  • It's hard to find a good deal on an older used Fuji camera these days - a lot of them come with a hype tax. (granted, they are good, so there's that.) But that's not the case with the Fujifilm XH1. In fact, it may actually be undervalued and the best bang-for-your-buck Fujifilm X camera you can buy today.

Hmm, that's interesting your perception of hybrid. From my perspective as a reviewer - and recipient of many presentations! - the manufacturers genuinely mean hybrid to be equally suitable for both photo and video. In Fujifilm's World, it also means switching the shutter speed dial for a PASM dial and always having a fully articulated screen. This is why the X-S is a hybrid and the X-T is not. In fact the X-S20 really ought to be branded as an X-H20 but there's a lot of hate for the X-H series as it departs from Fujifilm's core audience of photo-oriented products. This and the fact the X-H1 was priced and pitched as a flagship DESPITE being one of the last to feature that generation of sensor is all why it's one of the more affordable recent models. Note how the subsequent X-H2 was the FIRST to receive the latest sensor, as you'd expect for a flagship, but even then its sales are well below their more popular X-T series. But one of the joys of the X-system is the sheer choice of bodies out there.

  • @DwayneFuhlhage
    @DwayneFuhlhage 15 дней назад +13

The X-H1 was my daily driver since the year it came out. It is versatile. In the same weekend, I would shoot street events, a cross country meet, a marching band festival, and then a car show. I bought a used one as a backup. Anyway, thanks for driving up the prices of my favorite Fujifilm body ;-)

  • @macccu

I love X-H1 shutter button - it's so buttery smooth I don't want go bo back to normal ones. However it is a bit bulky camera to carry around everyday or take on vacations. It also went like 1.5x in price since I've picked up my used one few years ago lol.

Since I already have the X-T2, I don’t see a reason to get the H1, but everything I’ve seen/read points to it being maybe Fuji’s most underrated camera. The X-T3 overshadowed it really quickly and I think to a lot of people it seemed suddenly dead in the water. Now that the X-H line has gone the PASM route with an articulating screen, this is probably the only way to get the X-T style controls with that deep grip and tilt screen.

The X-H1 is a tank: mine has been through subzero temperatures to shoot the Northern Lights, been pelted with snowstorms and downpours, and it has never let me down (AF aside). It's also easy to handle with thick gloves, which isn't true for any of the other Fuji lines.

Great video. I had an X-H1 as an upgrade from my first Fuji (X-E2S), and it was an absolute beast of a camera. I think I got mine for the same price you did from Precision in Austin after some guy sold 3 of them, and it was like new and with the grip as well. Great camera if you can get one, and a really nice example of their more DSLR-style offerings before they moved the H series to a PASM control scheme. I've moved to Pentax (K3iii and K10D), largely because of the viewfinder but also because of the rendering, but for those looking for a solid Fuji camera to get into it, this is about as good as you can get for a good price.

I've used an X-H1 for the past year as my main camera and it's great. One thing to add is its shutter release - the most sensitive button I've ever used. It took a few days to adjust to it but now I love it. I wanted an upgrade from older Fuji cameras I had been using and yes, while prices for other Fuji cameras have soared to ridiculous heights, an X-H1 in very good condition was available for just over $600. A time or two I have missed the exposure compensation dial, but the LCD screen is nice. And the viewfinder is big and bright, which is great for my 50-something vision. I am very pleased with the X-H1.

  • @evandub7385

After owning an X-H1 for 5 years I completely agree that it is overlooked! The X-T3 came out with a new sensor only 6 months after which effectively made the X-H1 obsolete in a new product sense, but on the used market it is ideal for people who want to have a film-like experience while having the modern digital conveniences of sharing photos with a mobile app, charging battery by mini-USB, etc. The handling on the X-H1 is what I like the most, the grip is fantastic and balances well with big and small lenses; every time I hand it to someone they remark on how good the grip is! The autofocus and battery life are the 2 things that let me down with it, and hilariously enough I actually shoot manual focus on it most of the time to compensate for both of those things, but I like to shoot that way anyways where I am in full control. Overall I love mine and am collecting more glass for it instead of looking for a new body.

I love the X-H1, and I have been beating mine up for three years. As someone who only uses manual lenses, the one thing that infuriates me about this camera is being limited to only two custom manual focal length presets. The built-in presets are for lengths I rarely use, so when I change to a lens that is not stored in one of the two custom presets, I have to waste time changing the preset. It's so annoying that I'm actually considering buying an x-t4, just to have extra slots.
To clarify why this matters: the in-body stabilization relies on the focal length data to accurately compensate for motion. Without IBIS turned on, it does not matter at all, aside from having the metadata in your files.

    Thank you for this video.
I recently purchased a XH1. I didn’t look for it. It sort of happened. Was on Craigslist and found the XH1 for sale. What interested me was one Fuji and a 2nd nonFuji lens packed with the body. The lens value almost equaled the price of the body. I purchased the battery grip from MPB and the total was the same as you paid.
I’m warming up to this body slowly. I do street photography and value small size plus light weight. This body is large and heavy. Read that as chunky. IBIS. Good video features. The ergos. The solid grip. The tilt screen. As I’m a photographer that’s great. To be fair, because of the video functionality, the screen should have been a flip screen. The top plate LCD. Of course, the image quality. A lot to like.
Much has been written about the timing of the XH1 release. All true. The XH1 was buggy when it was released. With the firmware updates this is a better performer now. The TikTok influencers have caused Fuji bodies to demand a premium. I hate that. Try accessing a X100V/VI in particular. Also the XE and XT bodies. You are right. One of the few Fuji bodies without a premium is the XH1.
A minor complaint. The LCD top plate screen. It can’t be turned off. I once left the battery in the camera for several days and the battery was drained. Lesson learned. Take the battery out of this body when not in use.

I owned the X-H1 about 5 years ago. It was a fantastic camera but too big for me when it came to full days of street and travel photography. I purchased the X-Pro3 when it first came out as a replacement. That said, this camera is undervalued largely because of RUclips and Fujifilm waiting too long to release an update to the camera.
It took too long for the X-H2 to be released in the same way it’s taking too long for the X-Pro4 to be released. I bought the LUMIX S5II instead of the X-H2 because the S5II is a much better camera for hybrid work and it does both photos and videos equally well. I have a few friends with the X-H1 and they’re never selling it. They use it regularly and are content with the quality of work they get from it.
So to your point, and excellent buy in 2024.

Totally agree with this - I snagged an X-H2 back in covid for £400 GBP boxed, which was an insane deal given that it cost multiple times that amount when new just a year beforehand. I much prefer the grip to the X-T2 and the IBIS is brilliant. I also love that it retains the manual controls like the X-T line, which is sadly gone from the X-H2.
On the display on the top, it uses a Memory in Pixel type display. Not e-ink as it uses tech closer to a more traditional LCD, but it has memory for each pixel (hence the name), allowing it to retain the image on the screen without needing to refresh, making it very low power. It's also transflective, making it super clear in bright sunlight, or able to be backlit. Very cool tech that is also used in other products such as fitness watches.

The X-H1 had the misfortune of being released at the same time as the Sony A7III, which was a comparably speced full frame camera for the same price. Fuji also released the X-T3 (with a new sensor, but no IBIS) at a lower price less than a year later. So it's own camera was competing with it. I got mine new for a steal and still have and use it. I liked it better than the X-T3.

The XH-1 I love the idea of, I would totally get one If I had disposable income. I love how they had the controls vs the xh2 and how the x-trans 2 feels. I already have an X-E3 with one gen newer x-trans, I use a lot of manual glass so the small viewfinder and static back lcd is more difficult. I need something with better video capabilities and AF for filming myself first

Even after upgrading, the XH1's still probably my favorite camera i've ever used, I shot sports on it for a while and besides it chewing through 5 batteries for a football game, it's a really solid all round camera for action, portraits, slapping vintage glass on it, automotive. It has the deep grip that blends the professional feel I was used to coming from Canon with the style and dials of Fujifilm. Got mine with a grip for a similar price and definitely got more than my money's worth even in 2022-23.

A mixture of photo and video, I ended up completely emptying 3 for sure, and was working on the last two around overtime. The XH2 is definitely a bit better on battery life even though I don't have a grip and can usually get one and a half (One full game plus pregaming both, and the half of the second game) with around 15% leftover for basketball games off a single battery.

Now I have a full frame mirrorless camera with huge lenses that stays at home 🤣 But regarding the used prices of the XH1, my hunch is that it's not a "hyped" camera. Doesn't look much like a film SLR unlike the other models and the video thing too but it only had minor differences over the XT2 in terms of video. While I don't shoot Fuji anymore, I have heard the XH2 are quite nice.

I LOVE the X-H1. And I really don't understand why it's so cheap. For a moment, even the X-T2 (the camera it's basically based on) was more expensive !
I used an X-H1 for a little bit more than a year, which I paired with an X-T2 for event photography and some other gigs, like some airshows, sports events and of coulse my personal work. I sold it last december (and kept the X-T2) because it wasn't practical for me to keep Fujifilm as my main camera system : lenses were too expensive, and most of my lens catalogue was Nikon F (that I previously used with some DSLRs that I kept, like my old trusty D700). Using F-Mount glass on Fujifilm just wasn't practical : there is only one adapter that allows for autofocus and it's not reliable.
I found myself in need of long lenses like a 100-400 or something of the sort, and I could simply NOT afford a lens in X mount with that much reach. So I sold the X-H1 and most of my Fuji lenses, kept the X-T2 + my 35mm f2 + my lens adapters and got myself a Nikon Z6 for about the same price I sold my X-H1 (sold it with the grip for 650€, bought my Z6 for under 700)
But if I'm being honest, if I could have bought the long lenses I needed, or if adapted F-mount was practical to use on X mount, I would have NEVER sold that camera. It was pretty much perfect for my use case and my preferences as far as a camera goes : the screen design is basically my favourite implementation of an articulating screen, the EVF is exceptionally good, the grip of the camera is nice, it has dual slots, the best vertical add-on grip implementation I've seen in any camera, the ability to control the camera ENTIRELY with just the two control dials (ISO+aperture on the front dial, shutter speed on the back dial, press the front dial to cycle between ISO and aperture), and the ability to revert back to a retro approach in an instant is you ever want to slow down and use the top retro dials. It also has the best implementation of a top diaplay I've seen (aka completely customizable, with the ability to show different things depending if you're in video or photo mode), whisper quiet shutter that made electronic shutter feel obsolete, fast enough burst rate (11fps is no slouch), as well a really nice video camera, and really nice video features to go with it (front/back tally lights, F-Log, nice IBIS to name a few). By the way, if you can't really color grade but still want the flexibility of F-Log : Fujifilm makes a free LUT for X-Trans III cameras that had F-Log (so just X-T2 and X-H1), and it't really really good. I used it a lot for profesionnal video work and it always delivered even though I'm absolute garbage at color grading (I really only started including videos in my profesionnal camera use last year). You can convert the Log into BT.709 with the LUT, or use their "Eterna" LUT, which is what I use personally. It's as simple as double clickin on the thing in DaVinci, make basic adjustments thereafter. Works really well for noobs for sure. If you don't want to do that, the Eterna film sim is the one that will keep the most dynamic range.
And then there is the sensor... there is a reason why I didn't sell my X-T2 as well... this is the best dang X-Trans sensor to date, and you can come fight me ! It has the nice tones of the X-Trans 1 without going in the cliché retro look of the X-trans II and the sterile colors of the X-Trans IV and V. And the autofocus performance is MORE than enough for pretty much anything if you use that camera like a DSLR (had no problems shooting sports and wildlife as long as I stayed within the phase detect points, used zone focusing and trained myself to track subjects better).
This is by far the most uderrated Fujifilm camera, the cheapest one you can buy to get a Fuji with IBIS, and this might go down as the ONLY Fujifilm camera to ever have a comfortable grip AND the ability to use retro dials if you want to.
I'm not disspointed I bought a Z6, this camera is in a whole other world by itself (and also super underrated if you want my opinion about it), but the X-H1 is clearly in my top 5 cameras ever made...and it's not 5th.
Super happy that you could see the qualities of that camera that seems to be brushed off by many because it doesn't look retro enough.

X-H1 was my favorite Fujifilm. Mainly because of how you could program both control dials separate from whether or not the lens attached had an aperture dial or not. Then add up the rest of what is great about it. That said, Fujifilm are not my favorite cameras to use. It's like using a language that doesn't let you express how you are. But it's their best one, followed by the XE2 and XPRO1

  • @pres589
    @pres589 15 дней назад

I really like the X-H1. I really wish they had made the X-mount, and this camera, full-frame. I picked up a Nikon Z5 about a year after my X-H1 (which I still have) because I wanted my adapted 35mm lenses to provide the same field of view and the related depth of field differences etc. And it's just.... not as nice as the X-H1. I am probably going to keep the X-H1 around for video after I pick up a really wide zoom lens.
I absolutely love the top deck dials for ISO and exposure speed, especially the "L" and "H" positions on the ISO dial. Shooting with adapted glass with this camera is so nice and I get nicely exposed shots basically every time. AF is great as well (for my one native X-mount lens). Just an awesome package all around.
