Somebody has probably already explained it, but the majority of System of a Down's songs are related to the struggles of Armenia, as all of the band members are Armenian. They also have songs denouncing the U.S. government and the wars that have been waged by them, I think you would truly appreciate their lyrics, their message and the rest of their music.
The song is about how we are regarded differently depending on how we pass. Everyone deserves to die. Like, if I were now to die from drug abuse, they might say I deserved it because I abused dangerous drugs. Hence the line, 'I cry when angels deserve to die'. The lyric passages 'Father, into your hands I commend my spirit' and 'why have you forsaken me?' are a reference to Jesus' death on the cross, as, according to the Gospels, it was one of the seven things Jesus said while dying."
PRAISE THE SHRINKING SUN! It used to be called "Suicide" but the label made them change it. Chop Suey is a play on words (Chop Sueycide) there is probably more meaning to it, but that's where the name came from.
The reason it’s called Chop Suey was to make the title more radio friendly, they changed it from “Self-Righteous Suicide” to “Self-right-chop suey-cide” and then shortened it to just Chop Suey. The title is really supposed to be what they mention in the chorus: self righteous suicide. I’ve heard people tie the meaning of this song to religion saying that it’s about Jesus dying on the cross hence “father why have you forsaken me”(God) I’ve also heard it been tied to how we act towards people who engage in self-destructive behaviors. Hence Serj encouraging the listener to “Wake up!” and act more compassionately towards them. SOAD has never really openly given out meanings to any of there songs so I would suggest listening again on your own with the lyrics in front of you and make that interpretation for yourself. Thanks for another great reaction and you were right it is a busy music video and don’t worry about doing “classics” that’s what makes them good. Id suggest Rooster by Alice In Chains next.
The song was going to be called “suicide” as the lyrics mention “self righteous suicide”... but their label made them change it. So they played with the sound of the words and came up with “chop suey” out of righteous suicide = rightCHOP SUEYcide”
Oh look at Serj's face, he looks like a naughty kid who just found the cookie jar, for suuuure they had fun making that song/video/record. It was fun watching that video again and it was fun watching you having fun watching them. Love the forever song explanation, spot on: it's been almost 20yrs since I first heard this song and just now noticed the freaking piano! :)
I grew up in the projects...Jersey City, NJ. I couldn't get caught listening to anything except rap or I caught shit for it, but as soon as I was in my apartment with my walkman I had my System of A Down bumping lol.... these dudes really make good music
~people are requesting the same tunes because they are the most popular songs . . . simple as that !! chop suey is a classic !! nothing wrong with checking out the classics !! have you heard 'freebird' by 'lynard skynard'? it a CLASSIC with an epic guitar solo at the end !!
jedi fu Dyers Eve, Hangar 18, Far beyond driven, Run to the Hill, Desperate Cry, Cemetary gates are less popular than Enter sandman, symphony of destruction,Walk, the trooper...so are they better
->LaSucube666 ~maybe, but . . . music is a tricky thing to qualify - one persons best is another persons least widely liked = popular best = your own personal favourite i prefer hanger 18 to symphony of destruction even though i think symphony of destruction is great - hanger 18 is 'better' for me . . . if i could only listen to walk or cemetary gates i would choose cemetary gates - i think walk is great but i love cemetary gates . . .
one of the members of system of a down and rza of wutang are in a group called ACHOZEN.. system of a down are dope ass musicians through and through..you have to know their background to know what the lyrics really mean. Armenian genocide.
Something that might peak your interest; idk if someone in the comments has mentioned it yet - but the bassist for System (his name is Shavo) has done production work with RZA.
Found you on my home page...i admire you for opening yourself up to other music, the music you are reviewing is my favorite. But seeing you, makes me want to expand my mind too. Thanks a lot, I totally enjoy you!
You are more than welcome and yes get to exploring new things whatever it is music food places just enjoy and smile. Anyways i ramble thanks for your time Peace!
Do You mean system of a down is not popular? Anyaway popularity has nothing to do with being good. Some famous rockers and classic bands are really famous because radios and other media have accustomed people to their music but their music is superficial and lacks musical values.
Damn!... I remember this dude n his reaction vids. He was definitely 1of a kind, the way he would hold conversations w himself.. Asking n answering some pretty damn good questions n kinda holding forums in a peculiar n hilarious way at the same time. This n more was what set this channel apart f the rest. RiP- RRT u're surely missed bro-
These guys are really nice in person. I met them when their first album just dropped and they were still a smallish band. Dudes put down their gear and took photos with my friend and I. They were really happy that two kids from NYC (they are from California) would wait for them.
I think it’s about the crucifixion. They paraphrase Matthew 27:46 with the line Father why have forsaken me and the phrase self righteous suicide seems to match up. I don’t know could be wrong.
I just stumbled on your video. Beofre watching I immediately thought that a hiphop head should really like this song. I had never thought about it before, but yeah there's a hiphop vibe in the way he's singing the verses.
Don't worry if you are reacting to songs that are on other reaction channels. It's your personal reaction that we are here to watch, regardless of the songs, or how many times we've listened to them. You will receive multiple requests to the same songs as many of them are considered 1970s rock "anthems"; Back Sabbath's "War Pigs", Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water", Alice Cooper's "Schools Out", Aerosmith's "Walk This Way", Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven", etc.
i love threes company and i just found an old show i use to love called "Voyagers" idk if you remember that show but love to reminisce on good days. Thanks for subscribing hope you enjoyed some of my silliness.
definitely i like how your just you keep it up.ill send you some rabbit hole shit lol.there is something newer and different Alice Merton No Roots she was on jimmy fallon last week or so really catchy ..that sounds stupid but only way to describe it rock on man and take care.
Bro as a metal head I like hearing what rappers have to say about my genre thnx for the reactions. If you haven't reacted to them maybe do living colour cult of personality or whitesnake heat of the night. Stuff from when I was a youngun lol
The song as I interpret it ,Is about a troubled soul that who is seriously considering (if not done made up their mind) of committing suicide.and what others will think of them when they do,And if they will be forgiven for the sin, when through their eyes it seems to be just putting ones self out of misery..But in the End I think this song is actually left up to individual interpretation... Like to see a reaction to "Megadeth's" (In My Darkest Hour), or (My Last Words) or for a badass song that has no lyrics at all check out (Into The Lungs of Hell)
No problem! Metal/rock fans tend to be very elitist at times, and def have their own kind of clique. You won't please everybody dude, so just be you bro! Cheers!
i think 'fun' is a good word to describe SOADs music although they often have very serious topics, every song has a little something to it that makes for a really fun listen. i love them for that
This is from the singer Serg, about what this song is about "The song is about how we are regarded differently depending on how we pass. Everyone deserves to die. Like, if I were now to die from drug abuse, they might say I deserved it because I abused dangerous drugs. Hence the line, "I cry when angels deserve to die."
TWELVE FOOT NINJA Point Of You They like to blend different genres from salsa beats to reggea bass lines to funk. "Point Of You" is a good intro song to that band.
I was the music manager of a hastings as a day job, wich I was a musician, and owned a production company when I had a long conversation with them on their first national tour bus, picking up promo material, and meeting with other bands on the same tour, backstage, and in the alley. Slipknot, was another band I talked to, being their first tour too.
You have a good ear in detecting some hip hop elements. System of a down is often considered new metal. New metal oftens have hip hops influences. An even better example of new metals hip hop influences would be limp bizcit. Also another system of a down song that would make a good video is BYOB. It also bends 2 genres of music, but this time has easier to understand lyrics.
Chop suey got the name because they originally wanted to name it suicide but their record label didn’t want that word suicide in the album because they thought it would affect mainstream so they chopped suicide in half and got chop suey
fun fact: the original title for the song was suicide the record label made them change it to a more radio friendly title so chop suey was chosen, a play on suey cide .
Loving the channel bro. I agree with your opening statement about everyone reaction to the same songs, I've noticed it too... My recommendation is Strapping Young Lad - Love? It's been reacted to by some people, but it's a great track and a great video. It might be a little heavy, but it has plenty of melody too...
It's Nu-Metal, a combination of Metal with Hip-Hop/Rap influences. Great genre even tho it's hated for no reasons by alot of "Metal elitist"... but fuck them, right? Also don't focus too much on the lyrics, they are REALLY weird and doesn't make alot of sense for most part. :)
You're welcome! Always cool to see genuine reaction and people discovering a whole "New world". :D The band Limp Bizkit is a great band if you wanna dig more into that genre! :)
In Hip-Hop/Rap a lot or a majority of what you’re appreciating is the words they’re spitting, how they’re putting together their rhymes. In metal the music, other than the lyrics, is a significant portion of what you should focus on. Don’t worry too much about the lyrics. Focus on the ride the instruments take you on.
The people in the crowd are actually fans. So yeah they're having probably having fun. They just told a bunch of fans when and where to be and put them in the video.
Let's just jump straight in the deep end and react to *Archspire - Involuntary Doppelganger* . Very heavy, fast, unique music, with one of the fastest lyricists you'll ever hear. You will need the lyric video...I've seen them live and the 'singer' performs just as fast live. Lyric Video - ruclips.net/video/1lsnTQyGI78/видео.html Not sure if you will like it, but I definitely would like to see your reaction!
Song was supposed to be called suicide. Record company said no. So they chopped the song title in half. "Chop" "Suey" On the album the beginning of the track Serj says "Rolling Suicide"
The original title was suicide but they changed it to make it more radio-friendly. The song title is a wordplay on Self-righteous suicide... "Self-right-Chop Suey-cide". It's about someone who is suicidal. The lyrics "Father into your hands i commend my spirit.... why have you forsaken me" was taken from the Bible. Jesus said these words on the cross because the spirit of God had to abandon him at the time of his death so that he could bear mankind's sins. I think that the suicidal speaker in the song is feeling that same abandonment.
I can't speak for all the different songs requested, but just talking about the metal songs people are requesting, I see it as people are introducing you to the greats of metal first so you have a better understanding of where it's coming from and to show the talent that really doesn't get any mainstream recognition. So yes, even though you're reacting to some of the same songs others are reacting to, you should be because they're some of the classics, the songs that really helped to shape what metal music is today. A couple of older classics to check out, Iron Maiden - Hallowed Be Thy Name, and Judas Priest - Painkiller.
the song was originally called "suicide" , but radio stations wouldn't accept to play it with that title so they "chopped suicide in half" and it became chop Suey. As for the meaning of the song, it is not really clear, people believe its about domestic abuse or drugs or suicide, but no one really knows.
The song has layers,..and, the layers are put together in a short three and a half minute song. Not truly traditional pop format but close. It's a deep tune lyrically with gaps so that the listener make up his or her own mind.
Hey man I have some local shit from my hometown, it's not me, but it's still good production quality and shit. Rap from Norfolk, VA. "Young Money Yawn" is his name. Dude might be in prison by now I don't know lol last shit he came out with was like 4 years ago. If you're gonna do a specific song, I'd recommend "Gutta Gutta". Shit goes hard. Also I subbed, I enjoy your commentary. Keep em comin
I have read most of the comments here and I can't believe how no one understood what the song is about. The song is about how society is judgemental of people with severe depression to the point of being suicidal. The first verse describes how a person with depression gets up, tries to put up a front to join society ("wake up, grab a brush and put on make up, hide the scars to fade away the shake up"), but at the last minute makes an excuse not to ("why did you leave the keys on the table? here you go create another fable"). The second verse add the blame part, either from himself or society ("you wanted to"). The next part is how society responds to them by being judgmental, condescending and apathetic ("I don't think you trust in my self-righteous suicide") and how they don't deserve sympathy for their deaths ("I cry when ANGELS deserve to die") the last part is about how that person feels abandoned and is pleading for validation on his own problems and feelings.
Radio/Video is another great song by them that jumps between drastically different musical styles, SOAD does that quite a bit though, they change the rhythm and sound of their songs a lot. Love it
Unless people tell you "lyrics are awesome!" I don't think It's that important to understand what they are singing about on your first listen. Maybe you can watch the video and then read the lyrics after. Just fast forward while you read or cut it until you have something to say, I don't know hahaha That being said, I think metal is more about the feel rather than the lyrics. Of course, lyrics can be good, but there is so much to listen (the instrumental, the flow and melody in the vocals, production and sound textures, etc.) that It's hard to catch the lyrics. Of course, the more you listen to metal, the easier it will be. But I spend my teenage years listening to metal not knowing what they were singing about (english is my second language) and I still had fun.
Yo, I was in that crowd! Song is about suicide and the band wanted to call it "suicide". Record label didn't like it so, the band chopped it... they chopped suicide... chop suey.
Music is Music you cant get hung up on individual parts like lyrical content. The overall sound and emotion that the music puts in your soul is important. Stop worrying about what its about and just listen.
The song was originaly going to be called "Suicide" but there was some kind of issue with that, soy they changed it to "Chop Suey" just because of that scene in the video
Another great video my brother... just to let you know System of a Down is a Armenian band. Definitely one of my favorite bands. I would love to see what you think of the band primus. The lead singer is definitely one of the best bassist in the world.
System of a Down - Hypnotize is my favorite. I have too many favorites from this band - Toxicity entire album, most of the Hypnotize & Mesmerize albums.
That’s one of the best parts of metal. When there going in crazy like that. It’s almost like today’s mumble rap. It’s not about what what there saying always. But the feel of the song !
Singing Doors lyrics when you open up the video, love it, and as to your comment about Bob Dylan being part of We Are The World on the last video you were absolutely correct about that, got an idea for you, when you feel like hitting up some old shit you cold select one of the 37 artists that were part of that shit back in the day to do a reaction video on, some great artists were part of that
Cop Suey - they wanted to call the song suicide but their record label didn't allow it so they chopped it in half: Chop Suey
Patrick Sullivan Why not name it Sewer Side?
Rice Krispy good one!
self righteous Table-side
@@brinculges7165 Chop Suey ( CS ) is Christ Suicide. They took a lot of heat over this.
"They all look like chefs" low key funniest thing ive ever heard about SOAD ever
But he ain't wrong tho.
"pepperoni and green peppers mushrooms olives chives"

In the original version of the song, you can hear Serj say "We're rolling 'Suicide' " right before the guitar intro begins.
WhySoSerious? Well put
Ashley Rosales take a look at Wikipedia 😉🤣
thanks for googling and pasting this shit LOL. close but no.
The reason it’s called Chop Suey was to make the title more radio friendly, they changed it from “Self-Righteous Suicide” to “Self-right-chop suey-cide” and then shortened it to just Chop Suey. thanks for the lesson. appreciated
Song was supposed to come out around 9/11 so the changed it to Chop Suey out of respect.
Wasn't the lyrics about domestic violence. ?
System Of A Down - Prison Song
System of a Down is actually one of TEch N9ne's favorite metal groups. and Tech and the lead singer do a collaboration called "Straight out the Gate"
And they did a cover of Wu tangs shame on a nigga
The song was going to be called “suicide” as the lyrics mention “self righteous suicide”... but their label made them change it. So they played with the sound of the words and came up with “chop suey” out of righteous suicide = rightCHOP SUEYcide”
Oh look at Serj's face, he looks like a naughty kid who just found the cookie jar, for suuuure they had fun making that song/video/record. You were so on point. Back when this song came out I was like he's not singing he's straight flowing. Glad you caught that too.
I really love and appriciate how you have a little question about the band. You actually looked up info about the band. That's so awesome.
He mentioned Poprocks, I am subbing
You FEEL it, it's a prime example of how System puts you in their mood without even getting the metaphor.

Besides, you won't get views if you go underground
Do You mean system of a down is not popular? Anyaway popularity has nothing to do with being good. Some famous rockers and

The song as I interpret it ,Is about a troubled soul that who is seriously considering (if not done made up their mind) of committing suicide.and what others will think of them when they do,And if they will be forgiven for the sin, when through their eyes it seems to be just putting ones self out of misery..But in the End I think this song is actually left up to individual interpretation...

i think 'fun' is a good word to describe SOADs music although they often have very serious topics, every song has a little something to it that makes for a really fun listen. i love them for that
This is from the singer Serg, about what this song is about "The song is about how we are regarded differently depending on how we pass. Everyone deserves to die. Like, if I were now to die from drug abuse, they might say I deserved it because I abused dangerous drugs. Hence the line, "I cry when angels deserve to die."
TWELVE FOOT NINJA
Point Of You
They like to blend different genres from salsa beats to reggea bass lines to funk.
Talk about forever songs! I just now heard the piano at the end for the first time!!
Sometimes it doesn't matter about the lyrics, sometimes it's about how the beat, rhythm and music, takes you.
You have a good ear in detecting some hip hop elements. System of a down is often considered new metal. New metal oftens have hip hops influences. An even better example of new metals hip hop influences would be limp bizcit. Also another system of a down song that would make a good video is BYOB. Nu Metal. some say it started with Anthrax and Public Enemy doing Bring the Noise. So let me suggest that
Ronald! There's a difference between nu metal and rap metal, actually.
Love System! Going to see them live in Vegas Oct 19, 2018. Ya know the lead singer Serj has collaborated with Tech n9ne.
You might check out some Strapping Young Lad - Love?, Oh My Fucking God (studio version) or Devin Townsend Project - Kingdom. For starters.
tech n9ne did a song with the lead singer of this band, serj tankian, called straight out of the gate.
Chop Suey = Suicide
They were not allowed by their record company to call the song Suicide, so they went with Chop Suey...
Greetings from the uk 🇬🇧
Listen to "Aerials" or "toxicity" from System of a Down. Serj has some awesome solo stuff too.

It's Nu-Metal, a combination of Metal with Hip-Hop/Rap influences. Great genre even tho it's hated for no reasons by alot of "Metal elitist"... but fuck them, right?

You're welcome! Always cool to see genuine reaction and people discovering a whole "New world". :D
The band Limp Bizkit is a great band if you wanna dig more into that genre! :)
This isn’t nu Metal. Just like slipknot isn’t. Nu Metal is stuff like korn mudvayne or coal chamber etc
Du Riechst So Gut THIS IS Nu-Metal. Slipknot's first album IS Nu-Metal just like the 3 bands you named.
Yagami Raïto yo they basically mashed nu metal with Metallica and Armenian polka music
New sub here. Love what you are doing. Have couple suggestions for reactions. Live- Lightning Crashes. Marilyn Manson- The Nobodies.
Much love man greeting from the uk 🇬🇧
UK what up!!!!!!!!! Thats right rep your COUNTRY!!!!!!! PEACE!!!!!!!
UK WHATS GOOOD ?!!!!!!! how y'all feeling out there?!!!!!! lol PEACE!!!
The people in the crowd are actually fans. So yeah they're having probably having fun. They just told a bunch of fans when and where to be and put them in the video.
Hip Hop and Metal have influenced each other in small ways for quite a while. It's cool to see, and System of a Down is no exception.
Let's just jump straight in the deep end and react to *Archspire - Involuntary Doppelganger* . Very heavy, fast, unique music, with one of the fastest lyricists you'll ever hear. You will need the lyric video...I've seen them live and the 'singer' performs just as fast live.

Not sure if you will like it, but I definitely would like to see your reaction!
Love this song
the song's name "CHOP SUEY" is a play on words as the lyrics go "self-rychose suicide" and the "CHOP SUEY" part is "self rychop-sueycide"
I agree ! This song is fun asf!
Bored by deftones is my forever song. Its a fairly simple song but i fuckin love the hip hop influence
i dont saw any Machine Head Reaction :O That would be nice!! Good Videos, keep up the good Work :)
Just fast forward while you read or cut it until you have something to say, I don't know hahaha
That being said, I think metal is more about the feel rather than the lyrics. Of course, lyrics can be good, but there is so much to listen (the instrumental, the flow and melody in the vocals, production and sound textures, etc.) that It's hard to catch the lyrics. Of course, the more you listen to metal, the easier it will be. But I spend my teenage years listening to metal not knowing what they were singing about (english is my second language) and I still had fun.
this.

Yo, I was in that crowd! Song is about suicide and the band wanted to call it "suicide". Record label didn't like it so, the band chopped it... they chopped suicide... chop suey.
It was originally called Suicide but I guess the record company made them change the name so Chop Suey is a word play on Suicide (Chop Sueycide). ;)
As a bass player some songs are definitely fun to play. So yes fun is a fine description
The golden era of music. Look these days bands and music ridiculous just ridiculous. What happend the world? What happend to us?
Definitely a multi-layered song that has staying power.
Music is Music you cant get hung up on individual parts like lyrical content. The overall sound and emotion that the music puts in your soul is important. Stop worrying about what its about and just listen.
I Believe That This Song Was Originally Named Suicide But When 9/11 Happened They Changed The Name To Chop Suey
thanks for the lesson.
HACKERMAN
Indeed it was originally "Suicide"
The song was originaly going to be called "Suicide" but there was some kind of issue with that, soy they changed it to "Chop Suey" just because of that scene in the video
Sometimes you just gotta have fun with it
Another great video my brother... just to let you know System of a Down is a Armenian band.
Dope song & chill reaction lol
I really enjoy your reactions, is great to hear the opinion of someone is new in the genre, please react to Vultures Fly by Avatar
