get to actually be creative without someone limiting you.
well said, that's a important reality check from you.
Great talk Matteo...appreciate you brother
I'm in the middle 30s years, I decided to drop Commercial DOP pursue, same for you : I wasn't happy. I'm doing more and more documentary, where I find connection with people and discovering various topic, people, worlds much more fullfilling than having to stress so much about getting hired and light a futile ad with a life span of swipe on instagram.
Nothing wrong and Documentary can be really though but damn, I feel you, and totaly understand your chance. Sets up to 10 people (client included) is where I'm feeling great, above it's starts to get very weary, real quick.
Valuable insight. 👏👏
Can't wait to share some wine with you next time I'm in Lisboa!
Drop me an email! But let’s do Italy, much better wine 😂
Always an honest opinion from Matteo
Thank you for sharing your experiences. It helps clarify some mysteries of which paths to take. Could you please share the link to the film you worked on that you described as the the best experience of your life?

Well said!
I remember seeing this question 🙋🏻♂️
Well said !!🙌
small crews I feel I have more freedom but its also better to commuicate
Thank you so much for this. Being able to be true with ourselves and say that this or that is just not for me. Society and peer pressure makes you think you need to fit a certain category and aim for some specifics, but is it really at the end of the day?
Pocket...as in bmpcc? Thanks
Can you give me advice if I want to start working in branded documentary world? I shoot some sports events, but I want to go into this round more.
I live in small country in Baltics - Estonia, and don't know where I can find brands that I can work with.
Pls leave the camera static
you shot this video on dji pocket 3??
@@khaleel898 yes!
@@matteobertoli how do you like this camera so far?? Do you think its worth the hype? I wanna hear your perspective
I love filmmaking but have no desire to make music videos, commercials, events...i only care about narrative work
@@leosylver7 if you can survive out of only narrative work, let me know how you do it 😆
Great!
I don't think LA is right for most filmmakers. Hollywood is destroying itself anyway. Europe, rest of the world is where it is at. You look much happier in Italy Matteo.
Does that mean, you make enough in passive income, that's how you can chose?....that looks like a big house behind you.
@@leosylver7 that’s my parents house.
