Fujifilm X-H1 Review (vs X-T2, Sony a7 III)

    Buy the a7 III: sdp.io/a73
    Buy the X-T2: sdp.io/XT2
    NOTE: You can buy the X-H1 with the battery grip kit for $2,200, and it includes the two extra batteries.
    We've been testing the Fuji X-H1 for 3 months in the real world, with more than 3,300 frames and plenty of video recording experience. It's a great all-around camera. The sensor stabilization was MUCH needed. The focusing is quick and accurate and the video quality looks great. Fuji's lens lineup is spectacular, especially the 16-55 f/2.8 and 50-140 f/2.8, which are our main lenses.
    In most ways, the X-H1 solidly beats all Canon and Nikon APS-C DSLRs, including the Canon 80D, Canon 7D Mk II, Nikon D7500, and Nikon D500. The electronic viewfinder, sensor stabilization, 4k video, and eye-detection autofocus are GAME CHANGERS.
    However, in many ways, we like the X-T2 better. The X-T2 just feels better in our hands, and we prefer having the exposure compensation dial on the top, rather than another display. However, the X-T2 is lacking sensor stabilization, which we've found to be incredibly useful.
    Unfortunately for Fujifilm, Sony launched the a7 III shortly after the X-H1, and at the same price point. Actually, once you add the grip (which you need for the X-H1), the Fuji camera is more expensive. However, the a7 III has a sensor that's more than twice as big, and shows less than half as much noise. Availability of fast full-frame lenses also means you have more options for the a7 III, especially if you love background blur and low-light performance. We also preferred the a7 III's battery life, focusing, and video quality.

    Fuji X-T2 shooter here, & I have no problems with your criticism. For me, the "analogue" controls sold it, vs the (to my mind) harder to love Sony system, but everyone's needs are different, & if the Sony better fits a person's needs, then then they're right to go for it, either way, keep on enjoying your photography.

    NOTE: You can buy the X-H1 with the battery grip kit for $2,200, and it includes the two extra batteries. FYI, the 50-140 f/2.8 is equivalent to a 70-200 f/4 on a full-frame camera. If you're interested in learning about equivalency, check sdp.io/crop, or just google 'full frame equivalency'. Here's a calculator: mmcalc.com/.

    I made the switch from Canon to Fuji (x-t2) over Sony because
    1 - Fuji has camera design like no other
    2 - Firmware updates
    3 - Native glass is phenomenal. Lenses like the 56 1.2 and 50-140 2.8 are amazing.
    4 - I don't really see a need for full frame for my uses. Sure I shoot lowlight a lot, but the x-trans III sensor has really impressed me.
    5 -This one is personal preference, but I really just dislike how Sony handles things like it's menues, not to mention they don't give firmware updates like Fuji does.
    Don't get me wrong the A7III is an amazing camera, but for around 1,000usd you can find a used X-T2 and put the other 1k into lenses

      Not to mention part of the appeal of mirrorless is size and weight, but once you add in the FF lenses you have next no size or weight advantage.
      As far as the battery... well Sony didn’t get it right until their third revision.
      Either way, me likes my Fuji/Canon setup. But if I had to sell one kit it would have to be the canon, the Fuji’s just bring too much joy to shooting.

    You're right about your review. I still bought the X-T2 last month, because the compactness of the system with the lenses was crucial for me. The decisive shortcoming of the Sony a7 III is the body, if the GM lenses are used, the camera can simply be held badly and it is therefore very front-heavy. Technically the Sony is top, but I just have more fun taking pictures with my X-T2.

    I own both the XH-1 and Sony A7III. When I want to shoot for fun, I pick up the XH-1. When shooting casually (e.g. at a party or wandering the streets), I am almost always happier with the user experience and the images produced by the XH-1 v.s. my A7III. There's a special sauce that Fuji images have OOC. The color and tonality are so nice on the Fuji. Even in raw, I prefer to edit the Fuji files vs. the Sony files because I get to use Fuji film simulations in Lightroom. I own the A7III because the video is better (smoother footage, better AF), low light shooting is better, I sometimes need that extra shallow DOF, and the Eye EF is a game changer. However, the XH-1 is worth every penny. Don't be fooled by someone saying that some camera has more features so it's better. Not all features are valued the same.

    • @Lainer1
      @Lainer1 4 года назад +2

      It's true. The XH-1 is a gem. Fuji is killing it with all of these awesome cameras. I prefer them over Sony, but Sony is killing it as well though; certainly much more than Canon or Nikon in regards to Mirrorless..Sony is great for video, whereas Fuji is still lagging. It's all a matter of what you like, or what you need to do with the gear. A pro usually has MANY brands of camera gear to use in different situations. No one camera does it all, just as one lens doesn't do it all.

    I recently bought the xt2 with the fuji 10-24mm f4 and the 50-140mm f2.8 and its an absolute dream for landscape photography. The images are absolutely superb, super sharp and the colors are perfect with every image. The xt2 is so much fun to shoot with especially coming from a nikon d5500. Just another video showing us that the fuji systems are that amazing they are being compared to full frame sensors once again. There are so many comparison videos out now comparing the X-T2 or the xh1 with either the the canon 5d4 or the Sony a9 or the a7riii or the sony a7iii or the nikon d850. All these full frame cameras cost so much more money when you add the top quality glass and the difference is just negligible. The main reason the xt2 etc is being compared to full frame is because its that freeking awesome. Keep in mind that there are loads of professional photographers who shoot with fuji mirrorless, who shoot with the sony a6300 and a6500 and who shoot with olympus micro four thirds as well, and they aren't rushing out to buy something that came out 6 months ago because they don't get sucked into all the hype. Please don't be tricked into thinking one system is far more superior than another because when your choosing from some of the latest in camera technology, you really cannot go wrong. Remember its much more about learning and improving as a photographer and less about a new shiny toy.

      I remember when the XPro 2 and the T2 came out and Fuji leadership stated the Fuji 24 mp sensor was comparable to a 36 mp full frame sensor in terms of resolution. It seems people have either forgotten this fact or glossed over it in the rush to trumpet all things new. So yes, I agree with your perspective--its compared to full frame cameras because its that good. I still love my Pro 2 and its mojo.

      Luke Yeah I have to agree that editing the raf files are a little different than your regular raw files, especially when dealing with sharpening. Basically I use a raw converter and use the high pass filter in Photoshop to sharpen my files if needed. I wouldn't like Fuji at all if i didn't know how to manage the raw files.

      Do you use Nikon glass on your Fuji? I have a Nikon d3300 and I want to upgrade. I have a few "vintage" manual lenses but focusing with the 3300 is so difficult. I guess the Fuji xt3 will help me with this. And theres something that worries me. That is Photoshop. I'm a hardcore PS editor and compositor. Would be the Fuji good for this? I heard people use it as a out of camera JPGs and I really don't like that... I want to freely edit my RAWs.

    i bought this over the a7iii because:
    a: i want photography to be enjoyable to me and the x-h1 is way more enjoyable to use, and no one (probably 99% of clients) will notice the difference
    b: this camera will continue to get better over its lifespan, who knows where it will be in a few years, hopefully closer to the a7iii in af and other ways that can be improved with an update
    c: i saw this video, where at weddings you can print off images off the little fuji instax printer for the bride/groom or other guests and they seemed to really like it and its a unique way to give them some photos ahead of time in a unique way
    edit: its all personal preference but for me the fuji system was just the right fit for me and also for travel jpegs with film simulation are a nice way to get nice images without editing and save sd card space and are ready for insta etc right away.

      i agree with you man.
      The battery still sucks, though.
      And its one of those things that wont improve with firmware updates.
      I wanted to get this camera... but when i picked it up..it just didn't communicate with me.. Actually i prefer the a7III 's ergonomics. it feels better in the hands.. and other than the 100/200mbit video, it just beats the Fuji in every other category, technically.
      For eg.. in handling.. (i also shoot Nikon) the Sony's got the custom modes 1&2 in the PASM dial. I use that on my Nikons.. and its brilliant, in order to quickly switch between settings.
      My X-T20 has got the Auto dial..which is great, for a panic moment.. but other than that.... having those 2 memory banks is really really great !
      Only time will say, ..if i'll derive more pleasure from shooting the A7III..or the X-T20.

      Better with lifespan? On an example of XT-2, if they release the camera with half the functions missing, and only now after 2 years they manage to catch up to Sony a6300 feature-wise, is that really getting better or simply releasing all the functions you paid for already? I really like to know what I am buying instead of waiting if they randomly decide to release a firmware update for my particular camera. Also, 2,5mm jacks, are you kidding me? Any why do they continue with this terrible joystick?

    • @Rationalific
      @Rationalific 6 лет назад +6

      I don't disagree with you regarding defaults, but did you know that there are at least four separate methods to use in the Sony a7 III to change the JPEG output? There are the 1) Creative Styles (which you can choose from a list and tweak with contrast, saturation, sharpness to your liking), 2) White Balance Tweaks (specify exact additional warmth/coolness as well as tint for every white balance setting, as well as tweaks for the "Auto" setting), 3) Picture Profiles (more for video, but can be used with stills), and 4) Dynamic Range Optimization. It's fine if you still prefer the Fuji (my out-of-camera JPEGs on my a7 III are still not as good as they could be), but I hope you at least knew about all of those. (Also, I would like a fifth method, which could add a tone curve, or otherwise play with blacks, whites, highlights, and shadows.)

    I don't mean to criticise but when you dedicate a chunk of the review to address the consumer "dollar" then you should have mentioned that even if the a7 iii is priced in the same range, its lenses are much more expensive, bigger and heavier too, and at the end of the day a crop sensor overall expenses will be definitely smaller.

    I sometimes wonder how many people that post comments on your videos actually watch the whole video or actually listen to what you are saying. You clearly say that you like the camera and you think it is great. You then point out the pros and cons compared to its competition. You gave a few more opinions on both the Fuji and it’s competitors. You sprinkled some factual comments in there for the nerds (me). You summed it all up by stating that your conclusions were the opinion of one guy on RUclips and you encouraged people to do their homework. I am positive that Ken Wheeler will try to flame you or call you a liar for something in this video. Keep up the good work your videos are entertaining and I value your opinions. You’re a brave man Tony and,technically, not incorrect. I think Fuji is best suited for those who love photography more than technology, or computers. Yeah, so-called full frame, relatively speaking is preferable to cropped sensor but the differences are only crucial in certain situations and at other times only to pixel-peeping minions. If I really just had to go full frame I would go with the D850 - another’s true photographers camera. The Sony’s, while technically excellent are essentially soulless computers with a hole for light to enter.

      A master carpenter can do with cheap tools from a pawn shop what a programmed CNC machine can do.
      I know it's very much a matter of personal preference, but it's our own souls that matter (if we have any), the camera is just a tool. I personally see beauty and art in the Sony even, it's just more subdued, where the precise professionalism is what is emphasized more.
      Would love to try out a Fuji some day, too, though!

      True Sony lenses tend to be more expensive. On the other hand you can get third party lenses for the Sony camera with full autofocus, and Tamron and Sigma are both actively going to be releasing more and more native lenses for the E-mount.

      Owned an A7R3, sold it to go back to the Fuji system. At the end of the day it was about the user experience. If a few numbers are going to make or break if for you, then do whatever helps you sleep at night. The truth is that for 95% of all photogs, you'll never actually use your systems in any sort of way that requires these sorts of tech advancements. It makes our jobs easier, sure. But what we're using now is leaps and bounds better than what was "the best" just 5 years ago.
      Whats frustrating is everyone is all about the numbers, and not about the art and process. As "cliche" as that sounds, there comes a point where everything just starts to become redundant. Most clients can not tell you what camera you shot their photos with. If you're shooting in studio controls, even harder. You'll notice marginal differences, that yes, are better. But it wont make your photography any better. Bad composition is bad composition. Some of the best photos I've seen have come from Cannon L glass shot on $500 APSC bodies... It simply doesn't matter.
      For the 5% of you who actually need what the a7R3/a3 can offer, this review isn't for you. For everyone else, just use what makes you happy. Today's "pro" gear, regardless of brand, makes little difference aside from extreme conditions. Remember that.

    Thank you for taking the time to review them. I wonder if you would be updating the review soon consider now X-H1 has a v1.10 firmware with better focus ability? For higher ISO shooters, IMO the IQ will be cleaner for sure on A7III and the battery is hands down the winner of two.
    Talking about the shooting and ownership experience as a photographer:
    Does the body + lens size and balance matter?
    Does the larger grip that won't leave your pinky hanging in the air matter?
    Does higher resolution for higher detail of EVF matter?
    Does the extremely quiet mechanical shutter matter?
    Does the extremely responsive shutter button matter?
    Does the fully weather sealed body matter?
    Does the well sealed and hard cover doors that cover for all the connectors that will not bent and break easily matter?
    Does getting free firmware that makes your current camera function better for the next 3 years down the road matter?
    Does sharper, cheaper and lighter lenses matter?
    Does tougher and thicker and more scratch resistance of the camera body matter?
    Does retaining the hardware value 2-3 years from now matter?
    Those are questions one may want to go through before making a final decision. Working in retail I have seem so many scratched body, broken plastic cover doors, poor resell value and complains on the shutter noise on A7 models that I think the buyers should know it before they buy it.... just been fair.

    An advantage of the X-Trans sensor is that it has no low-pass filter, a filter which tends to cut out the red wavelengths of the spectrum, particularly H-alpha which is where a lot of emission nebulae glow. The upshot is that Fujifilm X-Trans cameras produce more pleasing photographs of nebulae out-of-the-box than anything else; many astrophotographers have to modify their Canons to remove the filter to get satisfactory results, which then renders them less useful for other photography (you need to have custom white balances to return them to 'normal'). In astrophotography, the X-Trans sensor also seems to be very low noise.

    I own the Fuji X-T2 and I have never missed a shot because of battery life. If you are moving from a DSLR to a Sony or Fuji look into the whole system. One benefit of the Fuji camera system over Sony is the smaller and very very good glass. That's not to say that Sony doesn't have some great glass but it is very expensive and much larger in size. My one complaint with Fuji would be the APS-C sized sensor if it didn't mean the whole camera system increased in size. Fuji is the ideal balance between image quality and kit size.

    If you're spending this money on a camera then Sony A7iii is the way to go, I have just bought an XT20 over an A6300 for a few reason's. The dials, the touch screen with shoot and focus, better menus, better lenses for APSC including the 18-55 f2.8-4 which the Sony kit lens can't touch. The EVF and LCD are excellent and the autofocus is solid too. Sony have taken there focus away from APSC and the lack of lenses is still a problem, still no fast zoom after how long?? Sony want everyone on Full frame but the glass is still pricey.

    • @jackodon74
      @jackodon74 6 лет назад

      Yeah i agree i have the A7 Mk1 but only have 2 lenses, the Zeiss 55 1.8 absolute beast and the 28-70 kit lens. I was lucky i picked a min 55mm used but would not spend 700 on a new one. I was close to buying the Tamron 28-75 but there focus issues and no IBS so that's a problem with the A7 so i would need to upgrade to an A72 just for IS because it's almost the same as the Mk1 or blowing a heap of cash on a Mkii.

      Sony E-mount lenses are the same price or cheaper than Fujifilm, if you actually perform an analysis of all lenses available for both platforms and look at the full spreadsheet of all that are existing, including all test results. There's more than 150 lenses for Sony E-Mount now. Just because Sony makes a G-Master does not mean you are forced to purchase it. You can still purchase lenses which are equivalent to a Fujifilm quality level, i.e. the Sony 85mm F1.8 for $550, Sigma 30mm F1.4 for $300. The huge variety of lenses on Sony allows for stuff at low prices that does not even exist for Fuji. You don't even have to buy FF glass, you can use APS-C(just like Fuji, see?) lenses on your A7III, and still have better ISO performance than an X-H1.

    • @JeremyGalloway
      @JeremyGalloway 6 лет назад

      Yeah, but barring the full frame FE lenses, most Sony E mount lenses designed for APS-C are either bad (16mm pancake, 20mm pancake, 16-55, 10-18), non-existent (fast standard zoom), or ridiculously overpriced (Sony "Zeiss" 24mm f/1.8, sony Zeiss 16-70mm f/4). Other than that, you're left with Sigma and Rokinon glass, which is fine if you're okay with non-native functionality, but it kinda sucks that those brands have to serve as a crutch, and you lose some great Sony features like eye auto focus. You could use a full frame lens with those bodies, but the size and price of those lenses are impractical for Sony a6000 line. I just got rid of my Sony a6500 since the only good, native lenses DESIGNED for its sensor were the 35mm and 50mm primes. Other than that... not much. I will add though that if you don't mind non-native glass, the Sigma 60mm f/2.8 is probably the sharpest lens I have ever owned.

  • @PhotoTubeUK
    @PhotoTubeUK 5 лет назад +1

    The "full frame advantage" is constantly being overstated by many commentators (not just you, Tony)! In the real world for most people this so called advantage is non-existent or insignificant. You can still get the required DOF on the Fuji X system by selecting the right lenses and using them properly and the Fuji X series lenses have a 30% weight saving advange over equivalent full frame lenses. Also the cost saving overall is significant. So there! Rant over.

      When you have good light X-H1 is great, but when you have a cloudy day or low-light then you can see a difference. I like Fuji's system more than Sony's but when it comes to image quality Sony wins - but OK, it's obviously clear that we have here ASP-C and FF world.

    I appreciate that you understand that $2000k is a lot of money for the consumer. Bang for buck, if you’re not already invested into the Fuji eco system... the Sony is a great tool. Although I do think there are some things the Fuji X-H1 offers over the A7III such as true 180 Degree shutter / DCI 4K Video/ 200mb/s bitrate / 24bit audio / 48hz with low cut filter/ better EVF -- in real world experience the X-H1 IBIS is more effective in photo & video as well. The x-t2 is so good.. I still love it. The photos from the Xt2 are great and that’s no different in the X-H1 ... but man.. that Sony A7III has a lot to offer ... especially now that Sigma has announced the art series will be native.
    I’m stoked to shoot more stuff on the a7III and really push it, but the video I’m getting out of my X-H1 is right there. Feel free to see samples of real world shoots on my channel of both the X-H1 & A7III - if you have either of these cameras .. the good news is that you can get the job done and get paid!!!

    • @JeremyGalloway
      @JeremyGalloway 6 лет назад

      For me the Fuji lenses seal the deal. Great quality, if it's Fuji then you can expect it will never be bad. The same cannot be said for Sony. However, I have been getting into shooting with vintage lenses more and more recently, and the crop factor can get very annoying. I think the Sony A7III could be a great partner for shooting with vintage lenses since it's got the full frame sensor and is stabilized. I understand that many people won't want to shoot a cheap old lens on a $2,000 camera, but there is some really amazing vintage glass out there!

    x-trans was a clever way Fuji found to have a 16mpx sensor and not need an AA filter- and was indeed way sharper than the ~16mpx bayer competition. But now at 24mpx, the bayer competition CAN remove their AA filters and the advantages of xtrans are mostly nullified. BUT- there ARE still subtle differences between the images of xtrans and bayer sensors: but it is not so much in sharpness. Some might call it "mojo"- some would site "pleasing noise", and a host of other subjective, non-empirical "advantages". They (the Fuji "fanatics") are not wrong! It is a different aesthetic which either does or doesn't do it for you.

    • @chrissoclone
      @chrissoclone 6 лет назад +1

      It's quite simply the noise structure - which has a more analogue, organic feel to it (subjective) and it has much less color nose in my experience - compared to say, an A6000, the amount of noise might be the same but it's mostly monochromatic - I never have to sue the color noise reduction slider in LR, only a bit of luminance sometimes - but then as I said the grain structure doesn't bother me so much since it looks more film-like.

Just look at the "cheap camera competition" on RUclips, one understands that it's the creativity and experience that makes the difference. That said, I comes down to which camera one can enjoy more. For me it is the Fuji that does the trick. Different feel, for me it's fun to shoot with the FUJI.
    The Swiss photographer Stephan Wiesner ( RUclips channel ) changed from Canon to SONY, quote "I hate the menu of the SONY, the handling of the SONY, but altogether it's the only camera that contains everything I need for my work..."
    Thanks for the review, I enjoy your videos very much !

      The Canon lcd is dated, but personally I’m not fussed if it saves power, their battery life is fantastic. I don’t actually know if it would make any difference, Fuji seems to be using e-ink given the display is on when the camera is off, a nice touch. But it would be nice to have something nicer and more versatile on Canon, I’m not sure what Nikon is doing. There’s a lot to be said for how the x-h1 does the top display. Maybe the x-h2 will be much more refined, the way x-t2 was much more refined from when x-t1 first came out, before all the firmware updates (you listening, Canon? You could do so much more with your cameras with just a firmware update).

    I don't understand all the hate with the battery life. So what if I have to change a battery after 325+ shots? Not a big deal to me. Remember, in the film days we had to change a roll of 35 mm film every 24 to 36 shots. We're so spoiled nowadays.

    Truth is this camera has been designed during the last 2 years, or even the last 3 years. Truth is Fujifilm didn't know about the Sony a7III or the a7rIII while they were designing the X-H1.
    It is like 2 athletes training for a competition event while at the event, one realize the other one is much better trained. Fuji has to release the camera, you don't train that much not to do the event. But they perfectly know who will win it.
    It is time for everyone to understand that this sport has reached a whole new level.

    It’s not that the other manufacturers don’t know how to provide feature adding updates, they choose to do so, because they want you to pay for the upgrade and make the e.g. next generation more desireable for lower generation users. For features that could be added by firmware, just look at magic lantern for example, canon gimps their cameras on purpose, in order have a feature tier level like system.
    I’m getting more and more interested in fuji and thinking about ditching by canon gear, because they seem to have a much longer firmware/feature support.

    Tony you're absolutely right about Fuji fanboys- they can't take any criticism at all! Couple of years ago I posted on a Fuji forum my opinion about some of the shortcomings of my new X-T10 and the comments were just vicious. The moderator threatened to block my posts and I was attacked like never before. I learned that the Fuji fanboys has absolutely no tolerance when someone dares to criticize any of the Fujifilm products. I still own my X-T10 and although I hate the way the Fuji camera bodies work I still prefer the image quality of the Fujifilm over the Sony.
    Anyway, thanks for the review.

    I would like to add/criticize one major point that always bugs me when it comes to Fuji Raws: Why do you blame Fuji for Adobe not getting their sh*it together? The bad support for Fuji RAW files is entirely Adobe's fault and should not be a minus point for the camera manufacturer. I think sometimes it's forgotten that Adobe was one of the latest to the RAW converter game and wasn't the best to begin with, and older RAW converters handled Fuji and other RAWs better. I'm not talking about nerd solutions like Iridient's plug in, but about Capture One for example which was the high end solution for professionals before Adobe even thought about Lightroom, and still seems to put out much better quality. Even in Apple's long discontinued Aperture (older than Lightroom) Fuji RAWs are rendered better out of the box, as in countless other converters. But since Adobe has aggressively taken over the market and has become the quasi-standard, it's of course every manufacturers own fault if their RAWS don't render as nicely in Lightroom as in any other Converter. BTW, I'm using LR myself and it's by far not as bad as it was anymore, they look perfectly fine in LR in general - but if you make the pixelpeeping test with other converters or run into the wormy artifacts issue, every established RAW converter on the market delivers better results. And I'm pretty sure that's not even only true for Fuji.

      No, no and perhaps.
      Additional weight is to improve strength of body when paired with heavy lenses and increase weather proofing. Same can't be said for the a7iii. It feels like a cheap toy.
      Manual dials do not hinder "fast workflow", they hinder "your workflow".
      X-H1 C-AF in video currently sucks, fingers crossed for the FW release.

      From what I've read, a lot of very popular/successful cameras have the same sensor as their predecessor, just a different processing unit attached. The Nikon D600 and D750 come to mind, released two years apart. People love the D750's IQ.

    The experience is the most important THING(having a camera that makes you want to take pictures is huge), think about it, professional photographers have been making sensational images with lesser cameras for decades...the reality is, the fujifilm XT2& XH1 are about all the camers anyone needs. The fuji lenses are amazing...plus, there is an endless supply of incredible lenses like zeiss, voigtlander and others that are easily adapted to use on fujifilm(their focus peaking is one of the best). Another often overlooked important point, is the support you get with each company, fujifilm support is the best bar none, it's simply ridiculous and should be an industry standard...they keep giving me new features!!!!...no other company does that!!!
    Truth is, no photographer needs every available feature/capability that mankind has to offer. Do you need every feature to become a great photographer and more importantly to enjoy the experience of taking photos...most of the time all the menu's and tech just get in the way of creativity....plus, I bet most of the people that choose the latest camera( by a year) will NOT use anywhere near all the features....they could have saved their money for more glass, vintage lenses and lighting tools etc...which would be better investment and actually make you a better photographer 95% of the time.
    Not that there is anything wrong with getting the latest and greatest every year...I know I do it with phones.
    The experience of the fujifilm Xt2 is second to none...if you don't recognize the inherent fun using the XT2/XH1...you're probably more tech oriented than artistically oriented. But even with that being said, the XT2/XH1 is a modern camera experience with old school feel.
    Now my choice, should I get the XT3 when is comes out or wait...Haha...it will have been 2.5 years, should I feel guilty? Or maybe I should get the GFXr...medium format rangefinder Fujifilm coming out with....see this might make my photos better.
    Or maybe I should get another XT2 at bargain discounts....again, this would make me better by having two cameras operational....less chance of missing shot...better chance of having right lens, better for maintenance, battery...that's how I'm "starting" to think, what system will help me get the shots I need.

    Pretty spot on. I use the X-T2, my girlfriend the A7III. I love the Fuji experience, also find skintones esp. in mixed light more pleasing. Battery life (esp with 50-140) is rather short though. Sony‘s AF is amazingly fast and accurate dynamic range and battery life are great. One big advantage of Sony: you can adapt Canon lenses easily. That makes it less expensive - the price of top Sony FE glass is way above Fuji.

      I can‘t see that Fuji equivalent lenses being cheaper than the Sonys, especially primes. At least not in Germany. You can get the Sony 85mm f1.8 for about 800 Euros whereas the almost equivalent Fuji 56mm f1.2 is about 1.000 Euros. What I like with Fuji is the ability to have an overall smaller package with the f2 lenses (beside the awsome manual controls). The 2 times better image quality statement is at least misleading (if not downright wrong): You have that better image quality on the ff Sony ONLY in those cases where you use the low f stops which don’t have an equivalent setting on the apsc Fuji. It then comes at the price of a very shallow depth of field I wouldn‘t want in many situations. That said and having a Fuji X-T2 I would still agree with all the other aspects of the (very professional and entertaining) video.

    I think Tony has kind of missed a valuable point. Yes the A7III in full-frame, yes it's got better low light capabilities, yes it has a much broader lens range - But heres the thing and I don't think Tony is the only person here on RUclips to pass over this, native lenses for the A7III are way heavier & cost much more than the Fuji lenses for the X-H1 do. Also there seems to be a slightly snobbish attitude (though I don't think it's intentional) when it comes to comparing full-frame to APS-C cameras.
    Don't get me wrong the A7III is a fantastic camera and if I were a full time professional photographer then I would pick the A7III over the Fuji in a heartbeat. But like 99.9% of the people who watch photography videos on RUclips I'm not (though I really would like to be). I've seen so many people buy the latest full-frame camera only to then realise that it's completely the wrong camera for their needs.
    Needs that's what I'd like to see a video about, matching the right camera for the right needs & budget. Budget thats another topic thats glossed over in many of these types of videos on RUclips. My overall budget when I looked at the A7III V the X-H1 was what can I get for my budget (£3K sterling, just under $4K), this is why in the end the X-H1 won I could get more for my money.
    So I would say stop comparing cameras & start looking at who they are aimed at.

    Tony. Fair enough review I think. But I don't quite follow the criticism that you cannot get a 600mm F4 lens. You can get a 100 to 400mm lens and, as you have pointed out, because of the 1.5 crop factor, this is roughly equivalent to a 600mm lens on a full frame camera. Not quite as fast or sharp, but same effective magnification, and much lighter. Priorities differ, but for me the reduced weight for the same magnification is an advantage, not a disadvantage. But I am not a professional.
    Also, I think you over emphasize the problems with battery life. A DSLR will of course have a longer battery life, but I have shot time lapses on my X-T20, taking pictures every 5 seconds, with high performance on, and the LCD switched on, and got more than 2 hours from a fully charged battery. I don't find it a huge problem to change the battery every 2 hours even if I was taking a picture every 5 seconds (which I rarely do). I usually go out with three batteries and have never flattened all of them in one day. Again, for me, the reduction in weight is more important than a long battery life.

    I got into the fugi because the glasses are so much cheaper and the difference between a full frame and crop censor is not that obvious especially if you are using flash.
    The only downside between fugi and sony is the auto focus.
    Fugi has a great auto focus if you know how to use it.
    But if you dont want yourself to complicate on auto focus just go with the sony. AF-C eye auto focus will take care of everything

    There are some real bad comments made in this video. Maybe call it just not knowing, but some statements are just way wrong. Tony there are 85 and 70-200 equivalents. The 56 1.2 and the 50-140 2.8 which is a stabilized lens. I also have to say FujiFlim support is Grade A. Even for there X series cameras. I am a long time Canon shooter. I have been shooting Canon since the age of 11. Owning a 1DX now and 14 L lenses later I have picked up a X-H1. I am not one bit disappointed. Fuji’s colors and tones are amazing. I am not a fan boy of Fuji. I have owned this system for about 2 months. I am unsure if you are really knowledgeable on the system or if your guessing. The shooting experience is every bit as important as the final image result to many people. I do not understand why most (other than Fuji and Leica, and of course Hasselblad) manufacturers have not figured this out. If Canon made a well designed body out of machined aluminum and stuck several dials on the top (like the Fuji) and then included the 80D sensor, then sold it for four grand, people would buy it.

      I agree somewhat. I still use my 5D mark IV over my a7III for most of my shooting because the Canon interface is much more familiar to me. But people GUSH over ergonomics, to the point that THAT will sell a camera way above ultimate image quality, which is why people spend 6-7 thousand on a Leica. Oh, and my 5D cannot track anywhere NEAR what my Sony can (but I still love the Canon).

    Sorry, but I find this an insincere "review" of the Fujifilm X-H1, in that Mr Northrup starts the video with the highlights of the X-H1 but quickly moves into how the Sony A7iii is a much better deal for Nikon/Canon DSLR system switchers, rather than the X-H1. "Contrasting the Fujifilm X-H1 as a poor choice over the Sony A7iii at the same price point", would be an honest title for this video. In the end, for me, this video invalidates itself as an honest review, moving it into distasteful bait-and-switch territory. The Fujifilm and Sony are both good systems, depending on your needs. I understand that, for a camera designed by marketers - and promoted by these kinds of "reviews" - appealing to the benefits of your product over a competitor make sense. But this is not a review video for the Fujifilm X-H1, far from it. I leave this video impressed with the high production values, and I appreciate the presenter's passion for comparing camera systems, but I'm somewhat soured by the subtle marketing agenda to promote the latest Sony camera over a competitor sitting at the same price point.

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  6 лет назад +4

      How could I review the X-H1 and not mention the a7 III? They're mirrorless cameras at almost exactly the same price point. What exactly do you think was dishonest about this review? Be specific.
      Let me be clear: Sony has no say over the content of our videos. I have never accepted money or free gear from any camera or lens manufacturer. And because it's a common question, all camera manufacturers have press events, and we've been to most of them. Fuji literally flies photography journalists all over the world, just like other camera manufacturers.

    • @therapeuticenergyhealing
      @therapeuticenergyhealing 6 лет назад +4

      Be specific? Fair enough. Well, you are 2 mins into the "review" and then you immediately transition into praising a full-frame camera option (as you well know, the Fujifilm X-HI is an APSC sensor) from a competitor company, apparently indicating a personal bias towards the Sony a7iii. Of course, they are at about the same price point, but the Sony model is not announced as the focus of your review. So, as a viewer, I feel cheated of the time spent on your full assessment of the X-H1 (2 mins) when it is followed by another 9 minutes telling me the Sony a7iii is a much better choice. I'm also feeling the loss of your initial enthusiasm towards the camera, as a photographer, because suddenly you are focusing more on the benefits of the Sony competitor. To be clear, I own and shoot both systems (albeit Sony A-mount, not E-mount), and for me both systems have different strengths. For nature and architecture, I go full-frame Sony, but for run-and-gun travel/street shooting, I usually go Fujifilm X-T2. I do appreciate your content, Mr Northrup, but being more clear on your intention (specifically, in this video, that the Sony a7iii is a better choice for DSLR switchers from Canon and Nikon, than the X-H1) helps me, as your viewer, decide up front if I should spend 11 mins watching your video review. If I want a Sony a7iii review, that is where I would go, but not to a Fujifilm X-H1 review that only has 2 mins of content.

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  6 лет назад +1

      Well, it's not an issue for you. For us it becomes a particularly big issue when we travel, because we travel with 3 Fuji batteries, and I have to keep the two extras on me, which means I can't just walk around with a camera on a strap, but I have to carry a bag, too. Then, every night at the hotel, I have to plug in the first battery, wait for it to charge, and then swap it out with the second battery... wait for that to charge, and then swap out the third battery. Inevitably during travel I'll forget to charge or fall asleep after putting the first battery on, and then I won't have enough batteries for the next day.
      We also live in a cold climate, where the battery life can be less than 1/2 the normal in the winter.
      If you're perfect, and you always remember to bring extra batteries and you never forget to charge a battery, than it's fine. But I'm quite human, and I'd rather not fuss with multiple batteries.

    • @PJ-ku5lp
      @PJ-ku5lp 6 лет назад +1

      You need to lose the skinny jeans, these batteries fit in normal sized pockets pretty easily. :)
      And you can charge the other batteries in the grip, or use the wall charger.. don't act like you don't bring an electronics accessory bag with for your phones and laptop when you travel.
      Seriously though, I at first was like WTF didn't they use the bigger grip as space for a new battery. An interview I saw said they felt people with existing Fuji hardware would appreciate not having to buy all new batteries when they add this camera to their bag. From that angle, it actually makes some logical sense. I mean it's absolutely dumb to not have developed a new bigger battery for a power-hungry IBIS, and they had to realize that, so right or wrong in some people's eyes, it seems like it was a conscious decision with the customer in mind.
      Well, that or I just drank too much of the kool-aid today. :)

I considered Fuji many times, and if the XT2 had IBIS I might of went for it, but in the end, I didn't want to go from a full frame sensor down to an apse sensor, and coming from a 5Dlll, I wanted to try a high MP camera, so I bought the A7r lll, and I have no regrets, but I still haven't parted with my Canon gear yet, most of my lenses work good with the mc-11 adapter, witch is also a benefit to Sony over Fuji, and the 70/200 f2.8 IS ll L witch has issues on the Sony, I can still use on my 5Dlll along with my 2x extender, I have bought 3 Sony lenses, but I am holding back going all in and buying more, because I am curious about what Nikon and Canon FF mirrorless is going to be like, and even though I own Canon mount glass, I am actually more interested to see what Nikon comes out with, because my first DSLR was a Nikon, so I am rooting for them, and also because Canon always holds back technology, so I am not expecting much from them,
    but I think both companies are really late in the game, and already lost thousands of long time customers to Sony, and Nikon or Canon would really have to come out with something amazing to make me switch back. but if it did everything as good as whatever Sony is out at the same time, plus it maybe looked twice as good, I would be tempted,

      well said.. i own a 5dm3 and 6d.. sold the 6d and picked up the a7iii . Kept all my canon glass and seeing what the future olds. I really don't like using hte 5dm3 anymore compared to the a7iii .

    I'm a Fuji shooter, and I completely agree with all your points. My biggest frustration is that the x-trans sensor just does not deliver any advantage in any area that Fuji claim it should do, and I'm forced to use additional applications to convert their raw files before importing in to LR, just so I can get more detail.
    It's most interesting to me that DXO still have not reviewed Fuji glass. They used to say it's because of the x-trans sensor, but there are many Fuji x bodies with a bayer sensor so I don't see what the hold back is (X-A1, X-A2, X-A3, X-A5 and the X-T100 all have Bayer sensors (some 16mp, some 24mp). Interestingly also, if you compare the X-A2, X-T1, X-A3 and X-T2 on dpreview's studio scene comparison tool, you can clearly see the Bayer sensor cameras deliver far better results.
    I wish they would make a pro grade body with a Bayer sensor. X-B1?

    I guess that it is like Apple (Fuji) vs PC( Sony). The Story will go on. It is apparent that you like Sony. I have both Fuji Xt2 and Sony A6500. Now, A6500 Is only used to video tape my kid concert. I love to take pictures with XT2.

      If you check sdp.io/whichcamera, you'll see we recommend Fuji cameras over the a6500. We never recommended the a6500 or any Sony camera prior to the release of the a9 with its bigger battery.

      I never see this comparison the same way, but a lot of people make it. Apple products are all about the upgrade, every year the new model comes out to an absurd amount of hype, and people just can't wait to throw the old one away, not upgrade it.

    This is next level plug-in advertising at the end of the review. If you’re going to do that then you have to break down all the features and user experience. Compare Fujinon lenses vs Sony etc. Which camera are you reviewing again?

      Tony & Chelsea Northrup if you go to 6:05 like he’s saying it’s completely out of context. If people would like to review this they’ll need to start the video around 5:50 so that the comment doesn’t lose context. It’s all good, trolls will be trolls.

I'm also not a pro though. Also I love the 2-3 times a year xmas gifts we get with firmware updates. 4k60 here we come!

      yep, I'm using it in that video. It's equivalent to a 70-200 f/4 on a full-frame camera. If you're interested in learning about equivalency, check sdp.io/crop, or just google 'full frame equivalency'. Here's a calculator: mmcalc.com/

      Tony & Chelsea Northrup Here’s a question I really need answered lol ? Please any input would help so much ! My laptop, canon 6Dii, 24-70 2.8 L, 70-200 2.8 L, 50mm 1.8, and my 85mm stolen ! I have 5 jobs spanning over two weeks.. I have literally exactly $4,500 to spend ohh and my two alien bee strobes STOLEN ! I’m in major pinch and everything I worked so hard for all has been ripped from my hands and I gave a maximum of $4,500 to get a set up. I’m beyond myself on what to do considering I’ve called over 50-60 shops in California to pick up a Sony a7iii.

      Tony & Chelsea Northrup it does effect DOF. However it’s still gathering the same light as 2.8 is giving. So it is in fact a 2.8 for gathering light. So to say that this lens is a 70-200 F/4 is not correct.

  • @problemat1que
    @problemat1que 6 лет назад

    Don't forget the price of lenses. The video is correct for someone looking for the highest quality period where money is no object. Most of us make compromises for cost reasons and in that world, the Fuji APS-C system delivers great quality at a nice price precisely because they don't have a FF upgrade path. You won't find a complete set of high quality glass specifically designed for APS-C in other brands, which forces quality-minded customers to upgrade to their much more expensive FF systems. I like the portability and the price better with Fuji - which is why I shoot X-T20 with primes, and occasionally the 18-55 F2.8-4 zoom (not X-T2 or H1 with 16-55 F2.8 as shown) - the best compromise between IQ, price, and portability I know.

    Hi Tony ;)
    As a Fuji lover i must say that it was good to see you not holding back, making this review.
    I sometimes feel that you guys are too....lolol... lets say.. "too Canadian" ..
    This was, hands down.. one of the best (and quickest) reviews i've seen from you guys lately.
    And yes, i am with you, also, when you say that Fuji should step up, and put out some f1.8 fast glass..sigma&tamron-style.. asap.
    I was sure the X-H1 was going to be my next camera.
    Turns out.. the very poor battery and the dissapointing ergonomics&handling made me go to the Sony A7III .
    PS: I still keep my X-T20 with the Fantastic 16mm f1.4.. and the solid pancake lens.
    PS2 : And, if you can.. do a review on their XF 80mm f2.8 macro lens. Its brilliant !

      You're in the same boat as me :) I have the A7Riii for IQ and battery life and ISO performance, but I'm still keeping my X-T20 with that beautify 16mm lens for the experience of shooting.

    • @V4D2
      @V4D2 6 лет назад

      K. Adam Christensen hehe, yeh, i love that lens.
      And..cropped in a tiny bit, it makes a beautiful 35mm.
      Have you got the 35mm Zeiss?
      Were you shooting DSLRs before owning that great mirrorless combo?
      (I wish I had the 7RIII. I've got the D800E. Awesome ergonomics. Slow camera, though.)
      What other glass do u own?

    • @shifteleven
      @shifteleven 6 лет назад

      V4D2 I got the 55, 24-105, and Zeiss 35mm f2.8 for the small profile. Oh, and the 100mm stf 2.8. I played around with the 25mm batis too - so very close to the 16mm look, but the build of the 16mm is so much better.
      I started in film with a Nikon and had all the old Nikkor lenses that I now can use on the Sony. I did switch to Canon for a little bit but hated it because I didn't know about crop factor at the time (why are these lenses so much closer? Lol).

    • @V4D2
      @V4D2 6 лет назад

      hehehe..
      There's a lot to be said about crop factor.
      When one uses an 50mm on a crop camera.. its not the same as shooting with a 75mm on a FF body. It's just NOT the same.
      That's why i am waiting for Tamron to release a stabilized 135mm f1.8 or f2 .. and haven't gone for the 90mm f2 Fuji..although it is a pretty solid lens.
      (it's a pity that it doesn't feat OIS. I would buy it if it did.)
      Are You using the old Nikon glass with the Sony?
      I've got the 35, 50, 60macro and 85 D series Nikons and i've got one of those dumb adapters for my Fuji.
      It works great, specially with the 60mm f2.8D macro with the focus peaking.
      I'm curious to trying them on the A7III body , with the IBIS.
      Which old Nikkors do you own, then ?

    Used to listen to this guy but it's pretty clear he has lost the ball lately. By all means fuji x-h1 is not a perfect camera and sony a7iii looks like a brilliant piece of kit but some of the comments are completely false. Cheap and plasticky? Are you serious? Solid, magnesium body reinforced 25% more than the xt2.. Too sharp lenses? That's a first. The lenses are top notch in all aspects and they give you all the dof you need. Don't be ridiculous. Have you ever tested 56mm f1. 2? So what if it's f1. 8 dof equivalent to ff? In some cases it's even preferable. For your consideration fuji lenses are designed to outperform a 40mpx sensor so they are future proof as well. Battery life? Yes they are of limited capacity but i can shoot a 13hour wedding with 5-6 batteries. IBIS compared to a sony a7iii? Yeah right, let's not get there. I would gladly sacrifice 1-1,5 stops of iso and have a brilliant shooting experience and fuji colours. Who shoots iso one gazillion anyways?? Hard stops for ss dial? That's your problem now? Fuji gives a choice. Don't like hard stops, put it on T and turn the fuckin dial. Big deal. There is a reason fuji consumers are fanatics yes, cause of youtubers like you telling half the truth.

    Thanks Tony! I was about to upgrade my old Canon T3i to a 5D Mark IV. And Jared Polin made me turn my head to the Sony A7RIII. But then, I was again in between choosing a FujiFilm or the Sony FF camera. And now you've helped me make my mind and go with sony's camera. Specially because I already have an A6000 and I can use the same lenses I already have, which makes my switching from Canon to Sony a little less expensive than it would be if I moved from canon to fuji.

      Tony & Chelsea Northrup oh I fully agree, but on the other hand Fuji loves to make people think that their x-trans sensor has low light capabilities almost like a full frame camera.
      And that in fact is a lie to the nomal customer.
      Max Yuryev has worked that out greatly.
      But your review is also very honest👍.

      El Duderinho personal experience: i take better high iso photos with my xt2 than i used to with my nikon d700 ff. I easily go to 12800 on xt2 even if you tell me it is really 6400. Besides, the really well dampened shutter and no mirror slap allows me to also use slower ss. I am a happy camper with it.
