Can't wait for your full review. Your reviews are always the best on RUclips - professional, straight to the point... just the way all reviews should be.
I enjoy your educated reviews. I always feel a bit nostalgic when watching your videos. I grew up in the 1980'S when videos were informative. You sir, make great videos!
That's very kind of you to say - in the 1980's I worked at TVOntario, our provincial educational broadcaster. I guess some of that ethic stays with me. Thanks for taking the time to comment, appreciated.
I usually don’t have high hopes for comparison videos on youtube, but I was pleasantly surprised by this one! Detailed without getting too long. Very informative! Well done! The X-H1 looks like it’s an interesting camera. I won’t get it, because I like the compact style of my X-T2, but I could see some of the improvements coming to the X-T3, mainly wifi, bluetooth and touchscreen. I also saw a few things which I think will find it’s way into the X-T2 and X-Pro2 with firmware updates.
How kind of you to say, and thanks for taking the time to comment. Let's see what trickles down - or gets into the next version of other models in the lineup.
HI,Maarten. Thank you for the in-depth review. This is the best review I have watched so far on RUclips since yesterday. I am currently using my X-T2 which I had last year, together with my classic X-Pro1 to back-up with. I am not into shooting videos (actually I haven't used my X-T2 to shoot videos before) so I think I will not upgrade yet my X-T2. But given the specs, X-H1 will be a hit for sure!
Another great video! I can add one confirmation - about the sequential memory card option, that it does have completely seamless transfer from the first card to the second when the first one is full (you did mention this on the video but as a question rather than a statement). I heard confirmation of the seamless nature of the transfer via a comment from 'Fuji Guy Billy' (who I believe is Canada-based).
Always a pleasure to watch your videos, Maarten! As a non-english (Norwegian) native, I have to stop, rewind and chimp for a second, sometimes a third time, du digest the subtle differences here. But, it gave me a quick established base of knowledge about the differences of these two good cameras. Thank you, very much!
Maarten Heilbron yeah, im thinking of getting it with the 56mm f1.2. Im loving fujis colour science and the newer bigger body with the top display. Also the 5 axis stability would be handy when i so event/fashion shoots. I feel that the H1 is a great street camera too.
Excellent review Maarten, one of the best I've seen to date. Personally I sold my X-T2 to get the H1 because it has IBIS. As we get older, IBIS is so much more important. Looking forward to using it with the awesome XF16-55 f2.8 which does not have OSS. Second good reason to upgrade to H1 is the better grip and size. The X-T2 was just a little too small for large hands, the H1 should be just right. Looking forward to your further review of the H1.
Thanks for the comparison Maarten - excellent as always. I was a huge fan of the XT-2 but it had a few bugs that were deal-breakers for me. I'm hoping you might be able to let me know if they exist in the X-H1 as well. Primarily it had to do with the way the camera changed exposure in video. For example, if you had the X-T2 set to auto ISO and filmed in a scene that changed light, the exposure change in video was 'stepped' (I believe it did this with aperture, too). Also when you zoomed in with a zoom lens, the exposure would jump around as you zoomed. I tested this and saw it with the 18-55mm kit lens, the 10-24 f4, and the 50-140 f/2.8 lenses. Were you able to test whether the X-H1 fixed this exposure stepping issue (I'm not sure what to call it, and I haven't really seen many people address it). If so, I may finally drop Sony for good and move over to Fuji, which would make me very happy :). Thanks again!
It is an annoyance, but sometimes the annoyance offsets the value of using AutoISO when there is a dramatic lighting transition in a scene. And while I'm annoyed, and it's clearly obvious to me - most viewers are not sensitive to these kinds of issues.
Goodness Maarten, that's a lot of camera in all senses! If I am to buy one after your full review, I shall have to get to work on those wrist strengthening exercises... 😁
Very informative video - detailed and to the point. I’m in two minds about this camera. I moved from Nikon because of the size and weight and now Fuji are creeping in that direction... but as someone who is doing more video these days those features are tempting 🤔
Thank you, Maarten. As always, your reviews are very useful. I have an X-T2, but given that I don't do video, I will pass. What seems most interesting to me is the in camera stabilization. That should allow to keep ISOs a bit lower in low light.
Always my pleasure, thanks for the kind words. And it's nice to hear from someone who has realistic expectations for IBIS - too many seem to expect it to replace a gimbal for video.
I love watching your videos --- any chance of doing a full detailed tutorial on the X-H1, including your preferred settings for various photo and video scenarios? Thanks for what you do.
Your videos are always the same... I mean, always well done, very informative and sooooooo useful ! Thanks again for your time. Very appreciated. Regards.
Well done, you do the recording and she does the snow clearing :-). By the way, regarding the menu returning to the top level every time, if it’s like the XT2, when you have the personalized menu configured you can have it set to go to your personal menu every time you enter the menu again.
Thanks for the kind words - we have a very equal sharing of responsibilities. Yes, but I can't get format on the personalized menu. Why can't this just be an option - to return to the last setting?
Wow. What a beautiful Camera with so many settings it will be a job just trying to learn this Fujifilm X-H1 Camera System! Thank you for the breakdown!
Great and super quick review! What’s the weight of the camera fully loaded w the grip? And the 18-55 lens? I’m done w canon 6d and the 24-70 Looking to make the h1 into a wedding camera.
Sorry, I didn't add all that up - but I will for the full review. In the meantime, pretty sure you'll find the details on Fuji's specifications for those things.
Ahhh, misunderstood the sentence in the video, sorry. So: Isn't this quite normal instead of easter egg? E.g. on my D500 or D850: if I set the camera to bracketing, choose 3, 5, 7, whatever as bracket count, set to self-timer, it will take automatically all images set for bracketing. On electronic shutter (only on the D850, not available on D500) - Nikon calls it "Silent Shutter" - this enables you to shoot vibration free bracketed images without the need of a remote release.
Most cameras have this as an explicit setting - on the Fuji it magically happens when you combine the two. Bracket and client shutter (both of which are supported on the X-H1) are different features. On the Nikon these features are set with custom c3 settings, there is no similar feature on the X-H1.
I always enjoy your videos - nice work! As primarily a still shooter I only see one major advantage of this camera over the XT-2: IBIS. Hoping Fuji brings IBIS to the XT-3. Also, the loss of the dedicated exposure compensation dial is reason enough to pass on this body for me; one of the main reasons I shoot Fuji is their dedicated mechanical dials for controlling exposure. All that said, this looks like a great body for those who are serious about video.
I appreciate the kind words, thank you. I would not bet on IBIS in an upcoming X-Tn model. As I rarely to never use the exposure compensation dial (it's just to easy to adjust the setting I want on the X-T2) I will not miss it. I think many believe that exposure compensation is a magic fourth exposure setting - it's not. So if I'm not getting the right exposure, I want to choose if it's the shutter speed or the ISO that's being adjusted.
Looking forward to your X-H1 in-depth review Maarten. I would be grateful if you could ask Fujifilm if & when they will address the video recording stopping when one battery is depleted but still having two charged batteries. I shoot concerts. Kind regards
A format option has not been added to the favorites menu but it can be easily activated without going in the menu by holding down the trash button for a second and then pressing the rear control dial (on X-T2, probably on X-H1 too). I think the flicker reduction option can only be changed when the electronic shutter is enabled because it isn't needed for the mechanical shutter.
Great tip - thanks, but really, why can't that be on my menu? No, in fact the manual clearly states that the flicker reductions works on with the mechanical shutter (and I tried both).
Maarten, on the X-t2 and X-t20 (and maybe the H1) there’s no need to put “format” on the “my menu.” Just hold down the “garbage” button for two seconds and then push in the rear command dial.
One of the reasons I moved from Nikon to Fuji is because of size and portability, hope Fuji is not moving in the wrong direction...an XT2 with in-body image stabilization would be perfect
I believe flicker reduction is for video mode 7:43 Shutter speed probably locks at double the frames per second in video mode or it should for the 180 degree shutter rule. The video screen touch options feel like it works like the Sony A6500
That’s not what the manual says. It’s for stills, to match the shutter release to the brightest point in the flicker cycle. Pretty sure it’s disabled in video mode.
I appreciate the kind words. This video (because the X-T2 is in it) is mostly shot with the Sony A6300 ... but here's a full "behind the scenes" peek at everything I use in video production: ruclips.net/video/1Rqvdn4koaM/видео.html
Thank you for the nice and useful video. I’m wondering if XT3 with all rumors items will be in your hand, which one do you prefer as the best camera for Photography? (Xt3 vs xh1)
Hi Maarten, thanks for the comparisons. In regards to the X-H1 touchscreen, did it have the option for touch to focus and then shoot right after that? As a landscape photographer that would be very useful for focus stacking. Would like to find out. Thanks.
The touch screen has four modes - one where a single touch does focus and snap, the second focus only, the third to only set the focus area and off. That sounds like a good use of the feature, thanks for the tip - may I use that as an example in an upcoming video?
Maarten Heilbron thank you so much for the clarification. That is a nice feature for landscape photography, especially for focus stacking. That would be great. Thanks for your hard work and time.
Thanks for the kind words. AutoISO yes (but haven't tested how smooth that is) Zebra, no (but there is a highlight function that flashes at some undetermined level).
??? I AM wearing a sombrero. :-) No mention of my eyebrows? No remarks about making my partner shovel? I wonder why I bother to include cameras in my videos at all. Thanks for the chuckle.
Hi Maaten. Thank you for the video. My question. Before making the move to my XT-1. I was a cannon user and I liked the AL-servo + back button focus combination. How does the X-H1 AF (AL Servo) + AF-ON experience compare with cannon and its XT-precursors
Always my pleasure, thank your the kind words. Yes, you can configure the X-H1 (and X-T2) to use one of the buttons on the upper back panel as AF-On (it's all customizable) for back focus. Depending on the generation of Canon you're using - you'll likely find the Fuji phase detect focus system to be faster - with a good improvement of the X-T2 over the X-T1. And more focus points.
It seems that this camera was designed to compete in the world of video makers. Which is awesome because the new cinema profile can save you so much time getting that cinema look that we all like. But for general stills shooting, I think either the XT2 or XP2 are a better option because of its size/weight and slightly better battery life. I'd like to see that new cinema profile added to the XT2 via firmware, I wonder if they'll ever do that?
Hi, xt1 user here and would like to upgrade. Torn between the xt2 and xh1. Shooting primarily stills, streetphotos and not really into videography. i love the size of the xt series but the xh1 being newer and superior is also an inviting choice. i would go for the xh1 if the size is not that much of a difference or is it really that big?
Hi, I enjoy your reviews. My question is: is the canon80d even in the ballpark with this Fuji? I if you're shooting stills using L glass is the canon even comparable or does this Fuji make the canon 80d's photo quality seem like a toy? Thanks.
Thanks for the kind words. I would prefer the Fuji, but in terms on image quality it's roughly comparable. Fuji's XF red badge lenses would be comparable to Canon's L series, but Canon does have a larger selection of lenses. While the X-H1 is clearly the more robust camera, the 80D is not a toy by any standard.
thank you Maarten - exactly the information I need :-) I'll stick with my X-T2 (which I absolutely love) and wonder if some of the stills tweaks will make it to the X-T2 via a FW update.
Fuji assures me they work together - but I think the neat thing is that it stabilizes adapted lenses. Get out that M mount adapter and those old lenses ...
I'm not a video guy but for me the most attractive feature is clearly the IBIS. That is a game changer. It makes the 16 to 55 f/2.8 and the 56 and 90 primes instantly more useable. That on it's own is worth the price IMHO. I also heard the eye piece is moveable to allow for left or right eye use and those of use you find that dead center placement involves smashing our noses into the LCD. With touchscreen I could see that being a problem. Did you find that the case?
There is certainly a benefit to IBIS for stills - in a very quick test, I was able to handhold exposures to .5 second. The IBIS, as provided in this, as in most still/video cameras, provides a very limited advantage to video shooters - you'd already have to be pretty steady. I would still use a gimbal with this camera. The only exception to this in my experience is Olympus (it's admittedly easier with a smaller sensor), where IBIS starts to be usable for video. The eye piece is symmetrical, so not designed for left/right eye specific use. It is not movable - it is removable. The touch screen can be disabled easily - but as the touchpad selection area can be changed, the nose problem is easily avoided.
I think this is a great point. I understand the 16-55 is a great lens, but I hesitate to buy it because I take a lot of indoor images in lower light conditions. Getting a bit older, not as steady. Now with IBIS, that lens becomes much more useful. And all those Primes become stabilized also.
Hi...great video..you have a soothing voice. I am a wedding photographer and already have the XT2 Looking for a second camera… That would nail focus of the faster… Do you recommend me upgrading for my second camera to this camera?
Thanks for your very kind words, appreciated. I haven't done a side by side focus speed comparison - and may not have the tools to do so accurately. Possibly CNet (Lori Grunin's reviews are excellent) or dpreview will provide that detail. I'll also include this detail in my full review. To answer the question - I don't think you'll be sorry if you add the X-H1 as a second camera.
Hi Maarten, I have the option of buying the X-t2 for cca 1100$ used and the x-h1 for about 2000$ new. Does the Ibis really help that much? I normally shoot events. Thanks.
I'm assuming video, and will observe that the stabilization, while it helps, is not anything like a tripod or a stabilizer. I'm anxious to try the Ronin S with the X-H1.
There is some benefit to having stabilization in low light settings - but in my opinion, you'd be better off with a faster lens, which will provide a much greater increase in low light performance.
Sir, could you please tell me if the XH-1 makes any jerk, as if something moves inside the camera when you turn the camera on? Mine does so every time I turn the camera on? Is it normal? Thanks!
So kind of you for the reply, I really do appreciate it! I am enjoying my XH-1,whenever I go out to take pictures. Amazing camera with Stunning picture quality!
It seems if you are primarily a stills shooter, with the possible exception of the IBIS and maybe the beefier grip, the XT2 will still be fine if not even preferred.
Hi Maarten, Greetings from the Philippines. I will buy my first camera. I will be doing mostly videos with slomo and a little bit of stills. These are my choices. I hope you give your thoughs or even suggest other camera not in the list: Sony A6300: Good slowmo, but it overheats Canon 200D / SL2: because its beginner friendly, lenses for future upgrade... and cheap Canon 800D / T7i: 2nd Canon choice Olympus E-M5ii: 5-Axis IBIS Lumix G85: 5-Axis IBIS Fujifilm X-T20: Because its a Fuji :) I am leaning towards the Olympus M5ii because it has everything I am looking for but the micro 4/3 sensor is making me hold back. I fear this might be terrible in low-light. I might be shooting dimly lit scenes and areas specially during music concerts. I will also be doing product photography for my wife. HELP PLEASE! Thanks for the Time! RAKK
If I am just starting to get into photography and I want one of the Fujifilm mirror-less cameras which of these should I go with? I would like to shoot low light photos, so it seems the H1 has the edge, but maybe the T2 is good enough for a starter?
The X-T2 is more than enough. Yes, the stabilization on the X-H1 helps marginally with low light settings under some conditions, but I would not consider this reason enough to select it over the X-T2, which is a fine camera. At the moment, although I have both, I prefer to use the X-T2 for most projects.
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. This depends on how often you're annoyed that either your ISO is too high or the shutter speed to slow. Either way, and depending on the lens and focal length, you could expect a couple of stops improvement.
Maarten Heilbron Well, there's some of the autofocusing problems that others have been having. However, more detrimental to me is the various freezes that occur. Specifically if I change the power settings right after turning on the camera. Also, video stops recording when a battery dies (with the grip, of course) and Im having inconsistent results with my settings sticking in movie mode vs S mode. As well as audio being heavily distorted through the headphone jack. Quite a few problems actually.
Oh dear .. still working with the autofocus myself, at the moment it feels the negatives are somewhat exaggerated, but. I'll check the freezing you mention, but hasn't happened to me yet (mainly shooting video). Settings seem to stick for me - but I'll keep an eye out for that. The dead battery in the grip stops video recording has been a problem for Fuji since the X-T2's grip - I do wish they'd fix that. The only workaround I have is to plug the grip in, it's OK when it's wall powered. That said, don't have the grip yet to check the headphone jack. Thanks for your helpful and detailed notes.
Is X-H1 a replacement for the X-T line - essentially a "X-T3", or will the the X-T line continue alongside the X-H? In other words, will there be a X-T3 coming out in the future? They just seem too similar, except for enhanced video features and IBIS (and some other minor tweaks).
Thank you... I kind of thought so, but I am puzzled as to what will the X-T3 bring... I was anticipating it to have all the add ons that X-H1 received... but if that will be the case then what is the point of X-H1?
thanks for your video! I've seen many reviews but it is not clear to me yet how the "hybrid" usage will be. Meaning if I'm shooting pictures and i suddenly want to record video, i have to turn the drive mode to video right? there's no direct access to video recording? will the video functionality remember aperture and speed, regardless of what I was using in pictures? If I'm in video mode can I take pictures? so how the video/picture switching process works... thanks again!
That's an interesting point - yes, you do have to move the drive dial to video mode - but then it picks up all of the video-specific settings set on the video menu. That's a feature I find quite helpful. However, it still requires (as it does with other cameras) an adjustment to the shutter speed (at least) if not also the ISO and aperture - optimal stills settings are never optimal video settings. I'll detail this in my full review.
I'm looking at changing from canon 5d mark 2 to Fujifilm. Wondering which would be better for portrait photography, the X-T2 or X-H1. Which would you recommend?
Their basic characteristics are nearly identical. Unless you need IBIS, or plan to shoot video, the X-T2 will serve your need well. Get the battery grip.
For years I have been moaning that Fuji should put a proper grip on their cameras and now that they have... I prefer the elegance of the XT2! I find the XH1 rather ugly, but I need to see it in the flesh. Very poor decision to retain the small battery. Thanks for the review.
Great info, thx. Simply amazing options for those who work out of the box. Too bad the X H1 is not a bid smaller. I'll check it out this week, as well as the Sony a6600, Fuji X-T3 and the Sony RX 100 VII as another backup. Sony can learn a lot from Fujifilm, especially in the menu system, 4K and creative options!
I like the dual sd card slots and the in body image stabilization. I don't like the 16mp sensor in the X-T1. Is this a big enough reason to upgrade. Photography is just a hobby I'm not a professional.
Lovely job MH. I don't quite get lending you the camera, then requiring that you return it so Fuji can at a future date send it back. Any software updates can be done online, I think? This cameras main competitor is the Sony A 6500, right? Anyhow, your reviews are tutorials a feat worth compensation from the camera companies.
Thanks for your kind words, appreciated, and always nice to hear from you. They had a limited number of units in Canada - and they needed them for the release events they have across the country over the next two weeks. A6500, I guess ... but I'd also be prepared to compare it to the A7Rm3 for video.
Rick, FWIW - I am personally not entirely sure the XH1 & A6500 are targeted at the same audience and therefore comparable. I know both use APS-C sensors, keeping in mind that Fuji does not manufacture a full frame camera, this would make XH1 Fuji's flagship X series camera and also targeted at professional users where the A6500 to me seems more of a consumer grade product.
I have xpro2 with 23f2 561.2. I'm looking for another camera to shoot video. At first I thought to buy a6500 and 3 more lenses. I should wait for the X-h1.
I have not seen any mention anywhere about how the IBIS in X-H1 will perform when combined with a stabilized lens. Will it further improve the performance as Olympus OMD does ?
Those are issues that will require some hands on testing. According to Fuji, they will work together, so that a stabilized lens will see a greater improvement than a non-stabilized lens. Fuji also notes that even non-native lenses will benefit from the IBIS.
I noted the Made in Japan missing on the new camera. Can we assume now that Fujifilm is moving all its camera manufacturing to China as Panasonic did few years ago?
The X-H1 that I received did say "Made in Japan" (as I reported in my preview) ruclips.net/video/qdt7STgVyOU/видео.html. It's in a new place, behind the LCD screen. So, not safe to assume.
It's only 2.5 stops compared to the over 5 stops that non OIS lenses get. Seems to be a problem with the image circle of the OIS lenses and unfortunately there won't be a fix for it. So if you want to have 5 stops of stabilization on your kit zoom, you need the super heavy 16-55mm now.
Great review. I'm Nikon user, but want to get something for video use. Being real estate, wedding hybrid shooter. I am looking for something where I can shift to photo and video with their own settings. I've Sony a6500, but the problem with me is when ever I shift to video or photo the whole setting is transferred of whatever you are doing in video or photo. It's not in the case of Nikon. Whenever shifting to video/photo, both have their own settings. How about fuji? If it's the same as Nikon I can go for it
Thanks for the kind words. Although in general, switching from stills to video is not a task does require some adjustment - usually because the shutter speed and aperture will be different - the video settings for most settings on the X-H1 are independent of the stills settings. Why not shoot stills with Nikon, video with Fuji (or Sony)?
Thanks for the reply. The way I shoot real estate mostly is take a shot and then take video at the same time with slider. Then in the end walk through with gimbal. I tried doing photo with Nikon and video with Sony but it takes almost double the time. I wanted something which serves the purpose of photo and light enough to use on gimbal. Because dro mode on Sony a6500 is terrible
Shame they have not put a decent battery in there with the extra space. At least provided a decent capacity optional big one for the grip. There is enough space in there to fit a battery the size of the Nikon D3s on my desk and I have got over 2000 shots per charge from that battery. If the grip had an optional 'High Power' battery instead of just adding two more of the small feeble ones, they could have made this an all-day shooter.
@@MaartenHeilbron Indeed, the future is still out there! I guess the XT4 answered a lot of those prayers. Funnily enough I have just purchased an XH1 after doing a ton of research (your videos included, many thanks)
If you check fujifilm website xt2 xpro2 and xh1 have the same operating temperatures !
Thanks for the correction - I checked the manual, but I realize now I must have looked at the temperature rating for the battery charger (sorry!).
Maarten Heilbron great videos by the way it nice to listen to a calm and considered reviews. Loving fuji cameras over here in the uk😊
Thanks for the kind words, and for fact-checking, appreciated.
The hardest working man on RUclips! Thanks for the comparison Maarten, you're the best!
I appreciate the kind words, thanks!
In my opinion you have the best camera review videos on the internet. Thank you concise informative reviews and no annoying music.
I appreciate the kind words, thanks for commenting.
Can't wait for your full review. Your reviews are always the best on RUclips - professional, straight to the point... just the way all reviews should be.
That's very kind of you to say. I'm waiting patiently for Fuji to finish their launch events across the country.
That's very kind of you to say, thanks.
Your review seems to be the most comprehensive and informative that I have come across for the H1. Thanks for making this!
That's very kind of you to say, thanks for commenting.
Thank u sir. Both of yr videos r very informative n detailed, better than most other videos available at the moment.
Thats very kind of you to say, thanks!
Thanks for your thoughts, always nice to hear from my viewers.
As usual, clear, concise and no BS review. Thanks Maarten!
I appreciate the kind words, thanks for commenting.
Yup, both Billy and I are in Canada ... and I heard him say it too. I'll test in detail when the camera returns.
Thanks for your kind words, always nice to know my viewers appreciate my work.
This is a very thorough comparison. Thank you! Looking forward to your review.
Thank you, I appreciate the kind words.
Such a sweet old man. I appreciate that you reply the comments. Best comparison so far.
Who are you calling old? Otherwise, thanks for the kind words.
Im looking at the XH1 for street & fashion photography, im really liking this camera.
Whether you look at it or through it, there's lots to like.
Maarten Heilbron yeah, im thinking of getting it with the 56mm f1.2. Im loving fujis colour science and the newer bigger body with the top display. Also the 5 axis stability would be handy when i so event/fashion shoots. I feel that the H1 is a great street camera too.
All good reasons to choose the X-H1.
What did you end up doing? :)
You are certainly enthusiastic! Thanks for the kind words,
This is by far the best review and comparison of the X-H1, great job!
Thanks for your kind words, appreciated.
Extremely thorough and concise. Thank you for this. Subscribed! I look forward to more reviews.
How kind, thanks so much for taking the time to comment and for subscribing - appreciated.
I did not test that, but I will.
Maarten Heilbron thanks! Looking forward to tee full review.
I'll get it done as quickly as I can after it returns.
It is an annoyance, but sometimes the annoyance offsets the value of using AutoISO when there is a dramatic lighting transition in a scene. And while I'm annoyed, and it's clearly obvious to me - most viewers are not sensitive to these kinds of issues.
Not a video buff but isn't this where a videographer uses ND to offset highlights?
Goodness Maarten, that's a lot of camera in all senses!
If I am to buy one after your full review, I shall have to get to work on those wrist strengthening exercises... 😁
hehe, thanks for the kind words. I'm stocking up on KT tape.
Thank you for the great work you do on these videos.
Thank you, it's always nice to be recognized for the effort that's involved in these projects.
Thank you so much for the in-depth comparison/differences! Very much appreciated to say the least. 👍🏾
Always nice to hear from a viewer who appreciates my videos, thanks for commenting.
Also, thank you very very much for your high quality video, as always!
That's very kind, thanks for taking the time to comment.
Very informative video - detailed and to the point. I’m in two minds about this camera. I moved from Nikon because of the size and weight and now Fuji are creeping in that direction... but as someone who is doing more video these days those features are tempting 🤔
Thank you, I always appreciate the kind words. Tempting indeed.
Thanks for the kind words. Those are in the works, the X-H1 should be back tomorrow so I can get started.
I'm getting some mad Rick Steves vibes watching this. Take me to Europe Maarten! Nice video.
I can see that happening. Let me take you on a cruise down the Rhine: ruclips.net/video/Cr408P7l9ck/видео.html
Amazing!
Thanks!
Your videos are always the same... I mean, always well done, very informative and sooooooo useful ! Thanks again for your time. Very appreciated. Regards.
Phew - at first I thought I was boring ... thanks for your kind words, always appreciated.
Pity about LCD not being fully articulating. Thanks for a nice summary of new features and differences.
Thanks for the kind words, I think it's a pity too.
That could a left it off altogether along with the video capability. Because I never use it and I am quite sure the majority of us don’t.
You never use the LCD? Interesting.
Wow. What a beautiful Camera with so many settings it will be a job just trying to learn this Fujifilm X-H1 Camera System!
Thank you for the breakdown!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for your kind words.
Fantastic. A truly professional option for photos AND video. The ultimate hybrid!
Seems that way - but will have to see when I can shoot with it for an extended period.
Thank you! Looking forward to your next review. Sounds like an interesting camera!!!
How nice to read your kind words, thanks.
Looking forward to your review Maarten.
Thanks - I'll be working on it as soon as I get the camera back.
Great and super quick review!
What’s the weight of the camera fully loaded w the grip? And the 18-55 lens?
I’m done w canon 6d and the 24-70
Looking to make the h1 into a wedding camera.
Sorry, I didn't add all that up - but I will for the full review. In the meantime, pretty sure you'll find the details on Fuji's specifications for those things.
🧐 Maarten, please 🙏 help: what do you mean with the 5 second easter egg at 7:27? Is there a hidden possibility so set the self-timer to 5 sec's?
If you combine the self timer with burst mode it will take five images instead of just one. No opportunity to change the times.
It's an issue they're aware of, not sure if they're working to address it.
Thanks for the tip, I'd forgotten that shortcut.
One of the reasons I moved from Nikon to Fuji is because of size and portability, hope Fuji is not moving in the wrong direction...an XT2 with in-body image stabilization would be perfect
Let's hope stabilization comes to more Fuji models.
You do such an excellent job. This camera is not for me but I do admire it and admire Fuji ----- they are really moving
Thank you for your kind words, appreciated.
Hello sir, great job as always. What do shot your videos with?
I appreciate the kind words. This video (because the X-T2 is in it) is mostly shot with the Sony A6300 ... but here's a full "behind the scenes" peek at everything I use in video production: ruclips.net/video/1Rqvdn4koaM/видео.html
Thank you for the nice and useful video. I’m wondering if XT3 with all rumors items will be in your hand, which one do you prefer as the best camera for Photography? (Xt3 vs xh1)
I can't even begin to compare a camera that hasn't been announced with one that I've only seen briefly.
Thanks for your hard work and time.
always my pleasure
Very good reviews Maarten! It does not look like the X-H1 has zebras, and Auto ISO in video, does it ?
Thanks for the kind words. AutoISO yes (but haven't tested how smooth that is) Zebra, no (but there is a highlight function that flashes at some undetermined level).
That reflector at your back makes it look like your wearing a sombrero lol
??? I AM wearing a sombrero. :-) No mention of my eyebrows? No remarks about making my partner shovel? I wonder why I bother to include cameras in my videos at all. Thanks for the chuckle.
Very good review. So is it every bit as good as the xt2 in terms of a still camera.
A pleasure to read your kind words - yes every bit as good, as with IBIS, in some situations, a little better.
I wonder - it likely depends on whether the processor can support it.
What an amazing camera Maarten! Good review also. By the way, do you speak Dutch sinds you have a Dutch name? :-)
Thanks for the kind words, en ja, ik spreek inderdaad noch steeds een klein beetje nederlands.
Maarten Heilbron super tof Maarten! Groetjes vanuit NL
Bedankt, tot ziens.
Well, it is bigger. But unless you plan to shoot video or you desperately need the IBIS, I'd go with the X-T2.
Thank you for the info.
always happy to help
does it have eye detect? thanks for the review- good job as always
It does, thanks for the kind words.
thank you Maarten - exactly the information I need :-) I'll stick with my X-T2 (which I absolutely love) and wonder if some of the stills tweaks will make it to the X-T2 via a FW update.
Thanks for the kind words, appreciated.
Nice comparison. Question what results one gets from using both the Optical Image Stabilization available on some lenses AND the IBIS together?
The touch screen can be disabled easily - but as the touchpad selection area can be changed, the nose problem is easily avoided.
ruclips.net/video/63cGPWuuWKo/видео.html join video halfway to see ibis effect with Ht1 and Xt2 without (xf90mm F2.0)
Thanks for the link.
I think this is a great point. I understand the 16-55 is a great lens, but I hesitate to buy it because I take a lot of indoor images in lower light conditions. Getting a bit older, not as steady. Now with IBIS, that lens becomes much more useful. And all those Primes become stabilized also.
You're right, IBIS makes improves the value of that lens.
Is GPS built into the body, since there appears to be a geo tagging option?
Nope, it uses the GPS information from the phone.
Hi , I should have mentioned , I was referring to still shots. Will the Ibis help me that much in low light? I don't prefer using the flash.
There is some benefit to having stabilization in low light settings - but in my opinion, you'd be better off with a faster lens, which will provide a much greater increase in low light performance.
Thank you Maarten.
Always my pleasure, thanks for the kind words.
Sir, could you please tell me if the XH-1 makes any jerk, as if something moves inside the camera when you turn the camera on? Mine does so every time I turn the camera on? Is it normal?
Thanks!
You are correct, there is a distinct "clunk" when the X-H1 turns on. I thought it was the lens, but it seems to happen even when no lens is mounted.
So kind of you for the reply, I really do appreciate it!
I am enjoying my XH-1,whenever I go out to take pictures. Amazing camera with Stunning picture quality!
Again, you are correct, I'm also enjoying this camera.
Would you say that the xh-1’s shutter was significantly quieter?
Yes, I would.
Does the autoexposure in video vary smoothly ? Or is it still in steps as on the x-t2?
Will test and report in my full review.
It seems if you are primarily a stills shooter, with the possible exception of the IBIS and maybe the beefier grip, the XT2 will still be fine if not even preferred.
That's a defensible position, thanks for your thoughts.
Hi Maarten,
Greetings from the Philippines.
I will buy my first camera.
I will be doing mostly videos with slomo and a little bit of stills.
These are my choices. I hope you give your thoughs or even suggest other camera not in the list:
Sony A6300: Good slowmo, but it overheats
Canon 200D / SL2: because its beginner friendly, lenses for future upgrade... and cheap
Canon 800D / T7i: 2nd Canon choice
Olympus E-M5ii: 5-Axis IBIS
Lumix G85: 5-Axis IBIS
Fujifilm X-T20: Because its a Fuji :)
I am leaning towards the Olympus M5ii because it has everything I am looking for but the micro 4/3 sensor is making me hold back. I fear this might be terrible in low-light. I might be shooting dimly lit scenes and areas specially during music concerts.
I will also be doing product photography for my wife.
HELP PLEASE!
Thanks for the Time!
RAKK
Not exactly relevant, but I don't see any reason not to take the Olympus, particularly for video.
Thank you!
always happy to help
Thanks for adding these thoughts, appreciated .The reason I would prefer the Olympus is its amazing in body stabilization.
Thanks!
always happy to help
`Great review! Does the in body stabilisation worth the upgrade for stills? How much of a difference is it?
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. This depends on how often you're annoyed that either your ISO is too high or the shutter speed to slow. Either way, and depending on the lens and focal length, you could expect a couple of stops improvement.
Maarten Heilbron thank you so much for such a clear answer!
I'm always happy to help.
Is a detailed review of the X-H1 coming soon? I already have mine but I'm curious if you are having a similar experience to me or if I'm the only one.
It is, but waiting for my battery grip. What issue are you having?
Maarten Heilbron No problem. If I can figure out in doing something wrong and get it working it would be great. I really like it and Fuji in general.
I'll do my best.
Although I feel that the X-Tn line will continue, not sure when this might happen.
Thank you... I kind of thought so, but I am puzzled as to what will the X-T3 bring... I was anticipating it to have all the add ons that X-H1 received... but if that will be the case then what is the point of X-H1?
Let's imagine that it might not be as big, that it might be more heavily focussed (sorry) on stills.
Thanks again... probably will wait for X-T3 then as I am more interested in stills than video.
I will do my best to get a video posted as soon as I have details.
Would you say the XH-1 is bigger or smaller than an average DSLR?
Roughly similar - bigger than some entry level models. Smaller than some full frame pro models.
Will you do a XH1 and Sony A7III comparison when you have a chance to play with both? Please say yes
Yes. I have the X-H1 and am working on Sony for the A7 III - they're just now arriving, so hopefully soon.
why are you so awesome?
Thank you for your kind words - just doing what I enjoy.
thanks for your video!
I'll detail this in my full review.
looking fw to it!
thanks
Interesting thoughts - thanks for the kind words.
Are you going to be doing a detailed review of the xh1 soon ?
It is in progress - I'm now waiting for the firmware upgrade, which they've just announced is delayed after they botched the X-T2 upgrade.
How to check the shutter counts on XT2? Please!
No idea. Or sure why you need to know the shutter count?
Great info, thx. Simply amazing options for those who work out of the box. Too bad the X H1 is not a bid smaller. I'll check it out this week, as well as the Sony a6600, Fuji X-T3 and the Sony RX 100 VII as another backup. Sony can learn a lot from Fujifilm, especially in the menu system, 4K and creative options!
Thanks for your kind words. If you're looking for a smaller X-H1, try the X-T3.
Does the X-H1 have better AF-C in video than Sony A6000 and Sony A6500?
I will test that in the full review.
Another vey helpful video. Fuji is keeping its foot on the gas :)
Always nice to see your avatar pop up in my comments - thanks for the kind words. Yes, but I see equal activity at Panasonic and Sony.
Does it have focus stacking?
It does not have a focus stacking feature.
Should I upgrade to XT-2 from the XT-1 or Should upgrade to the XH-1
What is the improvement you're hoping for by upgrading? What part of the X-T1 experience is not satisfactory?
I like the dual sd card slots and the in body image stabilization. I don't like the 16mp sensor in the X-T1. Is this a big enough reason to upgrade. Photography is just a hobby I'm not a professional.
Those are good reasons - you're sure to enjoy the X-H1.
Interesting ... I've been thinking that the X-Pro is the flagship - but you may be right.
Hi Maarten, great Job! 👍 your review is very good.
Thanks for your kind words, always appreciated.
What' the maximum sync speed?
According to the manual, 1/250.
You are like a robot :-). Awesome done!
Thanks for your kind words, appreciated.
I have xpro2 with 23f2 561.2. I'm looking for another camera to shoot video. At first I thought to buy a6500 and 3 more lenses. I should wait for the X-h1.
You should wait for the X-H1
I have not seen any mention anywhere about how the IBIS in X-H1 will perform when combined with a stabilized lens. Will it further improve the performance as Olympus OMD does ?
Those are issues that will require some hands on testing. According to Fuji, they will work together, so that a stabilized lens will see a greater improvement than a non-stabilized lens. Fuji also notes that even non-native lenses will benefit from the IBIS.
Maarten Heilbron thank you again for a prompt reply
always my pleasure
X-T2 still looks the best camera... with or without booster grip
I can support that decision, but for video, I find the X-H1 very appealing.
Maarten Heilbron very true..... I just hope the X-T3 will keep a similar form of the X-T2
Richard Jones it won’t have IBIS so it probably will keep the smaller form factor. Although I really like the grip better on the XH1 to be honest
I thank you for your honesty.
Which is better for a campus journalist?
Either would be fine. If you're not doing video, you'll have everything you need in the X-T2.
Maarten Heilbron Therefore, X-H1 is better for videos and photos overall?
The X-H1 has additional features that will be helpful if you're producing videos as well as stills.
Maarten Heilbron Is X-A5 already enough for capturing landscapes, sunsets, and programs/events?
Sure, it's also a capable camera - although with fewer features.
I know the sensor is the same & xtransIII processor right...but did I hear something about better ISO?
The settings are the same as the X-T2.
Having micro USB in 2018 and not USB-C in a total non sense to me... crazy
I never liked USB-C either.
Why is the stabilization with the 18-55mm so bad? Should be the best selling zoom in the Fuji X lineup.
What makes you think it's bad?
It's only 2.5 stops compared to the over 5 stops that non OIS lenses get. Seems to be a problem with the image circle of the OIS lenses and unfortunately there won't be a fix for it. So if you want to have 5 stops of stabilization on your kit zoom, you need the super heavy 16-55mm now.
Thanks for your note - it's an issue that I'll add to my review. Where did you find these details?
Did you find that image quality from the XT2 is sharper than the XH1?
No - they use the same sensor, it shouldn't be materially different.
Only thing i want to implented (maybe update)is that you can assign a button to record video.
Right - not sure that's a custom option, but will check. Personally, I'm happy with the shutter button and find it very easy to use.
i ment that you don't have to turn the left upper knob to video..
Ah. I kind of prefer the need to turn the dial and use the shutter button.
Understood. I hope you find a camera that suits your needs.
Good suggestions. Remember that a DSLR does have a battery advantage - t doesn't have to continuously power a viewfinder or LCD screen.
I like you videos
Thanks, the kind words are appreciated.
I sold my XT2 and ready to upgrade to the XH1. Although, I may hang on to see if there is an XH2.
Who knows what the future holds?
Still waiting? ;P
@@providief Who knows what the future holds?
@@MaartenHeilbron Indeed, the future is still out there! I guess the XT4 answered a lot of those prayers. Funnily enough I have just purchased an XH1 after doing a ton of research (your videos included, many thanks)
@@providief Still very happy with my X-H1, particularly for video. Yes, there's better, but not enough to upgrade.
