This scene is so sad, especially when Claire saying the amount of time needed to forget Jaime doesn’t exist. For Frank, Claire is his Jaime. That’s why he took her back after she disappeared and never gave up hope she’d return. While I love Claire and Jaime together, Frank’s life (at least in the show) was wasted loving a woman who loved someone else while also raising that man’s child who served as a constant reminder of him.

What a devastating scene to watch. I have no doubt that Claire truly loved Frank, but thrust into circumstances no one could’ve imagined or predicted, they were stuck in a toxic orbit around Brianna with this cavernous despair quietly consuming them. Frank was such a good man, but always felt betrayed that Claire couldn’t extinguish her love for Jamie. My heart breaks for them both.

In the video you can see Frank's voice catch when he says "I want to spend the rest of my life with a woman who loves me." In the books, Frank was diagnosed with a terminal illness and knew that he was going to die within the next few years (the car accident was unexpected and sped things up). Frank intended to take Bree to England to lead her to finding out the truth about her real father. Frank knew that Bree would one day go to the past and spent most of her childhood preparing her for the past: teaching her how to shoot a gun, hunt animals, etc. It was a terrible situation Claire and Frank were put in, but they made the most out of it for Bree's sake. Part of the reason why Frank stays with Claire for so long is because he didn't want her to make the impossible decision to choose between Jamie and Brianna. If they divorced, Frank was afraid that Claire would leave Brianna and Frank to go back to Jamie. Frank didn't want to take the chance and so stayed with her until Brianna was old enough (18 years old). He knew Claire would return to Jamie one day and he gave Claire the freedom to more easily choose. I loved Frank's character and the complexities of this relationship!

Though I’m completely on Claire’s side of the argument here, when Frank asks that question I do feel sorry for him, because it becomes clear that when he took her back twenty years ago, he thought Claire could call back in love with him after a while. All he ever had to do was ask her, and she would have made it clear that it wasn’t possible, but to see his heart break again that final time is gut wrenching.

I love Claire, Jamie and Claire forever. And while I understand, the anger in the scene she has been incredibly unfair to Frank. Has been a good father to a child who was not his, provided for and still loved his wife while Claire has existed in this time with 1 foot in the door having to settle. Where as frank stuck out being in a marriage that he was not the first choice (ironically) until Brianna was grown. Claire really doesn’t have a leg to stand on here. Especially when she brought up adultery… and then instantly said you can’t prove it,...despite the fact that you could just look at Brianna....
But I do love outlander for the fact that they treat their characters as people full and complexed rather than just characters. Especially love how Frank was an alpha male in his own right and a good man instead of reduced to a cliche. Brilliantly acted by both parties

In the book "Voyager": Chapter 19; "To Lay A Ghost" Frank also accuses Clair of having an affair with Joe Abernathy and told her that everyone thinks so because she and Joe spent so much time together. Almost a full page is devoted to his racial prejudice ranting about why Clair always invites the Abernathys to their social functions and parties referring to "those sorts of people" at which point Claire asks "Black people, I suppose you mean?" Then he thinks Claire is "dragging" Brianna into dangerous situations by associating with black people. Then Frank tells Claire that al least with him Briannna won't end up "f____g" a black man! Frank sees Brianna being friends with Joe's son (which they are just friends) but this bothers Frank.
Yep, Frank was laying that prejudice on thick in the books.

He could make things simpler. First divorce, then introduce Sandy and then invite Brianna to live with them in England. Randall was certainly part of the reason. I genuinely believe that Frank and Claire could have talked it all out, and worked things out. Claire would have realised that she didn't need to fear Frank at all, because he takes after Alex (his real ancestor), not Black Jack. And Frank would maybe have realised that Jamie was just doing what anyone in love would have done, and that he gave Frank and Claire a child. Frank was good man... He met his death inhappily. But he could not love Claire that much the way James does. Well Frank had Claire with him for some years before she went to the stones and had her still for another 20 yeara after she returned; infact claire was with Frank for most of her blossom days of her life but she didnot felt that strong bond of love with him which she found in James. Frank once claimed he loved her unconditionally but went furious when he learned the child was not his despite knowing himself he cannot become a father because of his medical problems. Eventually he love Brianna like his own daughter but he forced Claire to leave her past (James) behind and warned her to never speak of it or of Jamie ever again. Frank fid learned that Claire may returned to Jamie but he ignored it and ignored Claire and her way. In a way, Frank did loved Claire but he could not give his life to Claire, he did not acccep Claire of who she has becaome after the stones' story, a part of him and his heart filled with obsession and envious... If he could have really loved Claire more than anything he could have had a happy marriage life, He would not have commited adultry and he would have never gone into an intention of getting divorce on Claire. And we cannot blamed Claire for loving Jamie so much. She too had left Jamie and accepted her fate to save their daughter as a vow given to him. She tried and fell back into Frank who never allowed her to talked about Jamie again. May be that one of the reasons she could not feel the freedom to liberate the pains the already carried..
James had Claire for only three years before Culloden War. He risked his life from very beginning just to make sure she was safe and hid his feelings about her. He accepted Claire in everyway she was and she is. He would die for her many times and let her live. He listenned to Claire when she talked of anything without ignorance, about Frank, about herself. He allready forgiven Claire before she would apologize. He had nevr had a good life ever since Claire disappeared. But He love her still in his heart and he would sacrifice for her again if he have to. And most he still love her so strong when she came back after 20 years. James' love for Claire is powerful and so strong that even Claire herself cannot describe. Thus, they deserved each other. They went through so much pains and hardtimes during wars and battles and the challenges that stood infront of them. But they fought hard and they always fought together and they will fight still. It's time to let them love and live happily...

See this is where I lose sympathy for Frank he lived as he wanted to for 20 years Claire OFFERED him an out and he said no and then when Bree is nearly grown and he still tries to "Take her away" and I think what stings the most for him is there was always a part of him that was waiting and Hoping that HIS Claire would forget about Jamie and come back
there's a line Jamie says at the end of the 4th book
"I'm a jealous man but not a vengeful one, I'd take you from him my Sassenach. But I'd not take him from you."
That's what makes Jamie a better man. Frank Tried so hard for so long with the wish that never saying his name would take Jamie from Claire
    Wow that was an essay

This scene is very heartbreaking for both characters, both of them destroyed and long for a love that was lost in the past...Frank for so many years hoping that Claire will eventually heal and come back like it was during 1945 when she was still in love with him, while Claire was unable to forget and continue to love Jamie through the memories that affected her present life, both of them were unable to move on and can't grasp the present. The acting in this scene is very moving,Tobias and Cait really nailed this scene.

I don’t feel sorry for frank at all. He is the one that made the choice to ask Claire to come back to him. I think had he divorced her she would have raised Brianna in Scotland and would have raised her to know her father she would have probably found out sooner that Jamie was alive and both her and Bree would have went back together and Jamie would have had a chance to raise his own kid but it was Franks selfish desire to have a child that prevented that. He denied her the right to tell Bree the truth about Jamie so of course she had to bottle up her love and feelings for him. He wasn’t blind he knew she didn’t love him and he could have left her for any one of the women that he cheated with but he waited till Bree was almost an adult so that he could try to take her from Claire. He knew he wouldn’t stand a chance of taking her when she was younger as he wasn’t her dad but thought if he waited he could have it all. He talks about finally wanting a life with a wife that loved him and yet he knew Jamie was alive and that Claire loved him and he never gave her that chance did he. I find him pathetic and manipulative and I didn’t like him after he did that. Plus how could she ever look at him the same way again when Jack was what she would see. I wonder if she ever told him the truth about his oh so perfect ancestor

Totally agree with you here, I feel the same, that Frank was selfish and actually held her back, he knew everything else and never told her what he found in his research... It was really hard for Claire to know that Jamie was dead and she had to continue living for Brianna's sake... If they divorced this last time, Frank would marry Sandy and Claire would find out about Jamie (or even sooner, if she was able), but instead Frank died and it was too much stress on Brianna, who was only in the 2nd year of university... It was a little bit better for Jamie, to know that Claire and the child are alive, but what drove him absolutely crazy was his jealousy, thinking about her with Frank "day and night", to the point of total incoherence, he was like a walking dead for 18 years, and then married that harpy, who wouldn't touch him... Awful...

She did try, she did ask for a divorce when Brianna was younger and Frank refused because he was afraid that the courts would grant custody to Claire since mothers were more favoured and then he would be prevented from seeing Brianna. Then when he does suggest a divorce he threatens to take away her daughter? By having her move with him to London? That's low. It seems to me that she really tried and Frank was the one who never let her forget it. She didn't want to leave Brianna or have Brianna feel like she was abandoning her which is why she initially gave up the search for Jamie. It was Rodger who brought the search back to her and even then she told him that she wasn't going to continue.

    SPOILER ALERT:
I have only read to book three, but this fight in the book is better in my opinion and Frank is NO saint. Brianna is 18, but has not graduated yet and is telling Clair that he is stealing her to England to finish her senior year and it’s also because of his racism (yes it is only 1966, but I thought Britain was supposed to be better with their racism(better not perfect)). He does not want Bri to date the black boys that are family or friends with Clair’s doctor friend and says “everybody thinks you are having an affair with that doctor friend of yours.” Clair does file back about him having many affairs and Frank is shocked to hear this he then says, “you could have given a dang (actually swear, though).” Clair replies back, “I always said I would have given you up if I asked for it.” After Frank dies we also learn that he knew early on (I believe) that Jamie survived Culloden. He also continued to worship Black Jake Randall even after Clair told him everything. There relationship in the book was different too though. They switched the getting on each other nerves part. When Clair first comes to the hospital Randell shouts, “my wife comes back three years later and pregnant and I cannot confront her about it?!” In Boston they go about their normal lives. I believe they have one bed not two and he has several women not just one.

I wouldn’t care what happened to her I would kicked her to the side and some people saying that Jamie would have killed for her, and I couldn’t say the same for frank wasn’t he looking for her for years and paid her bills 💵 and took care of her and her daughter that wasn’t even his. This character is tripping ☺️

I love how the writers KEEP INPERSISTANT TO FAVOR FRANK, treating Claire just like a cheater/traitor and a bitch and that's it, it's very funny considering this IS CLAIRE'S STORY, NOT FRANK'S !!! ; I get it that the writers love Tobias Menzies (i love him too) but they really, really tried to ruined the MAIN character in favor of a character who only appeared for THREE seasons ?? ; Ok .............. !!! .

My sympathies lie mainly with Frank. In the Starz series, he's a good man who stays with Claire for Brianna's sake, even though she's not his biological daughter. Frank also shares very little of Black Jack's ruthlessness - even when he was mad at Claire in episode 1 of Season 2, he couldn't bring himself to hit her.
In an ideal world, Frank and Claire would have given it another go. Frank could have helped Claire make peace with losing Jamie, even though she would never have forgotten him entirely. Frank and Claire would have worked together to build a caring and content marriage, one based on trust rather than violence and bitterness. And would they have ever told Brianna the truth about her real father? That's something they could have revisited and redecided too.

You know I first started out liking Frank before Claire went through the stones and I did feel bad for him after she disappeared but he slowly starting turning into Black Jack and this seen truly made me dislike him. Breanna wasn't his to try to take from Claire no matter how much he loved her because she was still Jamie's. I know it must have been hard for Frank to try to love a woman that no longer loved him in the hopes she would forget about Jamie. You can't blame Claire for what happened nor Frank but he should have asked for a divorce instead of cheating on her and then trying to take Breanna away after she turned 18. It wasn't Claire's fault what happened to her and she never intended to fall in love but it happened and yes every time Claire would look at Breanna she would be instantly reminded of Jamie. I am sure it was just as hard for Claire to look at the man that she once loved and was constantly reminded of Black Jack, again not her fault.

    • @xaviervega468
      @xaviervega468 Год назад +1

Brianna is Frank's daughter in every way that counts. Not Jamie's fault he couldn't raise her, but the hard truth is Jamie was little more than a sperm donor at this point. Frank was the one that put the work in, that's what being a father means. Also Frank is correct when he say "I don't think I'll have to" He did the heavy lifting in raising Brianna, so he knows bloody well Brianna will likely choose to go with him., he's not forcing her to do anything. Claire knows it as well, that's why she's so pissed.
As far as divorce, family courts are stll very unfair to men now, they were EVEN WORSE back then, men stood very little chance of even getting joint custody. Yes Claire more than likely wouldn't have kept Bree from Frank, but Frank is also correct that Claire hasn't been vey good about keeping her other promises to Frank.. Why would he trust her on that.

    • @xaviervega468

One thing Claire is at fault for is she made promises she couldn't keep. She should have told Frank from the beginning that her heart would always belong to Jaime.

Chandra Robinson It’s not that simple. They both had done their share of wrongdoing. However, in this telling I’d say that she had done the lions share of mistakes. I don’t know too many men in real life who would stay with a woman who was carrying another man’s child regardless of the circumstances. In some societies, she’d be publicly shamed or even killed if her extramarital affair was made publicly known. The fact that he stayed with Claire knowing Brianna wasn’t his child and didn’t just drop her like a bad habit says a lot. He also waited until she was grown before wanting to divorce her mother. He wasn’t perfect but he wasn’t a total asshole either. Nothing was black and white which make this a good story.
