After I got my X-H1 I have never ONCE had an issue with the shutter release nor have I taken a picture by mistake. I find the release much better than the two-stage in properly pressing off the shot to not introduce any extra camera shake. It’s great.

Depends on how capable the video mode on the camera is I guess. In the next Leica or Canon review Jordan will probably have much less screen time.

I'm completely new to Fuji, but sold my Sony A99II to buy the X-H1. Been using for the last 10 days, and what I found: 1.) Maybe it is bulky for a mirrorless camera, but the ergonomics are great and compared to an SLR, it's still light and actually compact, 2.) The image quality is gorgeous, 3.) the autofocus is really nice. There is a lot of tweaking, but I have been using this to shoot birds with the 100-400mm lens, and it is really good. I use the one of the presets (the 2nd one I believe), and zone AF (either the medium size 7x7 zone, or the smaller 3x3 zone) and it does the job quite nicely. (I found the wide area tracking AF is not terribly effective) There is a good article by a bird photographer up on Photography Life, about using an X-T2 with the 100-400mm zoom, and that gave me some good tips on how to customize the AF on the X-H1 to be most effective.
I wish the phase detect autofocus area was a bit wider across the sensor, though compared to my Sony A99II (using the non-Sony, Tamron 150-600 zoom), the X-H1 AF area is actually bigger (as a % of the sensor). More importantly, the whole setup is compact and light -- so I didn't need a tripod and I could get closer to my targets and get some nice shots. I still have to play some more and figure out how I want to customize the camera further, but, I'm loving it.

I've been shooting fuji for a couple years now but just used the 100-400 for the first time this weekend shooting Sandhill Cranes with the same settings as you & although I thought I missed focus on almost all my flying photo's when I got home I was shocked that almost all of them where in focus & this was with my X-T2. Also extremely impressed with the optical quality on the lens & didn't expect that from a variable aperture lens.

And we're off :) Looks great! When cooking it often says to either "add ingredients" to the recipe or to "fold in" the stuff. Folding in is always a gentle way to introduce additional ingredients gently. This video is a great cooking show lol. You "folded in" gently so almost not to notice that this is now a DPReview rather than something else. Job so well done - I'm impressed - just a nice sprinkling of DPReview so as not to distract from the topic on the plate. Guess I must be hungry with all this food lingo :) Thumbs up.

Dear lord that kid is photogenic. Those bright green globe eyes against the leaf background with some nice catch light from the water below looks incredible. This camera's picture output is super impressive. The peakcocks earlier in the video are so detailed and colourful and the colours out of camera look super nice.

I own an X-H1 for 1 month now and I think the battery topic is overrated. On a wedding I can shoot about 600 photos with one battery. It is not great, but it is also not terrible. This is with automatic switching between the LCD and the EVF. But since the switching by the eye sensor is now really fast, I will use EVF + Eye sensor (meaning that the EVF is off, if you don't look through it) in future to prolong battery life.
And I have to admit, I love the new shutter button. It feels very intuitive to shoot with it and honestly I did not need any time to get used to it. I can only assume, that most of the reviewers are lacking fine motor skills ;-P And the new mechanical shutter is so quiet, this is really sexy.
Last but not least, I find the top display very handy. It summarizes the most important camera settings in one place (e. g. AF mode, film simulation mode, ISO, WB). So forgetting about the camera settings and shooting with the wrong camera settings has become less probable ;-) And I love it, that I can see the battery status (important with the X-H1 ;-) ), the exposure compensation and remaining shots even when the camera is turned off.

Very good review! Awesome guys, I'm pretty sure that Fujifilm will update the camera to fix and improve the autofocus features, same happened to the xt2, at first release days autofocus wasn't so good, but look what they do to the camera... Is the thing with Fujifilm, they will change your camera with software a lot of times and they do it right to give you better software improvement and features... As an example the 120 fps and internal flog on the xt2, so I can trust that the x-h1 in a very short future will get some awesome features, even 4k 60fps because they can achieve that thanks to the x-h1 200Mbps recording capabilities.... And same to the laggy touch screen, they now improve the xe3 touch panel, they really know their cameras and always try to extract the best of each one.

      Great review!
I was wondering if the X-H1 was fit for my use case just yesterday, so it's perfectly on time.
However, about the review format, may I suggest saying "more details on that in the written review" throughout the video, instead of repeating "check it on dpreview.com" ?
I understand it's useful for this first installment, to differenciate it from TCSTV, but it feels a bit distracting.
Anyway, I'm really glad you are now able to directly quote and present comprehensive lab tests, I think it's a perfect complement to your field tests.

Considering the XH1 and Fuji platform myself for an hybrid system. The XH1 stands above everything else:
-Eterna. Out to the box footage looks stunning. Much better than Sony/GH5 graded, just compare here skintones. That saves HOURS in post.
-Highlight rolloff. Better than everyone else, specially under harsh sun or artificial lighting. It looks organic, film-like.
-Higher res EVF for manual focus
-LINEAR FOCUS! at least a system that makes focus-by-wire lenses useful for video manual focus
-Build. This is indeed a 1D-type of camera. And no overheating
-Fuji lenses are all high-end and really well built, all metal construction.
-JPEG SOOC. You can get away with them 90% of the time. Another time saver. And COLOR is stunning, best in the industry.
-Price. An XH1 with 5-6 lenses and an XE3/XT20/XT2 as second body costs about HALF what it would cost with other brands, For instance with an A7III
Now, the only drawbacks are to me not being FF (neither is an ALEXA) for DOF in photo mode, but that only makes sense if you pay for the EXPENSIVE Sony GMs like the 70-200, otherwise it's f4 zooms or f1.8 primes, so the FF advantage is lost. And Sony has the STUNNING eyeAF.
Still on the fence. Thx DPReview and Chris&Jordan

Damn man I am already a Fuji guy and this made me want to throw out my current older Fuji lineup and just get the XH1. I make videos and do photo work too, and I actually was going to go for the XH1 this summer. But now that the XT3 is coming out in September I want to wait to see what Fuji does with the XT3 first. I do think that it is really hard to beat the Fuji ecosystem for the price.

    • @Weird_Quests

J Enrique G C hey win thinking of buying into the Fuji XH1 - What lenses would you recommend as a lineup with this camera and the grip too? I’m thinking about selling my Sony system off, getting the xh1 with lenses for video production and a x100f for daily stills.

A very minty complete X-H1 package came into my possession today. I think I got it because I got the 90 last month. It didn't hurt getting the whole deal for 700, either. (No tax no shipping..a cafe sale!) I mean...that's just amazing. As usual, pics around the house later today...boy, the wrong SD card...the wait time... but I noticed your wrist strap. I like it. I like the narrow gauge style, but all I see on ebay like it seems to be for pocket digitals 20 or so years old. What's your's? And considering the firmware upgrades this camera has had, maybe it's time to go over your autofocus issues again.

Finally got an X-H1 - certainly pulls all my strings. Grip is great. IBIS too. Viewfinder is super fine. Not that much bigger or heavier than the X-T2 (for which this new camera to the bag is a companion). In fact, after learning the camera for the past several hours, it is plain to see that it is an X-T2 on steroids. Very glad to have it ;-)

Good review. I have had the X-H1 for over a month now and am only just getting used to it. The big negative with the camera for me is it isn't just a 'pick up and go camera', you really have to think about what you are shooting then go into the menu and set up the AF to get the best images possible. I also have the X-E1, which isn't nearly as good but is much more fun to shoot with because I know the AF doesn't work very well, so I just use manual, you don't get that with the X-H1, though manual focus does work very well.
Also I am 50/50 on the EVF, I am used to EVF's but I just can't seem to get to grips with the X-H1's for some reason, particularly in lower light situations and it some times feels juddery.
I have also had some of the issues with freezing that a lot of X-H1 owners have had, though not recently. I am looking forward to the firmware upgrade the X-H1 is going to get in May and hope it helps with the AF.
I may sound very negative about the camera but it is generally a very good camera and the images you get in normal light are excellent, particularly the picture profiles. I love the body of the camera and the grip is good, it is heavy in comparison with my X-E1 but it balances well.
For me the biggest thing is it is a good camera, in need of a faster processor and when Fuji bring out the X-H2 they are going to have a camera which can compete for video, compared to the GH5 (though by then we will have the GH6).
If I was going to give this camera a grade, it would be a B+, it is very capable but there a just little annoying things which stop the camera get an A score from me.

Just shot a ATP tennis match with my X-H1 with grip and XF 50-140. I find the XF 100-400 zoom ring is too stiff so don’t use it as much. But in 2 hours, I shot 1,066 frames and used, according to the meters, one and a half batteries. On the downside, it froze once, but that was resolved by unscrewing the grip. Yes, the shutter release can be vague at times and I probably missed a couple of shots due to this. Worst thing was that the buffer is too small. (I was shooting RAW plus JPG). It’s not quite and EOS 1 yet.

Great to see you again, this time under the DPReview banner !
Great test, pretty comprehensive, and always that little bit of wry humor to spice it up.
For the 14 mins 59sec limit for video, I've read somewhere that it was for tax reasons, like camcorders with no time limits and photo cameras that do videos under 15 mins are taxed differently to companies, and that might be the main reason why Fuji is keeping things under 15mins SOOC

The trick on the touch screen is, it's a touch screen, not a tap screen. Give a good touch, you don't notice a lag. One thing I noticed with the X-H1 is that prioritizing all my settings for fastest response with the camera, I learned a lot of stuff I didn't know on my T-2.

Nice review, Chris and Jordan. As a stills-only guy with an X-Pro2 and some stellar Fujinon XF lenses, since the XH-1 uses the same sensor as my X-Pro2, despite IBIS and newer processor tweaks, I just don't see any differences in image quality. (IBIS means nothing to me anyway, for hte majority of my shooting, I use a solid tripod.) I'm anxiously awaiting the XT-3 with the new processor AND sensor! And BTW, I realie this isn't a lens review, but IMHO, that Fujinon XF80mm f/2.8 Macro is the sharpest lens I've used in 40 years of photography! Another reason I'm awaiting the XT-3...to see what stellar detail the XT-3 and 80mm Macro can achieve! Thank you!

You never mentioned the upcoming Firmware for the X-H1 how about an update to the review when its released? Fuji always improves things a lot with their updates.

We're playing with the Beta but we don't like to review Beta features until they are proven to work well. Looks like a nice update but the AF improvements are pretty minor.

I don't know but watching your videos never ever feel like I have to move the slider to skip some useless parts. That's coz you don't waste my time discussing things nobody cares about. I get it, you want to keep a casual looking output, although it's quite obvious you put some serious effort into this weekly vids. Great job and thanks Chris ad Jordan! You both rock! :D

Just purchased a used one. I'm looking forward to taking delivery. I think for the price, and unique body style (for Fujifilm) it will have a lot to offer. I'm sure the XT-4, if not for price, would have have made more sense in 2020.
Thank you for one of the best reviews I've found! For the price I'm hoping it works well with my XPro-3. Have any firmware updates improved the camera with zooms vs. primes you mentioned?

This review sound more like the Sony alpha first Gen, hope Fuji doesn't wait 3 generation for improvements. we know Fuji does make plenty of updates for FREE instead of making us wait for 2nd and 3rd generations for updates like Nikon and canon.

The XH-1 seems to be a great camera. I always liked Fujis dials but hated the handling of the smaler bodys, as to me they always felt more like a brick than a nice gripped camera (same goes for Sonys APS-C line).
BUT at it's pricetag I have to wonder what advantages the XH-1 has over my Panasonic G81 (aside from the bigger sensor)?
At about double the price (of the G81/80/85) and with next to no obvious advantages (and the disadvantage of no fully articulated screen) I can't really find a good reason for anyone to buy it though.
    Great review though =)
    Cheers from Germany =)

Great video! Any more details on the linear manual focus by wire available? Think it's something on its way to the other X-series bodies through firmware, like the X-T20? I haven't found anyone else discussing this feature.
Fuji is definitely optimizing towards a few different approaches for which people want to change to mirrorless, it's really cool to see.

Nice video, thanks. I do have some questions if you can spare a sec...
The way I use Back-Button Focusing on my 5-series DSLR is to customise two buttons (AF-ON and *) with completely different sets of AF settings, so I can just pick the one I want (including different tracking cases). My GH5 doesn't allow for anything like the flexibility (plus it won't even do AE lock on the shutter button in CAF).
    Does the XH1:
    (1) Allow more than one button for BBF and to have different AF recipes on them?
    (2) Support an AE lock option on the shutter button for SAF and CAF?
Oh and I was surprised by the macro photos, thought the lens would do better (although video editing and RUclips are in the way, of course).
P.S. When you say the IBIS works with OIS lenses it sounded like you were suggesting Dual-IS - if so are you sure, I thought it was you just got one? Plus if I'm correct have Fuji, who do like the firmware update, suggested they will support Dual-IS (body+lens) at some point? (Conversely I wish Panasonic would let me use the GH5's IBIS with OIS lenses that don't support Dual-IS rather than being stuck with the less good OIS.)
P.P.S It may be RUclips but I didn't like the look of Chris's lips in the Eterna segment in front of the bubbles. How does it look in the original?
P.P.P.S. You talked (17:50) about shooting FLog+Eternal on an XT2 being similar to the XH1, but perhaps should have mentioned the lack of IBIS you then get?

Please review the Tamron 28/75 f2.8 e mount and the Sigma 105 f1.4. E mount. It would also be cool to see a video that shows the testing process that dpreview does. So we have an idea what they actually do. The fuji XH1 does nothing for me. Bigger than a Sony A7lll but with a smaller sensor and smaller battery. And needs the grip for a headphone jack. and at the price of a full frame camera, Fuji had me really close to buying into the fuji system. I like the fuji color. But in the end i wanted full frame and switched from a Canon 5Dlll to a Sony A7r lll. Fuji should have gone full frame instead of putting out there medium format camera.

Great camera but they tried too hard to neuter the camera to sell you the expensive battery grip which takes a lot away from the compactness and portability of this camera....which was one of the best features of the xt2. Other than that, I'm loving that we see Chris and Jordan put out their best content more regularly.

Why isn't Linear focus-by-wire available on Every camara?? I was just thinking the other day that it should be super easy to implement. The Sony 90mm macro is the only one of their that will do it, and thusly it's the only one that isn't painful to do video AF with.

    • @thatjordandrake
      @thatjordandrake 6 лет назад +1

I was thrilled to see the option for linear focus! Hopefully it finds its way onto every mirrorless system shortly.

Here's a tech note, triggered by the comment about using back-button focus being immediately followed by a discussion of AF-C. Using back-button focus with AF-C on the Fuji is flirting with... well, not danger, but misfocus. It doesn't buy you anything if you always keep the button held down until after you've released the shutter. But if you release the button before you snap the picture, the focusing cycle instantly stops without completing. With phase-detect AF that's probably not an issue, but if the camera has decided to use contrast-detect AF, the lens will be left focused at some random distance within the "hunting" range.
Furthermore, if you do release the AF-On button before firing the shutter, Release Priority will not save you from taking badly-focused images. Release Priority is -- understandably -- connected to AF, and releasing the button disengages autofocus. (By the way, the AF+MF option does that, too.)
